San Francisco Burlesque Review BurlyQ&A: Sugar la Vie

Sugar la Vie in red photoWelcome to the first San Francisco Burlesque Review BurlyQ&A! This will be the first in a series of interviews that will focus on the performers, producers, the movers and the shakers, and others involved in San Francisco Bay Area burlesque. Our first interview subject is Seattle transplant, Sugar la Vie!

The idea for this interview with came quite serendipitously. I was thinking that I needed to do more interviews, and then I almost immediately opened her email message thanking me for starting and maintaining this blog and calendar... and inspiration struck!

Miss la Vie is a recent transplant from Seattle, where she was a student at Trixie Lane's Kindergarten of Burlesque. She's also taken classes with Indigo Blue, Catherine D'Lish, and Michelle l'Amour. She's a performer with the Tempting Tarts, and returns to their stage whenever she visits Seattle.

In person, Sugar is a tall, willowy blonde who possesses a natural grace and elegance. And if you read through this interview, you'll get the impression that she's very detail-oriented, precise, and thorough. She knows what she wants, and dresses appropriately!

In her offstage life, she works as a web designer at a software company. So she's a bit of a geek or dork, as you'll read. In fact, she posted on Twitter that she's been called a “glamour dork,” an assessment with which she agrees.

For me, several things stand out in this interview. For one, Miss la Vie is quite eloquent in her answers. I was also stuck by her description of the differences between the Seattle and San Francisco burlesque scenes. I've been thinking about how different shows in theaters are from shows in clubs or bars.

So far, Miss La Vie has performed at Little Minsky's twice. If you'd like to see her perform, her next appearance will be at this coming Monday's Hubba Hubba Revue show at the Uptown Club in Oakland.

She's also looking to perform in more shows, and she's also willing to trade her web design, photo retouching, and music and video editing skills for dressmaking and photography. You may contact Sugar La Vie via sugarlavie.com, through email at sugar@bornbombshell.com, or by calling her at (415) 894-5239.

Sugar La Vie

Q: How did you decide upon your stage name, Sugar la Vie? Could you describe her persona and how she's different from your offstage self?

I wanted something that sounded glamourous, like an old Hollywood movie star, but I also thought it would be fun to reference something edible. (I really enjoy food.) At some point, I paired "Sugar" with "C'est la vie" and liked the way it sounds. After trying it on for a while, I realized how fitting it really is for me, in a lot of ways.

By day, I'm a fairly goofy, tomboyish nerd girl, working as a web designer in a predominantly male-oriented industry. I often suppress the more feminine aspects of myself, inside and out, trying to be "one of the guys."

When you suppress a side of your personality long enough, sometimes it finds a way out on its own. I love to dress up and do glamourous things, and all day I feel like I'm not "supposed" to be feminine or sexy. Sugar la Vie is about accepting that part of my personality and really indulging in it. It's decadent, and a bit "sinful", like finally giving in to that rich dessert you've been craving... (Which I fully condone, by the way.)

Q: Could you describe how you entered the world of burlesque? How long have you been performing?

I've always been a dancer, having spent most of my childhood taking a variety of dance classes, then performing on dance teams as I got older. I've also always really loved old jazz music, vintage clothes and hair, pin-ups, and classic movie musicals.

This led me into the swing scene in the '90s, and eventually I joined a performing lindy hop troupe. When we were short on men, the girls of the troupe broke out on our own to form a chorus girl troupe. We performed Charleston routines and Josephine Baker-style acts, breaking down scenes from movies like Singin' in the Rain and coming up with original material as well.

Every time I choreographed an act for the group, a latent desire to be sexy or naughty would keep trying to come out. Eventually I realized I had a lot more fun performing the sultry routines than the vintage jazz and Charleston pieces.

Around that same time, I saw what was probably my first real burlesque show, a big theatrical production called "Land of the Sweets: The Burlesque Nutcracker" at the Triple Door in Seattle. This show brought back daydreams I've always had about wanting to be a showgirl in an old musical - it was glamourous extravagance, delirious femininity, and giggling silliness.

