About our debut performer: Devillia de Dallas is a, hip-shakin, pistol-packin, fire- tassel twirlin, demonically inspired vixen that was rumoured to be shipwrecked inLondon, and has now washed up on our very own Barbary Coast. With liquor on her lips and a swagger in her hips, Devillia joined BurlyQ London and has been luring innocents with them and as a solo burlesque ritual killer since 2003. She stirred more than just hearts at many of London Town's fancy burlesque events including: The Whoopee Club, Institute for Contemporary Arts and The Hayward Gallery and she took trouble on the road with many festivals including Antwerp, Edinburgh, Glastonbury and 2005's Tease-O-Rama. You can see Devillia shake her fire tassels in Vince Ray and the Razorbacks "Jack the Ripper" video. Devillia de Dallas and fellow BurlyQ London member Delilah have recently launched a new excuse to make friends by taking off your clothes: Bang Bang Variety Hour.

BurlyCon Seattle is coming, November 7-9, 2008

Since I know lots of burlesque performers read this blog, I thought I'd mention Burlycon Seattle (www.burlyconseattle.com). It seems to be a convention for mainly burlesque performers and others in the business, meaning there are no shows. There are classes, workshops, panels, and social activities (Which means paaaaartayyyy! ;-)). The organizers also include aficionados and fans in their target markets, so it seems everyone would be welcome. Don't know if I'd stick out in a tassel twirling workshop, though. Hehe.

There are some discount tickets available thru October 31, and there are some scholarships for performers available, due October 30. They even have "out of town" passes at discounts prices. Very considerate! See the website for more information, links, and applications.

If I were a performer/producer--and I could afford the convention pass, plane ticket, and hotel--I'd give serious consideration to going to BurlyCon. Looking over the workshops, teachers, guest speakers and such, the offerings seem impressive. "Neo Burlesque and the Contemporary Scene," "Exotic Dance in Contemporary Film with Jo "Boobs" Weldon," Cultural appropriation/racism/exoticism," "Fan Dancing with Michelle L'Amour," "How to produce a show: Lessons Learned with the Swedish Housewife." Seems like they put together a solid convention. Not to mention you get to party with lots of hot people at night! ;-)

Addendum (10/30/2008): Queen Kellita of the Hot Pink Feathers is teaching a class at BurlyCon, and has arranged a discount for members of the greater Feathers tribe. For $85 BurlyCon passes, use the code "Kellita1" when you purchase tickets in advance on the Brown Paper Tickets site (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/36940).

Discount Tingel Tangel tickets for Wednesday, October 29, 2008

I've seen some posts that Dottie Lux has put out for the upcoming Tingel Tangel show this Wednesday. She has some $10 tickets available for purchase. Normal prices are $16 presale, $22 at the door. Seems like a bargain! As of Sunday at noon, she had seven tickets left, but seems like she could get more. If you're interested, contact Dottie at redhotsburlesque AT gmail DOT com.

As for the show itself...

Wednesday, October 29
9:00 pm – 1:30 am
Swedish American Hall (above Cafe du Nord)

2170 Market Street.
Tickets are $16 in advance and $22 at the door.
Advance purchase through www.ticketweb.com.
Full details at www.tingeltangelclub.com.

The Castro may be closed again this Halloween, but saints and sinners alike will converge at the historic Swedish American Hall above Cafe du Nord on October 29 for Tingel Tangel Club: Sex, Magic and the Occult featuring the one and only Penny Arcade. Drawing on the pagan aspects of Halloween and the Celtic samhain, we celebrate our ancestors and the change of seasons in this night of performance and revelry. The festivities are co-hosted by San Francisco's beloved comic and theater artist Marga Gomez and Charlie Horse doyenne and Miss Trannyshack 2004 Anna Conda. The star-studded lineup includes singer/songwriter Holcombe Waller, moody cabaret artist Vinsantos, burlesque darling Kitten on the Keys, the rock and roll stylings of the dragulous Ethel Merman, harpist Deirdre Eagan and Sophisticated Boom Boom the Dead or Alive tribute duo. Special appearances by The Diamond Daggers and SF Boylesque punctuate the evening which kicks off with DJ Nature Boy (Babies on Fire) and concludes with closing set by DJ Sunevil (Erotic Exotic Ball).

* BRAVA Theater receives a portion of proceeds from this event as a charitable contribution.
When I went to Tingel Tangel at the Bubble Lounge, there was a lot of dancing, so take your dancing shoes and prepare to be a dancing fool! The burlesque acts were interspersed with lots of music and dancing, so it's quite the freaky experience!

