500th post! San Francisco area burlesque for the week of September 28, 2009

500 posts!

Incredibly, time has flown by so quickly! With this weekly round-up of shows, the SFBR has reached 500 posts. Where did the time go?

During this time, there has been an influx of performers from New York City, there has been a Tease-O-Rama, many Uptown Hubba Hubbas and Red Hots Burlesques, film premieres from Lux Killmore Entertainment and various indie documentary filmmakers, many benefit shows, and lots and lots of fun! :-)

And things don't seem to be slowing down too much in the burlesque community. Despite the cancellation of this year's Tease-O-Rama due to economic conditions, Lux Killmore will be starting production on their film Feed soon, Red Hots Burlesque is more popular than ever, the Hubbas keep chugging along, there are new shows like Kentucky Fried Woman's, Kellita and the Hot Pink Feathers continue steaming up stages and there are an increasing number of burlesque festivals around the world. Plus there's that Christina Aguilera neo-burlesque film that may bring the scene to a mainstream audience. There's much more going on the current world of burlesque--even in the Bay Area--than I could describe in this one post!

It's been a fun ride, and we'll see what the next 500 posts will bring! See ya at some shows, dear readers! Cheers! :-)

“BURLESQUE ON A BUDGET” 10:00 - 11:00am
INSTRUCTOR: VAGINA JENKINS (ATLANTA)
COST: $15-10 sliding Donation
Vagina Jenkins, Queen of Queer Burlesque and self identified "cheap chick" will help you learn thrifty ways to make your sexy costumes look like a million bucks! Bring something you want to embellish if you like (a bra, a pair of boyshorts, and vest from the thriftstore) and Vag has the rest! There will be lots of fabric remnants, sequins, glitter, trimmings, appliques and FUN to go around!

“THE BIG ART OF STRIPTEASE” 11:00 - 12:00pm
INSTRUCTOR: SAHARA DUNES (PORTLAND)
COST: $15-10 sliding scale
Ever wonder what happen to the curvy, sensual feel of striptease? Where are all the sexy vixens with a little meat on their bones? In this workshop, we'll briefly discuss burlesque and striptease and how size can and does play into it. We will also get up and move around and shake what our mamas gave us! This workshop is
fun, educational, sassy, and uplifting.

“EXOTIFICATION AND RACE REPRESENTATION” 12:00 - 1:00pm
INSTRUCTOR: THISWAY/THATWAY (OAKLAND)
COST: FREE
Neo-burlesque is often discussed as a medium with great potential for feminine gender transgression. Less attention, however, has been paid to the ways that race and ethnicity are performed through neo-burlesque. This presentation examines dominant cultural histories of burlesque to better understand their relationship to
contemporary burlesque performance. Additionally, this presentation highlights the ways contemporary burlesque artists of color draw from legacies of resistance and create new possibilities through performance.

“STAGE MANAGEMENT a la S/M” 1:00 - 2:00pm
INSTRUCTOR: SHEU SHEU LE HAURE (MISSOULA)
COST: $10 sliding scale
Learn how to be a good burlesque and cabaret stage hand through “bottoming” for your stage manager or producer. This workshop will utilize S/M politics and boundary setting to help with your understanding of successful stage management. Like S/M players you will be trained in the art of communication and negotiation
while also learning about how to successfully manage the stage, work with performers, technical and venue staff.

“PERFORMING MASCULINITY IN THE BURLESQUE WORLD” 2:00 - 3:00pm
INSTRUCTOR: SF BOYLESQUE (SAN FRANCISCO)
COST: TBD
Description to be determined. Please check back soon!

“COLORING BURLESQUE HISTORY” 3:00 - 4:00pm
INSTRUCTOR: GINGER SNAPZ (SEATTLE)
COST: FREE
The dominant narrative of burlesque history in the US usually begins when the British blondes hit us shores. This dominant narrative includes legends such as Lili St. Cyr, Sally Rand, Dixie Evans, Gypsy Roselee, and occasionally Josephine Baker. Come fill in the gaps in OUR burlesque history, learning about lesser known
but no less legendary artists such as Belle Davis, Ida Forsyne, the original Little Egypt, Ethel Waters, Amalia Aguilar, Noel Toy, Lottie the Body Graves, Toni Elling and more! This workshop is both an exciting "history lesson" and conversation, so come ready to chat.

“ISOLATIONS, RHYTHYMS AND EXTENSIONS 10:00 - 11:00am
INSTRUCTOR: KELLITA OF HOT PINK FEATHERS (SAN FRANCISCO)
COST: $20-10 sliding scale
Practice signature vocabulary from award-winning Hot Pink Feathers dance troupe style, including Showgirl Samba and a host of Latin Bump n' Grind moves. Express yourself with specificity and nuance, with a variety of chest, hip & shoulder articulations, gorgeous extended limbs all to delicious rhythms. BE the music!

INSTRUCTOR: DESIRE D’AMOUR (TUCSON)
COST: $10 pasty making ($5 pasty starter kits)
$10 twirling lesson OR both for $15
Learn to create your own custom pasties and then spin them like a pro!

First you will learn to create amazing pasties that fit your body and costume perfectly! DesirĂ© d’Amour will show you how to form the base, cover it, add a tassel or other hanging object, and shape your pasties. Naughty Piano Bar with Kitten on the Keys on Thursday, September 24, 2009

Every once in a while, Kitten on the Keys (www.kittymusic.com) returns from her extensive travels abroad and spends some time entertaining at home. This is one of those lucky times for us!

