The Scarlet Ladders at Red Hots Burlesque this Friday, February 25

The Scarlet Ladders will be making their Red Hots Burlesque debut this Friday at El Rio, which is located at 3158 Mission Street in San Francisco (map). They are a San Francisco-based cabaret/burlesque duo who perform on elevated stages (ladders).

In the next few months, they'll be performing at various shows around the area, including the Hubba Hubba Revue at the Uptown in Oakland, Curvicious at the Blue Macaw in San Francisco, and another Red Hots show in March. For more information about this group, please visit thescarletladders.com.

Also making her debut at RHB this week will be Babraham Lincoln of Sin Sisters Burlesque! You'll not want to wait four score and seven years to see this beauty!

Lucille Highball
will be visiting from Los Angeles, and Miss Mae Western will be taking a break for a few months, so this will be one of the last chances for you to see her perform. She'll also be performing this Sunday evening at The Polk Street Lounge Burlesque & Comedy Show at the Hemlock Tavern in San Francisco. See the SFBR calendar for details.

And the Stripping Granny will be a special guest! Lastly, Dottie Lux herself will be performing, so it promises to be a very good show with lots of intriguing performers.

Come celebrate the happiest hour in the Bay with Red Hots Burlesque, THE BEST in BUMP and GRIND! This week we will be welcoming 2 RHB debuts, 1 visiting performer and a few RHB favs including Miss Mae Western, who will be leaving the country for several months, so this is your last chance (for a while) to toss one back with everyone's favorite sassy sister.

Performances by: Lucille Highball, Babraham Lincoln, Miss Mae Western, The Scarlet Ladders, and Dottie Lux. With special guest the Stripping Granny!

About our debut performers:
Steps Above Cabaret! An answer to the desire for close-up entertainment in venues without a stage, The Scarlet Ladders were formed with the intent to perform in areas among and within the audience. The performers, mounted on elevated 'stages,' maximize the audience's sight-line without disruption. The spectators remain comfortably standing, seated or otherwise grouped, giving them the opportunity to relax and enjoy the show which might happen to be right next to them.

At least twice as hot as Mary Todd, Babraham Lincoln is a member of Sin Sisters Burlesque from Santa Cruz. She has recently performed at Uptown Hubba Hubba and First Friday Follies in Oakland. Babe has a taste for fine whiskey and tap dancing.

San Francisco Bay Area burlesque for February 24 - March 2, 2011

With this weekly round-up of burlesque shows, the SFBR has reached its 1000th post!

After almost three years, it's pretty amazing to see how much burlesque has grown in the San Francisco Bay Area. Just looking at the calendar, there are many more shows than there used to be. Some shows are no longer with us, but many are. The Hubba Hubba Revue, Red Hots Burlesque, Little Minsky's, Barbary Coast Burlesque and others continue on, and there are new shows that have found their niches such as Séduction Féroce, sASSy's Seaside Burlesque, among others. And there will be some brand-new shows such as Curvicious Cabaret, which will be making its debut on Thursday, March 10, at the Blue Macaw in San Francisco.

And the schools of burlesque seem to be doing well. Bombshell Betty, Red Hots Burlesque School of Shimmy, and the Hot Pink Feathers Showgirl Academy have classes full of students and are producing the performers of tomorrow! If you've ever wanted to learn burlesque, now is as good a time as any! Just click and see which of the schools are offering classes which suit your needs and wants. They'd be happy to have you as a student!

There's lots of exciting things happening in San Francisco Bay Area burlesque. We're fortunate to live in an area with lots of creative, talented, and hard-working people who devote themselves to bringing us live entertainment. We just need to do our part to make sure these entertainment options continue to be available to us by going out and seeing the shows and by by placing some bills in the tip jars and the online fundraising sites (i.e., www.indiegogo.com/hubba-hubba-revue).

Most of all, bring your friends out to the shows and classes with you and have a good time! See you out there!

Red Hots Burlsque show for Friday, February 18, plus RHB news!

Red Hots Burlesque has some big news! They already are San Francisco's only weekly burlesque show every Friday (The Hubba Hubba Revue has Oakland's every Monday night), but RHB will be expanding to two days a week! This will happen in May, so the details are still scarce, but it appears the Wednesday show will also be at El Rio in San Francisco. Dottie Lux has also announced that their Go DEEP shows were very successful and will be happening monthly, with the next one on April 7 with lube wrestling! Once again, details will be announced soon.

