Legs Malone to perform at Monday's Hubba Hubba Revue show in Oakland

If you've missed Legs Malone at the other stops on her West Coast tour, you'll have one more chance to catch this dynamic, sexy, and yes, leggy, New York City-based performer this Monday night, January 31, at the Hubba Hubba Revue show at the Uptown Club in Oakland!

But there's more! For the very same five dollar cover, you'll get to see another visiting performer, Ms. Louisa of Minneapolis. And from New Orleans, Dorian Faust. And they haven't forgotten to include one of the Bay Area's own, Mynx d'Meanor of Fishnet Follies!

And putting the variety in the variety part of the show, it'll be magician Hernan Cortez and comedian Dustin Sklavos! No, it's not the Hernan Cortez who was a Spanish conquistador who led an expedition that caused the fall of the Aztec Empire. It is, it should be quite the magic show! And there will be music from The Honeybirds, too!

The Uptown Club is located at 1528 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland (map), and the doors open at 9:00 p.m., and the show starts at 10:15. It's a 21 and older venue, so remember to bring your identification to get in!

The Edwardian Ball: A Newbie's Guide

The Edwardian Ball is here, and I don't have a thing to wear...

That's a common phrase heard in certain circles this time of year in San Francisco. But what IS the Edwardian Ball, really? And what can you expect if you attend?

For the five or so years since I've been involved with burlesque, I've heard about the Ball. And for the past couple of two years I've said that I would attend the Edwardian Ball "next year." Well, next year has arrived, and I'm all set to go. And I must say that I've become quite fascinated by the event.

As it's in my nature to prepare as much as possible for an event of such magnitude, I've researched the Ball by reading various online articles, as well as by talking to some of the people in the burlesque community who have been to the Ball in past years or who are actively participating in it this year.

I will probably edit this post after this weekend, but while the research is still fresh in my mind I'll post it now. And who knows? It may help those of you who are going for the first time this year.

What is the Edwardian Ball?

The Edwardian Ball is a celebration of the famed American writer and artist Edward Gorey. This year, there will be performances based on his work, "The Eleventh Episode," which actually was written under his pseudonym, Raddory Gewe. He was fond of anagrams.

The show is presented by the Vau de Vire Society and Paradox Media. Vau de Vire is behind such events as the Bohemian Carnival, and they've performed with Primus and the Dresden Dolls, among many others. They're one of the Bay Area's premier avant-garde circus and dance companies.

This year, the Ball in San Francisco will consist of two evenings, Friday and Saturday, January 21 and 22. On Friday, it take the form of the Edwardian World's Faire, which features the Edwardian Midway and an exposition of steam machinery by Kinetic Steam Works. There will also be live music, dancing, a fashion show, circus and vaudeville acts, and more. On Saturday, it will the Edwardian Ball which will feature a performance of "The Eleventh Episode," with original music and choreography by Rosin Coven and the Vau de Vire Society. There will also be music (by "Belle of the Ball", Jill Tracy, see the video below), and performances by Fou Fou HA!, Le Cancan Bijou and more. Both days will feature ballroom dancing, a vendor bazaar and gaming parlour, a hall of fine arts, and cabinets of curiosity and natural wonders.

Edwardian Ball Fashion and Costumes

This is the issue at the forefront of most attendees' minds. What the do you wear? After all, it is a costume party/dance. And some of the most creative designers and artists around will be in attendance! It seems that much of the appeal of the Ball is to admire all of the creative and wonderful costumes, not to mention to wear one.

So how does one dress? Edwardian Ball fashion is a mash-up of Victorian, Edwardian, steampunk, goth, and pretty much anything else you can imagine. One of the tenets of the event is that historical accuracy is not emphasized, unlike some of the other costume events in the Bay Area. The focus is more on creativity.

For some, preparations start right after the last Ball ended. There is research into fashion history. Various steampunk characters are examined and imagined. Patterns are drawn up and materials are searched for online and in small shops around the area. These attendees are the ones you see pictures of when you search for "Edwardian Ball photos." Like the fellow to the left.

Some examples of what has been worn in the past may be found at SFWeekly.com, edwardianball.com, or on Neil Girling's Flickr account.

If you're into costuming, this is an opportunity for you to let it all hang out, so to speak. Says Miz Margo (aka burlesque performer The Flying Fox), one of the DJs at the Ball this weekend, "DRESS UP!! Nothing is 'too much'. Go dark, surreal, vintage, a charachter out of a Gorey story (human or not!), these days 'steampunk' flies as well..."