For those unfamiliar with Thrillville or the Speakeasy Theaters, it's a very cool movie-going experience. The theaters have the usual individual chairs in the upper part of the theater, but the lower level is dedicated to loveseats and comfy, cushy chairs on rollers. And there are numerous tables to hold your drinks and food.

And it's not your usual theater fare. Of course, there's the popcorn and sodas. Nachos and pizza (but very good fresh pizza, not the frozen kind). But they also serve hummas and babaganoush, fresh veggies, buffalo wings, sandwiches, salads, and various kinds of alcohol! Wheeeeee!!

And with the addition of Thrillville, there's the added bonus of live performances, contests, and men wearing fezzes! Will the Thrill--who is the "white, lounge lizard" guy in those funny videos they show before the features--hosts the evening with his wife, the lovely and patient Monica Tiki Goddess. It really is a fun time.

So if you're not sketching, head on over! It's a short walk down a residential street from the El Cerrito Plaza BART station. And there's street parking, too.

Dr. Sketchy's SF on Thursday, October 23, 2008

My good buddy Jessica "Tink" Whiteside will be hosting the next Dr. Sketchy's SF this coming Thursday! Full disclosure requires me to say that I'll be helping with setup and clean up, so I've got a vested interest in this event. :-)

I've never been to a Dr. Sketchy's, but from what Tink has told me, it goes something like this. You bring a sketchbook and some drawing tools. Graphite pencils, color pens, dry mediums like that. And basically you get to sketch a burlesque or other performer after s/he finishes a performance. I believe Bombshell Betty will be performing and modeling this time. And Randy "Anormous" Johnson will be the MC and musical guest, I do believe. The Dr. Sketchy main website (www.drsketchy.com) describes it as a different kind of life drawing class.

There will be contests and prizes. Not sure what they are, yet. And music. And drinks. And a chance to meet and mingle. It's supposed to be a fun and sexy time. A chance to create art in a non-stuffy atmosphere.

Here are the main deets:
Dr. Sketchy's San Francisco
When: Thursday, October 23rd from 7pm -10pm
Where: Space Gallery (http://www.spacegallerysf.com)
1114 Polk Street @ Sutter (Right next door to the Hemlock)
Tickets:
$10 advance $15 door: General.
$5 advance $10 door: Students/Teachers (with valid ID *in hand*)
You can purchase tickets in advance at: (and add the profile to list of friends for regular workshop updates)
Dr. Sketchy's advance tickets at http://www.myspace.com/drsketchyssf
So I'll need to drag my sketchbook and drawing instruments out of mothballs. Eep. Maybe I can find an old beret, too. Haha.

Oh, and Alice Stribling will be doing some sketching today at 111 Minna Gallery from 6pm to 9:30. She'll be working off some photos she took at Tease-O-Rama. It's Sketch Tuesday, and you can watch artists create art for free. Afterwards, you can buy some of the artwork, which is not free. ;-)
Where: 111 Minna Street @ 2nd St., San Francisco, CA 94105

When: Tuesday October 21st, 6:00 till 9:30.

Admission is FREE, but 21+
Gallery#: 415.974.1719
Web: http://www.111minnagallery.com
Okay. That's all the sketchy things I have for now. So if you want to draw some sexy performers, come on out to Dr. Sketchy's on Thursday. Even if you haven't drawn in a while or don't consider yourself to be a great artist, come on out and get in some practice. Or experiment!

Well, apparently I'm still recovering from Tease-O-Rama! This past weekend, I went out to the Hubba Hubba Revue: Oktoberbest! show on Friday night and the Spookshow A-Go-Go show on Saturday night. And only now do I have the minimal energy needed to put together some postings for upcoming shows this week. Oh, I forgot about going to Ruby Fuerza's *nods down to the bottom right of the blogroll* b-day get-together! Hmm... lots of partyin' this weekend. Hehe.

Some notes from the shows:
  • Lady Satan rocks! She performed a "Hans and Franz" number with Sparkly Devil at HHR to open the show. They had the steroid bottles and buff body suits with the tassels and pasties on them. Definitely one of the high points of the show! Then on Saturday at Spookshow, she did her Sarah Palin act (with machine gun toy, which she uses as a toy, if you get my drift ;-)) . She comes up with some of most timely and creative acts around. And she commits so fully to her characters, too.
  • Speaking of Sparkly Devil, I love the Halloween act which she performed Saturday. Of course there is the fake blood--I think it was fake, haha--that spilled of her mouth. But there was also the fake skin that she peeled off... and pretended to eat. Actually, there were other parts falling off which she "enjoyed" while performing her trademark dance moves. It was gross and funny at the same time. And also quite sexy. Like a great horror film!
  • I'm also loving Alotta Boutte. Of course, who doesn't? Heh. But she performed as a music box dancer to the Dresden Dolls' "Coin Operated Boy," and incorporated an, um, battery operated boy substitute. You just had to be there to see it!
There were other highlights, but I'm running out of energy! So, on to the postings for upcoming shows...

