September 2010 San Francisco area burlesque classes

Here are the listings of the September class schedules of the three most well-known burlesque schools in the Bay Area. Fishnet Follies School of Classic Burlesque hasn't issued a fall class schedule yet, but you may visit fishnetfollies.com to get the latest class information.

There are some student ratings and comments at Yelp, if you'd like to see them. The following three schools are at the top of the list.

Bombshell Betty's Burlesquercise

Intro to Burlesquercise Mini-Session

Been looking for a sexy workout or just want more excitement in your life? Come join in on the fun with this special introductory series. In addition to the unique bump-and-grind warmup and workout that Burlesquercise is famous for, you will learn the burlesque strut, how to create your own retro style dance moves and choreography, how to work a boa, twirl tassels (no nudity required) and more! You'll also learn the choreography... for the dance numbers most often performed by "Bombshell Betty's Burlesqueteers," so pull your favorite lingerie out of hiding in the top drawer and let's shake it... with Burlesquercise!

Burlesquercise Intensive: Breaking Into the Bump and Grind

In this 12-week intensive, you will learn everything you need to know to get started in burlesque! This course presents ALL the skills and techniques needed for effective burlesque performance in just ONE series. Additional specialty subjects are offered in shorter series, but this will be the most important course to take to get a solid basis for burlesque! By the time you finish this course, you will have a strong foundation i...n burlesque movement, a solid stage persona, and the ability to fully engage your audience while telling your story through burlesque striptease. You'll know secrets to taking it off gracefully without tripping on your frilly nothings, how to incorporate props into your act (including using your clothing as props and twirling nipple tassels), you'll have created signature moves, learned how to invent your own dance moves for the stage, and so much more!

Want to stand out from the crowd? Go from "wanna-be" to "gotta-see" in only 12 weeks!

This course also covers:

* DIY "no sew" costume design
* Makeup for stage
* Finding and booking gigs
* Marketing and promotional basics

Red Hots Burlesque School of Shimmy

Sept 14th 7-9pm Burlesque 201 Getting an act together: Students are encouraged to come with an act or character in mind. We will develop personas and discuss song choice, prop use, costume selection and techniques for coming up with acts. This class will include lecture and group work.

Sept 25th 4pm-6pm as a part of the Russian River Womens Weekend Burlesque 101: In this two-hour workshop, students will learn the history of burlesque, how to create a persona and basic choreography. As well as learning to build your burlesque attitude; feel great about your body, and an open discussion about increased confidence and positive thinking. Sept 26th 12-2pm as a part of the Russian River Womens Weekend Pastie Making and Tassel Twirling: How do we do it?! Impress and amaze with the art of tassel twirling. In the first hour we will go over the history of tassel twirling and you will make your very own pair of pasties with tassels. No materials fees. Supplies will be provided, but if you have a pair of scissors and/or a hot glue gun; bring it! The second hour of class will teach you those much desired and sought out moves to get those tatas-a-twirlin'! We will go over several different methods and find which option works best for you. Be prepared to wear pasties on your body. The class is a safe and respectful environment where students should feel free to toss their inhabitions aside. Sept 28th 7-9pm Burlesque 202 MAKE IT YOU!:Students are encouraged to come with an act or character in mind. We will workshop ideas, and discuss the addition of plot line and telling a story with out words. We will continue to have group exercises and workshopping to include full range of creativity in adapting the written word, pop culture and mainstream media as influences on our burlesque pieces.


Classes at El Rio. Located at 3158 Mission St., San Francisco. In the back room past the bar. Unless otherwise noted. Space is limited and reservations are appreciated and encouraged.

All classes are open to students of any age or gender who want to shake it on stage or in the bedroom. No previous dance or performance experience is required. No deposit needed for class, however space is very limited and reservations are strongly encouraged. To reserve a spot email: redhotsburlesque@gmail.com with S.O.S. in the subject line. State which class(es) you are interested in and don't forget inquire about discounted rates! All classes are $30.

If you would like to perform at the School of Shimmy Showcase Burlesque 101, 201 and Finshing Touches are mandatory classes. The Fall Showcase will take place on October 15th at 7:30 pm at El Rio as part of the famed weekly show, Red Hots Burlesque.