In the meantime, this Friday's show information is below. Looks like a great show with visiting performers and a return to the stage by Milkshake!

Come celebrate the happiest hour in the Bay with Red Hots Burlesque, THE BEST in BUMP and GRIND! This week we will be celebrating the birth of RHB favorite and current Butt Card, MONIFA! We also have 3 debut performances! Please welcome: Dixie DeLish, Brently Heilbron (Austin) and Judy Luck (Los Angeles)!

About our debut & visiting performers:
"Sweet, Sassy, and Classy," is how Los Angeles based performer Judy Luck is described by all who have crossed her path. This 23 year old girl next door may be young but don't let that fool you, she's been performing burlesque since age 17.... Before most clubs would even allow her entry! She began her career with International boylesque performer Bobbie Burlesque and Miss LuLu Lunaris in a magical trio. Soon after was on her own, craving all that is the world of Burlesque. Her acts are as all- embracing as her personality. Her smile alone will brighten up your day, so get ready to enjoy the luck coming your way! ....

From Brently:
I'm mainly promoting Http://DailyUke.com where i post an original song a day. Every day of the year. Other highlights are working with Woody Allen & Daniel Johnston and Paul McCartney and appearing on this season of Friday Night Lights
You cant spell Vaudeville Heartthrob without Devil Heart.

San Francisco Bay Area burlesque for February 17-23, 2011

Looking over the shows for the upcoming week, it seems that there's a bit of a love hangover.

From "Love Stinks" with Naked Girls Reading, to Burlesque Moulin's "Amour, the Many Faces of Love," to a Debauchery Valentine's celebration, love is still in the air, no matter what it smells like! So if you still don't want to let the holiday go, there's still some opportunities to extend the season. In addition to buying all that clearance candy, of course!

But there's also shows that don't have that theme. So there's a good variety to be had this week. And if you're an artist, Dr. Sketchy's SF will be featuring the Bay Area Derby Girls. Always fun subjects to draw!

Have fun!

  • Thursday, February 17: Naked Girls Reading: San Francisco presents "LOVE STINKS" at Viracocha in San Francisco, 998 Valencia Street (map). All Naked Girls Reading chapters will have the theme: LOVE STINKS for their February events. Love isn't just about a box of chocolates, roses and sunshine. Thorns and emotional thunderstorms come with it too. This month's cast will include Carol Queen PhD, Lady Monster, and Ophelia Coeur de Noir! With special guests Will "the Thrill" Viharo and Monica "Tiki Goddess" Cortes-Viharo, who will be reading from Will's books, "A Mermaid Drowns in the Midnight Lounge" and "Lavender Blonde." Doors at 8pm, show at 8:30. $15 general admission, $20 front row seats. Advance discounted tickets available at ngrsf.eventbrite.com. 18+.

  • Friday, February 18: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco, 3158 Mission Street (map). San Francisco's only weekly burlesque show is back! This week, the show will feature birthday girl Monifa, and RHB debut performances from Dixie DeLish, Brently Heilbron (Austin) and Judy Luck (Los Angeles)! With even more performances by Dottie Lux, Milkshake, and Nicki Sparxx! 7:30pm. $5-$10 sliding scale. 21+.

  • Saturday, February 19: Burlesque Moulin presents "Amour: The Many Faces of Love" at the Shattuck Down Low in Berkeley, 2284 Shattuck Avenue (map). Along with the cast, explore the many facets and meanings of love. Your Mistress of Ceremonies will be Alotta Boutté, and the performers will include Casey Castille (Chanteuse), Monique (Chanteuse), Dottie Lux, Miss Balla Fire, Hernan Cortez (Magician), Delilah, Bunny Pistol, Lady Monster (Spoken Word Artiste), Madame Chartreuse, and Ophelia Coeur de Noir! With the DJ stylings of Monsieur Keylo Valenzuela, and House Mistress Extraordinaire, Bitter Waitress. Food by Chef Anna Rose (serving up tasty French treats!) Doors at 7:30pm, show at 8:30. Tickets $7 for Cal students, $12 general admission, $20 (GA plus a glass of champagne), $50 table for two plus a bottle of champagne, $160 booth for six plus two bottles of champagne. 21+. After party with DJ El Diablo to follow, free before 11pm.

