Lucha VaVOOM and "Monster Mashup!!" San Francisco Halloween Burlesque 2010!

Halloween is popular amongst burlesque fans for many reasons, many of which probably have to do with being encouraged to get dressed up in a unique costume. And this year, there are two shows that are happening on Halloween!

Lucha VaVOOM returns to the Fillmore for a Halloween show featuring a tribute to the Cramps with DJ Sergio Iglesias! If you've never been, the show is a mixture of Lucha Libre wrestling with burlesque and comedy from the ringside announcers. This Sunday, the featured announcer will be Blaine Capatch!

Check out this video to see what you can expect at the Fillmore. Just don't watch it at work, for it is NSFW!

Among the scheduled burlesque performers are Lucy Fur, Ursulina, Lux LaCroix, and Moana Santana. With the international, androgynous hula hoop superstar, Karis!

If you go, just be aware that the wrestlers can get carried away, especially when they fly off the balcony! So make sure that you don't get flattened by a Li'l Chupacabra. That could be very embarrassing for you!

Otherwise, it's a fun and very unique event. Wear a costume, have some drinks, watch the wrestlers and burlesque performers, and laugh at Blaine. You'll not see another show quite like it... until Lucha VaVOOM comes back around next time!

The Fillmore is located at 1805 Geary B0ulevard in San Francisco (map). Tickets are $32.50, and may be purchased in advance (plus $12.20 service fees) at livenation.com via luchavavoom.com. The scheduled time is 8 p.m., so get there early so you can get a good place to stand! General admission is standing room only.

Get in the Halloween spirit this Saturday by checking out a couple of unique shows in San Francisco and Oakland!

At the Make-Out Room in S.F., the ChatRoulette Halloween Show will be mixing the virtual and real worlds in a very "spooky" mashup. It's a live variety show. It's a drinking game. And it's ChatRoulette live! Check out this YouTube clip of a previous ChatRoulette Show. I'd say it's NSFW, especially with the sound up!

The first performer in the video is the fabulous Delilah, who will be performing this Saturday! Plus, scheduled to perform will be Twinkletoes McGee, who can also be seen at the All Hallow's Eve event at the DNA Lounge on Friday, October 29, and on Monday, November 1, at the Hubba Hubba Revue show at the Uptown Nightclub in Oakland.

The Make-Out Room is located at 3225 22nd Street in San Francisco. Doors open at 7 p.m., and the show will happen from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Tickets cost $12 in advance (plus $1 service fee) at chatrouletteshow.eventbee.com, and $15 at the door. Attendees should be 21 and older.

...New to the show? Picture a variety show meets a drinking game meets Candid Camera meets… ChatRoulette.com. Professional performers take turns entertaining rather surprised users of ChatRoulette.com (and you). Projected onto a large screen, they become part of the show. All Hallow's Eve and Red Hots Burlesque on Friday, October 29, 2010

Start your Halloween weekend off with an evening at Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco, then experience All Hallow's Eve with the Hubba Hubba Revue at the DNA Lounge!

At Red Hots, Dottie Lux will welcome back Kitten on the Keys back to the El Rio stage after Kitten's trip back to France to perform with Cabaret New Burlesque. That show was where Mathieu Amalric found the troupe which he filmed in Tournée (On Tour), which competed for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

Also see Ms. Fever Blister as she visits us here in the Bay Area from her home in Bob Barker's guest house in Southern California. I'm sure she jokingly put that on her MySpace page, but one never knows!

This Friday , Oct 29th at El Rio
3158 Mission Street
The Show starts at 7:30pm! So don't be late!

After Red Hots, if you're still in the mood for some shimmying and shaking with a dose of 80s, goth and industrial music, head on over to All Hallow's Eve at the DNA Lounge, which is also being presented by Death Guild, Meat, and the Hubba Hubba Revue.

In the main room, see an aerial performance by Ariyana La Fey and the Displayed Labors Sideshow! Then see Dr. Kingfish's Haunted Cabaret Parlour up in the Lounge in the upstairs back room!

