Stimulus Package Benefit Show on Thursday, July 2, 2009

Join Bombshell Betty and Fromagique as they put on a show to help the SF Bay Area performers who are struggling to make ends meet during this deep recession. This Thursday, there will be plenty of burlesque and musical entertainment, plus the first 100 guests will receive a free gift bag from Whole Foods. You could use them to hold the rotten tomatoes that MC Randy is inviting you to bring to throw at him! Ha ha!

$timulus Package Benefit Show

Raffle, Catering, Free Whole Foods Gift Bags, Vendors, Go-Go, Burlesque, Comedy, Dancing, Variety, and more!

The economy is tough and everyone knows people that have been having a hard time making ends meet. 100% of the door money, tips for catering, raffle money, and donations will be donated to local SF Bay Area performers that are having just that same trouble. Almost all of the performers are donating their talents for this show. Last time we raised $600+ to benefit an injured performer. This time we are hoping to raise $1,500.

The first 100 guests will get a gift bag from Whole Foods who has also generously agreed to match a % of the funds raised in Whole Foods gift cards so come out and help us get every penny we can for out-of-work, recently-laid-off, under-employed actors/dancers/comedians/musicians/variety performers! All beneficiaries will receive gift cards to whole foods with a guide to "buying on a budget" at Whole Foods.

FREE catering provided by:
Sweet Petite Baking! All tips will be donated to the benefit.

Joshua Ellingson art exhibit with Kitten on the Keys (and chocolate!) on Friday, June 26, 2009

Heading on out for the Upper-Haight Art Stroll? Make sure to stop on by Coco-luxe Confections from 5 to 8pm. The artwork of Joshua Ellingson featuring Kitten on the Keys will be on display. She'll also perform live! And it's all free. Plus, from this Coco-luxe ad, it looks like there will be samples of chocolate available. :-P

Haight Street Art Stroll Co Co Luxe Presents: Joshua Ellingson and Kitten on the Keys

Date: Friday, June 26, 2009
Time: 5:00pm - 9:00pm
Location: Coco-luxe Confections (www.coco-luxe.com)
Street: 1673 Haight St.
City/Town: San Francisco, CA

We are so lucky to host artist Josh Ellingson and my favorite frisky feline Kitten On The Keys for this months Art Stroll.

Josh Ellingson lives and works as an illustrator in San Francisco, California. He has contributed artwork to popular publications and websites worldwide and worked with clients ranging from toy makers to tequila companies.

In addition to his illustration and design business, Josh Ellingson is the director for The Local 303, a studio/collective of illustrators and designers in San Francisco, California. The Local 303 provides a professional working environment as well as a space for collaboration, critique and art exhibition. Josh Ellingson also contributes editorial writing and reviews to Hi-Fructose, a contemporary art and culture magazine.

Known as Kitten on The Keys, Suzanne Ramsey is a firkeytoodlin' frisky feline galloping with uber kittitude. As seen on HBO, E! , IFC, Queer TV , MTV, Bravo, and other media outlets, she embodies the spirit and style of those days of decadence gone by. Pianist and chanteuse, expect a racy ragtime romp when this little kitty sharpens her claws on a meow mix medley of mad cap gems of yesteryear with a naughty whimsical edge.

This internationally known versatile comedic performer MC's , sings, dances, tickles her ivories, plays the ukulele and accordion in gorgeous getups! She's a little Cabaret, Burlesque, and Vaudeville all in one! Her charming voice channels a saucy Betty Boop coo to a gritty Mae West ommph! Clever, Kinky, and Cute!

From Tin Pan Alley, Classical, Broadway, Power ballads, remakes of punk classics, and her original "punky cabaret" ditties, this little kitty puts on one heck of a live show! She lists her Fave female role models as Alice Cooper, Freddie Mercury, and Liberace!
http://www.suzanneramsey.net/

These two talented artists have been collaborating for 6 years now! Check out Josh's case study of Kitten at:
http://www.joshuaellingson.com/blog/2008/10/27/case-study-kitten-on-the-keys.html

Come on out and join us. We'll be serving chocolate treats all night!

Trans March and After Parties on Friday, June 26, 2009

It's time for Trans March 2009 (www.transmarch.org)! Not only is there the March itself, but there'll be after parties, too! And where there are parties, you'll find burlesquers!

The Trans March starts at Dolores Park in San Francisco. From 3pm until 7, there will be a "See and Be Seen" event. Then at 7, the March starts from Dolores Park, down 19th Street, makes a right on Valencia, then ends at 26th Street. (www.transmarch.org/route).

