Cabaret Lunatique celebrates the Castro this Saturday, June 4

Cabaret Lunatique will present the next in their series of shows highlighting San Francisco neighborhoods, "Celebrate the Castro," which will take place at Teatro ZinZanni's fantastic Spiegeltent at Pier 29 in San Francisco this Saturday, June 4.

Each show features a variety of acts, though they always have included burlesquers as part of the show. This month, Twilight Vixen Revue (with Stephen Camarota) and SF Boylesque have been selected to perform. Also performing will be community activist, actress, and singer Donna Sachet, transsexual actress and performer Cassandra Cass, aerialist Oliver K. Pavick, singer and actor Tom Orr, circus arts performer and Teatro ZinZanni regular Ling Rui.

Teatro ZinZanni is located at Pier 29 on The Embarcadero at Battery Street (map). There is parking in the nearby neighborhoods, but take notice of the local parking regulations so you don't get a ticket!

Tickets may be purchased in advance at the Teatro ZinZanni box office, by phone at 415/438-2668, or online at cabaretlunatique.org. Tickets are $25.00 for general admission, and $35 for preferred. It is a show for those 21 and older. The lobby doors open at 11:15 p.m., and there will be some light food and beverages available for purchase.

Cabaret Lunatique’s “Celebrate The Castro”

Teatro ZinZanni announces Cabaret Lunatique’s “Celebrate The Castro,” on June 4 at the glamorous Spiegeltent on Pier 29. This will be the fourth installment in a series of nine late-night cabarets each focusing on a distinctive San Francisco neighborhood. In true Castro style, the zany performances will showcase many local artists in a late night varieté spiced with saucy cabaret, crazed circus, scandal, music and plenty of mayhem. First launched in 2008, Teatro ZinZanni’s cabarets all sold out and are now back due to popular demand. The current series began in March with “Celebrate Chinatown” and a further five additional evenings are scheduled for the remainder of the year focusing on the neighborhoods of the Fillmore/Jazz, Haight Ashbury, SOMA, On the Waterfront, and The Hills.

“There is an audience in the Bay Area that is constantly searching for exciting and unique entertainment late at night,”said Teatro ZinZanni Managing Director Susan Outlaw. “Cabaret Lunatique fills that void."

“Celebrate The Castro” is the fourth cabaret of 2011 and features a group of talented local performers including transsexual fantasy girl Cassandra Cass; dazzling burlesque troupes The Twilight Vixen Revue pictured above, right) and the all-male SF Boylesque (pictured below, left); aerialist Oliver K. Pavick; ZinZanni regular Ling Rui; and theatrical singer Tom Orr. The evening will be hosted by former Miss Gay SF and award-winning actress, singer, writer and activist, Donna Sachet.

Cabaret Lunatique’s “Celebrate The Castro” premieres Saturday, June 4. Doors to the lobby will open at 11:15 PM. Admission is $35 for premium and $25 general admission.

An esteemed member of the local arts community for more than a decade, Teatro ZinZanni is a not-for-profit arts organization with a mission to preserve, nurture, and support the centuries-old traditions of European circus arts. Over the past decade, Teatro ZinZanni has assisted other non-profit organizations including Sean Penn’s Haitian Relief Organization, Bread and Roses Family Foundation, Huckleberry House, Suicide Prevention League and New Leaf Services in raising more than $2,000,000 for charitable causes through ticket donations and hosting fundraisers in the tent.

Hot Pink Feathers will dance at SF Carnaval's Grand Parade this Sunday, May 29

Just a quick reminder that the Hot Pink Feathers will be dancing to the music of the Hot Pink Feathers All Star Band this Sunday morning in the SF Carnaval's Grand Parade in the Mission! The theme this year is "Live Your Fantasy."

The parade will start at 9:30 a.m., so it could be an early start for those of you who stay out late on Saturday night. The parade route will start at 24th and Bryant Streets. There is a Google Map of the parade route that the organizers have put together for your convenience. A good place to see them is where the parade route turns at 24th and Mission Streets. If you'd like to hang with the Feathers before the parade, they'll be staging near 2230 Bryant Street, starting at 9:00 a.m. They'll be #47 out of 65 contingents, so you can plan accordingly.

Here is a video from SF Carnaval 2008 that shows the Hot Pink Feathers and their All Star Band in all their glory!

