San Francisco area burlesque for December 1 to December 7, 2010

This week marks the start of the holiday season-themed burlesque shows. Yowza!

Bunny Pistol kicks things off with her Holiday Party at the Hemlock Tavern in San Francisco on Wednesday. There will be a party starting at 8:30 p.m. with music, door presents, and food and drink. Though you may have to bring your own mistletoe! And of course, there will be burlesque performances starting at 9:30. The cover will be a $6 donation at the door.

One of the quirks of this week's schedule is that there will be four different shows on Friday night in four different areas of the Bay Area! You may not be able to make all four shows, so you'll have to pick one or two to see.

The first show is the weekly Red Hots Burlesque show at El Rio in San Francisco's Mission District. This week, Living Legend of Burlesque Isis Starr is the host, and there will be visiting performers from Los Angeles. The show starts at 7:30 p.m., and cover is on a sliding scale from $5.00 to $10.00, so you pay what you can.

Next, sASSy's Seaside Burlesque will be happening on the coast in Pacifica at Winters Tavern. The doors open at 8:00 p.m., but the show starts at 9:00. This month, the Hubba Hubba Revue's Kingfish will be host, and the performers will include Honey Lawless, Miss Mae Western, Bunny Pistol, Miss Honey Penny, and more!

Over in Oakland at the Stork Club, Juicy D. Light is taking over the reins of First Friday Follies, and their first show is F#%k the Holidays! Your hostess will be the same Juicy D. Light, and the show will have performances by Revolva of Portland, Lizzy D. Vine of Sacramento, Rubenesque Burlesque, The Stripping Granny, and more! The doors are at 9pm, and the free show starts at 9:30.

Up in Sebastopol at Aubergine After Dark, Risk-A Cabaret is saying goodbye, at least for a little while. They're intimating that they'll be going on the road, so they're last show will be a Sendoff Party! Oleeander Moon will be hosting a show that will feature Nicki Sparxx, Miss Queen B, Rose Harden, Honeysuckle Moses, and others. There will be fire performances, too! It all begins at 8pm, and it's just $10.00 ($5.00 if you dress as a vagabond). Come and say bon voyage to the North Bay's only burlesque show!

On Saturday, join the Hot Pink Feathers and Blue Bone Express at Cafe Van Kleef in Oakland for their monthly show, Burlesque n' Brass. This month, there will be 16 showgirls in that intimate venue, and they'll be premiering their new act, "Santa Does the Mambo!" The doors open at 8:30pm, and the show starts at 9:30. Cover is $10.00.

Last, but not least, The Mischievous Maidens make an appearance at the Hubba Hubba Revue show at the Uptown Nightclub on Monday night. Bubble Yum and Kitty Coquette will also perform some solo numbers. I'm suspecting that the acts will have a holiday theme! The Maidens willl be joined by Shadow Circus Creature Theater, SF Boylesque and MJ Paul's Go-Go Girlies! And there will be more performers, too. Lots of show for just a fiver! Doors will be open at 9:00 p.m., and the show will being at around 10:15.

So there you have it, the week in SF burlesque for the first week of December 2010. Happy holidays, everyone! :-)

Intro to Burlesque: “Charm School”

TUESDAYS – December 7, 14, 21, 28 / 7:30PM-8:30PM (4 week series)
Developing the fundamental elements of classic burlesque. Harkening back to the charm schools of the 1950′s, we will begin each class with mild stretches and “drills” on posture (yes, you will stand/walk with a book on your head) and mimicking several classic pinup poses. Then we’ll dig into a focus topic, varied each week.
Led by Mynx d’Meanor (pictured, on the left).

Week 1: “The Look” – Finding your best angles, standing and sitting. We will spend time really looking at ourselves in the mirror to figure out how to show off our assets in the most flattering way possible, and hide any “flaws” we’re not so proud of.
Week 2: “The Strut” – Different ways of walking, based on character (shy kitten? vamp? etc.) and musicality.
Week 3: “The Dance” / The Drama” – Basic dance moves, developing character and drama with musicality and costume.
Week 4: “Putting It All Together” / “Taking It Off” – Tease and strip techniques, overview of playing with accessories (gloves, stockings, etc.)