A bit about our out of town ladies:

Velocity Chyladd has been performing in NYC for over a decade. She is the producer of the most daring burlesque show "Badass Burlesque" and she comes to perform for one night only at El Rio. In her own words she is a "eclectic, shameless, and morbid dreamer who is hellbent on manifesting her own crazy, jazzy, spicy, tawdry, little netherworld.

I embrace life savagely as a -writer, vocalist, perrformance artist, painter, actress, hermit, provocateur, tattoo enthusiast, harbinger of change, solo witch and sexual revolutionary!

Stormy Leather is a burlesque performer, go go dancer, and model. She got her start in Chicago, go go dancing at Berlin and performing with Eve's Parlor Burlesque at Ozzfest in 2004. Once this tempestuous redhead arrived in NYC, she ripped through the burlesque scene like a Texas tornado. Her tumultuous performances have been seen all over NYC... The Slipper Room, Corio, Webster Hall, and the Box just to name a few. She is also a regular at Kitty Nights, Hotsy Totsy, Ixion, BadAss and the Rouge Coquette. Stormy now also cohosts Dirty Bomb, a monthly NYC rock party, with producer and DJ Supermorgan.

Jacqueline Hyde has been wooing the audiences of Seattle since 2005 with such acts as Bring on the Men, where she has educated men about Diamonds being a Girls Best Friend, and where she will soon Meet you in the Red Room, with her Insatiable talent, and she invites you Closer to her world. Jacqueline is also the producer and head choreographer for Tempest Burlesque.

Interview with Chi Chis DelFuego

Photo from Bombshell Betty Pinup Workshops, San Francisco, CA. Copyright 2007-2008. www.bombshellbetty.net

I met Chi Chis DelFuego earlier this year at a show. My friend Josie Starre introduced us, and I've been seeing Chi Chis perform around the Bay Area ever since.

One of the things I've noticed about her performances is the theatricality with which she imbues her acts. For example, last night at the Knocktoberfest benefit show at the Uptown, she performed to Adam Ant's "Goody Two Shoes." She dressed in what resembled "good girl" conservative attire, and proceeded with an artful striptease. At the end, she encouraged the audience by pausing before removing the last, most intriguing item of clothing.

During another one of her performances, she strips to reveal a Wonder Woman costume under her clothes. Her appearances aren't simply a striptease, but a well-choreographed story containing its own narrative, whether humorous or provocative, or both.

Recently, Chi Chis DelFuego has launched her own 2009 calendar at lulu.com. She's also started her own website at www.chichisdelfuego.com.

In the midst of all this activity, Chi Chis was gracious enough to answer some interview questions.

How did you first become interested in burlesque? When did you decide to become a performer?

I fell in love with Swing and Big Band Music, and back in 2005/2006 I started to take Swing Dance classes. This led me to classes at the Verdi Club. The Verdi Club is on Maraposa Street in the Potrero Hill area. I highly recommend going on Tuesdays. Anyway, I started to go to their Christmas parties and that's where I saw Burlesque for the first time. Funny enough, I didn't realize that it was Bombshell Betty (who would later be my Burlesque teacher and friend) that I saw dancing in front of me. Later on, a friend and I decided we wanted to take classes. I feel it was destiny. We found Bombshell Betty and I took classes for almost two years. I think after about 8 months I decided that I'd throw my bra in the wind and go all the way, strap on the pasties, lashes, gloves and Boa and start out as a soloist.

You have an interesting and very descriptive stage name. How did you choose it?

Thank you. My name was born when I took my baby steps towards my first solo . On August 18th, 2007 there was a recital at Bombshell Betty's studio and I was going to do my first solo. I didn't have a name so I went as Miss Anxie-Tease. I did my Like a Virgin solo and it went great but my second number was a gift for my boyfriend Shay. It was his birthday and so I came out with confetti, streamer, and balloons all glued to my panties and bra. The topper to the birthday song was my candle pasties that Betty helped make. I lit them and Chi Chis DelFuego was born.

Fire Tits just lacked a little culture. Besides I was born on Cinco De Mayo!

