Miss Indigo Blue is the 2011 Reigning Queen of Burlesque

It was a big night for the Seattle burlesque community as Miss Indigo Blue was crowned the Reigning Queen of Burlesque, otherwise still known as Miss Exotic World among the faithful.

Not only did she win that prestigious award at the Tournament of Tease competition at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend in Las Vegas, but Lily Verlaine also of Seattle was second runner-up. The first runner-up was Anna Fur Laxis of Yorkshire, United Kingdom. Miss Blue is the headmistress of the Academy of Burlesque and star of the burlesque documentary A Wink and a Smile.

Captain Kidd of Brisbane, Australia, won the title of Reigning King of Boylesque and the award as "Most Dazzling" for his performance featuring dancing with multiple hoops. "Best Group" went to Chicago's Stage Door Johnnies, who were the only boylesque troupe competing in the category. Jett Adore of the Johnnies was also named "Most Innovative" as a solo boylesque contender for his act which he included feathers to create the image of a bird in his dance.

"Best Debut" went to LouLou D'Vil of Tampere, Finland. Also among the winners on Saturday night were "Best Group: The Dolls of Doom of Chicago, which contains Lola Martinet of San Francisco. Their performance had an ocean theme complete with a member costumed as a crab-juggling octopus.

A Brief Guide to Attending the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend 2010

If you're planning on going to Vegas this year, here is a brief list of things that I wished I knew before going last year. These tips should make your trip slightly easier and result in a better experience.
  • If you're arriving by air, you'll need to make your way to the Plaza Hotel or the Golden Nugget downtown. It's usually better to stay near the showrooms and all of the BHoF action, and it seems the Golden Nugget is where most burlesquers are staying this year. If you're arriving solo into McCarran, it's far less expensive to catch one of the shuttles. There are several shuttle companies with ticket/token booths in the middle of the baggage claim level curbside. Fares are around $16 round trip, or $8 one way. You can arrange pick up at the hotel when you return, so get a phone number from your company. If there's two or more of you, you can split a taxi or limousine. I remember people getting angry last year because it cost $20-25 each way by taxi to get to the Orleans. Taxis will shave some minutes off your travel time, but you'll have to do the cost-benefit analysis for yourself.

  • Though the people who run the Weekend do a great job, I noticed last year that things don't always go smoothly and information about the events tends to be scarce, unless you're part of the network "in the know." Here's a copy of the full schedule of events that came from the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend's Facebook page's notes. Though it may be in the program which you can purchase, it's probably best to print it out and keep it with you:

  • The Weekend is like a convention for the burlesque community, so lots of people already know each other and share the latest information that way. Probably over 70% of the attendees (reportedly about 1200 last year) are either performers, teachers, students, or photographers who are part of the burlesque scene in their cities. It's a great opportunity to get to know burlesque people from other areas of the country and world so don't be shy and say hi to people!

  • If you're not close to people "in the know," one of the best ways to keep abreast of news, events, changes in schedule, etc. is to follow people who are attending on Twitter. Use the hashtag "#bhof" to see who's posting information about the Weekend. There may also be Tweetups, and people will post invitations to join them in the lounges and such to socialize. It was the best use of Twitter in my experience so far!

  • You can also join the Miss Exotic World Yahoo! Group and keep track of the aforementioned Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend's Facebook Page. If you need extra tickets, people have been posting some for sale or trade on the Yahoo! Groups site. The Weekend is sold out, so that may be an option if you don't have tickets yet.

  • For sure, check-in early so you're not late to any events. Also make sure to bring your identification and proof that you're registered (e.g., tickets, a letter proving you're on the guest list, media credentials, etc.). Last year, they gave us bracelets that let us into the various events for the weekend. They may or may not be doing the same thing this year, but just make sure you've got yours.

  • The Pinup Safari details will be announced on Friday evening during the Legends show. If you have a camera (even if it's just a click-and-shoot) or want to model and get some photos of yourself, the Pinup Safari is definitely fun. They load photogs on top of a double decker bus, and models on the lower level. Then they take everyone to several Vegas locations (Las Vegas sign, Rat Pack era motel, etc.) and pictures are taken. For models, just be sure to get the contact information from the photogs themselves, or else they may forget to contact you. It looks like the Safari will once again be organized by Don Spiro and will take place on Saturday afternoon.