After the parade, the Feathers will be at Casnova's Carnaval at Casanova Lounge, which is at 527 Valencia Street in San Francisco (map). They'll perform somewhere between 2:00 and 3:00 p.m. Also spinning tunes until 2:00 a.m. will be GOSTOSA & BRAZA Djs! For more information, you may visit the Facebook Event Page.

Don't forget your sunscreen and some water! Both can come in handy if you're standing outside for several hours!

And of course there will be lots of other talented performers such as contortionist Nobutaka, magician Hernan Cortez, the Displayed Labors Sideshow, and Lee Presson's Fistful of Nails! And of course, there will be fantastic burlesque performers such as Mynx d'Meanor, The Scarlet Ladders, and The Can-Cannibals! Plus even more!

San Francisco Bay Area burlesque for May 26 - June 1, 2011

This week's schedule will feature a unique show, a holiday favorite, and the return of a burlesque show from the past.

This Thursday will see the return of Bombshell Betty's Haute House Burlesque with Bombshell Betty's Burlesqueteers at Milk Bar in San Francisco. It's been over two years since the last Haute House Burlesque show, and this one will continue on the fourth Thursday of each month. It will be in addition to Bombshell Betty's other shows at the Elbo Room in San Francisco and the Uptown Club in Oakland.

It's Memorial Day, so it's time for San Francisco's Carnaval Grand Parade! So that means that the Hot Pink Feathers will be dancing up a storm come Sunday in the Mission District. They'll be #47 of 65, so make sure to keep an eye out for them if you go to the parade! And afterwards, they'll be at an after party at the Casanova Lounge at 527 Valencia.

The San Francisco Sex Worker Festival will be presenting the Get the Money Up Front Cabaret at SOMArts on Friday evening. This event will feature Alotta Boutté, The Stripping Granny, and Lady Monster, among many other talented artists.

Red Hots Burlesque
will be involved in three shows this week! There's Friday and Wednesday's weekly shows, but they'll also be at the Hubba Hubba Revue's show on Monday night at the Uptown Club for a School of Shimmy alumni show!

And speaking of the Hubba Hubba Revue, they'll have their monthly Cabaret Perilous at the Uptown Club in Oakland. It's a show that tends towards a bit more extreme acts, including sideshow performers such as the Displayed Labors Sideshow, contortionist Nobutaka and even musical group Lee Presson's Fistful of Nails!

Finally, Australia's Baby Blue Bergman will be performing at Baxtalo Drom's The Lucky Road Show on Friday evening, as will Karoline BellyBrass! So that's a show you may want to check out if you're in the area.

Have a safe and fun Memorial Day weekend, everyone! :-)

The Shimmy Syndicate Burlesque premieres this Tuesday, May 24

The Pink Secret presents The Shimmy Syndicate Burlesque this Tuesday night at 10:00 p.m. at Club 93 in San Francisco.

The Pink Secret is an alumni of the Red Hots Burlesque School of Shimmy, and this will be her debut as a show producer. She's part masked superhero, and part pink-haired alien hottie! Here she is in her stage debut at the School of Shimmy Showcase this past March.

Also performing will be Barbary Doll, G.G. Dejaneiro, and Miss Twin Peaks!

In an exchange of email messages, the Pink Secret explained that she's hoping that this will become a monthly show and that it will help new burlesque performers. "Since it's a little difficult to gain notoriety when you first start in burlesque, the idea of the show, assuming it will continue, is to be a place where new performers can get more experience on the stage."

The show will be unique in one significant way. As the she explains, "It's a little bit different format than most shows around here -- as in, we can't really have a live host. Experiments, yo!"

Club 93 is located at 93 9th Street in San Francisco (map). The show starts at 10:00 p.m., so get there a few minutes early to get a good seat. And bring $3.00 for the cover and a few more bucks for drinks!

Hubba Hubba Revue this weekend: "Wild Things" and Bootie SF

This weekend, the Hubba Hubba Revue will be having two shows at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco: "Wild Things!" on Friday night, May 20, and a show with Bootie SF on Saturday night, May 21!

Friday's show will also be a 10th birthday celebration of Gorilla X (pictured)! He started out in May 2001 with a performance with Fisherman's Famous Burlesque in San Francisco, then wound up performing at the very first Tease-O-Rama in New Orleans. Since then, he's performed with No Doubt and become the world's foremost burlesque show gorilla!