Note that this is an 18 and older event. So if you know of some college-aged friends or family who'd like to see a burlesque show while celebrating Halloween, invite them along!

If there was ever a holiday created just for DNA Lounge that holiday is Halloween. We kick off this year's 3-day Halloween weekend by teaming up again with Meat, Death Guild and Hubba Hubba Revue to start things off with a gigantic haunted bang.

The completely redecorated main room features music from the undisputed kings (and queen) of dark and spooky: the DJs of Meat vs. Death Guild. Every Day is Halloween for these musical tour guides to the netherworld, and nobody knows this holiday better.

Tremble mortals, for the Costume Contest returns with $1000 in cash prizes, so be sure to add that extra bit of polish to your costume if you want a shot at some cold hard (and spoooooky) cash. The costume contest starts at Midnight.

In the Lounge, the forbidden science experiments of Dr. Kingfish have torn a rift in space and time, creating a portal to The Haunted Cabaret Parlor. Witness the souls of the damned performing on the new stage for all eternity in a hellish abyss of velvet curtains, candelabras, chandeliers. For your entertainment, behold the spirits of many Hubba Hubba Revue performers paying penance for many lifetimes of cheeky naughty burlesque fun.

San Francisco area burlesque for October 27 to November 2, 2010

This week will cover Halloween weekend, so there will plenty of events to help you celebrate the burlesque way!

Upcoming is the big Kaleidoscope Cabaret and associated events. It all kicks off with a an educational symposium on Thursday from noon to 5 p.m. at UC Berkeley in room 370 of Dwinelle Hall. Yes, it's an educational symposium! Some of the panels and discussions will cover issues such as race, power, profit, minstrelsy, and gender in performance. It should be a fascinating afternoon, especially for those burlesque fans who think about issues of cultural appropriation and what burlesque performances really mean in terms of cultural, political, and sociological perspectives.

Then there will be an opportunity on Friday evening to mix and mingle with all of the Kaleidoscope participants at the Center for Sex and Culture in San Francisco. Socialize with the performers, crew members, academics from the educational symposium, and others! It'll be just $5!

It all culminates in the Kaleidoscope Cabaret on Saturday evening at the Brava Theater in San Francisco. See such notable performers such as Orchid Mei, Narcissister, Sydni Deveraux and more!

Still looking for ideas for your Halloween costume? Drop into the DIY Emporium and Fashion Show on Thursday at Sweets Ballroom in Oakland, get some ideas and perhaps items, and watch some burlesque and comedy, too! The show part of the event will be hosted by Ruby Vixen of Debauchery and Kingfish of the Hubba Hubba Revue! Dottie Lux of Red Hots Burlesque, Casey Castille, and others will be amongst the vendors, and there will be performances by Vera Deville,
Eve Devlin of Original Sin Burlesque, Chi Chis DelFuego, and more!

Kitten on the Keys returns to the Red Hots Burlesque on Friday evening, then the Halloween-themed shows kickoff with the big DNA Lounge/Meat/Death Guild/Hubba Hubba Revue All Hallow's Eve show. It looks like the burlesque will be taking place in the lounge on the upper level behind the stage for this one, while the rest of the music, dancing, and other festivities will be taking place downstairs.

On Saturday, the Hubba Hubba Revue hops across the bay to the Uptown Nightclub to celebrate Halloween over there. They'll have burlesque acts, a band, and The Black Widows Gothic Strip Revue will make an appearance! Plus, those Hubbas won't be through celebrating! Oh no. On Monday, they'll be celebrating the third anniversary of their weekly Monday night shows at the Uptown. The show will feature out-of-town performers Baby Le'Strange from Portland and Lola Martinet from Chicago!

Also on Saturday, the ChatRoulette Show gets into the Halloween season mood with their own event at the Make-Out Room in San Francisco. It's a mixture of live variety show and users of chatroulette.com. The guests for this episode include Delilah and Twinkletoes McGee, who will be performing at several shows this week. Look for him in the show listings below!

