San Francisco Bay Area burlesque for February 17-23, 2011

Looking over the shows for the upcoming week, it seems that there's a bit of a love hangover.

From "Love Stinks" with Naked Girls Reading, to Burlesque Moulin's "Amour, the Many Faces of Love," to a Debauchery Valentine's celebration, love is still in the air, no matter what it smells like! So if you still don't want to let the holiday go, there's still some opportunities to extend the season. In addition to buying all that clearance candy, of course!

But there's also shows that don't have that theme. So there's a good variety to be had this week. And if you're an artist, Dr. Sketchy's SF will be featuring the Bay Area Derby Girls. Always fun subjects to draw!

Have fun!

  • Thursday, February 17: Naked Girls Reading: San Francisco presents "LOVE STINKS" at Viracocha in San Francisco, 998 Valencia Street (map). All Naked Girls Reading chapters will have the theme: LOVE STINKS for their February events. Love isn't just about a box of chocolates, roses and sunshine. Thorns and emotional thunderstorms come with it too. This month's cast will include Carol Queen PhD, Lady Monster, and Ophelia Coeur de Noir! With special guests Will "the Thrill" Viharo and Monica "Tiki Goddess" Cortes-Viharo, who will be reading from Will's books, "A Mermaid Drowns in the Midnight Lounge" and "Lavender Blonde." Doors at 8pm, show at 8:30. $15 general admission, $20 front row seats. Advance discounted tickets available at ngrsf.eventbrite.com. 18+.

  • Friday, February 18: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco, 3158 Mission Street (map). San Francisco's only weekly burlesque show is back! This week, the show will feature birthday girl Monifa, and RHB debut performances from Dixie DeLish, Brently Heilbron (Austin) and Judy Luck (Los Angeles)! With even more performances by Dottie Lux, Milkshake, and Nicki Sparxx! 7:30pm. $5-$10 sliding scale. 21+.

  • Saturday, February 19: Burlesque Moulin presents "Amour: The Many Faces of Love" at the Shattuck Down Low in Berkeley, 2284 Shattuck Avenue (map). Along with the cast, explore the many facets and meanings of love. Your Mistress of Ceremonies will be Alotta Boutté, and the performers will include Casey Castille (Chanteuse), Monique (Chanteuse), Dottie Lux, Miss Balla Fire, Hernan Cortez (Magician), Delilah, Bunny Pistol, Lady Monster (Spoken Word Artiste), Madame Chartreuse, and Ophelia Coeur de Noir! With the DJ stylings of Monsieur Keylo Valenzuela, and House Mistress Extraordinaire, Bitter Waitress. Food by Chef Anna Rose (serving up tasty French treats!) Doors at 7:30pm, show at 8:30. Tickets $7 for Cal students, $12 general admission, $20 (GA plus a glass of champagne), $50 table for two plus a bottle of champagne, $160 booth for six plus two bottles of champagne. 21+. After party with DJ El Diablo to follow, free before 11pm.

  • Also Saturday: Original Sin Burlesque at Sanctuary Ultra Lounge in Livermore, 2369 First Street (map). Join OSB at Sanctuary Ultra Lounge for one of many third-Saturday burlesque shows! Enjoy great drinks and tapas...and of course, the gals of Original Sin Burlesque! 10pm. $5. 21+.

San Francisco Bay Area burlesque for January 19 to 25, 2011

It's the week of the Edwardian Ball and World's Faire, so it's not surprising that there aren't lots of shows scheduled this week. It takes a lot of time to get those costumes prepared!

On Friday night, Kingfish of the Hubba Hubba Revue will be hosting the Edwardian World's Faire. On Saturday night, one of the DJs will be Miz Margo (aka The Flying Fox). If you go this weekend, you'll probably see a number of burlesque performers and fans at the Regency Ballroom.

That's not to say that it's the only thing happening this week. Oh no! On Thursday, Lady Monster presents Naked Girls Reading San Francisco: Dr. Seuss! See the regular cast members and special guest Ophelia Coeur de Noir read selections from Dr. Seuss selections. And I found the quote in the event description below from "One Fish, Two Fish." Seemed appropriate!

