San Francisco area burlesque for the week of November 23, 2009

It comes around every year at this time. Thanksgiving? Christmas? Well, those things are happening, too. But it's time for the Great Dickens Christmas Fair!

Yes, starting this Friday, November 27, the Great Dickens Christmas Fair is happening at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. It'll take place from 11am to 7pm, and will continue on Saturday and Sunday, too.

You may have seen the advertisements and coupons for this event in newspapers, on fliers in gelato shops, on those video screens at gas stations, etc. This is one of those events that burlesque people really love, like the Edwardian Ball. It's a chance to dress up, see some risque shows like the French Postcard Tableaux Revue and Saucy Sorcery, and just have a merry olde time!.

I remember last year Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls shot a video at the Fair. You can see it at vimeo.com/2621242. So maybe you'll see a famous singer or two, also!

This Tuesday, Dr. Sketchy's San Francisco will be presenting Eva von Slut. Bring your drawing implements and sketch pad to depict this fierce chanteuse and burlesque performer!

And with the weekly Uptown Hubba Hubba and Red Hots Burlesque shows on Monday and Friday, respectively, that pretty much wraps up this holiday week. Happy Thanksgiving! :-)

  • Monday, November 23: Uptown Hubba Hubba at the Uptown in Oakland, 1928 Telegraph Avenue. For one night, the Diamond Daggers take over the Hubba Hubba show. Join Amelia Mae Paradise, Sir Loin Strip, Fanny Fuller and the rest of the Daggers as they bring along Isis Starr, Simone de la Getto, Calypso and Summer Bowie, musical guests Vagabondage, and The Mystery Pig! Doors at 9pm, show at 10:15ish. $5, 21+ w/ID.
  • Tuesday, November 24: Dr. Sketchy's SF at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco, 111 Minna Street. Eva von Slut is this month's model and performer. 7-10pm. $10 general, $7 students and teachers with I.D. Free to hang out at the bar and observe. 21+ w/ID.
  • Friday, November 27: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco, 3158 Mission Street. Dottie Lux brings you a different show every single week! Each event promises the seductive and spicy, absurd and amusing all from local and visiting talent. Show at 7:30pm. $5-10 sliding scale, 21+ w/ID.
  • Also Friday through Sunday, November 29: The Great Dickens Christmas Fair at the Cow Palace in SF, 2600 Geneva Avenue. A holiday adventure into Victorian London, party with hundreds of costumed players in 90,000+ square feet of theatrically-lit music halls, pubs, dance parties and Christmas shops on winding lanes. From toothsome treats, to Craft Ales from local breweries, to shows like Saucy Sorcery and the French Postcard Tableaux Revue (18 and older), to the Dark Garden Unique Corsetry shop, there's lots to see, do, and enjoy. It's a favorite amongst the burlesque crowd, so keep your eyes open and you'll probably see some of your favorite performers! 11am to 7pm. Also Saturdays and Sundays through December 20. Tickets are $10 for children ages 5 – 11  (under 5 are free); $19 for students/seniors/military; and adults are $22 at the door. Groups of 15 or more: $17. Pickwick Club (Fair season pass): $55.00 adult / $25.00 children (available from our office or at the fair). Discount tickets are available online at dickensfair.com.

As always, for more information, please check the calendar above. Also, you may want to check back during the week to see if there are and late additions to this schedule. And if you have a burlesque show or information about a show you would like to add to the calendar, please email me at sfbr AT gmx DOT com.

Amanda Palmer to appear at the Great Dickens Christmas Fair

Alright! Now I have "inside sources." Haha! It's like I'm a real blogger/journalist! I've been told that Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls will be appearing at the Great Dickens Christmas Fair this weekend to film an impromptu YouTube video. There's no definite time or place. However, considering she'll be in Sacramento on Saturday night for a concert, and considering that the Fair is Saturday and Sunday... And do you really think she'll get up early in the morning to shoot a video? Draw your own conclusions! And you'll still be able to catch the burlesquey "Naughty French Postcards," and "Mad Sal's Dockside Alehouse" later in the afternoon.

Although I consider my "sources" reliable, I still consider these tidbits of information as rumors. In other words, don't blame me if she doesn't show! ;-)

And if you really want to see Amanda Palmer, she'll be at Bimbo's on Monday night for a show, which starts at 8pm and also features The Danger Ensemble, The Builders and The Butchers. Tickets are $25, and the doors open at 7pm. For advance tickets, click see the Bimbo's website.

SFBR This 'n' That for December

  • The host of Dr. Sketchy's SF and member of the Burlesqueteers, Jessica Whiteside, has some paintings exhibited at the STUDIO Gallery in their show, "tiny". The show continues until December 24. Please see their website for address and hours.
  • Amanda Palmer is soloing from the Dresden Dolls and performing with The Danger Ensemble. If you've seen Alotta Boutte and Calamity Lulu perform to "Coin-Operated Boy," then you're familiar with the Dresden Dolls. Their music does seem to be very much appreciated by those in the burlesque community. So check out the show, which is next Monday, December 15, at Bimbo's 365 Club. Tickets are $25, doors at 7pm, show at 8. I'm going with Josie Starre and her friend. Yay, music! :-)
  • Nude Aid 3, the annual fundraiser for the Center for Sex and Culture, is happening this year on Saturday, December 20, at the SomArts Cultural Center, 934 Brannan Street, San Francisco. Lady Monster and Carol Queen are co-event cooridnators. Little Brooklyn, Josie Starre, Holly Highbeams, Kitten on the Keys, Dottie Lux, Citty Rich, the Indra, and Monifa are just some of the burlesque stars participating. For a full listing, please visit the Nude Aid 3 website. Admission is $20-40, sliding scale. With each admission, you get one ticket and $2 off the Diamond Daggers Holiday Round Up event that night. Each ticket can be exchanged for one work of art produced during the evening. Multiple tickets may be purchased, and each attendee gets one free digital picture from Mark I Chester. 7pm to 10.
  • The Burlesqueteers show at Stagewerx has been rescheduled for Wednesday, December 17, which is next week. For full details, please see the calendar above. And I'll also post more about this show this weekend.
