Red Hots Burlesque

Come with your sense of humor, get ready to hoot and holler because Red Hots Burlesque brings you the "city's best" bump and grind at the "happiest hour"!

Joining our cast of hellions we have: from barely legal to legally bare, Rhinestone Gorilla Burlesque is New York's ragtag team of art school delinquents. Not your average showgirls, they're rhinestones in the rough--anti-glamour guerilla grrrls prone to attack and entice.

Formerly known as Alpha Psi Ecdysia, Rhinestone Gorilla Burlesque was founded in 2008 as the nation's premier undergraduate burlesque troupe. While based on the campus of the State University of New York at New Paltz, Rhinestone Gorilla lived a double life as an educational institution and a professional producing entity. On the New Paltz campus, Rhinestone Gorilla dedicated itself to teaching burlesque history, the politics of neo-burlesque and the practice of burlesque performance; off-campus, Rhinestone Gorilla was the underage darling of the New York stripperformance art scene, getting naked on school nights at The Slipper Room, Rififi, Public Assembly, and Sugarland and in venues in LA, SF, Boston, and beyond. Though frequent subjects of controversy and police activity, Rhinestone Gorilla's students on the SUNY campus--who have inherited the name Alpha Psi Ecdysia--remain the only state-sponsored strippers in the nation. In addition to learning the fundamentals of working with fans, we will also touch on staging, movement, gesture and expression, bringing it all together to encompass all you need to create a glamorous and confident stage presence. Learn to use your face and your body to create different moods, from vampy to campy! Learn how to work the stage to incredible effect! You are welcome to bring your own fans, or anything else that can be used as a substitute. Bring high heel shoes comfortable to dance in and easy to remove (or ballet slippers), and comfortable clothes that are easy to move in.

The Scarlet Ladders at Red Hots Burlesque this Friday, February 25

The Scarlet Ladders will be making their Red Hots Burlesque debut this Friday at El Rio, which is located at 3158 Mission Street in San Francisco (map). They are a San Francisco-based cabaret/burlesque duo who perform on elevated stages (ladders).

In the next few months, they'll be performing at various shows around the area, including the Hubba Hubba Revue at the Uptown in Oakland, Curvicious at the Blue Macaw in San Francisco, and another Red Hots show in March. For more information about this group, please visit thescarletladders.com.

Also making her debut at RHB this week will be Babraham Lincoln of Sin Sisters Burlesque! You'll not want to wait four score and seven years to see this beauty!

Lucille Highball
will be visiting from Los Angeles, and Miss Mae Western will be taking a break for a few months, so this will be one of the last chances for you to see her perform. She'll also be performing this Sunday evening at The Polk Street Lounge Burlesque & Comedy Show at the Hemlock Tavern in San Francisco. See the SFBR calendar for details.

And the Stripping Granny will be a special guest! Lastly, Dottie Lux herself will be performing, so it promises to be a very good show with lots of intriguing performers.

Come celebrate the happiest hour in the Bay with Red Hots Burlesque, THE BEST in BUMP and GRIND! This week we will be welcoming 2 RHB debuts, 1 visiting performer and a few RHB favs including Miss Mae Western, who will be leaving the country for several months, so this is your last chance (for a while) to toss one back with everyone's favorite sassy sister.

Performances by: Lucille Highball, Babraham Lincoln, Miss Mae Western, The Scarlet Ladders, and Dottie Lux. With special guest the Stripping Granny!

About our debut performers:
Steps Above Cabaret! An answer to the desire for close-up entertainment in venues without a stage, The Scarlet Ladders were formed with the intent to perform in areas among and within the audience. The performers, mounted on elevated 'stages,' maximize the audience's sight-line without disruption. The spectators remain comfortably standing, seated or otherwise grouped, giving them the opportunity to relax and enjoy the show which might happen to be right next to them.

At least twice as hot as Mary Todd, Babraham Lincoln is a member of Sin Sisters Burlesque from Santa Cruz. She has recently performed at Uptown Hubba Hubba and First Friday Follies in Oakland. Babe has a taste for fine whiskey and tap dancing.

She began her career with International boylesque performer Bobbie Burlesque and Miss LuLu Lunaris in a magical trio. Soon after was on her own, craving all that is the world of Burlesque. Her acts are as all- embracing as her personality. Her smile alone will brighten up your day, so get ready to enjoy the luck coming your way! ....