COST
Drop-ins: $20.00 (Cash)
Pre-registration: $60.00 (PayPal/Credit Card. Eventbrite transaction fee applies.)

Burlesque Dance Party Workout

TUESDAYS – December 7, 14, 21, 28 / 6:30PM-7:15PM (4 week series)
Low-impact workout incorporating burlesque and other dance moves. We’ll be dancing to tunes from the swing era, classic bump n’ grind striptease music, and other contemporary songs that evoke the same feeling.
Led by Mynx d’Meanor.

COST
Drop-ins: $10.00 (Cash)
Pre-registration: $35.00 (PayPal/Credit Card. Eventbrite transaction fee applies.)

Instructors Flame Cynders and Mynx d’Meanor have a combined 20+ years of dance/performance experience, encompassing disciplines such as ballet, ballroom, bellydance, modern, “street”, and jazz/swing. We are heavily influenced and inspired by the dance stylings of Bob Fosse, Cyd Charisse and other “greats” of Broadway and MGM musicals. We incorporate these influences in our approach to teaching burlesque fundamentals and dance choreography.

San Francisco area burlesque for November 24 to November 30, 2010

It's opening week of Burlesque (read the film review), which means that burlesque around here will be getting a lot of free publicity. There was a good article about the local burlesque scene by the Bay Area News Group's features writer Laura Casey in Monday's newspapers. She interviewed Miss Cherry Galette and Kellita of the Hot Pink Feathers. It's a good article, so check it out!

I'm predicting that the film will do pretty well. The box office prognosticators are putting Burlesque's opening weekend (Wednesday through Sunday) at about $20 million. I'll say it will pull in a few million more. There's something to be said for a film around the holidays in which no one dies, there's lots of eye candy, and it doesn't make you think too much.

But out here in the real world, there's real burlesque happening! Yes, even during Thanksgiving week!

On Wednesday, Hubba Hubba Revue will be participating in Bondage A-Go-Go's Sleazy Speakeasy 17th Anniversary Party and Roaring Twenties Costume Gala. The Hubba's portion of the show will be from 10:45 to 11:30, and the event will be have it's own BAGG dress code. Check out the details below.

Red Hots Burlesque has their show on Friday at their usual spot at El Rio in San Francisco. This week, The Flying Fox visits from New York City, Fannie Fuller of Portland, and Uni and her Ukelele will take time from touring to perform on the El Rio stage. Burlesque movie review: Burly-Q goes Hollywood with Cher and Christina Aguilera

Burlesque

Starring: Christina Aguilera, Cher, Cam Gigandet, Stanley Tucci, Kristen Bell, Eric Dane, Peter Gallagher, Alan Cumming, Julianne Hough, Dianna Agron

Written and directed by: Steven Antin

Studio: Screen Gems

MPAA Rating: PG-13

Running Time: 100 Minutes

Official Website: www.burlesque-movie.com

Opens November 24, 2010

I felt an obligation to see an advance screening of the new Christina Aguilera and Cher movie Burlesque to see what it's all about. I shall write this review of the film keeping in mind that there will be people from the general movie-going public as well as the burlesque community reading this piece.

For more than a decade, a burlesque revival has been underway. In various clubs, bars, and theaters, burlesque performances have spread out from places like New York City, Chicago, Denver, and San Francisco to the heartland and across borders to other countries. Artists as Rihanna and Lady Gaga (a former burlesque and go-go dancer) have incorporated burlesque into their songs and performances. Burlesque has also inspired fashion designers such as Yves Saint Laurent among many others. So it's not surprising that Hollywood decided to make a film about this underground phenomenon. Indeed, it's been said to have been in the works since the late 1990s when the revival was picking up steam.

Burlesque—which is the motion picture debut for pop music superstar Christina Aguilera and the first major motion picture that Cher has made in 10 years—is positioned to take advantage of burlesque's burgeoning popularity.

If you're looking for an accurate cinematic portrayal of this revival, however, Burlesque is not it.