I remember seeing you perform your “Wonder Woman” act several times. Where do you get the ideas for your acts?

When I first started it was very hard. I felt overwhelmed by everything but now I feel the more you perform the more you see where your stage persona feels the most comfortable. Chi Chis is very melodramatic, sexy, campy, cheesy and fun.

I love making my way through some of my favorite music. Rock and Roll and '80s camp are among my top faves.

Working with Hubba Hubba Revue and their themed shows every month at the DNA Lounge is a great challenge. They push you to come up with great stuff. I started doing shows at Hubba Hubba at Uptown in Oakland in January and the DNA shows in April. They are the best.

Doing the Wonder Woman Act was a great moment for me. I work hard to find that twist that will make me stand out. The show was a Greco-Roman show and I knew a lot of the girls would be dressed the same. Doing each show has become so exciting and I love creating an act. My boyfriend Shay is very supportive and he's also an actor so he's a great partner to throw out ideas to. We both have a love for similar music and he was helpful in breaking the Wonder Woman idea and it went well with my pick of song, "I Need a Hero," by Bonnie Tyler. For other performances please check me out on YouTube. (http://www.youtube.com/user/medea5576)

It's important to have supportive loved ones in your life and in the beginning when i was green Bombshell Betty and the Burlesqueteers were fabulous and so supportive and helpful.

How has being a burlesque performer influenced your life? What have been the positive and negative effects, if any?

If anything I've found a place where I feel I can be myself. Funny, since we all use fake names. I never got into the club scene and I never understood the "kids these days," even when I was one of them. I was always a bit retro. I still live in the '80s sometimes. I love Rock AND Roll, Swing, Blues and everything related.

Burlesque has been a great avenue for me to be different than the mainstream. I was always a bit bawdy, naughty and loud. No one really got me and I never fit in before. I was never one to be a carbon copy of everyone else. I never wanted to follow what others told me I had to do. So Burlesque really was the place I fit in best. I love my second home.

I've meet so many wonderful people in this business. I just want to do all I can to keep it positive. I know it can get competitive and hard to find work but I believe in being professional, doing good work and acknowledging all our collective talents.

We are some pretty fabulous Ladies and Gentlemen.

What are some of your most memorable burlesque-related experiences? Can you point to one as being your favorite?

Being a part of the Burlesqueteers. It is where I started and if it wasn't for Bombshell Betty I wouldn't be here. It was a great beginning. Tease-O-Rama was my last performance with them this year. I will be branching out to work on my solo work.

I have a calendar on Lulu.com for next year and I'm hoping to maybe be a producer in the future. I'd also love to work with so many wonderful ladies out there.

I'm loving life right now. I'm loving getting my name out there and making friends. I love to hear from friends and fans and I love the well wishes and wonderful feedback.

I'm loving it all.

Bunny Hut Burlesque cancelled...but across the bay there's Knocktoberfest!

Yes, bad news...October's Bunny Hut Burlesque has been cancelled. And according to a MySpace bulletin Bunny Pistol posted, there won't be one until December. And no Eddie Dane as host...

On the other hand, Eddie's partner in crime, Kingfish, will be hosting Knocktoberfest across the bay at the Uptown Nightclub In Oakland! Join Dangerous Curves (including my buddy, sASSy Hotbuns!) as they put on a burlesque show backed by a live '80s band, Fast Times. Proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen For The Cure fund to fight breast cancer. A worthy cause! And fun!

** Knocktoberfest **

Come join us at The Uptown on October 11th for an evening of hot burlesque acts and cool 80's music to fight breast cancer!

• Fabulous emcee, Kingfish
• Live 80’s music by Fast Times
• Live burlesque performances by Dangerous Curves, Rubenesque Burlesque, Chi Chis Del Fuego, Miss Balla Fire, Holly High Beams, Beauty LaBomb, & more!
• Meet the Silicon Valley Roller Girls
• Charity karaoke with Fast Times -- sing on stage!
• Kissing booth, exams for your mams, and other fun stuff!
• Proceeds benefit Susan G. Komen For The Cure

If you've never seen live burlesque, it's hot stuff. If you've never seen live burlesque performed with a live backing band... that's because it's rarely done! The burlesque dancers are preparing special routines to 80s songs that FT will play live -- and FT will be debuting some new material just for the event. It promises to be a scandalous night for anyone 21 and over.

And yes -- for any of you who have ever wanted to SING with Fast Times, Elektro and Chynna will be relinquishing the microphone to the highest bidders on a handful of songs.

This may never happen again!

The venue for this special event is The Uptown - 1928 Telegraph Avenue, Oakland.

