San Francisco Bay Area burlesque for May 5 - May 11, 2011

Once again, there are some very cool burlesque happenings going on this week in the Bay Area!

This evening, "On Tour" (Tournee) has been chosen to close the San Francisco International Film Festival at the Castro Theatre. This French film stars our very own Kitten on the Keys and Roky Roulette, along with Mimi Le Meaux, Dirty Martini, Julie Atlas Muz, and Evie Lovelle. It was a celebrated film in France, where it competed for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival last year and was nominated for seven César Awards. I had heard that the film woudn't be released in the U.S., so this may be one of the few chances we have of seeing it! Plus there will be an after party featuring performances by Kitten on the Keys, Roky Roulette, Mimi Le Meaux and Evie Lovelle at at the Factory, 525 Harrison Street. Tickets are a tad spendy at $30 for just the movie, but it's less than a plane ticket to see it in another country!

Also happening this Friday will be the 10th birthday of the Hot Pink Feathers at the DNA Lounge! If you're a fan, you won't want to miss this show, as the show will feature not only the Feathers and Blue Bone Express, but also Kingfish of the Hubba Hubba Revue, the Devil-Ettes, Gorilla X, and more!

First Friday Follies will have a "Seis de Mayo" show at the Stork Club in Oakland, and Risk-A Cabaret will help prepare us for "Thee End Times" at the Aubergine After Dark in Sebastopol. Both of these shows will also be happening on Friday evening.

Next Tuesday evening, Bombshell Betty and Fromagique will be presenting a Burlesqueteer Prom at the Elbo Room in San Francisco. I bet we all wish our proms could be like that one!

Please feel free to read through the shows and see which ones interest you. Now that the weather is nice, it's time to head out and see some shows! Enjoy! :-)

San Francisco area burlesque for December 1 to December 7, 2010

This week marks the start of the holiday season-themed burlesque shows. Yowza!

Bunny Pistol kicks things off with her Holiday Party at the Hemlock Tavern in San Francisco on Wednesday. There will be a party starting at 8:30 p.m. with music, door presents, and food and drink. Though you may have to bring your own mistletoe! And of course, there will be burlesque performances starting at 9:30. The cover will be a $6 donation at the door.

One of the quirks of this week's schedule is that there will be four different shows on Friday night in four different areas of the Bay Area! You may not be able to make all four shows, so you'll have to pick one or two to see.

The first show is the weekly Red Hots Burlesque show at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District. This week, Living Legend of Burlesque Isis Starr is the host, and there will be visiting performers from Los Angeles. The show starts at 7:30 p.m., and cover is on a sliding scale from $5.00 to $10.00, so you pay what you can.

Next, sASSy's Seaside Burlesque will be happening on the coast in Pacifica at Winters Tavern. The doors open at 8:00 p.m., but the show starts at 9:00. This month, the Hubba Hubba Revue's Kingfish will be host, and the performers will include Honey Lawless, Miss Mae Western, Bunny Pistol, Miss Honey Penny, and more!

Over in Oakland at the Stork Club, Juicy D. Light is taking over the reins of First Friday Follies, and their first show is F#%k the Holidays! Your hostess will be the same Juicy D. Light, and the show will have performances by Revolva of Portland, Lizzy D. Vine of Sacramento, Rubenesque Burlesque, The Stripping Granny, and more! The doors are at 9pm, and the free show starts at 9:30.

Up in Sebastopol at Aubergine After Dark, Risk-A Cabaret is saying goodbye, at least for a little while. They're intimating that they'll be going on the road, so they're last show will be a Sendoff Party! Oleeander Moon will be hosting a show that will feature Nicki Sparxx, Miss Queen B, Rose Harden, Honeysuckle Moses, and others. There will be fire performances, too! It all begins at 8pm, and it's just $10.00 ($5.00 if you dress as a vagabond). Come and say bon voyage to the North Bay's only burlesque show!

On Saturday, join the Hot Pink Feathers and Blue Bone Express at Cafe Van Kleef in Oakland for their monthly show, Burlesque n' Brass. This month, there will be 16 showgirls in that intimate venue, and they'll be premiering their new act, "Santa Does the Mambo!" The doors open at 8:30pm, and the show starts at 9:30. Cover is $10.00.

Last, but not least, The Mischievous Maidens make an appearance at the Hubba Hubba Revue show at the Uptown Nightclub on Monday night. Bubble Yum and Kitty Coquette will also perform some solo numbers. I'm suspecting that the acts will have a holiday theme! The Maidens willl be joined by Shadow Circus Creature Theater, SF Boylesque and MJ Paul's Go-Go Girlies! And there will be more performers, too. Lots of show for just a fiver! Doors will be open at 9:00 p.m., and the show will being at around 10:15.