  • It looks like the event is sold out, so make sure you get to the shows early if you want good seats and don't have one of the few reserved tickets. It looked like the Plaza's showroom is a lot smaller than the Orleans, and I think I remember reading that some people waited a few hours the last time the event was held at the Plaza. If you're a part of a group, you may want to try and designate a seat holder who will wait in line with his or her iPad, Kindle, or other entertainment device. You can buy him or her drinks at the after parties.

  • I found enough to do last year to keep me busy just hanging out near the Orleans, but I did make time on Sunday afternoon to check out a few casinos on the Strip. There's a Bettie Page Clothing Store in the Planet Hollywood shopping area that's cool to visit. There are also a number of other stores in the area for all of your wardrobe needs. You may want to Tweet to see if people have some recommendations. Just use "#bhof" in all of your Weekend related Tweets.

  • For internet access, see if there are some cheaper options than in-room access. For example, the Orleans had a coffee place in the lobby with free internet. Lots of burlesque people sat in the lobby with their laptops. There's a Starbucks in the Golden Nugget, so that may be an option for you.

  • The Burlesque Hall of Fame Grand Opening on Friday afternoon looks like a can't miss event. I was hoping to see it last year, but it wasn't ready to open. It's close to the Plaza, so getting there should be easy!

It looks like lots of things are coming together at the last minute this year for the Weekend. If you track all of the Weekend events online, especially through Twitter, you should be alright information-wise. Information was often difficult to come by last year, but fortunately I knew a few people who had it or could get it.

Good luck to all of the Bay Area performers! And I hope that all attendees have a great time in Vegas this weekend. Wish I was going!

2009 Burlesque Hall of Fame Best of Burlesque Pageant Winners and Results

Because last year I wanted the results of the Miss Exotic World Pageant right away, and because I'm here in Vegas this year... Here are the winners of the 2009 Burlesque Hall of Fame Best of Burlesque Pageant! Note that the organizers have dropped the designation of Miss Exotic World 2009 and are using the new designation of "Queen of Burlesque."

Best Debut: Melody Mangler (Vancouver, B.C., )

Best Group: Nanda (Portland, OR and Port Townsend, WA)

Best Variety: Gigi & Pop (Brooklyn, NY)

Best Boylesque: Hot Toddy (Chicago, IL)

Reigning Queen of Burlesque 2009 (formerly Miss Exotic World): Kalani KoKonuts (Las Vegas, NV)

Reigning Queen First Runner Up: Roxy Dlite (Windsor, ON, Canada)

Reigning Queen Second Runner Up: Perle Noire (New Orleans, LA)

There were additional awards presented. The hosts, El Vez and Miss Astrid, said that they were created because there was such a delay in getting the results from the judges for Best Boylesque and Reigning Queen. I've noticed in past years they were called "special awards." The winners are as follows:

Burlesque Hall of Fame Legends Award: Satan's Angel

Most Innovative: Arabella Trapeze (Brooklyn, NY)

Most Classic: Knicker Kittens Burlesque Revue (Stockholm, Sweden)

Most Comical; Little Brooklyn (Brooklyn, NY)

Most Dazzling: Kalani KoKonuts (Las Vegas, NV)

As I'm sitting here in the lobby/coffee shop of the Orleans, I'm watching excited winners and disappointed non-winners passing by. I myself am disappointed that my bowling teammate Vivienne VaVoom wasn't named Reigning Queen. But, I have friends waiting for me at the official afterparty. I shall post more about the goings on here from Friday and Saturday later.

Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend 2009

If you've been following my Twitter feed over there in the sidebar, you'll know that I'm on a team for the 1st Annual Barecats Invitational Bowling Tournament. Yay! So it follows that I'll be attending the Burelsque Hall of Fame Weekend in Las Vegas, June 5-7 (www.burlesquehall.com). I'm pretty stoked to be on the same team as Dizzy Swank (www.myspace.com/dizzyswank), Magic Max (magicconversations.blogspot.com), and Vivenne VaVoom (www.viviennevavoom.com). Since none of the local performers competing in the 19th Annual Miss Exotic World Pageant, I'll be cheering loudly for my teammate, Vivienne. Woot!