It also helped that I happened to know one of the girls in the show. I thought, "I could do that." Something clicked into place in my head, and I started thinking about how I could make it happen. I took some burlesque classes, some private lessons, graduated from "Kindergarten of Burlesque" about a year ago, and started putting acts together and performing with a Seattle burlesque troupe, The Tempting Tarts.

Q: You've recently relocated from Seattle to San Francisco. What is your initial impression regarding the similarities and differences between the two cities with regards to burlesque?

I have to admit, I had a little bit of culture shock the first time I went out to a burlesque show here. Most of the burlesque shows in Seattle are held in actual theaters, even the smaller shows. The first few shows I went to here were in bars with standing room only and makeshift stages. I also dressed up more than anyone else in the audience... Everything seemed much more casual than I was used to.

I've since explored the city more and have found venues that fit the bill. For me, a burlesque show is a form of theatre, and I greatly appreciate the shows that are held in more intimate venues where people aren't milling about getting drinks during the show. I don't need a fancy theatre setting (though that sure is nice!), but it's amazing what a subtle thing like adequate seating will do for a show.

Another difference I've started to notice between burlesque in San Francisco and the scene in Seattle is a subtle trend I like very much. I think there is a greater tendency towards comedy acts in Seattle right now — most shows I went to before I left Seattle were probably 80% comedy, 20% striptease. I love the glamourous side of burlesque and the more subtle humor and mischief of a classic striptease, and there are many great performers pulling that off beautifully here. I love comedy burlesque as well, but too much of it can feel like I'm being hit over the head with punchline pasties. The shows I've been to in SF are more balanced for me, with one or two comedy acts a night and a lot more classic burlesque.

These are really subtle differences, when I sit and really think about the two scenes. On the whole, I think Seattle and San Francisco are both excellent burlesque scenes, with a lot of commonalities, and I'm excited to continue exploring the scene here.

Sugar La Vie - Pinup Shot

Q: What is your favorite item of clothing that you've worn onstage?

I actually have a costume I have yet to wear, but I'm really excited about it... I'm not much of a seamstress at all, so when I put together a vintage-style costume for my first act, the kind with the long skirt made of two sheer panels of fabric, I had always planned on replacing it with something professionally made.

I finally found a seamstress to do this for me, a woman in Kansas named Linda Joyce (www.glitzbylindajoyce.com), who told me some great stories about acquiring vintage patterns from a real burlesque costumer from the old days (I'm sure she would tell you all the details if you asked her.) I got her to put something together for me last month, and it's really, really lovely.

Q: What song do you associate with burlesque and really, really like? Could you explain why it appeals to you?

I love horns. Clichés be damned, "The Stripper" really is THE song that screams burlesque to me. The horns sweep in like a woman in a beaded dress with a giant feather headdress, then you're hit with the dirty kick drums that just beg for a big hip bump or two.

That said, a song like that might not work for my personal interpretation of burlesque. For my acts, I tend to gravitate towards songs with a little bit more blues in them. Blues evolved as a way to make light of bad feelings, to express oneself in song, natural as breathing. Songs with that kind of complex emotion and natural human expression really inspire me to dance and build an act around them.

If I'm putting together a classic act for an audience that might be less familiar with burlesque, I'd go for a classic Sonny Lester tune. But if I know a lot of burlesque performers and fans will be in the audience, I'll try to find more obscure gems in my collection of vintage jazz and cheesy mid-century lounge albums.

Another good place I like to look is soundtrack albums. Instrumental orchestra recordings with intrigue and a bit of sultriness are out there, you just have to find them.

Q: Who are some of your favorite burlesque performers, past or present?

I've always been blown away by Lily St. Cyr — she was so beautiful, feminine, and graceful. I also adore Sally Rand, how she made do with whatever she could come up with (is it true her legendary fan dance came about because she didn't have time to finish her costume?) and made it into something simultaneously elegant and racy, always a spectacle.

My favorites of today include Catherine D'Lish and Michelle L'Amour, for similar reasons. They both have amazing poise, graceful movements, and a delicious sense of extravagant glamour, while also being ravishingly sexy in their own unique ways.

Q: What is your favorite and most memorable burlesque moment?

After my first real burlesque performance, the graduation recital with my classmates of the Kindergarten of Burlesque in Seattle, an audience member came up to me and told me my classic burlesque act made him so nostalgic for a bygone era, he called his mother and told her all about it.

