Fou Fou Ha! presents..."Out of Order" March 27-29, and April 3-5, 2009

I've seen Fou Fou Ha! at some of Hubba Hubba Revue's shows, and they're pretty unusual yet quite entertaining. Along with Kitten on the Keys, they have a show at Mama Calizo's Voice Factory this weekend and next, albeit in a different theater. Here are the details from the MCVF website:

“Out of Order” is a song and dance review set in a toilet. Performed by 8 buffoons known as Fou Fou Ha!, this journey of the absurd will blend slapstick, acrobatics, modern dance, Broadway cabaret numbers and drag queen Muppets as the animated cast of characters are high jacked into a Narnia-gone-wrong voyage through a washroom-portal. Written and choreographed by Maya Culbertson-Lane, Fulbright Scholar and Artistic Director of Fou Fou Ha! and directed by Tim Barsky, artistic director of City Circus and writer of the smash hit The Bright River, this original musical features the talents of some of the bay area’s most versatile artists including Margery Fairchild, director of Dark Porch theater, Jen Colasuonno and Ben Turner from Lunatique Fantastic, Vegas Jenkins of Klown-fi rock band Gooferman, and musical accompaniment by ragtime pianist Dizzy Decimal.

Kitten on the Keys mention in Leah Garchik's column

I was perusing today's SF Chronicle--while it's still being published in paper form--and came across a mention of Kitten on the Keys and her show, "Does This Piano Make My Ass Look Big?"
-- San Francisco's Kitten on the Keys, who sings; strips; plays piano, accordion and ukulele; and, according to her Web site, "has traveled all around the world performing her unique brand of randy monkeyshines," will be featured in "Tournee," a movie directed by and starring Mathieu Amalric (of "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly"). The movie is about an American burlesque troupe in France. Miss Keys opens tonight at Mama Calizo's Voice Factory in the Mission, in a show called "Does This Piano Make My Ass Look Big?" (Leah Garchik, "Let the poles be pristine.", San Francisco Chronicle, March 28, 2009, F-8.)
Mathieu Amalric was also recently seen as the villain in the James Bond film, "Quantum of Solace." "Tournee" is about American burlesque dancers on a tour of port towns in France. There should definitely be a showing of that film in the Bay Area!

Kitten on the Keys in "Does This Piano Make My Ass Look Big?" weekends, March 27 to April 5, 2009

It's finally here! After her fundraiser in February, Kitten on the Keys is premiering her one-woman show "Does This Piano Make My Ass Look Big?" at Mama Calizo's Voice Factory starting this weekend.

Kitten is one of the premiere burlesque performers in the Bay Area, the nation, and internationally. She's emceed Tease-O-Rama, Little Minsky's, amongst others and performed at too many shows around the world to mention in a short posting.

And now she's brought us a show musically and humorously tracing her rise from dorky suburban girl to sexy vixen and star of burlesque and cabaret!

San Francisco's own Kitten on the Keys (...aka Suzanne Ramsey) is a frisky one ma'am band. Her new one woman musical: DOES THIS PIANO MAKE MY ASS LOOK BIG? follows the hi-jinks of a dorky suburban girl who is insecure, addicted, and socially impaired. Her life changes for the better with the discovery of punk rock and a burlesque rock & roll lifestyle. This world-premiere romp replete with sequins! & sass, told through original songs (written and performed by Kitten) and video, will tickle your funny bones and stir your nether-regions. Kitten on the Keys is a little Judy Tenuta, Mae West, and a dash of Shirley Temple optimism rolled into one perky package. She writes all of her own material and plays the piano, accordion, and ukulele. The show is co-directed by Dwyane Calizo & Suzanne Ramsey. NOTE: This show is for adults over 18 years old only.

Tingel Tangel with Scotty the Blue Bunny today at Cafe du Nord

I couldn't resist posting info about this month's Tingle Tangel. Why? Because my favorite Blue Bunny, Scotty, is the host! Yes, the star of neo-burlesque shows here and in New York escaped performances on the wild, wild continent of Australia and is back where he is loved and worshipped. I'm so totally expecting a drink from his for typing that last sentence. Ha ha!

