San Francisco area burlesque for December 29, 2009 to January 4, 2010

To start off the new year, I'll be changing the week to start on Tuesdays. I've noticed that there aren't many shows on Tuesday, and Kingfish has been posting the following Monday's Hubba Hubba Revue show at the Uptown on Tuesdays, so this new schedule seems to make more sense.

So the first shows will be this Thursday and are New Year's Eve shows! In Sausalito, the Twilight Vixen Revue will be performing at a show with Olivia Travel and Betty's List at Ondine. If you haven't made reservations, though, the website says they are sold out. In San Francisco though, the Hot Pink Feathers will be performing with the Carmen Milagro Band at a benefit for the Mission Language and Vocational School and Culinary Academy at the Florida Street Cafe. Get your tickets now at www.partyatfloridastreetcafe.com before they sell out!

The first show of 2010 will belong to First Friday Follies at the Stork Club in Oakland. It'll be a special show, because it'll be a Bowie-themed show, and it'll be emcee Margaret France's birthday! Also, remember that Red Hots Burlesque is on hiatus until January 8, because El Rio is closed for the holiday.

Saturday will feature the first Burlesque n' Brass of 2010 with Blue Bone Express and Hot Pink Feathers at Cafe Van Kleef in Oakland.

Then the next Monday will feature Hubba Hubba Revue at the Uptown Club in Oakland with Flame Cynders, Cherry Contrary, and Josie Starre! What a way to start 2010! :-D

  • Thursday, December 31: New Year's Eve with Olivia Travel, Betty's List, and Twilight Vixen Revue (Sold out) at Ondine in Sausalito, 558 Bridgeway. Couples, Singles, all ages, all women, one & all are welcome. Dinner, dancing, dessert, champagne toast and a panoramic view like none other. With entertainment by DJ Tina Silano from New York City and your own Twilight Vixen Revue! New Year's Eve, $125 Per Person includes Dinner and Non-Alcoholic Beverage, Dance, Dessert, Champagne Celebration (Tax/Gratuities also included). Call 415-503-1375 for more info. 21+ w/ID.

  • Also Thursday: NYE Party with the Carmen Milagro Band and the Hot Pink Feathers at Florida Street Cafe in SF, 710 Florida Street. Dinner at 8pm, show at 9:30. $68 for dinner and show, $20 show only. All Tickets include valet parking and free champagne at midnight! To order tickets please visit www.partyatfloridastreetcafe.com. 21+ w/ID.

And it's a Bowie-themed show, too! Featuring performances by Kitty Von Quimm, Honey Penny, Twinkletoes McGee, Cupcake, Victoria Victrola, Monifa, Amateur Hour, and the GG Tanaka Band! 9pm. No cover, but donations appreciated. 21+ w/ID.

Happy Holidays from the SFBR

It's the holiday season, so some clubs, theaters, galleries, and so on are taking a break. As a result, there won't be many shows this week and next. El Rio is closed for the next two Fridays, so Red Hots Burlesque will return on Friday, January 8.

As I look at the calendar, the next shows coming up will be Hubba Hubba at the Uptown in Oakland on Monday, December 28, a special New Year's Eve show with Betty's List and Olivia Travel featuring performances by Twilight Vixen Revue at Ondine in Sausalito, and First Friday Follies on New Year's Day at the Stork Club in Oakland. If you know of any other shows happening, please let me know via email at sfbr AT gmx DOT com.

It's a special occasion this Thursday as San Francisco wishes a fond farewell to The Flying Fox, co-creator and producer of Little Minsky's. She'll be flying back to New York City to live and perform.

As usual, it'll be a show featuring a mix of Little Minsky favorites and talent new to the Club Deluxe stage. There will be burlesque dancing and live music. Good booze and even better people. And Scotty the Blue Bunny will host!

So head in out of the cold and make merry at Little Minsky's this Thursday. The show is a bargain at just five bucks! :-D

Ladies and gents, Little Minsky's serves up another round of saucy
shenanigans, vaudevillian hijinks, cabaret tunes and burlesque
beauties in one intoxicating show. The irrepressible and undefinable
Scotty the Blue Bunny hosts this sultry night featuring the striptease
talents of the daring and delightful Diamond Daggers, the ever-elegant
Vienna La Rouge in all of her custom costume finery, recent Seattle
transplant the luscious Sugar La Vie, the vivacious Dottie Lux,
delicious Honey Le Bang and spectacular Mai Tai. And for those that
haven't heard, it's the farewell performance for Little Minsky's
co-creator The Flying Fox as we bid her bon voyage for New York City.
That's right, there are other coasts to be conquered and we know
she'll be taking them by storm. And on the musical side, we have
stellar original songs from Karina Denike and her band of guest
virtuosos, sizzling vocalizations from Alotta Boutté and solo works by
the lovely-voiced Lily Taylor.