I'm not sure what his mother thought about this phone call, but the way he gushed was really inspiring. A lot of people are really nostalgic for that old-fashioned glamour and the mystique of a classic striptease. If I can touch that nerve in someone every time I perform, I think I'm doing my part to honor a bygone era and keep its memories alive.

Q: How has burlesque influenced your life? What have been both the positive and negative effects, if any?

The extreme girlishness and femininity that I get from burlesque has started bubbling into my day life, for sure. I work in the tech industry where everybody wears jeans and hoodies every day. Now I've been showing up at work in pencil skirts and heels. Before, I'd try to "fit in" more, but now I don't care. I enjoy being a girl!

There is one main negative effect on my life, which I'm trying to figure out how to deal with: I spend a lot more money, in general. Burlesque costumes are very expensive. I keep buying stuff with feathers, tassles, rhinestones, just in case I want to use them in an act someday. I'm dressing up more in my day life, so I spend more on my wardrobe.

I keep wondering how I can devote more of my time and energy towards burlesque without giving up my web designer salary to pay for it. It's really quite a conundrum and I wish I knew how the modern burlesque women who do it professionally made that leap.

Q: What's next for Sugar La Vie? Anything you have planned that you'd like your fans to know about?

I'm still just getting started, and playing it by ear. I want to put together more acts and really flesh out my vision of girlish extravagance... I'm thinking lots of pink. I'm also thinking of ways I can combine my skills in web design with my enthusiasm for burlesque and performing arts. The entrepreneurial spirit of San Francisco is starting to get to me, I keep thinking of side business ideas. Who knows if anything will ever come of it, but it's fun to daydream.

Red Hots Burlesque for Friday, February 26, 2010

The amazing Trauma Flintstone will be both host and performer at this Friday's Red Hots Burlesque! One of my favorites at last year's Cabaret Verdalet — and performing at this year's show — she's a star of countless musical theater productions, drag clubs and piano bars. Want to know more about Trauma? Visit her Wikipedia entry and her website at www.traumaflintstone.com.

Also on the bill are Barbary Coast Burlesque's Bunny Pistol, sASSy Hotbuns, Honey Lawless, The Empress, and the lady herself, Dottie Lux!

So grab yourself some barbecue on the patio, a drink from the bar, and enjoy a great start to your weekend! Cheers! ;-)

Red Hots Burlesque flier, February 26, 2010

If you have been in San Francisco for even 10 mins you know the name Trauma Flintstone. She's everywhere (and not just the street corners, although that's where I see her most) it is a rare treat and Red Hots are thrilled to have her host and perform this Friday.

And the rest of our cast reads like a invitation to a slumber party:

Bunny Pistol
sASSy Hotbuns
Honey Lawless
Dottie Lux
and
The Empress

I hear Honey Lawless is bringing a brand new number to the RHB stage and she promised it would be extra gruesome.

Hot Pink Feathers Showgirl Academy classes and Carnaval SF 2010 preparation

Ever wanted to dance down Mission Street as part of the Carnaval San Francisco Grand Parade in May? Ever wanted to dance with the Hot Pink Feathers? Now's your chance! Hot Pink Feathers' Showgirl Academy classes spring term will be starting next month, and Carnaval SF preparation packages are available.

Who are the Hot Pink Feathers? They are a World Cabaret Showgirl dance troupe. They perform locally at show such as Tuesday's In the Name of Love: Haiti Benefit & Mardi Gras Extravaganza at the Red Devil Lounge (see previous post), burlesque shows such as Friday's Hubba Hubba Revue: Mardi Gras! at the DNA Lounge, and at their own shows with Blue Bone Express at Cafe Van Kleef in Oakland on the first Saturday of every month. Check them out in action in this video montage!

Led by Carnaval SF 2008 Queen Kellita, the Hot Pink Feathers were named Best Dance Company by the San Francisco Bay Guardian in their "Best of the Bay 2008" issue. They've appeared on NBC's America's Got Talent, been featured in Margaret Cho's Sensuous Woman variety shows, and performed at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend in Las Vegas, as well as many, many stages in the Bay Area and across the country.