The Uptown serves fantastic drinks, is literally a block from BART, and was just voted the Best of the Bay '08 for both Best Rock Club and Best Burlesque Show -- so you're getting both in one night!

Doors open at 9pm, and we're asking for a $10 minimum donation.

We're very proud to be organizing this event.

Please, come out to support a good cause and see Fast Times like you've never seen it before!

Okay. Say you're absolutely against going across a bridge. All is not lost! Tease-O-Rama MC Kitten on the Keys is appearing with local ecdysiast Mariel A la Mode at Teatro ZinZanni's Cabaret Lunatique! Saturday, October 11 only!

From what I gather, Cabaret Lunatique is on the Embarcadero (at Battery) in the Teatro Zinzanni tent at Pier 29. El Vez hosts, and there are various cabaret acts. The show starts at 11pm and runs about three hours. Best of all, it's "only" $20. Considering that the usual Teatro Zinzanni show is about $100, I may go just to see what's in the tent. Hehe.

There are also shows featuring different performers on October 25 and November 8. For more information, and to purchase tickets, please visit http://love.zinzanni.org/cabaret.htm.

From the archives of Google and Archive.org

I used that Google 10th Anniversary link on their homepage to see what was on the web a decade ago about burlesque in SF. I found one interesting article on cabaret in SF from 1998. Includes a mention of Paul Nathan as a drunken magician!

http://web.archive.org/web/20010719161604/www.metroactive.com/papers/sfmetro/06.15.98/cabaret-9822.html

I suppose back then there weren't many burlesque shows in the City, and probably fewer that posted online! People were still using Netscape Navigator on their 333 MHz PCs. Hehe.

It's interesting to witness how burlesque has reemerged in the past decade, and how it continues to grow and evolve.

Tease-O-Rama 2008 in review

Here's what stands out in my memory of four days of Tease-O-Rama burlesque in San Francisco, in no particular order.
  • Jo "Boobs" Weldon dancing to Blue Oyster Cult's "Godzilla"... While wearing a Godzilla costume! Nothing like a stripteasing monster reptile to tickle the funny bone!
  • Legendary burlesquer Satan's Angel telling the audience that the club's management told her she couldn't perform with her fiery tassles. Then saying she told them she was going out into the street after the show and lighting them up...and then doing it!
  • Catherine D'Lish sensuously dancing with feather fans, then sliding into a giant champagne glass and spinning around. That was the first time I've seen her live, and it was a treat!
  • Legend Holiday O'Hara coming out complete with assistant and a walker in her final stage appearance. Then absolutely killing and getting one of the largest standing ovations of the night.
  • Michelle L'amour. Oh my, she was so glamorous and sexy. And I think she winked at me! ;-)
  • The gold splendor that was Kalani Kokonuts's costume. Gold, gold, and more flowing gold. An incredible visual spectacle.
  • Kitten De Ville coming out near the four hour mark and shaking her hips like there was no tomorrow. She definitely brought some energy to the room!
  • Miss Polly Wood. She performed a light-hearted tribute to Alfred Hitchcock's "Vertigo" in the City by the Bay complete with dizzying spins. Incredibly cute and fun. Now I know why it's said that everyone wants to be in Polly Wood! ;-)
  • Miss Indigo Blue encouraging the audiences applause and by moving so gracefully. Fantastic costuming, too. She absolutely transforms herself. I didn't recognize her at the Thursday Meet and Mingle Party.
  • Kitten on the Keys making it as host through 10 hours of burlesque with never-ending humor, grit, musicality, and grace. She made it look easy!
  • Kellita of the Hot Pink Feathers, Miss Indigo Blue, and Miss Delirium Tremens dancing below a screen showing images of Dean Martin at the Tease-O-Rama Movie Nite, presented by Thrillville at the Cerrito Speakeasy Theater.
  • Speaking of the Hot Pink Feathers, their performance with their All-Star band. I've heard numerous people say that they loved the Feathers. And I heard more than one person say that Kellita's solo performance was muy caliente! I agree!
And these were only the on-stage highlights! Heh. It was a very memorable first Tease-O-Rama for me. I particularly enjoyed seeing performers from elsewhere whom I've only read about. It was a real treat.

And I'm truly impressed by what Baby Doe and Alan Parowski were able to accomplish. It was a huge show, and it seems that they had only volunteers to help. Incredible.

If you're curious about what went on, you can watch a recording of one of the shows at http://www.teaseorama.com/webcast.html. Just fiddle with the buttons until you get the recorded show, which seems like Friday's.

I'm looking forward to next year!