  • Also Saturday: Original Sin Burlesque at Sanctuary Ultra Lounge in Livermore, 2369 First Street (map). Join OSB at Sanctuary Ultra Lounge for one of many third-Saturday burlesque shows! Enjoy great drinks and tapas...and of course, the gals of Original Sin Burlesque! 10pm. $5. 21+.

  • Sunday, February 20: Debauchery at the White Horse Inn in Oakland, 6555 Telegraph Avenue (map). Come celebrate Valentine's Debauchery style. Debauchery this month is benefiting SF girls of Leather and there's fabulous prizes and the evening will be hosted by Alotta Boutté! With performances by Ava Lanche, Mister Bean, Damien, Saranaqued, Kitty Von Quim, Sassy, Lola Sunshine, Patricia Misery and more! Doors at 7pm, show at 8. $5 to $15, sliding scale. 21+.

  • Monday, February 21: Uptown Hubba Hubba at the Uptown Club in Oakland, 1928 Telegraph Avenue (map). The Burlesqueteers have another sexy and silly Monday just for you! There's an ostrich mating dance, a praying mantis femme-fatale, an orgy scene, "The Mating Game" (like the Dating Game but for animals), love magic, sex(y) on the beach, seduction, rejection, infidelity and True Love (not necessarily in that order)! With performances by Bombshell Betty, Vadge O'Fonor, Lezzie McFaggerson, Pearl E. Gates, Dangerous Delilah, Pickles Kintaro, Red Velvet, If-N-Whendy, Cherry Chapstick, Red Delicious, Cinnamon Stick, Mint Julep, Summer Fling, Violet Streak, Kinky D'Orleans, Nirvanah Bliss, Carlita Cupcake, Pyro Pantera, Sindee Rose, Velvet Vixen, Baby Blue Boom Boom, Andi Stardust, Cosette L'Amour, plus Burlesqueteers so new, they don't have stage names yet! With special guests, Will Longfellow, Man Prop and Undead Prop! Live musical accompaniment by San Francisco's cheesiest band, Fromagique, with guest singer, A Lethal Weapon. The evening will be hosted by Randy Johnson and Patina de Copper! Doors 9:00pm, show 10:15. $5. 21+.

  • Tuesday, February 22: Dr. Sketchy's SF presents Bay Area Derby Girls at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco, 111 Minna Street (map). Girls will also be wearing What Katie Did Lingerie as they pose for you! 7pm to 10pm. $10 general admission, $7 students/teachers. 21+.

As always, for more information, please check the calendar above. Also, you may want to check back during the week to see if there are any late additions on the blog. And if you have a burlesque show or information about a show that you would like to add to the calendar, please email me at sfbr AT gmx DOT com.

Hubba Hubba Revue "Be the BRA" Fundraiser

Not only is the Hubba Hubba Revue helping others to raise funds, but they're also raising funds for themselves!

Yes, you can help support the Hubba Hubba Revue to evolve into their next incarnation. They're hoping to raise $5,000, and you can help by donating online at www.indiegogo.com/hubba-hubba-revue.

Hubba Hubba Revue is calling on all of you to be the BRA! Hubba Hubba Revue needs your support.

Maintaining both a monthly and weekly burlesque and variety show takes funding. A lot of funding! For 4 years, we've relied on the craftiness of our cast, crew and go-go dancers to create a large-scale, themed production that is completely different each month! But all of those pasties, props and costumes are expensive! Just like any community theatre company, we need to do a little annual fundraising in order to keep the roof over our heads and the clothes on our performers (at least until they are supposed to take them off!)

So now we are looking for you to be the bra and support Hubba Hubba Revue!

Go to www.indiegogo.com/hubba-hubba-revue and donate today!

We will be running our fundraiser from February 1st until April 30th. For as little as $10 you can be the bra!

SO BE THE BRA AND DONATE TODAY at www.indiegogo.com/hubba-hubba-revue

Valentine's Day at the Uptown Club

And because the Hubba Hubba Revue has a Valentine's Day show, it'll be a great opportunity to have a nice dinner at one of the restaurants near the Uptown Club before the show! It starts at 10:15 p.m., so you'll have an opportunity for a nice, casual, yet romantic meal.

