Burlesque n' Brass this Saturday, Hot Pink Feathers documentary planned

Besides having their monthly show at Cafe Van Kleef in Oakland (1621 Telegraph Avenue , map) for the first time in a few months this Saturday, February 5, the Hot Pink Feathers have exciting news! They are collaborating with a local filmmaker, Charlie Colon, on a documentary, "Light as a Feather."

They're having a fundraiser to help to complete the project. You can find out the film, the levels of giving, and you may become a prject backer at Kickstarter.com. I'm sure the Feathers will mention it at their show on Saturday.

They're also looking for volunteers at their shows, and for a graphic artist. All of the information is located below in an excerpt from their newsletter.

If you'd like your very own subscription to this free HPF newsletter, you may sign up at their calendar page at hotpinkfeathers.com/calendar.html!

1. Light as a Feather

We are proud to share news with you about “Light as a Feather,” a new collaborative documentary film project between local filmmaker Charlie Colon and Hot Pink Feathers. Light as a Feather tells the behind the scenes story of Hot Pink Feathers preparing for Carnaval, and chronicles the lives of several women as they prepare to unleash their inner showgirls in public – many for the first time. Along the way, the viewer witnesses the humor, glee, uncertainties, poignancy, verve and transcendence that the journey to the big day evokes. We aim to capture the intimate stories of these women as they engage with themselves, the different facets of their lives, and their peers, on this potentially life-changing experience.

We have kicked off a fundraising campaign to help with production costs associated with Light as a Feather. A portion of the funds gathered will go towards clothing cast members (ie costumes! Yay!).

Click here to get a sneak peek at our project and learn more about how to support our work.

We have 2 weeks to meet our fundraising goal! So please act now, and help us meet our goal. We can’t stress enough how every little bit helps. Please give whatever you can! And please feel free to forward to your communities and friends.

MORE ABOUT BURLESQUE N BRASS:
Dubbed "the coolest jazz brass band in Northern California" by the San Francisco Chronicle, Oakland-based Blue Bone Express exposes the Bay Area to a type of jazz rarely heard beyond the Mississippi Delta. Combined with award-winning Hot Pink Feathers’ World Carnaval Cabaret dance, this explosive cabaret performance fuses music and dance traditions spanning the early-1900's New Orleans parades to the showgirl plumage of 1950's Rio de Janeiro Carnaval, the culture-clash hilarity of the '70s and '80s, and pushing through the present-day post-modern meltdown that is downtown Oakland.

“If you've never had the pleasure of seeing burlesque dancing performed to live jazz, then this is the place to start. It's like slugging down a pint of Uncle Peppy's moonshine after ten years of Nestea. It's sexy, spunky, sassy retro fun with all the heart and soul of Rio de Janeiro and the French Quarter, right there in downtown Oaktown. If you're looking for the perfect date, the perfect diversion, or just a chance to see an eminently sexy group of gifted hoofers grinding to hot jazz played by true enthusiasts, order a whiskey sour and settle into your seat for one of the best evenings the Bay Area has to offer.” --Thomas Roche