Starting at about 8pm at El Rio (www.elriosf.com), 3158 Mission Street, there will be the official after party. Entertainers will include performers seen at burlesque events such as Charleston Chu & Thisway/Thatway, King TuffNStuff, plus many others! Cover at the after party will be on a sliding scale from $5-50, but no one will be turned away for lack of funds. But you will be turned away if you are under 21, as all events at El Rio are 21 and older.

Not only will there be an after party at El Rio, but Red Hots Burlesque (www.redhotsburlesque.com) is also on the schedule! For the usual $5-10, you can catch Dottie Lux's weekly show in the room off of the patio in back. I haven't received the lineup yet, but the only week that I can remember when there wasn't an RHB show was after Thanksgiving last year when El Rio was closed!

If that's not enough activity for ya, there's also The Bearded Lady's Trans March Freakshow! Yes, Amelia Mae Paradise brings you an evening of drag and burlesque to quench your wants and needs for entertainment post-March. And it'll all be at the Elbo Room starting at 9pm. How convenient! Mangos With Chili: the floating cabaret of QTPOC bliss, dreams, sweats, sweets and nightmares is a Bay Area based arts organization committed to showcasing high quality work of life saving importance by queer and trans artists of color to audiences in the Bay Area and beyond. Founded by writer and spoken word artist Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha and dancer, choreographer, and burlesque artist Ms Cherry Galette, Mangos with Chili began as an annual touring cabaret of queer and trans people of color performance artists, and now presents year round productions in the Bay Area in addition to our annual touring cabaret.

The troupe has performed to sold out houses across North America, wowing audiences in world class theaters, underground performance spaces, bars, community venues and campus halls with their hot, high intensity, and breathtaking performance, politics, and craft, reflecting the lives and stories of queer and trans people of color and speaking out in resistance to the daily struggles around silence, isolation, homophobia, and violence that QTPOC face.

Mangos with Chili is a fiscally sponsored project of CounterPulse. Production of QPOCalypse Now! is made possible by the generous support of the Horizons Foundation, the Queer Cultural Center, the San Francisco Foundation, the San Francisco Arts Commission, and the generous support of our community of donors.

Red Hots Burlesque for Friday, June 19, 2009

One of my favorite acts from this year's Cabaret Verdalet was Trauma Flintstone, who proceeded to add new dimensions to the act of "stripping." More than clothes came off, and more than a physical body was revealed....

Now Trauma is appearing on the Red Hots Burlesque stage as a host for the first time! Plus, see Zelda Du Jour make her RHB debut in a duet with Kentucky Fried Woman! And there'll be lots more. Ya can't have a more "funner" happy hour than the award-winning one at El Rio!

Red Hots Burlesque! presents *The Traumatic Tales of Trauma Flintstone*

Please come to "The Hottest Happy Hour in the Bay" for a very special evening with a first time host to the Red Hots stage. We're packing the dressing room so it's up to you to pack the house. We're honored to have Trauma Flintstone-- "the drag queen you can take home to mom"-- guiding you through the gaggle of gams and team of tatas! There is another debut, please welcome the very fabulous Zelda Du Jour--in a duet with Kentucky Fried Woman-- to the Red Hots stage for the very first time. She is joined by some of our favorites: Lady Monster, Bunny Pistol, Ferosha Titties and picking up what we put down...Kitty Von Quimm.

The Show also includes a screening of filthy and freaky film footage brought to you by Val Killmore, Grab a drink, some *free* Oysters and BBQ at El Rio's famous happy hour (Recently voted "THE BEST OF THE BAY" by the Guardian) and watch us twitch and twatch!

Hey kids! Step right up and catch the circus sideshow! Join Kingfish and Eddie as they guide the audience through the amazing sights and sounds of the sexy dancers and the humorous funny people. Yay for the sexy and funny people!

Serendipitously enough, I'm listening to a podcast with photographer/writer/publisher Dale Rio (www.dalerio.com) as I'm typing this. And her first exposure to burlesque was when she became interested in sideshows in New York. It's always fascinating to see all the connections between so many of these forms of artistic expression!

San Francisco area burlesque for the week of June 15, 2009

Well, how about that? It's almost time for SF Pride 2009! And some of the celebratory events are starting to kick off. There was Spookshow A-Go-Go: Lezbo A-Go-Go this past Sunday, and there'll be Diva Dan's Wicked Gorgeous Pride Celebration this Friday.

And it looks like there will be lots of shows to choose from this week, especially on Friday! In addition to the Hubba Hubba Revue "Big Show," there's the aforementioned Diva Dan's Wicked Gorgeous Pride Celebration, Red Hots Burlesque with special host Trauma Flintstone, and Cirque Noir Encore! The latter show may also be seen on Saturday.