Surprise your sweetie with a unique dinner and a show that will include such Hubba Hubba favorites as Sparkly Devil and Casey Castille! See what all the fuss is about this Monday night at the Uptown, which is located at 1928 Telegraph Avenue (map) in Oakland.

Please join our first time host, Miss Honey Penny as we present "This Bud's for You" and we don't mean the beer! Red Hots Burlesque is still the hottest happy hour in town and this time it gets even happier as we celebrate the sticky stuff with AJ Molecular, Anita Cookie (NYC), Juicy D Light, Honey Lawless & NYC's Gigi & Pop!

About our debut & visiting performers:

Gigi & Pop are a music and variety trio from New York City that won the "Best Variety" trophy at the Burlesque Hall of Fame (Exotic World) in Las Vegas in 2009. Info, mp3s, video, photos and more can be found at www.gigiandpop.com.

Anita Cookie is the charmingly inebriated burlesque star whose sparkling singing voice, dynamite shimmy and intoxicated wit have been called everything from "hilarious" (NYTheater.com) to "sizzling hot" (Go Magazine). Originally hailing from the tan line-free shores of the Pacific, she took the stages of New York by storm and can be seen every night knocking audiences out of their chairs around the city, and across the continent from Key West to Toronto. A Golden Pastie Award winner at the New York Burlesque Festival, Anita is also one-third of the quirky music trio Gigi & Pop, winners of the first-ever "Best Variety Act" trophy at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Pageant 2009 in Las Vegas. As a producer, she's created boozier, more naked versions of classic game shows and talk shows, and with her partners in Casino-O'Fortune Cookie Productions she produces an ongoing series of sold-out shows at the famous Joe's Pub. Also, this spring Anita Cookie is back on the road with her traveling group, "Dangerous Curves Ahead: Burlesque On The Go-Go" for their premier west-coast tour!

San Francisco Bay Area burlesque for February 10-16, 2011

This is a special Valentine's Day edition of the weekly show round-up! It's been adjusted back by a day thanks to the flu continuing to make the rounds of the SFBR editorial offices, but we'll see how this new schedule works out.

There are lots of shows with a Valentine's theme happening this week. Barbary Coast Burlesque, Le Boy, and the Hubba Hubba Revue all have love-themed shows happening. There are also classes from Kristina Nekyia (previous post) and the Red Hots Burlesque School of Shimmy (previous post) that are timed to provide excellent opportunities to learn about sensual movement, with or without a partner. Little Minsky's Burlesque and Variety Show this Thursday, February 10

Little Minsky's - Gigi & Pop (NY) and Birthday of the Bunny

Ladies and gents, let's have a rousing Minsky's welcome for special guest musical trio Gigi & Pop from New York as they swing by on their west coast tour to bring some extra mischief and merriment to our next night of lovely ladies and cabaret confections. They're charming, they're comical, cleverly-costumed and long-time darlings of the New York burlesque scene. Winners of Best Variety Act at the 2009 Burlesque Hall of Fame Pag...eant, Gigi & Pop are the magnetic Mr. Momotaro on ukulele, the inimitable Ken Zwerin on upright bass and saucy beauty Anita Cookie on vocals and various melodic devices. With a bit of vaudeville, retro kitsch cool and loungey swank they're an upbeat, tongue-in-cheek, toe-tappin' good time.

And we'll be celebrating with copious cocktails the auspicious birthday of our dear friend and MC for the evening - the one and only Scotty the Blue Bunny. Yes indeed, blue bunnies just get better with age, so let's raise a toast to one of the most dynamic and enigmatic characters to grace the stage in platform Lucite heels. As for the dancing girls, we have the delightfully devastating cross-over belly dance burlesque trio Sister Kate, the alluring Honey Lawless, smoking hot Miss Balla Fire, the fetching Ophelia Coeur de Noir, senductive Miss Mae Western, radiant Dottie Lux and intoxicating Mai Tai. And there's more music from gorgeous drag vocalist Honey Mahogany, accompanied by the fantastic Joe Wicht on piano.

Buy the Bunny a drink, enjoy the show and we'll see you at the bar...

And if you'd like to catch Gigi & Pop's other San Francisco appearances, they'll be doing some tunes at Dottie Lux's Red Hots Burlesque on Friday, February 11th at the El Rio and a full set of their own at The Rite Spot Cafe on Saturday, February 12th.