This Thursday, Kitten will be at the Rite Spot Cafe (www.ritespotcafe.net) in San Francisco, 2099 Folsom Street. She plays there every few months. It's a free show, but it's in a cafe so you'll probably want to have a drink or two and perhaps something to eat while you enjoy the performance. It's actually a pretty good date night for not much moolah. I had the Caesar salad and a Diet Coke the last time I went. It was under $10, I believe.

She'll also be opening on Sunday for the Squirm Burpee show at the Cell Space in San Francisco. You can find the details in the calendar above, and I'll also post a separate item within the next few days.

If you're low on funds, both Kitten on the Keys and Fromagique will be playing some free shows at cafes this week. Kitten will be at the Rite Spot Cafe on Thursday, and Fromagique will be at Caffe Trieste on Friday. Little Minsky's for Thursday, September 10, 2009

I've been waiting to get this news on my hot little monitor. Yes, it's the line-up for this month's Little Minsky's! And look! From exotic and faraway El Aye, the guest MC is Polly Peabody! ;-)

The wait is over... Little Minsky's is coming soon to a Thursday near you! In vibrant, vivacious, voluptuous 3-D! Because, well, real life is in 3-D now isn't it? Unless you have an eye patch, in which case we hopefully weren't responsible, but even the dimensionally impaired will appreciate this curvaceous cavalcade of vaudevillian delights! Up from Los Angeles we're pleased to welcome guest MC and veteran burlesque sensation Polly Peabody, who's many credits include contributions to Kubrilesque - a burlesque tribute to the films of Stanley Kubrick, running Lopsided Productions in LA along with co-conspirator Crystal Swarovski and stage appearances across the country from the Va Va Voom Room (New York and San Francisco) to The Red Rooster Review in Key West. Joined by such sizzling local talents as the cross-over belly dance burlesque troupe Sister Kate, Amelia Paradise & Sir Loin Strip (of the Diamond Daggers), Kristina Cañizares (also visiting from LA), Lady Satan, Delilah, Lady Monster, Miss de Minna, Sid Scenic and The Flying Fox. And for some musical diversions we have the toe-tapping rag timey tunes of The Dimestore Dandy and smoldering melodies from Alotta Boutté.

Pick your poison, settle in and enjoy the show...

Barbary Coast Burlesque for Wednesday, September 9, 2009

When I was reading the event notice below for the first few times, I was wondering where "El Aye" was. Where was this exotic country that is the home of Polly Peabody? Near Morocco? Somewhere in South America? Then I realized....

So join hour mistress of ceremonies, Eva Von Slut, as some very noteworthy performers grace the stage of Annie's Social Club this Wednesday. You got your Living Legend, Isis Starr. Then you have Kellita, leader of the Hot Pink Feathers. Sparkly Devil, the Bay Area's burlesque sweetheart, will also be there dancing her heart out. And you also have Polly Peabody from exotic El Aye! Heh. And, of course, many other fantastic performers as listed below. :-)

Climate Theater Music Box Series Presents The Music of Kitten on the Keys and Suzanne Ramsey on Tuesday, September 8, 2009

Yes, this is a chance to catch Kitten on the Keys, otherwise known as Suzanne Ramsey, in a solo show free of chatter from the bar and the clinking of glasses and utensils on plates!

Kitten is one of the premier burlesque performers in the world. She's been an emcee at Tease-O-Rama and Miss Exotic World, been featured in books about the art of burlesque, and performed at many of the shows in San Francisco and in various cities in around the world. She'll even be in a film portraying a member of an American burlesque troupe in France.

The Climate Theater is a series of rooms, sort of like an art gallery. There are various works of art mounted in the theater, actually. I'm not sure in which of the rooms the show will be, but I think the largest would seat 60 or less, so get there early to get a ticket and a good seat. Kitten tends to be a popular draw, so I'd say be at the theater to purchase your ticket no later than 7:45, since the doors open at 7:30. Heck, to be really safe, get there at 7:15! :-P

Bawdy bar room music and old time ditties! Suzanne Ramsey aka San Francisco's own Kitten on the Keys presents a unique show- the different facets of her musical personality. Suzanne Ramsey opens playing Tin Pan Alley treasures, bawdy blues, and classic rock- songs that inspire her as a performer on piano ukulele and accordion. She transforms into burlesque character Kitten on the Keys- swathed in pink and a dirty mind.....to perform her double entendre dripped original cabaret charmers that will stir your nethers and tickle your funnybone.

Kitten on the Keys BIO:

Known as Kitten on The Keys, Suzanne Ramsey has been seen on HBO, E!, IFC, Queer TV MTV, and Bravo. She embodies the spirit and style of those days of decadence gone by. Pianist ,chanteuse, and mistress of ceremonies - expect a racy ragtime romp when this little kitty sharpens her claws on a meow mix medley of mad cap gems of yesteryear with a naughty whimsical edge. She’s toured the US and Canada with Devotchka, Teaseorama Roadshow, opened for the DAMNED on the Twisted Cabaret Tour in the UK, performed in sold out shows in France, Italy, Netherlands, Edinburgh and Helsinki , played for jazz legend Little Jimmy Scott in Las Vegas and recently performed in a feature film “TOURNEE” (2010) with award winning French actor Mattieu Almaric. She is a true San Francisco treat!