Hmm. Looking through the lineup for HHR: Sideshow!, I see that Key West Burlesque will be special guests! Tatah DuJour was one of the contestants for Reigning Queen of Burlesque at this year's Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend. She had this intriguing "Caveman" act in which she interacted with actors in caveman garb on a screen behind her. I wonder if she'll reprise that act?

One of the performers I got to know a little better at this year's Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend is Mynx d'Meanor (mynxdmeanor.com). Now she's back in San Francisco and she'll be performing this Monday at Uptown Hubba Hubba with Bombshell Betty and Fromagique! See her and the Burlesqueteers along with your buddies Kingfish and Eddie.

Cirque Noir Aerial Burlesque tonight and next weekend, June 19 and 20, 2009

I'm always on the lookout for new burlesque events, and a reader named Lisa emailed me today that Cirque Noir Aerial Burlesque will be performing tonight, June 13, and next weekend, June 19 and 20 at 8pm. This apparently is an encore performace of shows they had in April.

I found an article by SFGate.com's Trey Bundy, which describes the performance artists' preparation for the show. He writes, "Their new show combines a New Orleans-style masquerade ball with cheeky burlesque and modern aerial dance broken into 10 vignettes."

Here are the details:

It's lovely ladies on bikes this Monday at Dr. Sketchy's! Alice Stribling, Jessica Meek and Ellen Van den Bergh will model for you with their bicycles. There will be a tribute to the band Queen and the song, "Bicycle Race." Plus, it seems like they'll be letting you sell the drawings that you create during the workshop. Woot! Also...
As always our sponsor Baby Tattoo Books is providing beautifully printed books which we will give away as prizes for each month's drawing contest.

She told me at Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend in Vegas that though she'll cover other topics, much of her show will be burlesque-oriented. For her premiere show this Saturday, she'll have Dottie Lux and Val Killmore as her guests!

I'm so excited for her!

Here is the show announcement from her blog at ladymonsterlair.blogspot.com:

The premiere of the Lair of Lady Monster on FCC FREE RADIO will have the guests:

DOTTIE LUX of Red Hots Burlesque, School of Shimmy and Spookshow A Go-Go!
If you have seen burlesque in San Francisco or New York City - you have probably seen Dottie Lux.

Alpha Psi Ecdysia Tour comes to Little Minsky's this week

A year ago when I started this blog, I looked around the Web to see what else people were doing. One of the most popular burlesque blogs was and is Jo "Boobs" Weldon's Daily Burlesque (burlesquedaily.blogspot.com). And it just so happened that she was blogging about a group of students at SUNY New Paltz that she had been teaching. They called themselves Alpha Psi Ecdysia, and they're here in the Bay Area this week!

Because of their unique position as the only student-led, campus-based burlesque troupes in the country, they've drawn media attention. Articles in the New Paltz Oracle and the Times Herald-Record have described how and why the troupe formed. Led by producer Lucida Sans, Alpha Psi Ecdysia has performed in New York, Boston, Albany, and New Paltz, and APE is on their first West Coast tour with stops in Los Angeles and San Francisco.

I met many of the performers at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend in Las Vegas. They're personable, informed about burlesque, and very enthusiastic. I'm quite excited to see them perform this week. How can you not be impressed by a group of student performers who managed to attain funds from a university to travel to Las Vegas for Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend?

Featuring APE's Gemma Stone, Lucida Sans, Miss Elixir, Izebel Vivant and Angelique A'Lamode, the group will perform this Thursday, June 11, at Little Minsky's at Club Deluxe:

Woo! That Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend was a blast! Met so many burlesque people from around the world. Saw so many wonderful performances! Seemed like there was something to do and see 24/7! Oh my, how burlesque people know how to party! But now I've got to catch up on my stuff, including this "Week in SF Burlesque!"

Guess what? A bit of BHOF is coming here to the Bay Area! In addition to the locals who performed in Vegas (Bunny Pistol on Thursday night, Kiss Me Kate as a pick-up artist on Friday night), Alpha Psi Ecdysia from SUNY New Paltz is performing! They're one of the only university-affiliated burlesque troupes in the United States. I met some of them this past weekend, and I'm excited to see them perform at Little Minsky's on Thursday and Spookshow-A-G0-Go on Sunday!

Okay. Here is the schedule so far. Keep checking the blog for last minute show information.

2009 Burlesque Hall of Fame Best of Burlesque Pageant Winners and Results

Because last year I wanted the results of the Miss Exotic World Pageant right away, and because I'm here in Vegas this year... Here are the winners of the 2009 Burlesque Hall of Fame Best of Burlesque Pageant! Note that the organizers have dropped the designation of Miss Exotic World 2009 and are using the new designation of "Queen of Burlesque."