Although creating and wearing an elaborate costume is wonderful and encouraged, it's not absolutely necessary. I talked with Anna Q, the vendor coordinator, production assistant, social media director, and secret weapon of the Edwardian Ball, about costuming. "That's the one thing people get hung up about," she said. "But in reality, once you're there, people don't pay that much attention. People hear the word 'ball' and think that they need have to have an elaborate costume, but people shouldn't let that stop them from coming."

You can wear something nice and dressy. For women, something as a simple as a little black dress with accessories will do. 7x7 Magazine has posted its suggestion for what a woman could wear to this year's Ball. As you can see, it's a variation on the little black dress, with some accessories to give it that turn-of-the-century look.

For men, something along the lines of formalwear will do. RJ Johnson of Burlesque Photo of the Day suggested a tuxedo shirt over black slacks would work. If you can find the rest of the tuxedo, so much the better.

If you need some accessories to give your outfit more of a steampunk/goth/Victorian/Edwardian/Goreyan look, you can always find some at the Edwardian Ball's vendor marketplace. In addition to being open during the Ball, it's also free and open to the public noon until 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.

And where else would you find clothing and accessories to wear to the Ball if you don't already have them? One option is to rent from a costume store such as CostumeParty! or Costumes on Haight in San Francisco. I found a Victorian suit with tails at Debbie Lyn's Costumes in Sunnyvale.

Another option is to buy your costume, which you may want to do if you're planning to attend other similar events. Edwardianball.com has a list of places in San Francisco and Oakland that specialize in Victorian and Edwardian era clothing.

How much will your costume cost? If you want an entire costume, it could cost you hundreds of dollars even if you rent and buy some accessories. My suit rental plus a top hat and bow tie was a bargain at $60.00. But I will probably purchase a few accessories at the Ball, which will probably put the bill at over $100.00. I imagine that some people spend over $1,000.00, based on the elaborateness of their costumes.

Pre-Show Preparations

Besides preparing your costume, there are a few things that you should to. The first is to obtain Edwardian Ball tickets from a trusted source, like edwardianball.com or from Dark Garden (321 Linden, SF) or Distractions (1552 Haight, SF) You don't want to be in a situation where you've put together your attire for the event, then find out when you get to the Ball that it is sold out!

If you're coming from outside of the City, do you want to obtain lodging that is near to the ballroom? It's probably less hectic to have a room where you can put on your costume and crash after the Ball is over. But if you obtain a hotel room, that would inflate your budget. A more frugal approach would be to crash with a friend who lives nearby, and gift him or her with a trinket from the Ball as a thank you gift.

Navigating the Event

I've been told by several people that the lines to get into the Edwardian Ball at the Regency Ballroom are ginormous! So it's probably a good idea to get there very early. You should probably plan to arrive at least an hour before the time you want to get into the Ball (i.e., arrive at 7:00 if you want to be in by 8:00).

And since the Ball will be well-attended, there will probably be lines for concessions. It would probably be a good idea to get food and drink before you arrive at the Regency Center (the Regency Ballroom is in the Regency Center). You wouldn't want to spend most of the night in lines or suffer while standing in line waiting to get in. A glance at Google Earth shows that there are quite a few restaurants and lounges around the area. So no matter what your budget and palate, there's sure to be something to satisfy your thirst and hunger.

Once you're in, be sure to visit all of the areas of the venue. The Regency Center is a large building with several levels and various rooms. Kingfish of the Hubba Hubba Revue will be the emcee for the Edwardian World's Faire on Friday evening, and he offers this advice for those new to the Edwardian Ball. "The event is *huge* and if you don't move around you will definitely miss stuff. The exhibits on Friday, World's Faire night, are always awesome (I particularly like the operating steam engines from Kinetic Steam Works) and there are rooms and rooms of vendors."

And, like burlesque shows, the Edwardian Ball is a social event. Lots of people attend in groups, and since the Ball attracts like-minded folks from the goth, steampunk, burlesque, and other communities, many people will know a good number of the other attendees.

If you're new to the Ball and don't know many of the other guests, don't despair! Resolve to meet other guests perhaps while waiting in one of the lines. One good strategy to meet people was suggested by RJ Johnson, who said, "Mingling down in the vendor's area is a lot of fun; don't just park yourself in front of the stage or up in the balcony. Be sociable; complimenting folks on their finery is a great way to strike up a conversation if you are a bit shy at such things."

And if you're also a photographer like he is, RJ suggested taking some business card with the web address of where people can find the photos that you take of them.

