First Friday Follies and Sugar Shack for Friday, May 1, 2009

It's the first Friday of the month, so that means it's time for First Friday Follies! As always, it's at the Stork Club near those cool art galleries in Oakland that are open late for the art walk (a.k.a., oakland art murmur, www.oaklandartmurmur.com). So check out some of the galleries before the show, perhaps get a bite to eat at one of the nearby food providers, then get ready for some rockin' burlesque!

First Friday Follies!

Thank you for coming out and making our April show another success and thank you to all of our fabulous performers. Thank you, thank you, thank you! Mark your calendars because another First Friday Follies is just around the corner! That's right... May 1st we'll be back with another exciting show.

Performers include:

s(ASS)y hotbuns!

Bootsy La Rue! Debut!

Friday May 1st 7:30 pm SHARP
El Rio 3158 Mission Street
Hosted by Burlesque Legend Isis Starr
With Performances by Crystal Swarovski, Polly Peabody, Patty Smear, Honey Haliday and Ilsa the Wolf

$5-$10 sliding scale, 21+ w/ID

Red Hots Burlesque, May 1, 2009

About our debut performers:

Crystal Swarovski:
http://www.myspace.com/crystalswarovski

Crystal Swarovski has teased on stage in 16 countries. She has starred in numerous horror and sci fi films, including Burlesque Massacre, to be released May 2009, she fronts a band in NYC, Produces and Directs shows in La and around the globe, including Kubrilesque: or a burlesque tribute to Stanley Kubrick, which is on it's way to The Prague fringe festival and Torture Garden summer 2009. She has been featured on Mtv's Jack Ass with the Virginia city revival as George W Bush, you tube it "Congo Lisa" Crystal is also studying her LSATS, to attend Law School. She is an active Libertarian, between gigging, recording music, and traveling to exotic places like Egypt and Costa Rica.

Polly Peabody:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=5062723

POLLY PEABODY has graced the stages of the following establishments: The Slipper Room, The Blue Angel, Limelight, Rififi, Veruka, Galapagos, SHOW, The Spider Club, The Key Club, The Derby, Tangier, Passive Arts Studios, MBar, El Cid, Fais Do Do, Bordello and many more that she's forgotten to mention. She has worked with The Boomshell Girls (NYC), The Va Va Voom Room (San Francisco and NYC), The Red Rooster Review (Key West), and with the great Shelly Bomb on events in Vegas, NY, Madison, Wisconsin and beyond. She and partner Crystal Swarovski competed in the Miss Exotic World competition 2006, where they lost, gracefully, to a diminutive "woman" and a monkey (damn it!) Their production company, Lopsided Productions has been bringing infantile entertainment to LA for a good four years now -- on and off, you know, whatever... She was a contributor and co-writer on Miss Swarovski's opus, Kubrilesque. Before that, she was co-artistic director at SHOW Nightclub with NY club impresario, Norman Gosney. She co-directed The Pink Rhino Review, The Pirate Show, Dark Carnival and The Hitchcock Show, as well as co-opening for Pink, Britney Spears, and Dita Von Teese. Fancy right? (Except for all the co's -- What? I delegate...) Nowadays, her main focus within the wacky world of neuvo-retro-homo-fatso-metro- lesbo-burlesque is to sharpen her razor-like wit on the whetstone of David Hasselhoff, abortion jokes, and the vast comic trench of Adolf HItler, securing a place for herself as the proverbial "hostess with the mostest," a cognomen she has bestowed shamelessly on herself (at least she admits it, girls). Oh, Snap.

Patty Smear:
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewProfile&friendID=5923750

Patty Smear has been inspired by Pat Smear, Patty Smith, and of course the nuerous questionable Pap smear results shes had. She is an actress, playing practical jokes on blooper tv, doing blackface on MTV's Jackass, and having sex with Fred Savage, not real sex, just movie sex. She represents numerous companies as a spokesmodel, and is a dancer with 4 different dance troupes doing four styles of dance, burlesque being one of them. She just recently starred in the Count Smokula Propaganda film, "Clean Underwear and you" and the example of Dirty Panties! In her spare time she studies numerous styles of dance, so she can always mix it up..

Honey Haliday:
Honey Holiday recently made her burlesque debut in Kubrilesque in LA. Since then she has been blowing people's minds with her Flashdance and her 50s sock hop. She is a native and avid rollerblader. She has always had a zest for performance. You can usually find her taking walks in the park with her dog, loving fruits of all kinds. She hopes to blow your mind!

Fickle and fierce, Ilsa The Wolf is the most fatal fraulein in the Midwest. With a mere wink and a smile, she’ll have you howling for mercy. Ilsa’s long-time love of dance, theater and bedazzled panties brought her to the bawdy and brazen stage of burlesque just over a year ago. This is one wolf you won’t find wearing sheep’s clothing…or much else for that matter.

Sounds like a blast, doesn't it?