Red Hots Burlesque is still the hottest happy hour in town and this time it gets even happier as we celebrate the sticky stuff with AJ Molecular, Anita Cookie (NYC), Juicy D Light, Honey Lawless & NYC's Gigi & Pop!

About our debut & visiting performers:

Gigi & Pop are a music and variety trio from New York City that won the "Best Variety" trophy at the Burlesque Hall of Fame (Exotic World) in Las Vegas in 2009. Info, mp3s, video, photos and more can be found at www.gigiandpop.com.

Anita Cookie is the charmingly inebriated burlesque star whose sparkling singing voice, dynamite shimmy and intoxicated wit have been called everything from "hilarious" (NYTheater.com) to "sizzling hot" (Go Magazine). Originally hailing from the tan line-free shores of the Pacific, she took the stages of New York by storm and can be seen every night knocking audiences out of their chairs around the city, and across the continent from Key West to Toronto. A Golden Pastie Award winner at the New York Burlesque Festival, Anita is also one-third of the quirky music trio Gigi & Pop, winners of the first-ever "Best Variety Act" trophy at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Pageant 2009 in Las Vegas. As a producer, she's created boozier, more naked versions of classic game shows and talk shows, and with her partners in Casino-O'Fortune Cookie Productions she produces an ongoing series of sold-out shows at the famous Joe's Pub. Also, this spring Anita Cookie is back on the road with her traveling group, "Dangerous Curves Ahead: Burlesque On The Go-Go" for their premier west-coast tour!

March 18th, 7:30pm El Rio (3158 Mission Street SF, CA)- School of Shimmy Showcase! Your chance to sh-sh-shake it on stage!

One of the best ways to figure out if you want to take a class with an instructor is to watch her perform. And every Friday evening, Dottie Lux brings Red Hots Burlesque to El Rio. Sometimes she'll have some of her S.O.S. graduates perform. Often, though, she'll shake and shimmy herself. And you'll get to see a lot of the Bay Area's and the world's best performers, too!

This week, Dottie welcomes several visiting performers to the El Rio stage. Boo Boo Darlin' of Richmond, Virginia, and former Little Minsky's co-producer and SF resident The Flying Fox of New York City! Incidentally, The Flying Fox is also known as Miz Margo, and she'll be one of the DJs at the Edwardian Ball this weekend.

Also performing will be Ginger Murray, Kitty Von Quim, and Patricia Misery!

Intro to Burlesque: “Charm School”

TUESDAYS – December 7, 14, 21, 28 / 7:30PM-8:30PM (4 week series)
Developing the fundamental elements of classic burlesque. Harkening back to the charm schools of the 1950′s, we will begin each class with mild stretches and “drills” on posture (yes, you will stand/walk with a book on your head) and mimicking several classic pinup poses. Then we’ll dig into a focus topic, varied each week.
Led by Mynx d’Meanor (pictured, on the left).

Week 1: “The Look” – Finding your best angles, standing and sitting. We will spend time really looking at ourselves in the mirror to figure out how to show off our assets in the most flattering way possible, and hide any “flaws” we’re not so proud of.
Week 2: “The Strut” – Different ways of walking, based on character (shy kitten? vamp? etc.) and musicality.
Week 3: “The Dance” / The Drama” – Basic dance moves, developing character and drama with musicality and costume.
Week 4: “Putting It All Together” / “Taking It Off” – Tease and strip techniques, overview of playing with accessories (gloves, stockings, etc.)

COST
Drop-ins: $20.00 (Cash)
Pre-registration: $60.00 (PayPal/Credit Card. Eventbrite transaction fee applies.)

Burlesque Dance Party Workout

TUESDAYS – December 7, 14, 21, 28 / 6:30PM-7:15PM (4 week series)
Low-impact workout incorporating burlesque and other dance moves. We’ll be dancing to tunes from the swing era, classic bump n’ grind striptease music, and other contemporary songs that evoke the same feeling.
Led by Mynx d’Meanor.

COST
Drop-ins: $10.00 (Cash)
Pre-registration: $35.00 (PayPal/Credit Card. Eventbrite transaction fee applies.)

Instructors Flame Cynders and Mynx d’Meanor have a combined 20+ years of dance/performance experience, encompassing disciplines such as ballet, ballroom, bellydance, modern, “street”, and jazz/swing. We are heavily influenced and inspired by the dance stylings of Bob Fosse, Cyd Charisse and other “greats” of Broadway and MGM musicals. We incorporate these influences in our approach to teaching burlesque fundamentals and dance choreography.