The Big Picture

Whatever you do, whoever you go as, there's one thing that you need to do: Have fun! It seems pretty common for people to feel pressure and panic about their costumes before the event. In the big picture, however, I don't think anyone will notice that a bow tie is really just a shade off from being perfect for a suit. The main thing is to resolve to have fun, and then to make it so!

If you have any suggestions, questions, or comments about this post, please feel free to leave a comment below.

March 18th, 7:30pm El Rio (3158 Mission Street SF, CA)- School of Shimmy Showcase! Your chance to sh-sh-shake it on stage!

One of the best ways to figure out if you want to take a class with an instructor is to watch her perform. And every Friday evening, Dottie Lux brings Red Hots Burlesque to El Rio. Sometimes she'll have some of her S.O.S. graduates perform. Often, though, she'll shake and shimmy herself. And you'll get to see a lot of the Bay Area's and the world's best performers, too!

This week, Dottie welcomes several visiting performers to the El Rio stage. Boo Boo Darlin' of Richmond, Virginia, and former Little Minsky's co-producer and SF resident The Flying Fox of New York City! Incidentally, The Flying Fox is also known as Miz Margo, and she'll be one of the DJs at the Edwardian Ball this weekend.

Also performing will be Ginger Murray, Kitty Von Quim, and Patricia Misery!

Naked Girls Reading San Francisco: Dr. Seuss! Today, Thursday, January 20SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

San Francisco Bay Area burlesque for January 19 to 25, 2011

It's the week of the Edwardian Ball and World's Faire, so it's not surprising that there aren't lots of shows scheduled this week. It takes a lot of time to get those costumes prepared!

On Friday night, Kingfish of the Hubba Hubba Revue will be hosting the Edwardian World's Faire. On Saturday night, one of the DJs will be Miz Margo (aka The Flying Fox). If you go this weekend, you'll probably see a number of burlesque performers and fans at the Regency Ballroom.

That's not to say that it's the only thing happening this week. Oh no! On Thursday, Lady Monster presents Naked Girls Reading San Francisco: Dr. Seuss! See the regular cast members and special guest Ophelia Coeur de Noir read selections from Dr. Seuss selections. And I found the quote in the event description below from "One Fish, Two Fish." Seemed appropriate!

Barbary Coast Burlesque returns to the Impala on Sunday, and of course Red Hots Burlesque happens on Friday evening. The Stripping Granny has been elevated to special guest star for Monday night's Hubba Hubba Revue show at the Uptown in Oakland. She's been quite the sensation at various burlesque shows recently!

So get your costumes ready, and go forth to the Edwardian Ball and cosplay! Then patronize your favorite burlesque shows!

  • Thursday, January 20: Naked Girls Reading Dr. Seuss at Viracocha in San Francisco, 998 Valencia Street (map). "If you never did, you should. These things are fun, and fun is good." With special guest Ophelia Coeur de Noir. Doors at 8:00pm, show at 8:30. Front row seats are $20.00. General admission is $15.00. Advance tickets at ngrsf.eventbrite.com. 18+.

  • Friday, January 21: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco, 3158 Mission Street (map). Red Hots is San Francisco's only weekly burlesque show! • Also Friday and Saturday, January 22: The Edwardian Ball and World's Faire at the Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, 1300 Van Ness Avenue (map). Join Paradox Media and Vau de Vire for the eleventh Edwardian Ball and World's Faire. This year's Ball is based around Edward Gorey's “The Eleventh Episode.” This “quintessential must-never-miss event of the year” presents an elegant, turn of the century celebration of music, theatre, circus arts, bands, DJs, ballroom dance, fashion, technology and, of course, the ominous art and stories of beloved author and illustrator Edward Gorey. Hosted by Edwardian Ball co-creators Rosin Coven and Vau de Vire Society, the nights promise an unforgettable blend of audience participation and performance with darkness, humor, and style in a stunning historic venue. The event also features “Belle of the Ball” Jill Tracy, DJs Miz Margo, Delachaux, and GlobalRuckus, Dark Garden Corsetry, Fou Fou HA!, Gomorran Social Aid & Pleasure Club, Flynn Creek Circus, Vima Vice Squad, ballroom dancing, antique portrait studio, authentic tea parlor, extensive vendor bazaar, participatory delights and distractions, and a madhouse slapdashery of costumery by all the attendees. Costumed attire is highly encouraged -- all in attendance are invited to return to a time of gentility by creating characters for the occasion. Friday is the Edwardian World's Faire, which runs from 8pm to 2am. Tickets $28.00 to $75.00. Saturday is the Edwardian Ball, which runs from 8pm. to 2am. Tickets are $38.00 to $85.00. 3rd Annual Forbidden Island Zombie Night

You fled from the scattered, shambling undead that came staggering up to your farmhouse. Armed only with a cricket bat, you managed to evade the ravening revenants roving in the streets. You held up for a while in a shopping mall with some other survivors, only to face slow starvation. Making a break for it, you braved hordes of hungry ghouls in a frantic scramble to the marina. A boat! The open sea! Your only hope!