If you're looking for a well-written, complex, yet nuanced musical drama filled with engaging characters, this is not it either.

But if you're looking for a glitzy, upbeat, splashy film featuring music video-like performances by Christina Aguilera and Cher, you may just enjoy this movie.

Small-town girl Ali (Christina Aguilera) leaves Iowa to seek stardom singing and dancing in Hollywood and finds it. Along the way, she helps to save a burlesque club owned by Tess (Cher) and makes (almost) everyone happy. A unique story this is not.

The film's strengths and weaknesses are evident within the opening scenes. The movie starts out in an Iowa roadhouse, where Ali decides to quit her dead-end job. Almost immediately, she jumps on the small stage and starts singing and dancing. If we didn't know it before, we know now that this will be a musical. And Christina Aguilera sounds and looks good as long as she's singing and dancing.

Another of the problems that becomes immediately apparent is that scene transitions in this movie are poorly constructed. When we next see Ali, she's in Los Angeles already. There's no sense of time having passed. It's like being in a casino's showroom, which incidentally is an apt description of Burlesque.

Seemingly on the fist night she's in town, she wanders into the Burlesque Lounge ("We may not have windows, but we do have the best view on the Sunset Strip!") after seeing a dancer taking a break on the stairs outside. I suppose "Burlesque Club" sounded too generic to the creators of this movie.

Writer and director Steven Antin has said in interviews that he wanted to keep things light and avoid the dark melodrama that has been common in burlesque and cabaret movies in the past. He's succeeded unequivocally. There's no toil for our heroine! Things happen in rapid-fire fashion for Ali, all seemingly to get her to the next musical sequence.

Though the script was written by Antin, it also passed through John Patrick Shanley (Moonstruck, Doubt) and Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich) for some uncredited rewrites. Some of the dialog is corny, yet not memorable enough to for people to repeat ad infinitum in true cult movie fashion. This movie is not campy enough to be likened to Showgirls. Also, the actors' input was taken into consideration during rewrites, and the ending was reshot after the original Pretty Woman homage was not well-received by test audiences. The story thus winds up being choppy and seeming more like a storyboard than a finished and polished script. It also ends in an unbelievably happy fashion, where Ali is a star, Tess keeps the Burlesque Lounge, and everybody else gets something. Musicals tend to end happily, but this ending is beyond the pale.

Probably the core of many a musical is a romance. What about the romantic aspects of Burlesque? Aguilera's Tess and Cam Gigandet's Jack generate some sparks, but nothing resembling a roaring fire. They're cute together, but nothing special.

The characters who generate the most chemistry together are Cher's Tess and Stanley Tucci's Sean, who plays her gay best friend and stage manager. They have an easy kind of relationship, while still they still poke and prod each other's buttons to keep themselves moving forward. It's apparent that they're the most accomplished actors of the lot. Tucci's performance is one of the best things about Burlesque. The scene in which Tess asks Sean to tell her a new lie is priceless.

One thing that is unfortunate is that after many surgical procedures to keep her youthful appearance, Cher's face doesn't seem capable of registering subtle emotions any longer. She has one of those "frozen" faces.

Another problem is that the characters are shallow, mere cardboard cutouts of real people. They lack real substance and depth, something which might make us care about them. Most of the characters, with the exception of Tess and Sean for the most part, are little more than walking and talking stereotypes who aren't very interesting. There's the sleazy wealthy guy Marcus (Eric Dane), Tess's even sleazier ex-husband and business partner Vince (Peter Gallagher), the girl who gets pregnant Georgia (Julianne Hough), the rival performer with issues Nikki (Kristen Bell), and even Ali herself, who is the quintessential good girl with a dream.

In most good movies, the main character transforms or grows in some way over the course of the story arc. Ali pretty much stays the same throughout this film, however, which is fortunate for Christina Aguilera, as she shows a distinct lack of acting chops. Ali is written as being pretty one-dimensional—spunky and determined—so Aguilera's not being able to act becomes less distracting after a while.

