Burlesque Boot Camp with Twinkletoes McGee starts November 1, 2009

Sparkly Devil let me know that her friend Twinkletoes McGee is offering a Burlesque Boot Camp starting on November 1. You may remember that he performed with Sparkly at Hubba Hubba Revue: Oktoberfest! and Burlesque-Rock Showcase just last week! Here's a picture of the two at the Oktoberfest! show.

There will be two four-class series, one which focuses on solo performances and the other on working in a group. All classes are on Sundays at Shotwell Studios in San Francisco.

All of the details are provided in the class description below. If you have any questions, please contact Sparkly Devil at sparkly.devil@gmail.com.

Twinkletoes McGee, SF's newest boylesque performer and a trained, professional dancer, is thrilled to unveil his Fall series of Burlesque Boot Camp. A former member of the Trockadero Ballet, Twink has over a decade of experience teaching jazz, tap, hip hop and ballet. His debut class two weeks ago was a phenomenal hit, and now he's back for a full 8 weeks! First class is this Sunday, Nov 1st -- all classes are Sundays, 4-6pm at Shotwell Studios, 3252 19th St, San Francisco.

This is an incredibly fun & challenging workout, and ideal for either the experience burlesque dancer, or anyone looking to break a sweat and set their inner showgirl free!

STRUT IT! BUMP IT! WORK IT!

Burlesque Boot Camp will define and refine your craft. This exciting series of classes taught by "Twink" Twinkletoes McGee will give you the tools to become a stronger and more confident performer. You will focus on cardio dance, strengthening exercises, Jazz and Hip Hop dance progressions, learning new choreography and perfecting technique for the serious Burlesque performer. All classs are Sundays, 4-6pm at Shotwell Studios, 3252 19th St, San Francisco

SERIES#1 Creating and Refining a Solo: Nov.1st, 8th, 15th and 22nd

In this series you will learn original choreography and refine your performance technique. We will create a solo dance number which will be set to 4 different styles of music. This will illustrate how basic movements can be adapted to different themed acts (classic, modern, comedic, etc.). You will learn how to add and subtract sections of choreography so you can piece together and create your own exciting solo performance piece. You can take just one class, or all four, or just walk in! But it's best to Paypal in advance to reserve your spot, since class limit is 15 students. Special discount for those who pay in advance for all 4 classes.

Series #2 Working in a Group: November 29th and December 6th, 13th and 20th

Learn to work in a group setting as a team. The focus of this class will be on learning to count music, staying in sync with others and timing. Learning to dance in a group as a team is a valuable skill all serious performers should master. Students taking this class will be invited to rehearse and perform at a local Burlesque event with Twinkle Toes McGee. Due to the group nature of this series students must attend all four classes.

Prices: $60 for a four class series
$105 for all eight classes
$17 per class for walk-in students at solo series.

Class limit is 15 students. To guarantee your spot, send your payment, along with the classes you wish to take and your stage name, to sparkly.devil@gmail.com. PLEASE SELECT GIFT for payment option to avoid unnecessary fees.

Lucha VaVOOM special Halloween Eve show at The Fillmore on Friday, October 30, 2009

I once read that Lucha VaVOOM (www.luchavavoom.com) is one of the few burlesque-related events that can fill an arena. Indeed, the mixture of lucha libre wrestling and burlesque— along with some well-known comedians as ringside commentators such as Greg Proops, Tom Kenny, Patton Oswalt, and Fred Armisen—is quite the complementary combination of entertainments. It's "Sexo y Violencia!" Which happens to be Lucha VaVOOM's motto.

This Friday, you'll have an opportunity to see what it's all about as the Los Angeles-based Lucha VaVOOM visits San Francisco for a special Halloween-themed show. This time, they're featuring Miss Exotic World 2005 Michelle L'amour (www.michellelamour.com) as one of the burlesque acts. I've seen her perform twice, once at last year's Tease-O-Rama and this year at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend in Las Vegas, and she's one of my favorites!

Michelle L'amour photo
Michelle L'amour and apples

Also, the Buxoticas (burlesque dancers) will include another performer I saw perform in Vegas, Lux La Croix (www.myspace.com/luxlacroix), Moana Santana (www.myspace.com/moanasantana), Lucy Fur (www.lucyfurpresents.com), and San Francisco's own Roky Roulette (www.myspace.com/rokyroulette). The dancers will perform to the music of The Cramps, who regularly played The Fillmore on Halloween.

Roky Roulette photo
A pogoing Roky Roulette

And the highlight of the wrestling matches will have to be the battle between Los Crazy Chickens and the Mexican goatsucker Chupacabra and his new hatchlings, the Chupacabritas. The other luchadores (wrestlers) will include Las Calaveras, Dirty Sanchez, and Cassandro “Queen of the Ring.”

Chupacabra Lucha Libre photo
Los Crazy Chickens' enemy, Chupacabra!

To call the play-by-play, former San Franciscan Blaine Capatch of Mad TV and Mind of Mencia will be joined by Tom Kenny, famously known as the voice of SpongeBob SquarePants.

Since co-promoters Rita d'Albert and Liz Fairbairn have a history in burlesque, they only book talented and authentic burlesque acts. Lucha VaVOOM has been in existence for about six years, but they've just recently started to take the show on the road. In addition to San Francisco, they've recently entertained in Chicago and New York.