Twenty-...eight days later, delirious from thirst, you finally spy a speck of land on the horizon. An island! Salvation! Washing up on the mysterious beach, you cast about for a fruity drink when a chorus of ghastly moans rises from just beyond the treeline.

Oh no! You’ve landed on FORBIDDEN ZOMBIE ISLAND!

Sunday, January 16th, from 5 pm - 11 pm, Zombie Night returns for it's 3rd Annual installment to Forbidden Island. No Cover. 21+.

* Hula like a ghoul-a to the haunting tunes spun by DJ Fitz!

* Test out your cranial capacity before the hordes get your brains with an all new zombie trivia contest.

* Guests arriving in zombie makeup will receive a free special drink!

** And, as an extra special treat, a very undead burlesque performance by Original Sin!

Brought to you by those big, tasty brains at Forbidden Island. It promises to be an evening of infectious good fun!

And remember, kids: “In the brain and not the chest, rum shots are the very best.”

Red Hots Burlesque this week: Shows and a debate

Dottie Lux and Red Hots Burlesque have a couple of events coming up in the next two days.

At 7:30 p.m. tonight, Dottie will be participating in a debate at the Jellyfish Gallery in San Francisco, 1286 Folsom Street. At a Red Hots Burlesque show at the Saturn Cafe in Berkeley last November, Spy Girl Friday (aka Spy Emerson) had her art work displayed in the Space Lounge. Someone complained that the art was sexist. The cafe asked Spy to take the art down, then reversed their decision. Tonight's debate about whether Spy's art is sexist with Dottie and "Kelly" the Singing Cowboy will be moderated by Dr. Hal. The art work has been remounted, so you can decide for yourself. The debate is free, but the burlesque show following at 9:00 p.m. with Delilah, Shredder, and probably Dottie and Spy will be $10.00.

UPL Debate flier, January 13, 2011

On Friday, January 14, Red Hots Burlesque will feature visiting burlesque performer The Shanghai Pearl, as well as Delilah and the Bay Area's very own Stripping Granny (aka Lynn Ruth Miller,"Alzheimers Alzheimers Cha Cha Cha"). The show starts at 7:30 p.m. at El Rio in San Francisco, and the cover is on a slinging (or sliding) scale from $5.00 to $10.00. Check out all of the show details below!

San Francisco Bay Area burlesque for January 12 to 18, 2011

After a slow-down in shows for the holidays, things are revving right back up this week with a bevy of shows to please your burlesque palate.

The Hubba Hubba Revue: Soviet Union show will be happening this week. Because Kingfish, the co-emcee and producer of the show, will be emceeing the Edwardian Ball's World's Faire on Friday, January 21, the show was scheduled for this Friday instead of its usual third-Friday slot. Not to mention that many of the cast, crew, and audience will probably be in attendance at the Edwardian Ball, which is one of the big events of the year for the burlesque community.

Internationally-renowned burlesque star The Shanghai Pearl of Seattle and Ms. Luisa of Minneapolis are both visiting the Bay Area this week, and they'll be performing at Little Minsky's on Thursday and Hubba Hubba Revue: Soviet Union on Friday. There will be an interesting debate on Thursday at the Jellyfish Gallery about whether Spy Emerson's (aka Spy Girl Friday) artwork for her exhibit "Books from the Underground Public Library" is sexist. It seems there was a controversy (see the Facebook thread) when the her work was exhibited late last year at the Saturn Cafe in Berkeley in conjunction with a Red Hots Burlesque show there. Dottie Lux of Red Hots Burlesque and "Kelley" The Singing Cowboy will be guest speakers, and Dr. Hal Robins of the Church of the SubGenius will be moderator. The debate will be followed by a burlesque show featuring Delilah and Shredder.

Mynx d'Meanor of Fishnet Follies will be performing in one of SF Sketchfest's shows on Saturday, "Delocated Witness Protection Program Variety Hour." She'll be in the show with Will Forte, Kristen Schaal, and other comedians, actors, and entertainers! It looks like a fun evening at Cobb's Comedy Club.