Tingel Tangel Club - SF
Wednesday, March 25
Co-Hosted by Scotty the Blue Bunny & Ginger Snap
DJ JD Samson (Le Tigre, MEN)

8:00 pm (doors) / 8:30 pm (first performances)
Dance until 2:00 am!
Cafe du Nord
2174 Market Street (at 15th)
San Francisco, CA
Tickets $16
(Only $11.50 when you advance purchase w/code "friend")

Yes, folks, it's true! Tingel Tangel Club celebrates its 1-year anniversary this Wednesday at Cafe du Nord. Just 12 months ago the legendary Joey Arias christened what has turned out to be a resilient, resplendent and occasionally raucous intermingling of headlining talent from NYC and other West Coast cities and an eclectic array of the Bay Area's finest performers. While the anniversary has occasioned my own reflections on the past year, they have been nowhere as articulate as those of SFMOMA Curator of Live Art Frank Smigiel who looks back at the two Weimar New York shows presented last February in an article titled My Weimar. The SFMOMA shows began my creative association with San Francisco, and Tingel Tangel Club has extended it in rewarding (and often challenging) ways. Over the next day I'll compose my own thoughts and compile my thank you's to share with you.

I'm very excited to have JD Samson DJ-ing for us this Wednesday. In addition to being a part of the pioneering feminist electropunk band Le Tigre, JD's deliberately androgynous persona has pushed gender queer representations in ways that are echoed in her music (i.e. the Le Tigre song "Viz") and visual art projects (i.e. JD's Lesbian Utopia at Deitch Studios and the corresponding calendar). Speaking of gender queers, I'd be remiss if our anniversary didn't also include DJ Nature Boy. Nature Boy was our first DJ for Tingel Tangel, and he has been our most frequent DJ over the past year. It's great to have him back! With JD and Nature Boy going back-to-back, you better put on your cha cha heels and get ready to dance until 2a!

We open the doors an hour earlier this month (8:00 pm) to provide more time for dancing and to allow the working girls to get home and in bed at a reasonable hour. Thus, our first performance set will start promptly at 8:30p with your co-hosts Scotty the Blue Bunny (just returned from performing in Australia) and Ginger Snap (host of the monthly "Snapalicious"). Before moving to SF last year, Scotty had established himself as one of the stars of NYC's much ballyhooed "neo burlesque" scene. In addition to her own monthly at Deco Lounge, Ginger Snap is notorious for MC'ing many Comfort & Joy events including “Brighter Days Ahead” and “Suppervision.“ Comfort & Joy's Kitten Calfee has joined the Tingel Tangel team this month as production manager, and he'll inaugurate a new fund to provide assistance to queer visionaries with financial need to get to Short Mountain, Burning Man and other transformational gatherings. We'll have a raffle throughout the night to raise money for the fund.

I hear that the boys were swooning over Novice Theory. at the Eagle on Saturday, and you'll have the chance to swoon again as the prodigiously talented multi-instrumentalist makes his sophomore appearance at Tingel Tangel. Novice has been a stand-out in Weimar New York both here and in New York, and he performed as part of Justin Bond's Lustre at the Soho Theatre in London last Fall. An emerging star in his own right, Novice Theory was recently named Composer-in-Residence at Ars Nova in NYC. I am also excited to introduce Slowmo Erotic to San Francisco audiences. In naming the LA-based duo as one of The Top 100 Unsigned Bands of 2008, Music Connection Magazine says, "singer/keyboardist Kevin Hardy spearheads a duo characterized by clever, hypersexual, often raunchy wordplay delivered in an archly theatrical way."