Then there's the shows that will be taking place on Halloween. The action kicks off at noon at SOMArts with Barbary Coast Amusements' "Monster Mashup!" It's a variety show featuring the Twilight Vixen Revue plus other performers. This will be Cupcake's debut with the Vixens, so bring your cameras to capture this historic event!

Then at night, Lucha VaVOOM rolls into The Fillmore in San Francisco for their Halloween MASKerade show. If you've never seen Lucha VaVOOM, it's a mixture of Mexican wrestling, burlesque performers, and comedy. It's always a crazy good time, and it is the only show happening on Halloween night! So put on your costumes, pack your candy in those hidden pockets, head over to the Fillmore, and party with Lucha VaVOOM!

Happy Halloween, everyone! :-)

Kaleidoscope Cabaret Weekend happens October 28-30, 2010

Since 2007, Kaleidoscope Cabaret has been bringing together bring together performers of color for an all-star cabaret show. It's a unique neo-burlesque event that only takes place this year in San Francisco!

Founder and Artistic Director La Chica Boom started the showcase in 2007, dedicating it to showcasing people of color in burlesque and cabaret. With Tease-O-Rama on hiatus for the past two years, this event and Cabaret Verdalet are one of the few shows in the Bay Area where you can see burlesque talent from around the country all in one place.

Scheduled to perform at the Brava Theater in San Francisco on Saturday, October 30, will be Narcissister and Veronica Blair from New York, Orchid Mei from Denver, and Sydni Deveraux and Aleksa Manila from Seattle. Also featured will be local performers Sandra O. Noshi-Di’n't, Thisway/Thatway (aka Cecilio Cooper), the Grant Avenue Follies, Felatio “B.J.” Browne (Stephfon Bartée-Smith), Landa Lakes, Simone de la Getto, and La Chica Boom herself.

Tickets are $25 in advance at brownpapertickets.com (plus a $1.99 service fee), and may also be purchased at the door (if available). The doors open at 7 p.m., and the show starts at 8 p.m. The Brava Theater is located at 2781 24th Street in San Francisco (map).

This year, in addition to the show on Saturday night, there will also be an educational symposium on Thursday afternoon at U.C. Berkeley and a Friday evening pre-party and social at San Francisco's Center for Sex and Culture, too!

Although burlesque has its roots as "low" entertainment for the masses, there is scholarly interest in the cultural and sociopolitical significance of the performances. On Thursday, October 28 from noon to 5 p.m. in room 370 of Dwinelle Hall at U.C. Berkeley, you'll have the opportunity to listen to a keynote address and panel discussion of Race Reveal: Racialized Tropes, Queer Performance, Political Possibilities. The titles of some of the panels and discussions include Pleasure, Power, and Profit in Race Performance, Queering Latin@ Subjectivities on Stage, and Racism, Minstrelsy, and Subversion in Burlesque Performance. The panelists will include performers such as Thisway/Thatway (Cecilio Cooper), Narcissiter, and La Chica Boom (Xandra Ibarra), among others. For a list of descriptions and abstracts for the panel please visit crg.berkeley.edu/content/race-reveal#abstracts. This event is free to the public.

On Friday, October 29, there will be a pre-party and social event at the Center for Sex and Culture in San Francisco from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. It's a fantastic opportunity to have a drink and mix and mingle with the performers, scholars, and cast and crew of Kaleidoscope Cabaret. The Center for Sex and Culture is located at 1519 Mission Street in San Francisco, and the cost to attend is $5.

Saturday & Sunday, October 23-24: Burlesque-related happenings this weekend

Though rain is in the forecast this weekend, there are still some burlesque-related events going on and about town for those who will be venturing out:

  • MTV and Screen Gems will be having a dance contest on Saturday, October 23, at Macy's San Francisco at their Union Square store, 170 O'Farrell Street (map), in the Juniors Department on Level 4 starting at 2 p.m. Registration starts at 1 p.m. It is part of a nationwide dance contest to promote the Christina Aguilera and Cher film, Burlesque. The contest is open to amateur dancers from ages 13 to 30. Winners will receive $300, VIP tickets to an advance screening of Burlesque, and the opportunity to move on to the next round and compete for the Grand Prize of $5,000 and a possible spot on MTV. Note that this is a general dance contest, and costumes should probably be "Macy's Juniors Department-friendly." For more information, and for the musical cue, please visit burlesque.mtv.com.

