The Flying Fox will be flying to New York City to live...

DJ Miz Margo, also known as The Flying Fox, will be leaving San Francisco to return to New York City. One of the co-producers of Little Minsky's, and a burlesque performer at many a Bay Area show, Miz Margo will be making the move in mid-December.

I'll always remember a show at Little Minsky's in which she performed. There was a fellow who must have been in his 80s sitting at one of the booths in front of the stage. During her performance, The Flying Fox danced very close to him. You can only imagine the look of delight on the guy's face. Ha ha! Since then, I've had a soft spot for her.

If you'd like to wish her well before she leaves, there will be a good-bye party on Thursday, December 3, at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco. There will be DJs spinning, and lots of dancing. It's a public party, so feel free to invite your friends!

Miz Margo's Going Away Big Dance Party

DJ's MizMargo, Jeff, Mario Muse, (and possibly Omar)
spin Goth/Deathrock, Postpunk, Glam, and other decidedly Margo-type dance songs to make your feet move.

Come bid San Francisco's Dj Darling goodbye as she leaves for
eastern shores....
** For those just tuning in.... I am MOVING back to NYC mid-december***

And YES this is a public event! So feel free to invite/share/bring whomever you like!! The more the merrier!

Great Dickens Christmas Fair starts Friday, November 27

With Thanksgiving upon us, it's time to say, "'Tis the season!" And nothing beats the Great Dickens Christmas Fair for putting one in the mood! The GDCF will start this Friday right after Thanksgiving and continues on weekends until December 20.

Pretty much all that you'd want to know about The GDCF can be found at their website, www.dickensfair.com. There's a lot to keep you busy: food to eat, shows to watch, things to buy, drink to drink. Ha ha. But I'll tell you some things that might make your visit a tad more enjoyable. Things I wished I had known before I went for the first time.

Saucy French Postcard Tableaux Revue

Since you're most likely a fan of burlesque, make sure to get your tickets to the Saucy French Postcard Tableaux Revue (18 and over, please) as soon as you get there. The tickets don't cost extra, but seating is limited and that's how they allocate seats. Last year, I got there at about 3 or 4pm, and they had already given out their entire allotment of tickets.

If, however, you can't get a ticket, you can try showing up at the show anyway. That's what I did. They had a "stand by" line. A couple of minutes before showtime, they let in the people from that line if there were still some empty seats. So I got in. Yay!

After 5pm is what the Fair calls, "Dickens After Dark." In addition to the Saucy French Postcard Tableaux Revue, there is also Saucy Sorcery. Apparently, things just get plain saucy after the sun goes down. ;-)

Dark Garden Unique Corsetry Booth and Windows

Dark Garden's founder and owner is also a burlesque performer who goes by the names of Honey Le Bang and Miss Information. Her corsets are incredible and you'll want to stop by the booth, which is like a little shop, and at least browse through the selections.

The booth also has some windows in which live models wear Dark Garden fashions. They're usually engaged in some kind of "activity." The windows and models are always a popular attraction. There's just something about people pretending to be mannequins that just fascinates us!

Parking and such

The GDCF is in the Exposition Halls of the Cow Palace, which is below and around the main hall where they have the rodeos and hockey games. You'll be sure to want to park in the lot closest to those lower halls, as the walk is otherwise a rather long one.

Oh, and parking is $10. So you'll be sure to want to include that in your budget. Of course MUNI stops nearby, and there's a free BART shuttle available.

Bring a Map and Arrange a Meeting Place

The GDCF is a relatively large event. And the area is arranged in "streets," so it's a good idea to take a map. One is available at www.dickensfair.com/DF09map-Web.pdf. It's often crowded, and it's kind of dark, so I got lost. Ha ha. If you're going with a group, you'll probably want to arrange a meeting place in advance to avoid confusion.

Restrooms

If you go on a day that's crowded, expect to wait in a line for restrooms. There's two sets of restrooms, but I wouldn't wait until you positively, absolutely have to go. Especially if you're a woman. I remember seeing long lines at the women's restrooms. Be prepared to wait for 5 minutes or so.