The evening starts on a high note as Cookie Dough (The Monster Show) rolls out an opening production featuring cast members of The Monster Show. Known for his "post-modern impersonations" of Patsy Cline and Marlene Dietrich Arturo Galster debuts new material with Scrumbly on the keys. Scrumbly will perform a couple of vintage cabaret numbers himself and accompany beloved SF chanteuse Veronica Klaus as she wiles and beguiles you. Suppositori Spelling (host of Cocktailgate at Truck) returns to Tingel Tangel to throw it down with all the ferocious and derelict glamour she's known for, and Original Cockette Rumi performs in advance of his forthcoming tour to New York and Europe. Burlesque performance artist (and Diamond Dagger) Jukie Sunshine brightens the proceedings while the breathtaking beat-box juggling sensation Bronkar promise to amaze you with his vaudevillian moxie. The late evening gets a jolt of adrenaline as Scottish Andy debuts his new song "Hipster" with a group called (appropriately enough) The Hipsters, and the hilarity level hits orange alert levels with gay, Muslim comic Ali Mafi.

We're taking a couple of months off after this to get ready for our blow out PRIDE edition of Tingel Tangel, so get your fix and help us celebrate our 1-year mark!!

Little Minsky's this Thursday, March 12, 2009... plus bonus Cabaret Verdalet 2009 rehash!

The producers of Little Minsky's today put out their lineup for this Thursday's show, and I've noticed that some of the performers starred in this year's Cabaret Verdalet. Hey, why don't we hop into the Sorta Wayback Machine....

Cabaret Verdalet was at the Great American Music Hall (www.gamh.com) in San Francisco on February 28, 2009. For those who aren't familiar with the GAMH, it's in the Tenderloin several doors down from the infamous Mitchell Brothers O'Farrell Theater. A bit different kind of stripping happens there. Heh.

Anyway, the GAMH is a midsize to larger club. The main floor in front of the stage was filled with tables (with tablecloths!) and chairs. You can see the setup on the website's homepage. Attendees could enjoy dinner before the show. Half of the balcony level was closed off, but the other side had chairs lined up along the railing and also had tables and chairs. Since I was a bit late, I was guided upstairs into the balcony and found a nice seat along the railing. It is an elegant venue.

The show was hosted by Katya Smirnoff-Skyy (www.russianoperadiva.com), who introduced the acts and performed some songs from her repetoire. As the name implies, the show was a variety show. There were some burlesque acts from some of the top performers around, such as Kellita, Miss Indigo Blue, Kalani Kokonuts, Amber Ray, and many others. There were also musical acts, such as Katy Stephan. There were acrobats and gymnasts. Lots of talent on display!

Some of my favorites? Tigger (www.myspace.com/tiggernyc), who is a boylesque performer and had an act that would not play wellin the Bible Belt. It involved athletic ability, flexibility, religious artifacts and stripping. And I really like the performer who integrated rhythmic gymnastics into her routine. Her name escapes me, though. Then there was Trauma Flintstone (www.traumaflintstone.com), who is a drag queen who brought new meaning to the term "stripping."

Speaking of which, Trauma Flintstone will be the emcee at Little Minsky's this Thursday! Back to the present. Haha. To a certain extent, you can get a taste of Cabaret Verdalet by seeing this show. Some of the performers from Cabaret Verdalet will be there, too: The Flying Fox and Mariel a la Mode! The venue is more intimate, and the kitchen is closed for the performers, but if you missed CV, then check out Little Minsky's! :-)

Ladies and gents, it's that time once again to get the shimmy a-shakin', the jazz a-swingin' and the cocktails flowing. That's right, it's Little Minsky's time with your host for the evening, musical drag sensation Trauma Flintstone, some lively 1920's style tunes from comedic duo McPuzo and Trotsky, and of course a sultry line-up of lovely ladies including Alotta Boutté, Mariel a la Mode, Gia Haad, Dottie Lux, Ariyana La Fey and The Flying Fox.

Afflicted by the recession, winter depression or stressful tension? Cast off your worries and join us Minsky's. For the only thing we have to fear is a world without dancing girls, music and laughter...

See you at the bar...

SF Bay Area burlesque for the week of March 9, 2009

Before I get into the listing of shows this week, I'll put in a plug for the local burlesque teachers. In order to keep burlesque alive, there needs to be a constant flow of new blood infused into the scene. Performers move away, retire, or otherwise move on, and potential performers need someone to guide them on their way to burlesque stardom!

And since this is the time of year that classes are starting for the spring, this seems like a good place to briefly list the three top burlesque teachers I know about in the area.