And on Wednesday, April 29, there's also SF Boylesque's DAS KABARETT: RECESS-I$-ON! It's the fourth in their series of cabaret shows, and the last one was sold out! The show is at Mama Calizo's Voice Factory:

DAS KABARETT: RECESS-I$-ON!

We've spent the past month gathering street performers, darning our socks and over-generously tipping strippers in our endeavor to bring you the greatest value of any show. This month, you're sure to agree that it is. RECESS-I$-ON features over 20 performers concisely packed into a 90 minute spectacular. In fact, it's so big, we've added a second night! Besides bringing you many of your favorite familiar faces, next week you'll discover 9 new pieces of eye candy... er, I mean talented performers. 1 Man Banjo will aurally satisfy you throughout intermission. Act II brings with it the debut of the Barnaby Sisters. Truly Scrumptious is joined onstage by her sisters, SImply & Sasparilla for a number that is guaranteed to please.

In addition to the freely flowing wines, this month you're also invited to sample authentic moonshine, chunky mudcake and fresh ripened fruit salad. Still want more? Join us at 7:30 in our experiential 'bona-fide' Vagabond Arcade (aka the lobby). Here you're invited to dine upon tin can soup & dumpster bread while our own one-man beau, jangle-band, Paris accompanies with vocals, harmonica and accordion,

The best part of it all is that the evening also serves as a benefit for Food Not Bombs. Great show. Free wine. Free food. All done for a good cause, this evening's a tremendous value.

NOTE: No one under 18 years old will be admitted.

Hubba Hubba Revue: Viva La Revolucion! Pictures in SF Weekly

My buddy—and one of the stars of the show—Milkshake let us know that the SF Weekly sent some of their intrepid "Photo Booth" photographers out to the Hubba Hubba Revue show on Friday at the DNA Lounge. To see the pics, click on the photo of the two lovely ladies (One of them is mentioned in this posting!) under the "Daily Weekly" and "Weekend Photos" categories at sfweekly.com. Click on the photo that isn't Morrissey, who allegedly was at the club on Saturday. Or go directly to http://sfweekly.com/slideshow/view/6331897.

If you ever wondered what the show is like, there are some pictures there that give you a taste of the HHR "Big Show" experience. Of course, the pictures can't match actually being there. But at least you'll know that there's a guy in a gorilla costume dancing with the performers and doing something vaguely disconcerting to Kingfish on stage.

I suppose that the first thing you'll notice is that people are in costume. Of course, the performers are in costume according to the theme of the show, but there are many in the audience who also dress up. It's not mandatory, but burlesque is one of the interactive entertainment options out there, so attendees do like to get into the fun themselves.

The overall experience is one of silly fun. Hubba Hubba Revue tends to play this aspect up just a bit more than other burlesque shows in the area, perhaps because they have funny fat guys as emcees. As with most good things, though, the producers and performers put a lot of serious work into the shows. They'll put together video snippets to project on the screen, design signs to hang around the DNA Lounge, have a whole crew to organize the show. The performers will put in hours and hours of work choosing music, choreographing an act, making their costumes, rehearsing, and doing much more. As I mentioned in one of my Twitter/Blogger posts, it's pretty impressive how they put together a four-hour show. They're so organized that they're already working on the August show!

Also in the pictures you can see the layout of the club. At http://sfweekly.com/slideshow/view/6331897/19, you can see the band, La Plebe, performing on stage as the audience watches from the main floor and the upper level. Also as I mentioned in a previous post, it's a different experience depending on where you stand in the club. The performers and more hardcore fans stand near the stage on the main level. So things tend to be a bit more raucous there. Along the railing on the upper level, audience members are still attentive, but tend to be more subdued. It's like most shows in larger venues in that respect.

The shows do get good crowds, as you can see at http://sfweekly.com/slideshow/view/6331897/21. There will be several hundreds of people in the audience throughout the evening. Some people come early, some late. Some leave early, some leave late. There are always a lot of people to bump into as you move around the club, though, on the way to the loo. Ha ha.

Usually, the show begins at 10pm with the band taking the stage. Just before that at 9:30, usually Brian of Swing Goth gives some free dance lessons upstairs. After the band finishes their set at around 11. There's a 15 minute intermission while the crew clears the stage. Then the first half of burlesque begins. After about an hour of performances, there is another 15 minute intermission. Some of the cast, crew and audience members socialize outside and you can mingle amongst them, as I sometimes do. Then there's about another hour of performances, which finish up around 2am, give or take. Then there's dancing on the main floor. People will slowly filter out of the club, and you can watch the performers stream out with their costumes, instruments, and props in tow.

It really is a grand way to spend a Friday evening. If you go, take some earplugs if you have sensitive hearing. The band can be loud, though it's pretty much the same as going to a rock concert. If you forget, there are free earplugs at the coat check upstairs. You don't need to dress up, but you may have more fun if you do. Bring a date, bring a friend, bring a stranger you met on Craigslist. Ha ha! But really, burlesque is a social thing, so you'll notice that most audience members come in groups. Any way you come, however, you'll have a great time.

