Yes, starting this Friday, November 27, the Great Dickens Christmas Fair is happening at the Cow Palace in San Francisco. It'll take place from 11am to 7pm, and will continue on Saturday and Sunday, too.
You may have seen the advertisements and coupons for this event in newspapers, on fliers in gelato shops, on those video screens at gas stations, etc. This is one of those events that burlesque people really love, like the Edwardian Ball. It's a chance to dress up, see some risque shows like the French Postcard Tableaux Revue and Saucy Sorcery, and just have a merry olde time!.
I remember last year Amanda Palmer of the Dresden Dolls shot a video at the Fair. You can see it at vimeo.com/2621242. So maybe you'll see a famous singer or two, also!
This Tuesday, Dr. Sketchy's San Francisco will be presenting Eva von Slut. Bring your drawing implements and sketch pad to depict this fierce chanteuse and burlesque performer!
And with the weekly Uptown Hubba Hubba and Red Hots Burlesque shows on Monday and Friday, respectively, that pretty much wraps up this holiday week. Happy Thanksgiving! :-)
- Monday, November 23: Uptown Hubba Hubba at the Uptown in Oakland, 1928 Telegraph Avenue. For one night, the Diamond Daggers take over the Hubba Hubba show. Join Amelia Mae Paradise, Sir Loin Strip, Fanny Fuller and the rest of the Daggers as they bring along Isis Starr, Simone de la Getto, Calypso and Summer Bowie, musical guests Vagabondage, and The Mystery Pig! Doors at 9pm, show at 10:15ish. $5, 21+ w/ID.
- Tuesday, November 24: Dr. Sketchy's SF at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco, 111 Minna Street. Eva von Slut is this month's model and performer. 7-10pm. $10 general, $7 students and teachers with I.D. Free to hang out at the bar and observe. 21+ w/ID.
- Friday, November 27: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco, 3158 Mission Street. Dottie Lux brings you a different show every single week! Each event promises the seductive and spicy, absurd and amusing all from local and visiting talent. Show at 7:30pm. $5-10 sliding scale, 21+ w/ID.
- Also Friday through Sunday, November 29: The Great Dickens Christmas Fair at the Cow Palace in SF, 2600 Geneva Avenue. A holiday adventure into Victorian London, party with hundreds of costumed players in 90,000+ square feet of theatrically-lit music halls, pubs, dance parties and Christmas shops on winding lanes. From toothsome treats, to Craft Ales from local breweries, to shows like Saucy Sorcery and the French Postcard Tableaux Revue (18 and older), to the Dark Garden Unique Corsetry shop, there's lots to see, do, and enjoy. It's a favorite amongst the burlesque crowd, so keep your eyes open and you'll probably see some of your favorite performers! 11am to 7pm. Also Saturdays and Sundays through December 20. Tickets are $10 for children ages 5 – 11 (under 5 are free); $19 for students/seniors/military; and adults are $22 at the door. Groups of 15 or more: $17. Pickwick Club (Fair season pass): $55.00 adult / $25.00 children (available from our office or at the fair). Discount tickets are available online at dickensfair.com.