At $32.50 per ticket, the show is a bit spendy, but Lucha VaVOOM has comes to these parts only several times a year. So dig under those couch cushions and scrape up some loose change, because it's sure to be a show you don't want to miss!

For this special Halloween-themed show there will be four exciting matches featuring Las Calaveras, Dirty Sanchez, Cassandro “Queen of the Ring,” and Los Crazy Chickens who will battle the venomous Mexican goatsucker Chupacabra and his new hatchlings, the Chupacabritas.

In between matches, the finest handpicked burlesque acts from around the country will ensure there’s never a dull moment. As a special tribute to The Cramps legendary run of Halloween performances that began at The Fillmore in 1987, the burlesque acts will perform to the music of the late frontman Lux Interior and his seminal psychobilly band. L.A.’s buxoticas Moana Santana, Lux La Croix and the famed tassel-twister Lucy Fur will be joined by burlesque superstar, Michelle L’Amour (“the ass that goes pow”) for some raucous rock ‘n’ roll stripteases. S.F.’s own Roky Roulette, the world's only pogo striptease artist, will wow with his aerial antics.

The evening will be presided over by master of ceremonies and former SF resident Blaine Capatch (“Web Soup,” “Mind of Mencia,” “Mad TV”). He will be joined by Tom Kenny, the voice of “Spongebob Squarepants,” to call the matches and offer sidesplitting comedic play-by-play.

It's Halloween week, so you know that there will be lots of themed shows this week in San Francisco burlesque!

There's the big Lucha VaVOOM (www.luchavavoom.com) show at the Fillmore on Friday, October 30. Lucha VaVOOM is a combination of burlesque and Mexican wrestling, and this year they have a Halloween-themed show featuring burlesque acts performed to the music of The Cramps. Among the burlesque performers will be L.A.'s Moana Santana, Lux La Croix and the famed tassel-twister Lucy Fur. Miss Exotic World 2005, Michelle L'amour, will join the Buxoticas along with San Francisco's own Roky Roulette, the world's only pogo striptease artist! Tom Kenny, the voice of SpongeBob Squarepants among others, will be one of the ringside commentators along with former San Franciscan Blaine Capatch. And with Los Crazy Chickens battling the venomous Mexican goatsucker Chupacabra and his new hatchlings, the Chupacabritas, you've got yourself a unique entertainment proposition!

And don't forget that Monday starts off with Uptown Hubba Hubba in Oakland where the special guest burlesque troupes will be Jellyfish Kiss and the Devil-Ettes!

Providing the burlesque will be Honey Lawless, the Hot Pink Feathers, Tiger Von Claus, and Kiss Me Kate!

Thrillville (www.thrillville.net) is bringing their Halloween show Gore 'n' Snorefest on Thursday to the Balboa Theater. Lady Monster will be the burlesque entertainment, while The Deadlies will provide live music. The two films on the bill are Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988) and Zontar, the Thing from Venus (1966). Her love of dance coupled with years of vocal training afforded her many opportunities to perform throughout the world and to gather a strong sense of style to call her own. She has graced cities such as New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Berlin, Hamburg, Brussels, Manchester and London with her performances.

She has had an opportunity to compete in Miss Exotic World, won second runner up in the Battle Royal in Vancouver (2006), and second runner up in Viva Las Vegas 2007. Calamity Lulu and Sister Kate perform at Death Valley High record release party on Thursday, October 8, 2009

Reader Marin let me know that two of Hubba Hubba Revue's regular performers, Sister Kate and Calamity Lulu, are scheduled to perform at the release party for Death Valley High (http://www.myspace.com/deathvalleyhigh). Also on the bill are Thrill of it All (http://www.myspace.com/tokyodecadence) and King Loses Crown (http://www.kinglosescrown.com).

The show information says that hardcore DVH fans should "come wearing bruises, cuts, bandages and/or gauze, etc. is widely accepted and massively encouraged!" Should Calamity Lulu's performance live up to her name, she will feel right at home (and bandages won't be hard to find)! ;-)

Doors at 8:30pm, show at 9:30

Death Valley High Presents:
The Dance of Doom 2009

This night is the celebration of a record ( yes, an actual vinyl! ) that has been over a year in the making. "Doom, in Full Bloom" will drop on the world Thursday October 8th 2009 at San Francisco's Cafe Du Nord.

This is NOT your average rock show. We've enlisted some top notch talent to mark the occasion. Electro-Punk heavyweights King Loses Crown will kick off the event, followed by the incredible musical stylings of The Thrill Of It All. Your fearless leaders Death Valley High will take the headlining spot, and we'll have a few tricks up our sleeves to be sure!!

But to leave it at that would just not be enough. We are throwing a PARTY here folks. So we've brought in the big guns. Between sets, Ben Abstrakt will be killing it on the wheels of steel to keep your feet moving and your ass grooving! And at the end of the night, we have DJ OMAR himself dropping a set of his own to send everyone off the deep end!!!

Burlesque performances from SF's own Calamity Lulu & Sister Kate!

This will be a special night for the DVH family, so mark your calendar! Batten down the hatches! Get your excuse ready to miss work Friday! Get a pet sitter, sell the kids! Hide the fine china! And do yo stretches son! Cuz you're gonna be movin at Du Nord Oct 8th!!!