So there you have it, the week in SF burlesque for the first week of December 2010. Happy holidays, everyone! :-)

  • Wednesday, December 1: Bunny Pistol's Holiday Party at the Hemlock Tavern in San Francisco, 1131 Polk Street (map). Join Bunny Pistol as she kicks off the holiday season. What better way to say I love you than with a big party?!? There will be door presents, food, drinks, and music! And of course, burlesque! Get there early to get your present! All proceeds go to the performers. Cocktails and seating at 8:30pm, burlesque at 9:30. $6 donation at the door. 21+.

  • Friday, December 3: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco, 3158 Mission Street (map). Join Dottie Lux and host Living Legend of Burlesque Isis Starr as they welcome Lucille Highball and Scarlet O'gasm from LA! Also performing will be Sheba Queen of the Night and Dawn Devine. Show at 7:30pm. $5-10, sliding scale. 21+.

  • Also Friday: sASSy's Seaside Burlesque - Holiday Edition at Winters Tavern in Pacifica, 1522 Francisco Boulevard (map). Risk-A Cabaret presents Day of the Dead-ly Halloween Hangover on Friday, November 5

Burlesque in the North Bay? You betcha! And if you've eaten too much candy over the past week, it's time for you to get out and get dancing!

This Saturday, Sebastopol's Aubergine After Dark will be hosting the monthly Risk-A Cabaret, and this month's show will celebrate the Day of the Dead. If you go to the show in costume, cover is only $5 instead of the usual $10!

Among the performers will be Living Legend of Burlesque, Isis Starr! Plus Dottie Lux will be making the trip north after her Red Hots Burlesque show at San Francisco's El Rio earlier in the evening (see previous post). The Bay Area's premier male belly dancer, Paige Lawrence, will perform, as will the Diamond Daggers and Joweh. And Max Ashley will play with fire for your entertainment!

Brothers Horse will provide the gypsy-punk music that will get your body moving, and JD Limelight will be breaking out of the band for a bit and performing solo at Aubergine at 4:00 p.m.

If you'd like to read more about Risk-A Cabaret, see The Bohemian article written by Aimee Drew! There's a bit about burlesque shows in general, some information about Paige Lawrence, and quite a bit about Risk-A Cabaret's Jodi Waseca, who will also be hosting the show as Oleeander Moon!

Risk-A Cabaret presents Day of the Dead-ly Halloween Hangover!

It's that time of year again...the nights are longer, the air is crisper, the veil between this world and the next is thinner...so you know what that means...

It's time to revel in the season, warm up and get loose with the only monthly burlesque show in Sonoma County!

On Friday, November 5 at Aubergine After Dark in Sebastopol, Ca, Risk-A Cabaret proudly presents
...DAY OF THE DEAD-LY HALLOWEEN HANGOVER!!!

Featuring...

the on fire Vulgarian circus rock and roll band of the century
BROTHERS HORSE!!

"They led me to a chair and tied me up. They draped one pair of panties on my head. Then two. Then three. Blindfolded. An apple, shoved into my mouth. My chair, tilted on its back legs. A drum roll. What in the world is happening?
When the blindfold came off, a guy in sequined hot pants pulled the apple from my mouth. It was perfectly pierced by a sharp, wooden arrow. A go-go dancer named Svetlana commemorated the occasion by firing sparks into the air.
...Brothers Horse—well, let's just say it'll take the better part of a month before the brains affected by their unbridled mayhem will be able to think normally once again." -Gabe Meline

gender bending delicious dancing divas
DIAMOND DAGGERS!!

These 20th century foxes, a coterie of queer women that ranges from 3-15 people, will take you on a carnival ride with captivating stops in all decades of the 20th century.
Amelia Mae Paradise is an original founder/director/choreographer and general little-engine-that-could of Diamond Daggers. You may have seen her on any number of stages in the Bay Area in the past 7 years, including The Great American Music Hall, Bimbo's, The Place of Fine Arts, 12 Galaxies, The Victoria Theater, SomArts, ODC, Great America, and Dance Mission. Or maybe you saw her on a random street breaking into a fully choreographed Fosse inspired improvisation when the moment was right and the pavement just moist. She is renowned for her own irreverent brainchild, Breakfast Burlesque, especially popular is the Bacon Garter Belt and Cinnamon Bun Pasties. With a degree in Flamenco, this sultry New Mexico native knows how to dance with unbridled fiery passion and technique alike. She has produced and appeared in events for The National Center for Lesbian Rights, The National Queer Arts Festival, CounterPULSE, and Jon Sims Center for the Arts. She is featured in the forthcoming Bearded Lady Book.

burlesque superstar and legend
ISIS STARR!!