There will also be some special guests from far away. Among these performers will be Baby Blue Bergman from Australia, Lulu Bell from Seattle, and Ray Gunn (of the Stage Door Johnnies) from Chicago. Also performing in this animal-themed show will be Scotty the Blue Bunny, Lola Martinet (of the Dolls of Doom), The Indra, and many, many more of your favorite burlesquers!

For your entertainment, the musical guest for the evening will be Lost Dog Found! They'll most likely perform starting at 10:15 before the burlesque, so don't get there too late if you want to hear some hot swing!

The DNA Lounge is located at 375 11th Street in San Francisco (map). The doors open at 9:00 p.m., and the show begins at 10:15. If you arrive at the box office and go in by 9:30, you may purchase a $10.00 ticket! Otherwise, general admission is $15.00, $12.00 if you purchase online at dnalounge.com.

San Francisco Bay Area burlesque for May 19 - May 25, 2011

It'll be another busy week of burlesque shows in the Bay Area!

One of the more noteworthy shows of the week will take place at the Shattuck Down Low Lounge in Berkeley on Saturday night. It's FRISKY: A Hot Pink Feathers Revue and Fundraiser, presented by Burlesque Moulin and the Hot Pink Feathers! This is the show that will raise funds to help costume the Feathers for when they will parade in SF Carnaval on Sunday, May 29. Feather fans aren't cheap, so help boost the Feathers' costume fund and be entertained in a swanky club! The show will also feature Lola Martinet of the Dolls of Doom and Chicago's Ray Gunn of the Stage Door Johnnies. Both will be performing with their groups at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend in Las Vegas come June!

The Hubba Hubba Revue will be having three shows this coming week! Kicking things off will be "Wild Animals!" on Friday at the DNA Lounge in SF. They'll be celebrating Gorilla X's 10th birthday, as well as hosting some special guests including Australia's Baby Blue Bergman, Seattle's Lulu Bell, and Ray Gunn and Lola Martinet. Should be lots of fun! So fun, that they'll be returning to the DNA Lounge on Saturday to team up for a show with that mashup party, Bootie SF! Then on Monday, they'll have their weekly show at the Uptown in Oakland which will feature Baby Blue Bregman and Rita Braga of Portugal, among others!

On Sunday, there will be quite a few burlesque and cabaret performers at the Lagunitas Beer Circus at the Lagunitas Brewery Company in Petaluma. Bombshell Betty with Fromagique and the Burlesqueteers, the Vau de Vire Society, Last Night's Fling, Fou Fou Ha! and more will be performing under a big top tent. There will be a selection of foods and beer tastings to choose from, too. Sounds like a lovely way to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Bryn will be having a benefit show on Sunday evening at the White Horse Inn in Oakland to help with the costs of top surgery. There's no cover fee posted, but I'm thinking that any amount that you can contribute would be appreciated. If you can't attend but would like to contribute, you may do so at bryn.chipin.com/top-surgery.

Note that this week's Original Sin Burlesque show at Sanctuary Ultra Lounge on Saturday night has been canceled. Please visit their Facebook Page for more information about this and future OSB shows.

Tease-O-Rama to skip 2011, possible return in 2012

I recently chatted with Baby Doe, the main organizer of Tease-O-Rama (TOR) and the Artistic Director and Choreographer of the Devil-Ettes, and I asked her about the possibility of there being a show this year. The last event occurred in 2008.

The short answer is that she is not planning a TOR for this year, although she seemed optimistic that there would be one next year.

I'm constantly reminded of the important role that TOR has played in the neo-burlesque revival. In 2001, it was the first convention dedicated to bringing together neo-burlesque participants for performances, classes, socializing, and support.

Whether remembering the late Eddie Dane, or at the Q&A session of the screening of the film "On Tour" at the San Francisco International Film Festival's closing night, Tease-O-Rama came up in conversations. It was where performers met each other in person for the first time, or learned about neo-burlesque, or even gained a role in a film.

In fact, this year the Burlesque Hall of Fame (BHoF) will be honoring Baby Doe and her fellow TOR founders Alison Fensterstock and Debbie Mink on Sunday at this year's BHoF Weekend, June 2 to 5, at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. This event is similar to TOR, where performers from all around the world come to Vegas to meet each other, watch world-class performances, and learn about neo-burlesque. It's open to the public, so if you're interested in going, please visit burlesquehall.com for more information.

