San Francisco Bay Area burlesque for March 31 - April 6, 2011

This coming week will see the arrival of the Dangerous Curves Ahead: Burlesque on the Go-Go from Brooklyn! They've arrived in the south of our state and are making their way north. See them this Monday at the Hubba Hubba Revue show at the Uptown Club, and on Tuesday at Club Deluxe for a special edition of a Little Minsky's show! The troupe will then be off to visit Santa Rosa and Sebastopol on Wednesday and Thursday.

If you have some time on Wednesday and would like to take a class with the troupe, they'll be at M Studio Dance, 3952 Sebastopol Road, Suite 158 (map), from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. to conduct a workshop. For more information about the workshop, please email the troupe at burlesqueonthegogo AT gmail DOT com.

Otherwise, the week ahead has some exciting things happening locally. On Friday, there will be a Haight Street Hop happening at the Milk Bar in San Francisco. There will also be the Red Hots Burlesque weekly show kicking off earlier in the evening. Then across the Bay, the First Friday Follies will be bringing us a Zombie Easter in 3-D at the Stork Club! Johnny Crash and Dixie DeLish model at Dr. Sketchy's SF this Tuesday, March

This Tuesday evening, photographer Johnny Crash and Dixie DeLish will be the models at Dr. Sketchy's San Francisco at 111 Minna Gallery!

You may recognize Johnny as one of the photographers who is snapping pictures of the performers at many burlesque shows and other events around the Bay Area. He's also the author of Burly Q:The sparkly side of San Francisco, a book of his burlesque photography. But this Tuesday, the tables will be turned and Johnny will be the model, along with Dixie DeLish.

This Tuesday's session of Dr. Sketchy's will coincide with Sketch Tuesdays, so it'll get crowded. If you know that you'll be attending Dr. Sketchy's, you'll want to purchase your tickets in advance via drsketchyssf.com (the PayPal links below are the same ones on the Dr. Sketchy's site). So get your tickets before they sell out! Tickets will be will call, so your name will be on a list at the door.

111 Minna Gallery is located at 111 Minna Street in San Francisco (map). The event starts at 7:00 p.m., but you'll want to get there early to get a decent place from which to sketch. Tickets are $10.00 general admission, and $7.00 for students and teachers (bring your I.D. to show at the door when you pick up your tickets). Artists attending will need to be 21 or older.

Celebrate Kingfish's birthday at Monday's Hubba Hubba Revue show at the Uptown

This Monday night, March 14, it'll be a celebration at the Hubba Hubba Revue show at the Uptown Club in Oakland! It'll be Kingfish's birthday!

It's his birthday, but you'll get the present of a fantastic show that has been put together. A lot of Hubba Hubba favorites, such as McPuzo and Trotsky, Room for Cream, Wiggy Darlington, Sid Scenic, Honey Lawless, Bunny Pistol, and more, will perform for all assembled. Plus, Sparkly Devil and Zip the What-Is-It? will be guest hosting! It's a fantastic lineup of some of the Bay Area's finest burlesque performers!

Since this is the first Hubba Hubba Revue show since last Thursday when he passed away, it will also be a celebration of Eddie Dane's life. There is an Eddie Dane Memorial Bash in the works, but Eddie will be shown a lot of love at this and upcoming Hubba Hubba Revue shows. So join with other fans and members of the Hubba Hubba family in sharing remembrances of the joy and laughter that Eddie brought to the world.

The doors will open at 9:00 p.m., and the show will start at 10:15. The cover is $5.00, and you'll need to be 21 or older to get into the club. The Uptown is located at 1928 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland (map). It's very close to the 19th Street BART station, and there is street parking available.

The Passing of Eddie Dane on Thursday, March 10

Eddie Dane at a 2008 Hubba Hubba Revue show.
Yesterday, burlesque and variety show producer and emcee Eddie Dane passed away. He was 42.

Eddie, who was partners with Kingfish in the Hubba Hubba Revue for the past 4 1/2 years, was also the producer of Dane's Dames, one of the first neo-burlesque troupes in the county.

Producer, performer and author Michelle Baldwin wrote about her remembrances of meeting Eddie at one of the first Tease-O-Ramas in her blog, Shimmy Shaker.

At last night's Curvicious Cabaret debut, there were a lot of remembrances of and tributes to Eddie Dane. Producer Sparkly Devil closed the show by performing one of Eddie's favorite numbers. She posted the following message yesterday about Eddie's passing in several Yahoo! Groups. It provides information about Eddie's passing.

I know some of you already know, but for those that don't: San Francisco producer and MC Eddie Dane passed away today. He was 42.

Eddie was the founder of Dane's Dames, one of the very first neo-burlesque troupes in the country. Some of you remember him from the very first Teaseorama in New Orleans. He went on to produce San Francisco's Spectacular Spectacular, and Hubba Hubba Revue.

I know this comes as a shock to many. Eddie has struggled with heart problems over the past 4 years, and recently those issues were compounded by kidney failure. Eddie was in the hospital for the past 6 weeks, and today he died very peacefully, surrounded by his family and loved ones.

Eddie was one of the founding members of our community; a hilarious comedian, a fantastic MC, and an all around bad ass guy. He leaves behind many who loved him and were greatly inspired by him. He will be dearly missed by us all.

--Sparkly

If there will be any public memorial or tribute shows, I'll post them here. In the meantime, there will be a Hubba Hubba Revue show at the Uptown in Oakland next Monday. The details are in the calendar above and in the weekly round-up of shows.

Eddie will be greatly missed.