Best Debut: Melody Mangler (Vancouver, B.C., )

Best Group: Nanda (Portland, OR and Port Townsend, WA)

Best Variety: Gigi & Pop (Brooklyn, NY)

Best Boylesque: Hot Toddy (Chicago, IL)

Reigning Queen of Burlesque 2009 (formerly Miss Exotic World): Kalani KoKonuts (Las Vegas, NV)

Reigning Queen First Runner Up: Roxy Dlite (Windsor, ON, Canada)

Reigning Queen Second Runner Up: Perle Noire (New Orleans, LA)

There were additional awards presented. The hosts, El Vez and Miss Astrid, said that they were created because there was such a delay in getting the results from the judges for Best Boylesque and Reigning Queen. I've noticed in past years they were called "special awards." The winners are as follows:

Burlesque Hall of Fame Legends Award: Satan's Angel

Most Innovative: Arabella Trapeze (Brooklyn, NY)

Most Classic: Knicker Kittens Burlesque Revue (Stockholm, Sweden)

Most Comical; Little Brooklyn (Brooklyn, NY)

Most Dazzling: Kalani KoKonuts (Las Vegas, NV)

As I'm sitting here in the lobby/coffee shop of the Orleans, I'm watching excited winners and disappointed non-winners passing by. I myself am disappointed that my bowling teammate Vivienne VaVoom wasn't named Reigning Queen. But, I have friends waiting for me at the official afterparty. I shall post more about the goings on here from Friday and Saturday later.

Thursday at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend 2009

I arrived at McCarron airport at 4pm. Since I flew in alone from Oakland, I decided to take a shuttle. Took about 10 minutes longer than by cab, but i saved about $10. Not a bad tradeoff.

The site of the BHOF this year is the Orleans. It's a large hotel/casino west of the Strip. Just south of the Palms and Gold Coast. It's a nice place, relatively new and modern. And the word amonst attendees is that it's a much better place to deal with than the Palms was last year. And they have a nice showroom.

I checked in, got my room, then went to look for my bowling teammates. Many of the male guests were talking about there being a burlesque event here this weekend. They were doing so in rather restrained yet excited tones. Indeed, you can tell pretty much who's here for BHOF. Many are dressed to impress, and stand out from the shorts, tees, and athletic shoes crowd. They have a tendency to gawk and whisper things like, "There's a burlesque thing here this weekend."

No one was at the lanes yet, so I went to eat at the TGI Fridays here. Oddly enough, I received a text from Dizzy Swank, my teammate, saying that he was eating there. I looked around the restaurant, and recognized him sitting with other burlesque people. Turns out it's a popular place. I've seen Kitten on the Keys there and have had a drink with my friends Josie Starre and Lily LeRouge there.

There isn't a really a front desk for the event, so it's just a matter of waiting for one of the events to start. In this case, it was the bowling tournament. I met Magic Max who was with Dizzy, and recognized Vivienne VaVoom from pictures I've seen of her. They were all cool, friendly people, and we pretty much chatted and waited for the bowling to start.

Which of coures took a while. Once we got every team assigned to a lane, we started bowling. This being burlesque bowling, everybody was dressed. Lots of laughs, people mingling. A total blast! There were two games played until it was time for the Thursday night bash to start.

Hosted by Tigger, the event featured many, many talented performers. Darlinda Just Darlinda, Polly Wood, Nasty Canasta, and our own Bunny Pistol were just a few who entertained the crowd.

The show started at 11:30, and went to almost 3am. I chatted with Kitten on the Keys and The Frightening Mr. Tinkler, Douglas Good, and others whom I recognized from the Bay Area. By that time, I was ready to crash. The good thing is the room is only a 5 minute walk from the venues.

Oh! And my teammate Magic Max married Little Stormy earlier in the day. And I was told that Michelle L'amour and Franky Vivid would marry onstage on Friday. Weddings in Vegas. Who would have thought?

Burlesque n' Brass and Rally the Troupes on Saturday, June 6, 2009

Greetings from Las Vegas, site of the 2009 Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend! It's pretty damn amazing here. I was in the 1st Annual Barecats Invitational Bowling Tournament and chatting with Kellita of the Hot Pink Feathers. I really couldn't come up with a word to describe the sight of so many burlesquers bowling. I could only come up with "interesting." Ha ha. So many costumes! The sights and sounds were just something that you'd have to witness for yourselves.

Speaking of Kellita, the Hot Pink Feathers will be performing this Saturday at Cafe Van Kleef in Burlesque n' Brass with Blue Bone Express. Simone de la Getto will be the guest host!
