Uptown Hubba Hubba... Oakland Burlesque! On Monday, February 1, 2010

Yes, there's such as thing as Oakland burlesque! In fact, this coming week will feature three, three, three shows: Hubba Hubba Revue's weekly show at the Uptown on Monday night, and the monthly First Friday Follies at the Stork Club and Kentucky Fried Woman's show at Velvet on Saturday.

This Monday's Uptown Hubba Hubba show will feature a very interesting line-up, especially if you're one of the "burlesque-obsessed" who are familiar with the performers. They'll have the high-energy Bunny Pistol of Barbary Coast Burlesque, the gypsy culture-influenced Room for Cream, the ethereal Delilah, the dark, erotic burlesque of Ophelia Coeur de Noir, hot-as-a-piston Sparkly Devil, and the East Bay's own Honey Lawless, plus others!

Here are the details straight from the Hubba Hubba Revue's fingers...

Red Hots Burlesque Presents No More Rain

As we get closer and closer to our 2 year SF Anniversary, RHB is thrilled to still be bringing you new faces (hips, lips, bums and boobs) as well as some of the bay's best talent. Called "The Happiest Hour in the Bay" You're not going to want to miss this week's show!

This week we promise to keep you dry and wet at the same time! It feels like it's rained for 40 days and 40 nights, but as the drops keep falling so do our clothes. You don't need an umbrella to catch these great acts!

Citty Rich, Dottie Lux, Anjie Myma, Sugar Main and Bunny Pistol!

Red Hots Burlesque celebrated one year at El Rio last February and they've been seeing sold out shows since the new year! Freaky and filthy film reel brought to you by Val Killmore and DJ Alex BIG Cox brings you tantalizing tunage!

RHB Debut
ANJIE MYMA

Anjie Myma hails from Pine Bluff, Arkansas. Born on a run down plantation, Anjie has had to fight for what she wanted since conception. Being the middle child of 5 brothers and 4 sisters, Anjie was always over looked since she was fetus. At age 9, Anjie was rudely expelled from Hilary Fae's School for Young Southern Baptist Girls after allegedly sleeping with her band director. Till this day she maintains that she's neither played the skin flute nor has she ever stuck a stick in her bass drum. After several years of back breaking, finger numbing, arthritis building hair braiding Anjie decided to move up north to the New England Territories to pursue a career in syrup production. Unfortunately, due to a lack of business savvy and poor financial planning, Anjie was forced to sell the rights to her syrup company and move out west to San Francisco, to pursue a career in vaginal reconstruction and organic body soaps.

This will be the first Friday that El Rio will be open in a while due to the holidays, and this week's show will feature the debut of Vera DeVille on the RHB stage and performances by Virginia Suicide, Bitter Waitress, Kitty Von Quimm, Lady Monster, and Miss Honey Penny. Ah, it's the return of the best happy hour in the Bay Area!

This weekend also brings Twilight Vixen Revue's "Where to Sin in San Francisco: A Dance Through Queer History 1928-1942" at the Dance Mission Theater. In addition to being entertaining, this show looks like it will be educational! And with Alotta Boutte and Stephen Camarota in the show, you know it will feature outstanding vocal performances in addition to the burlesque!

Have a good week! :-)

  • Friday, January 8: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco, 3158 Mission Street. RHB makes its 2010 debut this week, along with Vera DeVille! Also performing will be Virginia Suicide, Bitter Waitress, Kitty Von Quimm, Lady Monster, and Miss Honey Penny. Show at 7:30pm. $5-10, sliding scale. 21+ w/ID.

Through scintillating neo-burlesque dance, integrated into a series of storytelling monologues, Twilight Vixen Revue is telling a well-hidden piece of our city’s history for two evenings. Audiences will travel through time to experience, with some historical accuracy, the fully choreographed shows at the Grand Opera House, Finocchio’s, Mona’s 440, and the Black Cat. San Francisco's sauciest sextet, the Twilight Vixen Revue, has enlisted other local talents to bring the past to life, including Beach Blanket Babylon's songstress Chave Alexander (known to some as Harlem Shake Burlesque's Alotta Boutte), Stephen Camarota of the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, and your ‘hostess’ for the evening, the muscular drag debutante Genie, played by Rich Bianco (former actor/dancer with LA’s Diovolo Dance Theater). Show at 8:00pm. Tickets are $18 in advance at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/91319, $20 at the door, Dance Mission accepts cash only.

Where to Sin in San Francisco with Twilight Vixen Revue: Friday and Saturday, January 8 and 9

This Friday and Saturday evenings at Dance Mission Theater in San Francisco, see the Twilight Vixen Revue in their new show, "Where to Sin in San Francisco."

This special show will revisit pre-World War II San Francisco, where performers including Chave Alexander, Stephen Camarota, and Rich Bianco, will join the Twilight Vixen Revue in recreating some of the sights and sounds of the more risque theaters of that era.

The Vixens usually put together a good show. Their Q-Baret last year at The Garage with SF Boylesque was one of my favorite performances. And the subject matter of this show is quite intriguing! It's not something I know a great deal about, so in addition to being entertaining, it'll be educational.

If you'd like to purchase tickets in advance, you may find them online at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/91319. "Where to Sin" will be on January 8 and 9. Tango Con*Fusion and Olivia Lehrman will perform together without TVR on the 10th.

All of the show details are below.

Three-time 'Best of the Bay' Burlesque Troupe presents "Where to Sin in San Francisco"

Dance, song, and pasties tell a queerly essential San Francisco story.

As the world spun wildly around two devastating world wars, San Francisco was in the midst of a cultural heyday. Through scintillating neo-burlesque dance, integrated into a series of storytelling monologues, Twilight Vixen Revue is telling a well-hidden piece of our city’s history for two evenings at the Dance Mission Theater.

From Chinatown to North Beach to Treasure Island to the Tenderloin, tourists, sailors, railroaders, still-hopeful gold-rushers and a bevy of immigrants came post-Prohibition to ogle and walk among the fascinating “sinners.” While other cities isolated their gay districts, San Francisco leaned heavily on the queer elements of its social fabric to draw sexual tourists to the city. With this tourism, San Francisco garnered its reputation as the “Paris of America” and the “wickedest town on the continent”. In this setting, beautiful men dressed as ladies and handsome ladies dressed as men danced and sang, birthing a significant queer culture that continues today.