What she can do well, however, is sing and dance. It's hard to imagine how such a big voice can fit in such a petite body. The dance routines are worthy of a Las Vegas showroom, and the scenes are shot well. The dancing is pleasing to the eye, and the songs are pleasing to the ear.

Which brings us to the songs. While they sound good enough, I had enough trouble remembering the new tunes as I was leaving the theater, much less the lyrics. Included are covers by Aguilera of Etta James' “Something's Got A Hold On Me” and “Tough Lover,” as well as a cover of Mae West's “Guy What Takes His Time.” The only new song that stuck with me even after repeat YouTube viewings was Cher's performance of "Welcome to Burlesque."

The choreography by Joey Pizzi (It's Complicated) and Denise Faye looks good in that Las Vegas showroom kind of way. They both were associate choreographers on last year's Nine, along with Tara Nicole Hughes who is an associate choreographer on this film as well. Michael Kaplan (Blade Runner, Fight Club) did the costume design, which went along well with the choreography and overall look and feel of the film.

Although the film is called Burlesque, there are almost no striptease routines in this film. Probably the best striptease is performed by Jack (Cam Gigandet) with pajamas and a box of Famous Amos cookies as he's humorously getting ready to start his PG-13 romance with Tess. Once again Antin has said that he wanted to de-emphasize the bump and grind of burlesque, which explains the lack of striptease. I suppose he wanted to maintain the MPAA rating that would allow all of the target audience to see the film, which has been speculated to be women ages 13 to 30 based on a Burlesque-MTV nationwide dance contest staged recently.

Oddly enough, there are some details that give a nod to burlesque's past glory days. When preparing to dance at the club, Tess does her homework by reading some books, including Ann Corio's This Was Burlesque. And I may be mistaken, but there appears to be a photo of burlesque legend Lili St. Cyr that Tess has placed on her dressing room mirror. These details are nice, but one wonders if they would have approved of their association with this motion picture.

Ultimately, Burlesque is a glitzy and glamorous Hollywood version of a Las Vegas version of burlesque. If that sounds like watered-down burlesque, that's what it looks and feels like. A more appropriate title for the film would be Cabaret, but I suppose that one was already taken.

What's missing is what has made burlesque's revival so widespread and popular at a grassroots level. The self-expression of the performers who create their own wardrobe and choreography. The acceptance of different body types as being sexy and beautiful. The examination and parody of society's norms and mores. The variety of acts in a burlesque show, including comedians, magicians, aerialist, circus sideshows, musicians, clowns, and almost anything else you can think of. But that's what happens when you have a big budget Hollywood film. Everything that makes something like burlesque popular in the first place gets stripped out (no pun intended) and replaced by glitz without much substance.

Burlesque is entertaining if you can look past its numerous flaws. It's light, glitzy, and upbeat with lots of fun dance sequences and amazing vocal performances by Christina Aguilera. If you haven't seen many musicals before, you'll probably enjoy the film. Though you can probably just watch the official YouTube Burlesque videos for the some of the highlights of the movie and save the $10 or more for the ticket.

If you're looking to see what burlesque is really about, though, you'd probably be best off watching a documentary such as Deidre Timmons' A Wink and a Smile (now available on Netflix), or Leslie Zemeckis' Behind the Burly-Q, which features interviews with many of the legends of burlesque. You can also read about the new burlesque in Michelle Baldwin's Burlesque and the New Bump-N-Grind or in Jo Weldon's The Burlesque Handbook.

Or, better yet, Google 'burlesque” and find a show in or near your town. After all, burlesque is best experienced live.

Red Hots Burlesque: Twisted Tradition in Berkeley on Wednesday, SF Beach Party on Friday

This week, Red Hots Burlesque has two shows to tempt you. One in the East Bay on Wednesday, and the other at their usual spot in San Francisco on Friday!

At the new Space Lounge in the Saturn Cafe in Berkeley, Red Hots presents "Twisted Tradition!" See the artwork of Spygirl Friday on the walls of the Lounge while you marvel at the her talents and those of the Diamond Daggers, La Chica Boom, Ruby Vixen, and more!