  • If you were planning to attend the Exotic Erotic Ball on Saturday night, CBS 5 reported that it was canceled on Friday. One of the acts scheduled to perform was Ivan Kane's Forty Deuce. Reportedly it was canceled due to a drop in ticket sales in the days leading up to the event and unexpected cost overruns and operational issues.

  • The Devil-Ettes will be performing their Pip Squeak A Go Go children's show at two events on Sunday, October 24. The first will be at the Tricycle Music Fest West 2010, which will take place on the Larkin Street steps of the San Francisco Main Library (map) beginning at 11 a.m. This event is free. The will also be performing in the East Bay at the East Bay Mini Maker Faire on the Park Day School campus in Oakland, 370 43rd Street (map). This event starts at 10 a.m., and tickets cost $10.00 to $20.00. Advanced tickets are discounted, plus use the discount code "DEVIL-ETTES" at eventbrite.com for 15% off. Please click on the links for more information about these events.

Planet Burlesque comes to Berkeley's Saturn Cafe on Thursday, October 21

This Thursday, burlesque beams down to the brand, spankin' new Saturn Cafe in Berkeley for the premiere of Planet Burlesque in the Space Lounge.

Kingfish and Zip the What-Is-It? of the Hubba Hubba Revue will bring their space-aged zaniness to Berkeley, and the town will never be the same! Be dazzled by the whirling deep-space dervish that is Delilah. Watch in amazement at the astronomical talents of Alotta Boutté. Get krazed by that komet known as Kitten Kandy. Be blasted away by Bunny Pistol. Get stunned to death by the photon torpedo that is Francine Dead. See all these performers and more, including a burlesque photography show by that photographer to the stars, Mr. Johnny Crash!

This show will be one of the few which have a lower age limit of 18, so that means that most Cal students can cross over Strawberry Creek to see a burlesque show. And it's only $5! Inexpensive enough to fit into a student's entertainment budget!

It's all happening at the new Saturn Cafe in Berkeley. Before the show, you can get some grub at this space-age vegetarian diner. Nachos, salads, burgers, sweet potato fries, mac n' cheese, and more make this the healthy alternative to dining out. And don't forget the milkshakes! I've heard they're out of this world! You can see their menu on their website at www.saturncafe.com.

It appears that there will be a monthly burlesque show at the Saturn Cafe. On Wednesday, November 17, Red Hots Burlesque will stage a show at the Space Lounge. Yay for Berkeley burlesque!

Neo-burlesque is an interesting juxtaposition of the modern and retro. As John C. McCall of Cabaret Decadence has said in a Planetshifter.com interview concerning mythographic mapping of Planet Burlesque:
We don't reenact the past, we reinvent it. We like to say "we travel the past not take (sic)" - in doing so we create a kind of provocative nostalgia for pleasures not available from the store, and lives not alienated from meaning. For the seeker, the deeper mysteries are developed further in the "para-performative" mythographics that can be traced in our web presence.
How true that is! Even though that's referring to a different Planet Burlesque, it seems appropriate here. And it's so thought-provoking! It's deep, man. And you are indeed reading a para-performative work of art, by the way.

So this Thursday in Berkeley, boldly go back in time to where no burlesque audience has gone before! Head on over to the Saturn Cafe at warp speed, and make it a night on Planet Burlesque with your crew!

Bella Trixx and Shadow Circus will perform at Les Folies Champagne this Wednesday, October 20

This coming Wednesday, join the witches of Les Folies Champagne and emcee Natasha Muse at the Bubble Lounge in San Francisco as they present a pre-Halloween variety show that will feature the Shadow Circus Creature Theatre, Bella Trixx, and Madame Molotova, amongst others!