So step in out of the chill weather, grab a cocktail or two, warm your
spirits with one of the hottest shows in town and join us for a
rousing send-off for The Flying Fox with all our best wishes...

San Francisco area burlesque for the week of December 7, 2009

Looks like the shows are front-loaded towards the beginning of the week. Other than the Great Dickens Christmas Fair, there aren't any shows on Saturday or Sunday that I'm aware of yet.

The show that stands out this week is the Barbary Coast Burlesque show benefiting Satan's Angel on Wednesday at Annie's Social Club. Many of the Bay Area's most accomplished burlesque dancers will be performing at the show. Plus there will be a raffle with some pretty neato prizes. Looks like a great show!

Then there's the Bah! Humbug! The (Non) Holiday Spectacular! on Tuesday at the Elbo Room. It's a chance to see some of Bombshell Betty's newest dancers along with some of her Burlesqueteers and Fromagique. But since it's a non-holiday show, don't arrive dressed in holiday gear! Leave that Santa sweater at home. Ha ha!

If you're a fan of Little Minsky's, you'll want to catch the last show to be co-produced by The Flying Fox, who will be headed back to New York. Be sure to say farewell!

Have a great week, everybody! :-)

Satan's Angel Benefit Show at Barbary Coast Burlesque, Wednesday, December 9

Satan's Angel, a San Francisco native and legendary burlesque performer, has recently been ill and has incurred some medical bills. So Bunny Pistol has gathered an absolutely fantastic line-up of Bay Area burlesque talent to help!

From Cupcake to Madam Chartreuse, from the Cock-T's to the Devil-Ettes, from Alotta Boutté to Eva Von Slut, they're all coming out to help the Queen of the Fire Tassels. Though Satan's Angel won't be there in person, she'll be there in spirit. See the full roster of performer below. You'll have to see it to believe it! :-)

In addition to the performances, there be a raffle will prizes including Hot Pink Feathers' Showgirl Academy classes, tickets to Burlesque n' Brass at Cafe Van Kleef, art by Alice Stribling, Thee Merry Widows t-shirts and CDs, hair ornaments from Sparkly Devil, and lots more!

So join Bunny Pistol at Annie's Social Club this Wednesday for the last Barbary Coast Burlesque at that venue. It looks like it'll be a show to remember! Plus it's a great cause!

A San Francisco native, Satan's Angel burned up the streets of North Beach in the 1960s with her trademark five flaming tassels, nearly as scorching hot as her five-alarm figure! After coming out of retirement in 2002, Angel continues to be a fixture of the current burlesque revival, as well as teach, befriend and inspire hundreds of young women who look to her as a muse.

Recently, Angel has been saddled with medical bills - so Barbary Coast Burlesque has orchestrated an all-star burlesque benefit to help the original Queen of Fire Tassels!

The Flying Fox will be flying to New York City to live...

DJ Miz Margo, also known as The Flying Fox, will be leaving San Francisco to return to New York City. One of the co-producers of Little Minsky's, and a burlesque performer at many a Bay Area show, Miz Margo will be making the move in mid-December.

I'll always remember a show at Little Minsky's in which she performed. There was a fellow who must have been in his 80s sitting at one of the booths in front of the stage. During her performance, The Flying Fox danced very close to him. You can only imagine the look of delight on the guy's face. Ha ha! Since then, I've had a soft spot for her.

If you'd like to wish her well before she leaves, there will be a good-bye party on Thursday, December 3, at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco. There will be DJs spinning, and lots of dancing. It's a public party, so feel free to invite your friends!

Miz Margo's Going Away Big Dance Party

DJ's MizMargo, Jeff, Mario Muse, (and possibly Omar)
spin Goth/Deathrock, Postpunk, Glam, and other decidedly Margo-type dance songs to make your feet move.

Come bid San Francisco's Dj Darling goodbye as she leaves for
eastern shores....
** For those just tuning in.... I am MOVING back to NYC mid-december***

And YES this is a public event! So feel free to invite/share/bring whomever you like!! The more the merrier!

Great Dickens Christmas Fair starts Friday, November 27

With Thanksgiving upon us, it's time to say, "'Tis the season!" And nothing beats the Great Dickens Christmas Fair for putting one in the mood! The GDCF will start this Friday right after Thanksgiving and continues on weekends until December 20.