Wear layered clothing

I remember the halls as being somewhat chilly. You'll notice in the video that people tend to wear coats or sweaters. I don't think there's much heating in those lower halls, but the body heat of the crowd wards off the real cold. So sometimes you may be warm, other times kind of cold.

Conclusion

The Great Dickens Christmas Fair is a jolly good time. There's definitely an element or two that attracts the burlesque crowd, though there's a lot that also attracts families. For those of you who haven't checked out the GDCF website yet, I've copied the main information below.

Oh! And I remember as I was exiting, there was a dance happening at the ballroom near the exit. So if you like to dance and have a partner, you'll be sure to want to see if you can get on the dance floor. In fact, there's some video footage of the dance at the beginning of the second video above.

Thanks to DanceDispatch and CatTaylor2 for the YouTube videos!

Burlesque classes starting in December in the San Francisco Bay Area

Looking for burlesque classes in December? There are two classes that I'm aware of in the Bay Area.

The first takes place in San Francisco at the studios of Bombshell Betty. The class is
Bombshell Betty's Intro to Burlesquercise Mini-Session. It runs for three weeks starting on Wednesday, December 2. Classes meet once per week from 7 to 8:30pm. Here's the class description:

Been looking for a sexy workout or just want more excitement in your life? Come join in on the fun with this special introductory series. In addition to the unique bump-and-grind warmup and workout that Burlesquercise is famous for, you will learn the burlesque strut, how to create your own retro style dance moves and choreography, how to work a boa, twirl tassels (no nudity required) and more! You'll also learn the choreography for the dance numbers most often performed by "Bombshell Betty's Burlesqueteers," so pull your favorite lingerie out of hiding in the top drawer and let's shake it... with Burlesquercise!

December 2, 9 & 16

GENERAL REGISTRATION: $60 for all 3 classes!

I've just recently learned that Jodi Waseca of Room for Cream will be teaching burlesque classes in Sebastopol! So if you're in the North Bay and thought that the drive into San Francisco was a bit too long to take a class, this may be the the perfect solution for you!

I've seen Room for Cream perform a number of times at various Hubba Hubba Revue shows. Jodi is known for her belly dancing skills and performances influenced by hobo and gypsy cultures. If you'd like to see some videos of her performances, check out www.myspace.com/roomfercream and www.myspace.com/t_lulajai.

Jodi's classes will be on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9pm at Core Motion Studio in Sebastopol. For more information about Jodi and her classes, please visit www.teachstreet.com/teacher/jodi-waseca. Here's the class description she sent me:

San Francisco area burlesque for the week of November 23, 2009

It comes around every year at this time. Thanksgiving? Christmas? Well, those things are happening, too. But it's time for the Great Dickens Christmas Fair!

Yes, starting this Friday, November 27, the Great Dickens Christmas Fair is happening at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. It'll take place from 11am to 7pm, and will continue on Saturday and Sunday, too.

You may have seen the advertisements and coupons for this event in newspapers, on fliers in gelato shops, on those video screens at gas stations, etc. This is one of those events that burlesque people really love, like the Edwardian Ball. It's a chance to dress up, see some risque shows like the French Postcard Tableaux Revue and Saucy Sorcery, and just have a merry olde time!.

I remember last year Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls shot a video at the Fair. You can see it at vimeo.com/2621242. So maybe you'll see a famous singer or two, also!

This Tuesday, Dr. Sketchy's San Francisco will be presenting Eva von Slut. Bring your drawing implements and sketch pad to depict this fierce chanteuse and burlesque performer!

And with the weekly Uptown Hubba Hubba and Red Hots Burlesque shows on Monday and Friday, respectively, that pretty much wraps up this holiday week. Happy Thanksgiving! :-)

  • Friday, November 27: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco, 3158 Mission Street. Dottie Lux brings you a different show every single week! Each event promises the seductive and spicy, absurd and amusing all from local and visiting talent. Show at 7:30pm. $5-10 sliding scale, 21+ w/ID.