And, yes, this is a special time of the year for HPF. Not only is it Mardi Gras, but they'll also be preparing for the big Carnaval SF 2010 Grand Parade! If you look below, you'll see that they have a special Carnaval prep package, complete with payment plans and a raffle to help defray the costs of participating. Watch the video to see the Hot Pink Feathers in a past Carnaval SF Grand Parade!

You could be dancing down Mission Street as part of the Hot Pink Feathers! All of the class and Carnaval prep information is below. Kellita has just returned from a short sabbatical to Rio and Buenos Aires and I'm sure she's just bursting in anticipation of sharing all of the things she learned with you!

All classes will take place at The Ballet Studio in San Francisco. All of the class and Carnaval prep information is below. If you have any questions, please contact the Kellita and the Hot Pink Feathers at hotpinkfeathers@gmail.com or by calling 415-398-7673. You may also find more information about HPF at www.hotpinkfeathers.com.

Don't delay! Shake a tail feather! ;-)

Feather Fans!

I am just returned from intensive dance study in both Buenos Aires and Rio (where I got to see several samba schools process in the the sambadrome!!!) and am thrilled to get into the studio with YOU or someone you know would love to dance with us and share what I've just received!

Valentine's Day Weekend 2010: San Francisco Burlesque

Instead of listing this weekend's shows individually, I thought that I'd group them all together in one post. After all, what better way to spend an evening on Valentine's Day weekend with one's sweetheart, friends, or other loved ones than at a show featuring burlesque performers?

This Friday evening, February 12, Red Hots Burlesque will be celebrating their two year anniversary! Yes, it was in 2008 that Dottie Lux moved to San Francisco from New York and started her show here. This week, Dottie has some RHB favorite performers, including Alotta Boutté, Kentucky Fried Woman, Ruby Vixen, and also some visiting stars: Alysia Angel of Portland, and The Shanghai Pearl from Seattle. You may remember The Shanghai Pearl from the documentary, "A Wink and a Smile."

Red Hots Burlesque flier, February 12, 2010

Red Hots Burlesque Presents Happy Birthday Red Hots

It has been 2 years since Red Hots crossed the continent to bring SF a new brand of mayhem and madness! If you have been missing the past few weeks you really should kick yourself, but we'll forgive you you're family at El Rio, so go see your sisters, brothers and cousins at RHB this Friday!

This week we have so much beautiful visiting and debut talent mixed with some home town hotties and Red Hots Favorites. Don't miss this fabulous show!

Red Hots Burlesque celebrates TWO years at El Rio and they've been seeing sold out shows since the new year! Enjoy this highly acclaimed show, you know if you miss one week, you'll be kicking yourself! Freaky and filthy film reel brought to you by Val Killmore and DJ Alex BIG Cox brings you tantalizing tunage!

Alotta Boutte
Dottie Lux
Ruby Vixen
Kentucky Fried Woman
Sugarbush Lane

Very special visiting guests:
Alysia Angel, Portland
Shanghai Pearl, Seattle

!!!!! FEB 12th 730 pm @ El Rio !!!!

More about our visiting and debut performers:

Alysia Angel is lone wolf in a socialite body, a femme whisperer who flags sham-ow on the left. She is currently on tour with her series of books titled "What I Do When You're Not Looking" and really wants to come to your town too. When not writing and hustling, you can find her creeping in alleys and drinking fine whiskey at old timer bars. Alysia is not for the faint of heart.

Jukie Sunshine is San Francisco's "It Girl"!! You may have seen her lovely queer fat femme face and figure performing burlesque in SF and across the country since 2001. This cover girl has graced local mags other and Size Queen, as well as international rags Juxtapoz, Bizarre (UK) and The New Yorker! Perhaps you caught her shaking it on the boob tube on KQED's Spark! or one of her three appearances on Entertainment Tonight. Did you get an eyeful of her photographs taken by Leonard Nimoy (Google it!!)? She is an educator, activist and artist who wants you to love yourself naked in front of the mirror...jukie sunshine!

Mangos With Chili knows that queer and trans folks of color do love, sex and total disaster like none other! In this special Valentine's Day weekend production QTPOC will tell their true life stories of love, desire and disaster through music, spoken word, theater, hip hop, dance, burlesque, drag and film. Bring a trinket for the altar we'll build to the loves we've lost, known, and are praying for, and come prepared to hear truths you've never heard spoken before but always needed to.