The Bubble Lounge is in the Financial District, close to the Transamerica Pyramid. When you enter the Bubble Lounge, the host or hostess will assist you. Get there early for a good seat! Being that it's San Francisco's premier champagne bar, you may want to try one of their specials! They usually select one champagne for each act for the evening.

If you have a large party, you may want to see if you can make reservations. When I went to see the Folies, quite a few of the sofas were reserved. Please call the Bubble Lounge at (415) 434-4204 for assistance.

Enjoy!

Les Follies Champagne flier, October 20, 2010

Les Folies Champagne will get you in the mood for Halloween with a Voracious Variety Show on Wednesday, October 20th.

The lurid puppetry of Shadow Circus will dreadfully delight you and Bella Trixx has a few ghoulish burlesque tricks up her sleeve. We are also pleased to announce the return of Madame Molotova, the Flamboyant Russian Clairvoyant, and her infamous Wheel of Wonder. Of course, you can also enjoy exquisite Champagnes and the ecclectic music of DJ Blaise.

As always, Les Folies Champagne has an ongoing commitment to High Class Hooch and Hoochie Coochie for all!

Les Folies Champagne Cabaret is in residence at San Francisco’s famous BUBBLE LOUNGE @ 714 Montgomery Street http://www.bubblelounge.com/san-francisco/) - and it's FREE! You must be 21 and older to enjoy the Bubble Lounge.

Dr. Sketchy's San Francisco presents La Chica Boom on Tuesday, October 19

Dia de Los Muertos meets La Virgen de Guadalupe at Dr Sketchy’s SF with La Chica Boom this Tuesday at 111 Minna Gallery.

What is Dr. Sketchy's? It's an opportunity to draw a live model in a no-pressure situation. There will be no mandatory judging of your works of art, but there are often drawing contests if you care to enter. There's a bar so you can get something to drink, and breaks during which you can socialize with your fellow sketchers! So whether you're a novice or an experienced artist, you are welcome at Dr. Sketchy's San Francisco!

Who is La Chica Boom? She's the founder and artistic director of Kaleidoscope Cabaret, which is a neo-burlesque show that features performers of color. She's also a burlesque performer who is appearing in various shows around the Bay Area. This year's Kaleidoscope show will take place at the Brava Theater in San Francisco on Saturday, October 30. In addition, there will be a free educational symposium entitled Race Reveal: Racial Tropes, Queer Performance, Political Possibilities on Thursday, October 28, from noon to 5 p.m. in 370 Dwinelle Hall at UC Berkeley. Also, there will be a $5.00 pre-party and social event at the Center for Sex and Culture in San Francisco at 7 p.m. on Friday, October 29. For more information about all of these events, please visit www.kaleidoscopecabaret.com. And to learn more about La Chica Boom, please visit her site at www.lachicaboom.com.

New this month to Dr. Sketchy's SF is a drawing clinic with Diane Olivier before the main event. From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., Diane will work with you in a workshop to help you with your problem areas. The workshop is limited to 12 participants, but you can email her to reserve your space for $20.00 (includes the main event and a seat in the front row), and tell her what areas you need help with.

La Chica Boom

Queer Chicana Starlet Chica Boom organizes with communities of color to destabilize white heteropatriarchy by day and by night she seduces audiences with her witty ethnic drag. This El Paso/Juarez bordertown bruja has been weaving her cultural, political and sexual identity through alternative dance, theatre, performance art, burlesque, clowning and street performance across North America. Chica Boom's provocative posturing shakes and breaks the mold of submissive mestiza. Her sexual and cultural hybridism gives voice to an intentional revolutionary style of performance that depicts her multiplicity of consciousness as a fierce queer femme/macha, Chicana organizer and performer. She is the founder of Kaleidoscope, An Annual National People of Color Cabaret and currently organizes with INCITE! Women of Color Against Violence.