Fromagique CD on sale now! See Fromagique live on Monday!

When I'm putting together the burlesque events calendar, do you know how I keep my energy up and get into that burly-mood? That's right! I listen to Fromagique's new CD, "We Are Fromagique"!

From standards like "When The Saints Go Marching In" and "Sway," to A. Randall Johnson original compositions like "Pineapple" and "Sakitini," this a collection of songs that have that special burlesque sound and feel.

All of the songs were arranged by A. Randall Johnson, also known as Randy. Lead vocals are performed by San Francisco's own Bombshell Betty on six of the fifteen songs.

This CD makes a great stocking stuffer for the upcoming holiday season for that burlesque or jazz fan that is on your list. Or, it's the perfect CD to play during that holiday party with friends and family!

If you'd like to hear some samples, Fromagique has loaded some of their songs on their MySpace profile at www.myspace.com/fromagique.

You can purchase "We Are Fromagique" through www.bombshellbettydance.com/cd.html. The CDs are $15 plus shipping and tax if applicable.

You may also purchase the CD this Monday, November 16, when Fromagique will perform live at the Uptown Club. Look at the tables in the back of the room with the stage, just before you reach the door that opens out onto the outdoor patio area.

In addition to Fromagique, it'll be Bombshell Betty® Burlesqueteer Night, so you'll be able to see Bombshell Betty's students past and present perform on the big stage of the Uptown. In addition, Sahara Dunes of Portland will be a special guest star!

MONDAY, Nov. 16th! The Burlesqueteers return to the Uptown Club, accompanied as always by those brassy maestros of good times, Fromagique!

It's Hubba Hubba Revue & Bombshell Betty® Burlesqueteer night at the Uptown Club!

San Francisco area burlesque for the week of November 9, 2009

Well, it's back to the normal balance of San Francisco and East Bay shows this week. And it looks like a busy week indeed!

The biggest show of the week seems to be the Devil-Ettes' (www.devilettes.com) Go Go Spectacular on Friday and Saturday. I remember talking with the Assassin of the Devil-Ettes at a show recently and she was saying that it's gonna be a great show. They've put a lot of work into it, and it's gonna be like a 1960s era variety show. So cool! And if you'd like to volunteer at a show on one day, you can see the show on the other day for free! They need help at will call, selling tickets, working the merchandise table, checking id's, usher, etc. Contact Kerry at kerryzobel@yahoo.com for more information or to volunteer. Let her know which day you would like to volunteer and if you have a preference as to what you would like to do.

Wow! It looks like Manchego of New York City is visiting our fair city! He'll be performing on Thursday at Little Minsky's at Club Deluxe and on Friday at Red Hots Burlesque. Also performing in those two shows is Sahara Dunes of Portland.

There's a benefit show for Paulie Milagros Schreck at El Rio on Tuesday. That one will feature Kentucky Fried Woman and various drag, burlesque, and live music acts.

Ooh! Barbary Coast Burlesque is having a comic strip and heroes and villains show. That should be fun! And there's a great line-up of local talent performing, too.

The Twilight Vixen Revue will be in a special collaborative show with a magician and a live band at the Jewish Theatre on Friday.

Looking over the week, there seems to be a show for every taste in burlesque. And it's one of those rare weeks when there's a show for every night of the week. It's sort of like New York City! Must be the Manchego influence. Ha ha. :-)

Enjoy!

Hubba Hubba Revue and Shotgun Cabaret featured in Berkeley Daily Planet

There's a really cool article about Hubba Hubba Revue and Shotgun Cabaret in today's (November 5, 2009) issue of the Berkeley Daily Planet, written by Ken Bullock.

In the interview, Kingfish, also known as Jim Sweeney, talks about how this Saturday's show will be a scripted play about how people put on a burlesque show, the appeal of burlesque, how the Shotgun Players become involved, and about the various aspects of the burlesque scene in the Bay Area.

It's a good read. Check it out!