Mangos With Chili is a Bay Area based arts organization committed to showcasing high quality performance of life saving importance by queer and trans artists of color to audiences in the Bay Area and beyond. Founded in 2006 by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha and Ms Cherry Galette, Mangos With Chili features a revolving cast of QTPOC artists and has performed to sold out houses across North America, wowing audiences in world class theaters, underground performance spaces, bars, and campus halls, with their high intensity, breathtaking performance, politics, and storytelling craft, reflecting the lives and stories of queer and trans people of color, while making art that speaks out in resistance to the daily struggles around silence, isolation, homophobia, and violence that QTPOC face.

Mangos With Chili is a fiscally sponsored project of the San Francisco based arts organization CounterPULSE, which provides space and resources for emerging artists and cultural innovators: www.counterpulse.org. Production of Whipped is supported by the Horizons Foundation, the Astraea Foundation, and the generous support of our community of donors.

Valentine's Day Weekend 2010: San Francisco BurlesqueSocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Little Minsky's Burlesque tonight, Thursday, February 11, 2010

Just a reminder that Little Minsky's is tonight at Club Deluxe in San Francisco. I don't have the full line-up, but I do know that Kellita of the Hot Pink Feathers, Lady Monster, and Sugar la Vie will be amongst the performers. It's usually a great show in a great venue, so it would be a great idea to head out to the Haight for one of San Francisco's longest-running burlesque shows!

Just remember to get there early to get a good seat or standing position! If I'm not sitting at one of the tables in front of the stage, I'll stand behind them in the bar and look through the arches. If you can find a seat at one of the tables to the left of the stage, those are primo, too, but are taken quickly.

Oh! And if you need a late night pizza fix, there's an Escape from New York Pizza at 1737 Haight Street. There aren't too many dining options nearby after 9:30pm.

Enjoy! :-)

sfBoylesque performs at PUSH Tuesday, February 9, at Infusion Lounge

A quick note that sfBoylesque will be performing at this coming Tuesday for free! Yep, it'll be PUSH Tuesday at Infusion Lounge in San Francisco.

Maximus Barnaby says, "We've nearly 40 performers scheduled to entertain you with 22 acts spread throughout 5 different shows beginning at 7:00, 8:00, 9:00, 10:00, and 11:00pm. There is absolutely no cover charge to enter this uber-swanky venue. Happy hour-priced drinks and food specials go from 6-9pm."

So there you go. Lots of entertainment for free. I haven't seen any age limits posted, but I'm guessing it's 21 and older since they have a bar. There's also a restaurant, if you get hungry. Yummy! Looks superfun! :-D

Swinging Chinatown: The Golden Age of Chinese Nightclubs' Opening Gala is Thursday, February 11, 2010

I always love learning about the history of things, and burlesque is no different. So when I received word that there would be an exhibit about Chinese nightclubs in San Francisco in days of yore, I couldn't resist posting about it!

For the next two weekends, you can learn about Noel Toy Young, the "Chinese Sally Rand." Or Paul Wing, the "Chinese Fred Astaire." You'll also be able to view photographs, costumes, and other items.

The exhibit is open on the weekends of February 12 and 19, and it will be at the Old Mint. Here are all of the details:

Swinging Chinatown Exhibit
Friday February 12 to Monday, February 15, 2010
Friday February 19 to Sunday, February 21, 2010
12 Noon to 5 PM
The Old Mint
88 Fifth Street
San Francisco

Presented in collaboration with the Chinese Historical Society of America.

From the late 1930s to the early 1960s, Chinese nightclubs flourished in San Francisco's Chinatown. Clubs like the Chinese Skyroom, the Shangri-La, and the Forbidden City, were the first - and in those days the only - venues for talented Asian performers.