Hmm... Why do I think Kingfish and Eddie would have a joke about that last statement? ;-)

About our debut performers:

From Miss Glory Pearl:
Trained in theatre, classical and modern dance, I am a pole dancer and aerial acrobat (static trapeze, aerial hoop and tissu) whose acts combine a unique blend of classic burlesque and jaw-dropping aerial. I am the UK’s leading Burly-Pole artist and can be found teaching pole dance and burlesque for Cardiostriptease in Kent and the Pole Dancing School in London.

From Paco Fish:
Paco Fish thrives on duality. The cabaret-performing alter ego of Paul Galbraith, a cytogenetics technologist by day, Paco Fish is a dynamic performer of spoken and physical comedy, burlesque, circus, and any other medium where he can find a stage. Most of Paco’s characters exist in multiple worlds at the same time and his acts are visual representations of the transitions between different, but coexisting realities. Whether playing the aggressive lion with a heart (and thong) of gold, the go-go dancer working part time as the Grim Reaper (also with a thong of gold), or the bride of indeterminate gender, Paco dismantles assumptions and defies convention with humor and passion.

Last chance to see Kitten on the Keys' "Does This Piano..." on Sunday, April 5, 2009

I was fortunate enough to snare the last ticket to Kitten's show last night. If you're a fan of Kitten, or if you just love a rowdy, profane, rambunctious, hilarious good time, then ya gotta see this show!

From her childhood in the East Bay liturgical dancing, to her experiences with drugs and Courtney Love, to her marriage with a guy who ends up leaving her for a woman who eats out of a dog bowl, to finally accepting herself as she is, Kitten finds the bawdy humor in all of it. I'm not sure if I got all of her stories straight, so you'll just have to see the show for yourself! She sure does have a lot of stories to tell....

It's actually quite a courageous performance. Kitten puts herself out there, insecurities, wardrobe malfunctions and all. She is quite brilliant. The more I see her perform, the more I appreciate her talent and abilities. Of course, I'm a bit biased because she's a buddy. Others have given her glowing reviews, though, so there's quite a few of us who have become Kitten fans.

The show begins at 2pm, but get there early to get a good seat!

Kitten on the Keys and Fou Fou Ha! this weekend

Kitten on the Keys and Fou Fou Ha! both have shows this weekend at Mama Calizo's Voice Factory. Kitten's show, "Does This Piano Make My Ass Look Big?" (previous post) is at 8pm on Friday and Saturday, April 3 and 4, and at 2pm on Sunday, April 5. This is the last weekend to see her show, so don't miss it!

I may need to correct this past Monday's post. The Mama Calizo's Voice Factory website (www.voicefactorysf.org) lists the dates for Fou Fou Ha!'s "Out of Order" (previous post) as being April 5-7. Yet Fou Fou Ha!'s website (www.foufouha.com) lists the shows as being April 3-5, as does the Brown Paper Tickets page (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/59785). I've sent an email out to the artists and the venue, so I'll let you know which set of dates is the correct ones once I get a response. I've a hunch that the shows are April 3-5, though.

First Friday Follies and the Art of Deneane Niebergall, Friday, April 3, 2009

It's the first Friday of the month, so what does that mean? Yes! It's time for First Friday Follies and Oakland Art Murmur, which is the art walk. Only you murmur while walking. Just kidding! There is a map of the Art Murmur at www.oaklandartmurmur.com/pages/Jmap/Jmap.php. The Stork Club is near the Buzz Gallery on Telegraph Avenue.

But before we get to the FFF lineup, Deneane Niebergall of the Burlesqueteers has new work as part of a four person show, "Surface Tension," which has an opening reception from 6pm to 9. So before you head out to the Stork Club for FFF, check out the Chandra Cerrito Contemporary at 25 Grand Avenue, upper level. It's just a few blocks away. Click the link for a map. And say hi to Deneane!

Alrighty, without further ado, here is what you can expect at the Stork Club!

First Friday Follies

Hello party peeps! It is already time for First Friday Follies! As usual, we have an amazing line up for you!

Bombshell Betty! Burlesque entrepreneur and innovator extraordinaire! Red Hot solo performances!

Kitty Von Quim! Of Rubenesque Burlesque fame...solo performances to rock your socks off!

Juicy D. Light! Also of Rubenesque Burlesque! She's gonna shake, shimmy, wiggle and jiggle her sexy way into your hearts!! Yowza!

Alright folks, hope to see you there! No cover charge, but donations are highly encouraged (and appreciated!) to keep our show running!

The Stork Club is located at 2330 Telegraph Ave in Oakland.
Showtime: 9:30ish

It's a good idea to get out to the Stork Club by about 9pm or earlier. The way the club is set up, only the first three or so rows of standing people can see the stage. It's not elevated, so the people in back have a hard time seeing the acts. One tip is to look at the mirror that lines the right side of the club. Sometimes you can see what's going on in the reflection!

Just a reminder that Bombshell Betty and Fromagique have put together a benefit show for burlesque performer Ruby Lee Rouge (aka Stella Lane from Dames of Glory) who was injured backstage at a show.