So hopefully, there will be a TOR in 2012. I'll let you know when I hear anything.

Three year anniversary of the San Francisco Burlesque Review

It's hard to believe that on May 14, 2008, the first post on of the San Francisco Burlesque Review appeared. Since then, a total of over 63,000 people have visited these pages containing more than 1,070 posts, with more people visiting as each year passes. And that number doesn't even include those who subscribe via email or RSS, which these days are an even larger number than those who visit the blog!

It's interesting to see how the burlesque scene has grown and evolved. Back then, there were fewer shows around. The Hubba Hubba Revue, Bombshell Betty, Red Hots Burlesque, and Little Minsky's dominated the events calendar. Burlesque n' Brass also had started almost a year and a half before this blog and calendar, and First Friday Follies had started up about the same time. Some weeks, there were only three shows!

All of the previously mentioned shows are still with us, only they've grown. They've expanded their offerings. For example, Red Hots Burlesque now has two weekly shows and a monthly lube wresting and burlesque show at El Rio, their School of Shimmy, a monthly show with Burlesque Moulin in Berkeley, and Dr. Sketchy's East Bay. The Hubba Hubba Revue and Bombshell Betty have also added new shows.

Plus there are some new entries to the field. Debauchery, sASSy's Seaside Burlesque, Le Boy, Original Sin Burlesque, the Mischievous Maidens Show, Naked Girls Reading SF, Curvicious Cabaret, Séduction Féroce, Barbary Coast Burlesque and more are regularly scheduled shows that have started since the SFBR was founded. Information for all of these shows may be found on the calendar above.

So I hope you, the reader, has gotten something valuable from this blog and calendar. If you have any suggestion or comments, please feel free to email them to me at sfbr AT gmx DOT com, or simply post them in the comments section below.

And now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

(Edited May 15, 2011: Added a show and fixed the start time of one. Also improved syntax.)

Dr. Sketchy's East Bay, Burlesque n' Brass, and Le Boy events in Oakland today, Saturday, May 14

We're back, and Blogger seems to have returned with not too much damage from their outage that ended yesterday. The last post was restored, and some odd symbols have been inserted into the tags. But all seems well, otherwise. Now on to the burlesque!

Today, Red Hots Burlesque bring Dr. Sketchy to Oakland. It's time for their second session at the Layover Lounge, which is located at 1517 Franklin Street (map). The session is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m. and end at 8:00 p.m. But get there early for a good spot to draw! And remember, Dr. Sketchy's East Bay happens every second Saturday of the month.

What is Dr. Sketchy's? It's an opportunity to draw using live figure models, usually burlesque performers, derby girls, drag queens, or fetish models. It's all done in a fun atmosphere with music, drinks from the bar, and contests! If you've been to Dr. Sketchy's in San Francisco, you know how fun and popular those events are. Now they're starting out in Oakland, where there are actually seats available... for now. Be one of the first to discover the fun live figure drawing with Dr. Sketchy's in Oakland!

Here's a video from last month's event. There's also another good video and article at OaklandNorth. Check 'em out!

This month's model will be Oakland's own burlesque dearie, Honey Lawless! Here is the information for this month's event.

Burlesque Life Drawing Comes to Oakland!
When many artists think "life drawing," they think of sterile rooms, bad lighting, and bored, silent, models with nary a hint of personality. Dr. Sketchy's Anti Art School is here to change all that.

Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School is the little New York art event that became a movement. Started in 2005 by artist Molly Crabapple, the concept is simple. Artist's draw glamorous burlesque dancers, compete in contests, and win wacky prizes. From it's humble Brooklyn beginnings, Dr. Sketchy's now has nearly 70 branches around the globe, including Hollywood, London, Rome, Tokyo, and Melbourne.

Now, Red Hots Burlesque are bringing Dr. Sketchy's to Oakland. The monthly sessions will feature burlesque babes, roller derby girls , drag queens and fetish models, along with contests, prizes and drinks galore.

Since it's inception in '05, Dr. Sketchy's has received coverage from the likes of The LA Times, The Washington Post, BBC Radio, NPR, The Village Voice, WNBC, Time Out London, Time Out New York, and The New Yorker.