Legs - Swinging Chinatown Exhibit

Swinging Chinatown brings back to life a long-neglected slice of Asian-American history. The exhibit will feature over 100 vintage photographs, dancer Ellen Chin's costumes and gold dancing shoes, Tony Wing's tap shoes, and menus, napkins and other mementos from several famous nightclubs. Immerse yourself in a bygone era, when celebrities and visitors of all stripes were entertained by Larry Ching, "the Chinese Frank Sinatra;" Noel Toy Young, "the Chinese Sally Rand;" and Paul Wing, the "Chinese Fred Astaire." The exhibit will feature vintage photographs, costumes, dancing shoes, menus, napkins and other mementos from famous nightclubs. Swinging Chinatown is co-curated by SFMHS associate curator Kristin Morris and historian Trina Robbins, author of Forbidden City: The Golden Age of Chinese Nightclubs.

Tickets: $5 SFMHS and CHSA members, $10 non-members, $3 for students

On Thursday, February 11, there will be an opening night gala event at the Old Mint. Ben Fong-Torres the rock journalist will emcee, and a troupe of former nightclub dancers, the Grant Avenue Follies, will perform. Information about the gala and some repeat information about the exhibit is below:

The San Francisco Museum and Historical Society (SFMHS) in collaboration with the Chinese Historical Society of America (CHSA) presents Swinging Chinatown: The Golden Age of Chinese Nightclubs.

This rare exhibit features vintage photographs, costumes and memorabilia of the exciting and glamorous days of the Chinese American nightclub scene.

From Lucha VaVOOM to San Francisco with love this Valentine's Day weekend!

This coming Friday, Lucha VaVOOM returns to brings their brand of Sexo y Violencia to San Francisco for Valentine's Day weekend! All with a dash of love! Yes, it's Lucha VaVOOM: From Lucha with Love at the Fillmore on Friday, February 12, starting at 9:00pm.

Lucha VaVOOM comes to the San Francisco Bay Area several times a year. If you've never been, Lucha VaVOOM (or LVV) is a mixture of Mexican Lucha Libre wrestling with burlesque. Add in the live commentary of a couple of comedians, and you've got a one-of-a-kind evening of zany sexiness that can't be matched. I mean, where else can you see mini chicken wrestlers jumping off of balconies and being escorted by striptease artists?

LVV was created in 2002 by Rita D'Albert and Liz Fairbairn in Los Angeles. Since then, they've also taken their show on the road to Chicago and New York. It should be noted that their upcoming shows this week at the Mayan Theater in Los Angeles have sold out!

This time around, LVV is bringing north burlesque performers Carolina Cerasola, Harvest Moon, Lux LaCroix, Lucy Fur, Karis, Roky Roulette, and Ursulina. You may remember Carolina Cerasola from last year's Superstars of Dance on NBC. If not, here's a clip from that show!

Hold on! You don't want to forget about the wrestling! Not only will you see the very sexy wrestler Hector Garza, Dirty Sanchez, and "oily" Joey Ryan, but the Chickens are back! Plus see the debut of the Mini Kissing Bandit! And perhaps a wrestler will strip for you, too...

But wait a minute. That's still not all! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, Tom Kenny of Spongebob Squarepants and Mr. Show fame will be back as one of the comedic announcers! That just about completes a fantastic line-up that will leave you breathless. Oh my!

So grab your sweetheart, friends, family, and countrymen and head on over to the Fillmore this Friday, February 12, for an evening of laughs, sexiness, and unique sights. Tickets are available at the door (if available) and in advance at LiveNation.com. So get your tickets now for an event that you and your sweetie won't forget!

Oh! And if you're going solo, you may just meet someone special at the show! ;-)

Sexo y Violencia!

Mexican Masked Wrestling + Burlesque + Comedy = Lucha VaVOOM

Lucha VaVOOM is a non-stop, action-packed scream-a-thon, where Mexican Masked wrestlers flip and fly, performing breathtaking acrobatic feats. It’s good vs. evil played out in a one fall, Lucha Libre exhibition-style match for maximum enjoyment.

In between matches, the finest, handpicked burlesque acts from around the world astound us; at Lucha VaVOOM, we like a little sexo with our violencia. Raucous aerial acts, Pogo-stick peelers, hula-hoop hotties; we’ve got it all.

But wait there’s more! Our color commentary is handled by comedians Tom Kenny, Dana Gould and Blaine Capatch. In the past, other guest commentators have included Fred Armisen, Brian Poussein, Patton Oswalt, Jeffrey Ross, Chris Hardwick and Bobcat Goldthwait.