Pretty much all that you'd want to know about The GDCF can be found at their website, www.dickensfair.com. There's a lot to keep you busy: food to eat, shows to watch, things to buy, drink to drink. Ha ha. But I'll tell you some things that might make your visit a tad more enjoyable. Things I wished I had known before I went for the first time.

Saucy French Postcard Tableaux Revue

Since you're most likely a fan of burlesque, make sure to get your tickets to the Saucy French Postcard Tableaux Revue (18 and over, please) as soon as you get there. The tickets don't cost extra, but seating is limited and that's how they allocate seats. Last year, I got there at about 3 or 4pm, and they had already given out their entire allotment of tickets.

If, however, you can't get a ticket, you can try showing up at the show anyway. That's what I did. They had a "stand by" line. A couple of minutes before showtime, they let in the people from that line if there were still some empty seats. So I got in. Yay!

After 5pm is what the Fair calls, "Dickens After Dark." In addition to the Saucy French Postcard Tableaux Revue, there is also Saucy Sorcery. Apparently, things just get plain saucy after the sun goes down. ;-)

Dark Garden Unique Corsetry Booth and Windows

Dark Garden's founder and owner is also a burlesque performer who goes by the names of Honey Le Bang and Miss Information. Her corsets are incredible and you'll want to stop by the booth, which is like a little shop, and at least browse through the selections.

The booth also has some windows in which live models wear Dark Garden fashions. They're usually engaged in some kind of "activity." The windows and models are always a popular attraction. There's just something about people pretending to be mannequins that just fascinates us!

Parking and such

The GDCF is in the Exposition Halls of the Cow Palace, which is below and around the main hall where they have the rodeos and hockey games. You'll be sure to want to park in the lot closest to those lower halls, as the walk is otherwise a rather long one.

Oh, and parking is $10. So you'll be sure to want to include that in your budget. Of course MUNI stops nearby, and there's a free BART shuttle available.

Bring a Map and Arrange a Meeting Place

The GDCF is a relatively large event. And the area is arranged in "streets," so it's a good idea to take a map. One is available at www.dickensfair.com/DF09map-Web.pdf. It's often crowded, and it's kind of dark, so I got lost. Ha ha. If you're going with a group, you'll probably want to arrange a meeting place in advance to avoid confusion.

Restrooms

If you go on a day that's crowded, expect to wait in a line for restrooms. There's two sets of restrooms, but I wouldn't wait until you positively, absolutely have to go. Especially if you're a woman. I remember seeing long lines at the women's restrooms. Be prepared to wait for 5 minutes or so.

Wear layered clothing

I remember the halls as being somewhat chilly. You'll notice in the video that people tend to wear coats or sweaters. I don't think there's much heating in those lower halls, but the body heat of the crowd wards off the real cold. So sometimes you may be warm, other times kind of cold.

Conclusion

The Great Dickens Christmas Fair is a jolly good time. There's definitely an element or two that attracts the burlesque crowd, though there's a lot that also attracts families. For those of you who haven't checked out the GDCF website yet, I've copied the main information below.

Oh! And I remember as I was exiting, there was a dance happening at the ballroom near the exit. So if you like to dance and have a partner, you'll be sure to want to see if you can get on the dance floor. In fact, there's some video footage of the dance at the beginning of the second video above.

Thanks to DanceDispatch and CatTaylor2 for the YouTube videos!

Burlesque classes starting in December in the San Francisco Bay Area

Looking for burlesque classes in December? There are two classes that I'm aware of in the Bay Area.

The first takes place in San Francisco at the studios of Bombshell Betty. The class is
Bombshell Betty's Intro to Burlesquercise Mini-Session. It runs for three weeks starting on Wednesday, December 2. Classes meet once per week from 7 to 8:30pm. Here's the class description:

Been looking for a sexy workout or just want more excitement in your life? Come join in on the fun with this special introductory series. In addition to the unique bump-and-grind warmup and workout that Burlesquercise is famous for, you will learn the burlesque strut, how to create your own retro style dance moves and choreography, how to work a boa, twirl tassels (no nudity required) and more! You'll also learn the choreography for the dance numbers most often performed by "Bombshell Betty's Burlesqueteers," so pull your favorite lingerie out of hiding in the top drawer and let's shake it... with Burlesquercise!

Wednesdays, 7:00-8:30pm
December 2, 9 & 16

GENERAL REGISTRATION: $60 for all 3 classes!

