Hubba Hubba Revue: Soviet Union! This Friday, January 14

Return to the days when Krushchev, Brezhnev, and Gorbachev ruled the Evil Empire. Only this time, instead of the USSR it's the UHHR (United Hubba Hubba Revue) Burlesque Empire, and the rulers are named Kingfish and Eddie! Gather your rubles, it's time this Friday evening for the Hubba Hubba Revue: Soviet Union show! Conveniently located at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco!

If you're looking for a show with a lot of burlesque performances with music and comedy, the Hubba Hubba Revue's "Big Show" is it. Recently named by the Travel Chanel as one of the world's top 10 burlesque shows, the Hubba Hubba Revue will often feature visiting performers as well as the best of the Bay. This month's show will feature The Shanghai Pearl from Seattle, Ms. Luisa from Minneapolis, and Fever Blister from Los Angeles, as well as the Twilight Vixen Revue, Lady Satan, Sparkly Devil, Vienna La Rouge, and more!

The doors open at 9:00 p.m., and the show will start at 10:00 or so. The last set of burlesque performances lasts until about 1:30 a.m., so bring some comfortable shoes! Dancing then takes place until closing time.

If you arrive between 9:00 and 9:30, make sure to purchase you tickets from the box office first. There's a discount ("KGB discount) for those who arrive early, so you'll pay only $10.00 cover instead of the normal $15.00. Once you get the hand stamp, you'll be free to exit the club and return before the show begins. You can also purchase tickets in advance online from dnalounge.com for $12.00.

Red Hots Burlesque this week: Shows and a debate

Dottie Lux and Red Hots Burlesque have a couple of events coming up in the next two days.

At 7:30 p.m. tonight, Dottie will be participating in a debate at the Jellyfish Gallery in San Francisco, 1286 Folsom Street. At a Red Hots Burlesque show at the Saturn Cafe in Berkeley last November, Spy Girl Friday (aka Spy Emerson) had her art work displayed in the Space Lounge. Someone complained that the art was sexist. The cafe asked Spy to take the art down, then reversed their decision. Tonight's debate about whether Spy's art is sexist with Dottie and "Kelly" the Singing Cowboy will be moderated by Dr. Hal. The art work has been remounted, so you can decide for yourself. The debate is free, but the burlesque show following at 9:00 p.m. with Delilah, Shredder, and probably Dottie and Spy will be $10.00.

“EXOTIFICATION AND RACE REPRESENTATION” 12:00 - 1:00pm

Neo-burlesque is often discussed as a medium with great potential for feminine gender transgression. Less attention, however, has been paid to the ways that race and ethnicity are performed through neo-burlesque. contemporary burlesque performance. Additionally, this presentation highlights the ways contemporary burlesque artists of color draw from legacies of resistance and create new possibilities through performance.

while also learning about how to successfully manage the stage, work with performers, technical and venue staff.

Come fill in the gaps in OUR burlesque history, learning about lesser known
but no less legendary artists such as Belle Davis, Ida Forsyne, the original Little Egypt, Ethel Waters, Amalia Aguilar, Noel Toy, Lottie the Body Graves, Toni Elling and more! This workshop is both an exciting "history lesson" and conversation, so come ready to chat.

Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend 2009

If you've been following my Twitter feed over there in the sidebar, you'll know that I'm on a team for the 1st Annual Barecats Invitational Bowling Tournament. Yay! So it follows that I'll be attending the Burelsque Hall of Fame Weekend in Las Vegas, June 5-7 (www.burlesquehall.com). I'm pretty stoked to be on the same team as Dizzy Swank (www.myspace.com/dizzyswank), Magic Max (magicconversations.blogspot.com), and Vivenne VaVoom (www.viviennevavoom.com). Since none of the local performers competing in the 19th Annual Miss Exotic World Pageant, I'll be cheering loudly for my teammate, Vivienne. Woot!

Here is the lineup of contestants and performers for Miss Exotic World 2009, hosted by by El Vez and Miss Astrid:

Arabella Trapeze (Brooklyn, NY)
The Chicago Starlets (Chicago, IL)
Dinah Might (Vancouver, BC)
The Evil Hate Monkey (Baltimore, MD)
Foxy Tann & the WBTYM's (Twin Cities, MN)
Gigi and Pop (Brooklyn, NY)
Hot Toddy (Chicago, IL)
Miss Indigo Blue (Seattle, WA)
Kalani KoKonuts (Las Vegas, NV)
Knicker Kittens Burlesque Revue (Stockholm, Sweden)
Kristina Nekyia (San Francisco, CA)
Little Brooklyn (Brooklyn, NY)
Lux LaCroix (Los Angeles, CA)
Madame Rosebud (New York, NY)
Melody Mangler (Vancouver, BC)
NANDA (Portland, OR)
The Oona Tramps (Chicago, IL)
Ophelia Flame (Minneapolis, MN)
Paco Fish (Baltimore, MD)
The Peach Tartes (NYC, NY)
Peekaboo Pointe (Brooklyn, NY)
Perle Noire (New Orleans, LA)
Renea LeRoux (Atlanta, GA)
Rita Star (Vancouver, BC)
Roxi D'Lite (Windsor, ON)
The Schlep Sisters (NYC, NY)
The Shanghai Pearl (Seattle, WA)
Sugar Kane (Helsinki, Finland)
Tatah DuJour (Key West, FL)
Trixee Sparkle (London, UK)
Trixie Little (Baltimore, MD)
Vicky Sin (Chicago, IL)
Vivienne VaVoom (Denver, CO)
...and a special, farewell performance by
the Reigning Queen of Burlesque, ANGIE PONTANI

You'll notice that Miss Indigo Blue and The Shanghai Pearl, who will be here this weekend for the premiere of "A Wink and a Smile" and various associated events, are both up for Miss Exotic World. So see some of their last performances before they head to Las Vegas!