Barbary Coast Burlesque returns to the Impala on Sunday, and of course Red Hots Burlesque happens on Friday evening. The Stripping Granny has been elevated to special guest star for Monday night's Hubba Hubba Revue show at the Uptown in Oakland. She's been quite the sensation at various burlesque shows recently!

So get your costumes ready, and go forth to the Edwardian Ball and cosplay! Then patronize your favorite burlesque shows!

  • Thursday, January 20: Naked Girls Reading Dr. Seuss at Viracocha in San Francisco, 998 Valencia Street (map). "If you never did, you should. These things are fun, and fun is good." Naked Girls Reading is what you think it is. Naked girls. Reading Dr. Seuss. With regular cast members Carol Queen PhD, Dottie Lux, Kimberlee Cline, Lady Monster and Ruby Vixen. With special guest Ophelia Coeur de Noir. Doors at 8:00pm, show at 8:30. Front row seats are $20.00. General admission is $15.00. Advance tickets at ngrsf.eventbrite.com. 18+.

  • Friday, January 21: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco, 3158 Mission Street (map). Red Hots is San Francisco's only weekly burlesque show! This week, the show will feature performances by Dottie Lux , Boo Boo Darlin' (Richmond, VA), The Flying Fox (NYC), Ginger Murray, Kitty Von Quim and Patricia Misery! 7:30pm. $5-$10 slinging scale. 21+.

  • Also Friday and Saturday, January 22: The Edwardian Ball and World's Faire at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, 1300 Van Ness Avenue (map). Join Paradox Media and Vau de Vire for the eleventh Edwardian Ball and World's Faire. This year's Ball is based around Edward Gorey's “The Eleventh Episode.” This “quintessential must-never-miss event of the year” presents an elegant, turn of the century celebration of music, theatre, circus arts, bands, DJs, ballroom dance, fashion, technology and, of course, the ominous art and stories of beloved author and illustrator Edward Gorey. Hosted by Edwardian Ball co-creators Rosin Coven and Vau de Vire Society, the nights promise an unforgettable blend of audience participation and performance with darkness, humor, and style in a stunning historic venue. The event also features “Belle of the Ball” Jill Tracy, DJs Miz Margo, Delachaux, and GlobalRuckus, Dark Garden Corsetry, Fou Fou HA!, Gomorran Social Aid & Pleasure Club, Flynn Creek Circus, Vima Vice Squad, ballroom dancing, antique portrait studio, authentic tea parlor, extensive vendor bazaar, participatory delights and distractions, and a madhouse slapdashery of costumery by all the attendees. Costumed attire is highly encouraged -- all in attendance are invited to return to a time of gentility by creating characters for the occasion. Friday is the Edwardian World's Faire, which runs from 8pm to 2am. Tickets $28.00 to $75.00. Saturday is the Edwardian Ball, which runs from 8pm. to 2am. Tickets are $38.00 to $85.00. Advance tickets available at edwardianball.com. All ages.

  • Sunday, January 23: Barbary Coast Burlesque at the Impala Restaurant and Lounge in San Francisco, 501 Broadway Street (map). Join the popular seductive cast of Barbary Coast Burlesque at San Francisco's popular hot spot, Impala. It will be an evening of provocative burlesque entertainment right on The City's own Barbary Coast! This event will take place at Impala's main stage. Dinner, drinks, and live burlesque entertainment! What more can you ask? Doors at 8pm, show at 9. $10 in advance at bunnypistol.eventbrite.com, $15 at the door. 21+.

  • Monday, January 24: Uptown Hubba Hubba at the Uptown Club in Oakland, 1928 Telegraph Avenue (map). Hubba Hubba Revue returns to the Uptown Club with outta-towner guests, local faves, and none other than the one & only Stripping Granny! With performances by Lady X, Ms. Luisa of Minnesota, Bunny Von Tail, Lizzy D. Vine of Sacramento, and Dulce de Lecherous! Plus bellydance troupe Tears of Erzulie! Doors at 9pm, show at 10:15. $5, 21+.