Here is the lineup of contestants and performers for Miss Exotic World 2009, hosted by by El Vez and Miss Astrid:

Arabella Trapeze (Brooklyn, NY)
The Chicago Starlets (Chicago, IL)
Dinah Might (Vancouver, BC)
The Evil Hate Monkey (Baltimore, MD)
Foxy Tann & the WBTYM's (Twin Cities, MN)
Gigi and Pop (Brooklyn, NY)
Hot Toddy (Chicago, IL)
Miss Indigo Blue (Seattle, WA)
Kalani KoKonuts (Las Vegas, NV)
Knicker Kittens Burlesque Revue (Stockholm, Sweden)
Kristina Nekyia (San Francisco, CA)
Little Brooklyn (Brooklyn, NY)
Lux LaCroix (Los Angeles, CA)
Madame Rosebud (New York, NY)
Melody Mangler (Vancouver, BC)
NANDA (Portland, OR)
The Oona Tramps (Chicago, IL)
Ophelia Flame (Minneapolis, MN)
Paco Fish (Baltimore, MD)
The Peach Tartes (NYC, NY)
Peekaboo Pointe (Brooklyn, NY)
Perle Noire (New Orleans, LA)
Renea LeRoux (Atlanta, GA)
Rita Star (Vancouver, BC)
Roxi D'Lite (Windsor, ON)
The Schlep Sisters (NYC, NY)
The Shanghai Pearl (Seattle, WA)
Sugar Kane (Helsinki, Finland)
Tatah DuJour (Key West, FL)
Trixee Sparkle (London, UK)
Trixie Little (Baltimore, MD)
Vicky Sin (Chicago, IL)
Vivienne VaVoom (Denver, CO)
...and a special, farewell performance by
the Reigning Queen of Burlesque, ANGIE PONTANI

You'll notice that Miss Indigo Blue and The Shanghai Pearl, who will be here this weekend for the premiere of "A Wink and a Smile" and various associated events, are both up for Miss Exotic World. So see some of their last performances before they head to Las Vegas!

There will be some Bay Area burlesquers performing in Vegas, though. Thursday's Opening Night Bash will see Bunny Pistol and Mariel a la Mode doing their thing. Friday's 52nd Annual Striptease Reunion Showcase features legends Holiday O'Hara and Viva LaFever (with The Devil-Ettes). San Francisco native Satan's Angel will also be there! Yay!

I'll probably also do the Pinup Safari with Don Spiro (www.donspiro.com)and Dale Rio (www.dalerio.com). Basically, there will be a bunch of photographers and models and performers loaded on a double decker bus and going to several venues to take pictures for about three hours. This year, the sites so far include the Aruba Hotel (www.arubalasvegas.com) and the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign. Though I'm not a pro, I'm thinking it will be fun to go along for the ride and try to take some shots. I've never stood by the sign or been to the Aruba. Should be fun!

Interested in going? There's still $98 (plus taxes and fees) roundtrip (SFO to LAS) tickets available online from United Airlines and US Airways as of this posting. Prices sometimes change within minutes or hours, so check with your favorite travel websites for the latest fares.

It being Las Vegas, there's usually some decently priced lodging somewhere. Hotels.com has a deal at the Orleans, which is the site of the BHOF Weekend. You get the third night free. So if you arrive on Thursday night, Saturday night is free. That could be worth up to $110. Once again, prices and offers may change, so check to see what rates are available.

Tickets for the BHOF Weekend are available from the Orleans Casino site (www.orleanscasino.com/whats-new/events/burlesque-hall-of-fame-weekend). You can purchase a weekend pass for three nights, or you may purchase show tickets individually. For more information, see the BHOF site at www.burlesquehall.com.

If you do go, let me know. Perhaps we can plunder a buffet together! Arr, matey! Ha ha! :-)