There will be some Bay Area burlesquers performing in Vegas, though. Thursday's Opening Night Bash will see Bunny Pistol and Mariel a la Mode doing their thing. Friday's 52nd Annual Striptease Reunion Showcase features legends Holiday O'Hara and Viva LaFever (with The Devil-Ettes). San Francisco native Satan's Angel will also be there! Yay!

I'll probably also do the Pinup Safari with Don Spiro (www.donspiro.com)and Dale Rio (www.dalerio.com). Basically, there will be a bunch of photographers and models and performers loaded on a double decker bus and going to several venues to take pictures for about three hours. This year, the sites so far include the Aruba Hotel (www.arubalasvegas.com) and the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign. Though I'm not a pro, I'm thinking it will be fun to go along for the ride and try to take some shots. I've never stood by the sign or been to the Aruba. Should be fun!

Interested in going? There's still $98 (plus taxes and fees) roundtrip (SFO to LAS) tickets available online from United Airlines and US Airways as of this posting. Prices sometimes change within minutes or hours, so check with your favorite travel websites for the latest fares.

It being Las Vegas, there's usually some decently priced lodging somewhere. Hotels.com has a deal at the Orleans, which is the site of the BHOF Weekend. You get the third night free. So if you arrive on Thursday night, Saturday night is free. That could be worth up to $110. Once again, prices and offers may change, so check to see what rates are available.

Tickets for the BHOF Weekend are available from the Orleans Casino site (www.orleanscasino.com/whats-new/events/burlesque-hall-of-fame-weekend). You can purchase a weekend pass for three nights, or you may purchase show tickets individually. For more information, see the BHOF site at www.burlesquehall.com.

If you do go, let me know. Perhaps we can plunder a buffet together! Arr, matey! Ha ha! :-)

Miss Indigo Blue began her sexy striptease career as a dancer at Champ Arcade and The Lusty Lady in Seattle, and the Lusty Lady and Century in San Francisco in the 90's. As a stripper and a strip-teaser, she developed skills for drawing attention, building desire, and accentuating the moments that happen BEFORE nudity and/or physical contact with customers. Tease is energizing and fun for providers and reduces burnout, while increasing customer loyalty by infusing a sense of attraction and play into the relationship. This workshop was first presented for the Sex Workers' Outreach Project in Tucson, AZ, as an invited class by Stacey Swimme. The material is applicable to all strippers, hookers, escorts, masseuses, and other face:face providers. Miss Indigo is delighted to re-offer this
material on a sliding scale to the San Francisco Bay Area Sex-Industry workers community.

I've been reading about this documentary in burlesque mailing lists for a while now, and it's finally going to make it's premiere in San Francisco! It's A Wink and a Smile, and it will be shown at the Red Vic May 29 through June 2. In addition to the screenings, there will be some live performances by some of the performers from the film!

Playing May 29 - June 2, 2009

SF Theatrical Premiere!
A Wink And A Smile

Dir. Dierdre Timmons US 2008

A Wink and a Smile Movie Poster

An intoxicating mix of private thoughts and public behavior, A Wink and a Smile exposes more than the human body by spotlighting gender, power, sexuality and social identity. It follows the lives of ten “ordinary” women who do something extraordinary - learn the art of burlesque dancing and striptease. Through their adventures, we see how a homemaker, a reporter, a doctor, an opera singer, a taxidermist and a college student join the American cultural revival of burlesque, as it moves from fringe fascination to mainstream obsession, engaging a world where performance art and showgirl spectacle, music, theater and sensuality crash into over-the-top glamour. (91m)

Wink star Miss Indigo Blue joins some of the films' charming starlets, The Shanghai Pearl (The Tantalizing Temptress from Taipei), Vera Lu (The Bawdy Body) and Seattle's Fuschia FoXXX (The Hot Pink Bellydance Machine) after the 7 p.m. screening Friday, May 29.

Vienna La Rouge ("most classic performer" at the 2006 Exotic World Burlesque Pageant) joins Shanghai, Vera Lu and Fuschia FoXXX after the 7 p.m. screening on Saturday, May 30.

Kellita (Queen of Carnaval SF 2008 and "Best of the Bay" by the SFBG) kicks up the action with Shanghai, Vera Lu and Fuschia FoXXX after the 7 p.m. screening on Sunday, May 31

Director Dierdre Timmons will also be on hand!
