San Francisco Bay Area burlesque for February 24 - March 2, 2011

With this weekly round-up of burlesque shows, the SFBR has reached its 1000th post!

After almost three years, it's pretty amazing to see how much burlesque has grown in the San Francisco Bay Area. Just looking at the calendar, there are many more shows than there used to be. Some shows are no longer with us, but many are. The Hubba Hubba Revue, Red Hots Burlesque, Little Minsky's, Barbary Coast Burlesque and others continue on, and there are new shows that have found their niches such as Séduction Féroce, sASSy's Seaside Burlesque, among others. And there will be some brand-new shows such as Curvicious Cabaret, which will be making its debut on Thursday, March 10, at the Blue Macaw in San Francisco.

And the schools of burlesque seem to be doing well. Bombshell Betty, Red Hots Burlesque School of Shimmy, and the Hot Pink Feathers Showgirl Academy have classes full of students and are producing the performers of tomorrow! If you've ever wanted to learn burlesque, now is as good a time as any! Just click and see which of the schools are offering classes which suit your needs and wants. They'd be happy to have you as a student!

There's lots of exciting things happening in San Francisco Bay Area burlesque. We're fortunate to live in an area with lots of creative, talented, and hard-working people who devote themselves to bringing us live entertainment. We just need to do our part to make sure these entertainment options continue to be available to us by going out and seeing the shows and by by placing some bills in the tip jars and the online fundraising sites (i.e., www.indiegogo.com/hubba-hubba-revue).

• Friday, February 25: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco, 3158 Mission Street (map). This week, Dottie Lux brings you some RHB favorites, as well as a few new performers on the El Rio stage. Performances by Lucille Highball (Los Angeles), Babraham Lincoln (RHB debut), Miss Mae Western, The Scarlet Ladders (RHB debut), and Dottie Lux. With special guest the Stripping Granny! 7:30pm. $5-$10 sliding scale. 21+.


• Also Friday: Hubba Hubba Revue's Around the World in 80 Girls at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco, 375 11th Street (map). Experience burlesque from around the globe as your hosts Kingfish and Eddie bring you the best the world has to offer! Featuring performances by Pookie Patootie (New York City), Blackie Deuce, (New York City), aerialist Sasha Harrington, Mynx d'Meanor, Comrade Tang, Monifa, Ava Lanche, Sparkly Devil, Lady Satan, McPuzo & Trotsky, Jellyfish Kiss, Bitter Waitress, Sugar Main, Miss Balla Fire, Bunny Pistol, Honey Lawless. and Last Night's Fling! With The Hubba Hubba Go-Go Adventuresses! And special guests the Hot Pink Feathers and their All-Star Marching Band! With guest DJ Chango B! Doors at 9pm, show at 10. $15 general, $12 advance at dnalounge.com, $10 between 9:00 and 9:30 at the box office. 21+.


• Also Friday: Baxtalo Drom - The Lucky Road at Amnesia in San Francisco, 853 Valencia Street (map). A wild wind is stirring, and something wicked, wacky and wunderbar this way comes to Baxtalo Drom! With musical acts the Sansa and Shiri Show and Lady Viola and Ragwater Revue! Plus belly dancer Gina Bruno! DJ Fact .50 will provide the beats, and PI Clowns will provide short clown vignette storytelling. Doors 9pm, show at 10. $5 before 9:30, $10 after. 21+.
  


• Saturday, February 26: Dr. Sketchy's SF presents Vivian De Milo at Utrecht Art Supplies in San Francisco, 1930 Van Ness Avenue (map). Draw Vivian De Milo at Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School. You may purchase entry to the event with a Dr. Sketchy’s Approved Supply Kit for $25. The supply kit includes a Yarka 12 pen watercolor set, a 5" x 8" Strathmore Mixed Media Visual Journal, medium Niji Waterbrush, and a Black 05 Pigma Micron ($20 value). • Sunday, February 27: The Polk Street Lounge Burlesque & Comedy Show at the Hemlock Tavern in San Francisco, 1131 Polk Street (map). A wonderful variety of performers will grace the stage with their talents for teasing, shimmying and serving up a super hilarious night tailored just for you! The comedians will include Alex Koll, Janine Brito, Sean Keane, Brendan Lynch, and Sammy Obeid! Burlesque performances by Isabella Minx, Delilah, Three Sisters Belly Dance, and Mae Western (her last performance in SF for a few months)! 9pm. $6. 21+.


• Monday, February 28: Uptown Hubba Hubba at the Uptown Club in Oakland, 1928 Telegraph Avenue (map). The Hot Pink Feathers Showgirl Academy returns to Uptown Hubba Hubba with their second graduating class of the Crafting The Solo series! It'll be a full show of brand-new sexy performances by Sashay LaRue, La Pequeña, Jezebel Whispers, Ginger Skyye, Milkshake, Red Velvet, La Bamboo Vixen, Lolly Gagger, and Kellita with Bobby Bryce & Bryce Charles (of the Bohemian Brethren)! The show will be hosted by hosted by Kingfish & Zip the What-Is-It?! Doors 9:00pm, show 10:15. $5. 21+.