Then listen and dance to the sounds of the Dixieland Dykes +3! It's sure to be a humdinger of a show at the Space Lounge. Arrive early and grab some grub! They've got a healthy vegetarian menu, and delicious milkshakes too! See their menu on their site at saturncafe.com. The Saturn Cafe is located at 2175 Allston Way in Berkeley (map), really close to the Downtown Berkeley BART station!

And I do believe this is an 18 and older venue, so college students are welcome! The last burlesque show at the Saturn Cafe was 18+, and the show was filled with a very enthusiastic crowd, so I expect this show to be rockin' too!

Her works, which span various mediums, are each concerned with the task of making trash into treasure. They are ceaselessly formed in answer to the rather specific artistic challenge of how to make something beautiful and valuable out of materials and visual cultures considered worthless (discarded wood, discontinued film stocks, images from magazines donated to charity shops, etc.) Spy is fixated on re-presenting out-dated or marginalized materials and images (unearthed from second-rate 1970s porn magazines or photographs found on roadsides) in the languages of fine art in an attempt to question the manners in which these items (and their respective lives) were first made expendable. Correspondingly, her work not only demands that we recognize the ethics implied in our relationships with such detritus, but that we see the beauty inherent in these items' faded shines.

Dr. Sketchy San Francisco presents Talia this Tuesday, November 16

Dr. Sketchy's SF presents local art model and aerialist Talia this Tuesday at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco (map).

What is Dr. Sketchy's? It's an opportunity for you to learn to draw—or to improve your drawing skills—using a live model. It's the anti-art school! Plus, it's a chance to socialize with your fellow artists over a drink in a fun and pressure-free atmosphere. It's part of a network of Dr. Sketchy's worldwide!

The regular Dr. Sketchy's session begins at 7:00 p.m., and it usually ends at about 10:00 p.m. What usually happens is that the first few poses are relatively short at a few minutes, then they get longer as the evening goes on. There will probably be a few breaks during the evening, both for the artists and the model. Those breaks will be a good opportunity to get a drink from the bar or to schmooze!

In addition, there will be a drawing workshop with one of Dr. Sketchy's organizers, Diane Olivier, just before the regular session. She's on the faculty of City College of San Francisco, and she'll help you to become the artist you've always wanted to be! The workshop runs from 5:30 to 6:30, and it's limited to the first 12 people. The fee is $20, but it includes a front row seat at the Dr. Sketchy's session! Email Diane to reserve your spot today!

Kitten on the Keys and Mischievous Maidens at Les Folies Champagne this Tuesday

On Tuesday, November 16, Les Folies Champagne presents Kitten on the Keys (pictured) and the Mischievous Maidens at the Bubble Lounge located at 714 Montgomery Street (map) in San Francisco!

Kitten on the Keys (aka Suzanne Ramsey) is arguably San Francisco's most popular and famous burlesque and cabaret performer. She has starred in the movie Tournée (On Tour), which was in competition for the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival. She's also been seen on HBO, E!, IFC, Queer TV MTV, and Bravo, as well as numerous theater stages across the North America and Europe. She sings Tin Pan Alley treasures, bawdy show tunes, the blues, and classic rock. All performed on a piano, ukelele, or accordion. Then she transforms into Kitten on the Keys, a bawdy lass whose double entendre-filled ditties will leave you rolling with laughter in the aisles.

Also performing will be the Mischievous Maidens, those seemingly innocent young ladies who are a bit more risqué when they get on a stage! They also have their own show every second Friday of the month at the Skylark Bar in San Francisco's Mission district.

Performing his magic and comedy for you will be the top-rated Ash K. the Pretty Good! He was selected as a 2010 Best of the BayList winner for "Best Theatre Group," and he has five-star ratings on both Yelp and Citysearch. Check out this video below to see a sample of what you can expect on Tuesday!

Finally, there will be a Sexy Santa Booth where you can get your usual holiday card photos taken, only with a risqué twist this year!

So catch the show on Tuesday, as the Folies will take a break for the holidays. And the next one will be in January, so drink some champagne, prepare for the holidays, and enjoy the show. Cheers!