First in alphabetical order, there's Bombshell Betty. Her class offerings are at www.bombshellbetty.net/burlesquercise.html. She's one of the top teachers and performers in the nation. Many of the performers that are listed in this blog and calendar got their start with Bombshell Betty. She has various classes starting at various times, so check her site for the latest class and registration information. Plus you can check out her show at the Elbo Room on Tuesday to see her and some of her students perform. See below for details!

Dottie Lux has brought her Red Hots Burlesque School of Shimmy to San Francisco from New York City. She's also a well-known performer and teacher. Class offerings are listed at www.redhotsburlesque.com and at www.myspace.com/redhotsburlesque. A new set of classes starts this week, so if you're interested in taking some, contact Dottie through either of the aforementioned websites.

Kellita of the Hot Pink Feathers has the HPF Showgirl Academy. Class offerings are listed at www.hotpinkfeathers.com/classes.html. They are preparing for Grand Carnaval SF Parade, so it appears that the classes are aimed at getting students ready for that event. Once again, see the HPF website for information about classes and registration.

Now for the upcoming shows of this week!

  • Monday, March 9, 2009: Uptown Hubba Hubba at the Uptown in Oakland, 1928 Telegraph Avenue. The time has changed, but times are still hot in Oakland! Burlesque n' Brass this Saturday, March 7, 2009

Feather Maggie reminded me that the Hot Pink Feathers and Blue Bone Express will be having their monthly show this Saturday night at Cafe Van Kleef in Oakland.

Here's a picture from their Mardi Gras show at the Red Devil Lounge in San Francisco this year. That's the gorgeous Feather Jen on the right!

Hot Pink Feathers, Mardi Gras, February 24, 2009

As you can see, the crowd can get pretty close to the performers! And everybody was having a great time, as you can see! The Red Devil Lounge is similar to Cafe Van Kleef in that both are rather narrow clubs. The Feathers perform both in the aisles and on the stage.

The format of the shows usually include the band playing three or four sets, and the Feathers dancing for three of four sets. The band provides the musical accompaniment for the dancers, so you get to hear lots of good music!

Speaking of which, Maggie also sent me some media quotes about Blue Bone Express and the Hot Pink Feathers. Here they are along with all the show details!

BURLESQUE N' BRASS
CAFE VAN KLEEF; 1621 Telegraph in Oakland
Saturday 3/7 doors at 8:30pm, show at 9:30 sharp; $10, 21+
HPF & Blue Bone Express with Guest Host: Cherry Galette!!!
www.cafevankleef.com

Hot Pink Feathers and Blue Bone Express perform their New Orleans & Rio-inspired jazz and cabaret at "BURLESQUE 'n' BRASS" at Cafe Van Kleef in Oakland each Saturday monthly!

Dubbed "the coolest jazz brass band in Northern California" by the San Francisco Chronicle, Oakland-based Blue Bone Express exposes the Bay Area to a type of jazz rarely heard beyond the Mississippi Delta. Combined with award-winning Hot Pink Feathers’ World Carnaval Cabaret dance, this explosive cabaret performance fuses music and dance traditions spanning the early-1900's New Orleans parades to the showgirl plumage of 1950's Rio de Janeiro Carnaval, the culture-clash hilarity of the '70s and '80s, and pushing through the present-day post-modern meltdown that is downtown Oakland.

“If you've never had the pleasure of seeing burlesque dancing performed to live jazz, then this is the place to start. It's like slugging down a pint of Uncle Peppy's moonshine after ten years of Nestea. It's sexy, spunky, sassy retro fun with all the heart and soul of Rio de Janeiro and the French Quarter, right there in downtown Oaktown. If you're looking for the perfect date, the perfect diversion, or just a chance to see an eminently sexy group of gifted hoofers grinding to hot jazz played by true enthusiasts, order a whiskey sour and settle into your seat for one of the best evenings the Bay Area has to offer.” --Thomas Roche for ErosZine.com

It really is a good time. So round up your friends--or grab your sweetie or a date--and head out to Cafe Van Kleef this Saturday for an Express-ly Feather-y good time! :-)