Betty will also start a Burlesque Intensive class starting in January. click on the link above for more information and registration.

I've just recently learned that Jodi Waseca of Room for Cream will be teaching burlesque classes in Sebastopol! So if you're in the North Bay and thought that the drive into San Francisco was a bit too long to take a class, this may be the the perfect solution for you!

I've seen Room for Cream perform a number of times at various Hubba Hubba Revue shows. Jodi is known for her belly dancing skills and performances influenced by hobo and gypsy cultures. Jodi's classes will be on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9pm at Core Motion Studio in Sebastopol. For more information about Jodi and her classes, please visit www.teachstreet.com/teacher/jodi-waseca. Here's the class description she sent me:

San Francisco area burlesque for the week of November 23, 2009

It comes around every year at this time. Thanksgiving? Christmas? Well, those things are happening, too. But it's time for the Great Dickens Christmas Fair!

Yes, starting this Friday, November 27, the Great Dickens Christmas Fair is happening at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. It'll take place from 11am to 7pm, and will continue on Saturday and Sunday, too.

You may have seen the advertisements and coupons for this event in newspapers, on fliers in gelato shops, on those video screens at gas stations, etc. This is one of those events that burlesque people really love, like the Edwardian Ball. It's a chance to dress up, see some risque shows like the French Postcard Tableaux Revue and Saucy Sorcery, and just have a merry olde time!.

I remember last year Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls shot a video at the Fair. You can see it at vimeo.com/2621242. So maybe you'll see a famous singer or two, also!

This Tuesday, Dr. Sketchy's San Francisco will be presenting Eva von Slut. Bring your drawing implements and sketch pad to depict this fierce chanteuse and burlesque performer!

And with the weekly Uptown Hubba Hubba and Red Hots Burlesque shows on Monday and Friday, respectively, that pretty much wraps up this holiday week. Happy Thanksgiving! :-)

  • Monday, November 23: Uptown Hubba Hubba at the Uptown in Oakland, 1928 Telegraph Avenue. For one night, the Diamond Daggers take over the Hubba Hubba show. Join Amelia Mae Paradise, Sir Loin Strip, Fanny Fuller and the rest of the Daggers as they bring along Isis Starr, Simone de la Getto, Calypso and Summer Bowie, musical guests Vagabondage, and The Mystery Pig! • Tuesday, November 24: Dr. Sketchy's SF at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco, 111 Minna Street. Eva von Slut is this month's model and performer. 7-10pm. $10 general, $7 students and teachers with I.D. Free to hang out at the bar and observe. 21+ w/ID.
  • Friday, November 27: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco, 3158 Mission Street. Dottie Lux brings you a different show every single week! Each event promises the seductive and spicy, absurd and amusing all from local and visiting talent. Show at 7:30pm. $5-10 sliding scale, 21+ w/ID.
  • Also Friday through Sunday, November 29: The Great Dickens Christmas Fair at the Cow Palace in SF, 2600 Geneva Avenue. A holiday adventure into Victorian London, party with hundreds of costumed players in 90,000+ square feet of theatrically-lit music halls, pubs, dance parties and Christmas shops on winding lanes. From toothsome treats, to Craft Ales from local breweries, to shows like Saucy Sorcery and the French Postcard Tableaux Revue (18 and older), to the Dark Garden Unique Corsetry shop, there's lots to see, do, and enjoy. It's a favorite amongst the burlesque crowd, so keep your eyes open and you'll probably see some of your favorite performers! 11am to 7pm. Also Saturdays and Sundays through December 20. Tickets are $10 for children ages 5 – 11  (under 5 are free); $19 for students/seniors/military; and adults are $22 at the door. Groups of 15 or more: $17. Pickwick Club (Fair season pass): $55.00 adult / $25.00 children (available from our office or at the fair). Discount tickets are available online at dickensfair.com.

As always, for more information, please check the calendar above. Also, you may want to check back during the week to see if there are and late additions to this schedule. Red Hots Burlesque for Friday, November 19, 2009

I haven't received any information on this week's show, but I'm pretty sure that there will be one. The show is listed on the El Rio calendar. I'm thinking that Dottie is just REALLY busy with FEED filming. In fact her last posting, which you can read in this blog's feed just below, says she's not sleeping because she's working.

That said, you can see Red Hots Burlesque in San Francisco on Friday, November 19, at El Rio, 3158 Mission Street. It's $5-10, sliding scale, and you need to be 21 or older to make it into the bar. The show starts at 7:30pm.