Isis began studying Ballet at 7 and at the tender age of 12 decided to be a Burlesque Queen after seeing the movie Gypsy. She perfected her bumps and grinds and took them to Ballet class where they were not appreciated. Nine years later she was working at the Pondor Club in North Beach, San Francisco. Realizing she was born too late to be a true Burlesque Queen, she started stripping from a Burlesque perspective. Since then she has been around the workd twice on a g-string and is now a Living legend and the Goddess of Burlesque.
On stage she is the personification of olde world elegance. She has performed on every continent of the world, excluding the North and South Poles, because she doesn't want to freeze her tits off. Isis has performed at the Crazy Horse in Paris, Beirut and Australia. She also did 3 months at the Moulin Rouge in Paris. She has worked the Windmill Theater in London and Paul Raymond Revue Bar, as well as the Olde Latin Quarter. She redefines the Art of Burlesque, with Style and Grace, Form and Face. Her performances are an outpouring of feminine power and sensuality. Burlesque is the Art and "I Am both the Artiste' and the Dance."

the Bay Area's premiere male belly dancer
PAIGE LAWRENCE!!

Perhaps you've seen him on stages all over the greater bay area. Maybe you've not seen him at shows because he's in the wings making everything run smoothly. Or perhaps you caught a glimpse of him at our first show this year in May...but you definitely want more! And we here at Risk-A Cabaret are happy to oblige.

Dottie Lux performs this Friday, October 1, at Red Hots Burlesque and Risk-A Cabaret

This Friday night, catch Dottie Lux as she performs at two shows in the San Francisco Bay Area: Her very own Red Hots Burlesque at San Francisco's El Rio and Risk-A Cabaret at Sebastopol's Aubergine After Dark.

Who is Dottie Lux? Dottie has been performing burlesque since 2001, where she started performing in New York City. Did you know that she was the very first Dr. Sketchy's model? She's also been featured in many magazines such as SF Weekly, GO Magazine, and others. She's performed on stages across the country, including at Tease-O-Rama and the New York Burlesque Festival.

She started Red Hots Burlesque soon after she started performing, and in 2008 Dottie brought Red Hots Burlesque to San Francisco where there's a show every Friday at El Rio. In fact, it's the only weekly burlesque show in the city of San Francisco! She also operates and teaches at the Red Hots Burlesque School of Shimmy. THE PATIO MIDWAY

KRANK-BOOM-CLANK — Kinetic Conveyances of Whimsy
Krank-Boom-Clank (K-B-C) is a kinetic industrial arts collective located in Santa Rosa, CA, consisting of:
• David Farish • Skye Barnett • Clifford Hill
They build “kinetic conveyances of whimsy” and other mutant ride-able sculptures of bemusement and delight (a.k.a.“Freak-Bikes”).
“Hennepin Crawler”
The “Hennepin Crawler” was recently completed in time for Burning Man 2008 and The Great Handcar Regatta 2008 ( handcarregatta.
com ). The Crawler is comprised largely of discarded lawn furniture, VW Bug parts, and old bikes among other bits too numerous to
mention. It represents a desire to meld alternative transportation innovation, human-powered kinetic sculpture, recycling of
disparate pieces of functional garbage, and the prankster's notion of absurdity and bewilderment on an unsuspecting public.
Todd Barricklow's "Two Penny" contraption will also be on display!

THE TRAVELING WONDERS OF THE BOILER BAR
In a project that would make Franz Kafka grin, a 40-year-old bug has metamorphosed into a snail. The resulting creation, an art car called The Golden Mean, is a golden gastropod that glows in the dark and shoots rings of fire from its feelers. It also seats six comfortably. Blacksmith Jon Sarriugarte, who fabricates custom home furnishings, worked with his wife, Kyrsten Mate, to transform a 1966 VW Bug into the rolling piece of art.
Also look out for other amazing inventions on display from this multi talented blacksmith!

If you fall in love with something - don't wait too long! I will only make each design in limited runs.

AND ON THE INSIDE MAIN STAGE......

SHOVELMAN
He plays a shovel!!
"Shovelman's music would be playing on the radio if Tom Waits and Les Claypool ever went on a road trip together ......and were lost." - Chip, 'So Wat TV
"The results are in and the decision is final. If ever I'm looking for a lead shovel, or if anyone is for that matter, Shovelman is the first and only logical choice." -Klaus Flouride, The Dead Kennedys
"Bottom line, oddity or not, Shovelman is just the kind of off-kilter kick in the pants modern music might need to keep things interesting. Who knows? Maybe he’ll inspire some of us to put down our high tech gadgetry and start looking at low-tech objects with a new sense of purpose." - Melissa Tan, The Rumpus.net
