Books about neo-burlesque

I was reading the Vivienne VaVoom "Candy Gram " on the Candy Pitch blog, and I noticed the two books she has on her nightstand. One was Gilded Lili: Lili St. Cyr and the Striptease Mystique, and the other was The Happy Stripper: Pleasures and Politics of the New Burlesque. Now I'm always curious about the latest evolution of burlesque, so I chose to Google the latter title.

It seems that Google has a preview of the book, which may be found here. It includes the first 23 or so pages, as well as the table of contents and covers, so it should give you an idea if you would like to purchase it for yourself. I'm finding the introduction interesting, so I'll probably buy the book sometime soon. It seems to focus on the sociological implications of burlesque, especially with regards to feminism and post-feminism.

Oddly enough, I also discovered that Ms. VaVoom has written her own book about neo-burlesque. It's called Burlesque and the New Bump-n-Grind, published under her offstage name, Michelle Baldwin. It has very favorable reviews on Amazon.com, and it seems like it includes quite a bit of the history of burlesque as well as an exploration of the reasons for its latest popularity. It also has a preview on Google Books, so you can take a look at it also to see if it's worth a purchase.

Between those two books, one can get information about other books covering burlesque that are referenced and included in the bibliographies. It's a book and burlesque fan's dream come true. Hehe.

Happy reading!

Vacation time

Well, it's time for yours truly to take a holiday and give my wrists a break from the keyboard. I'm off for the next 10 days or so.

What does this mean with regards to the calendar/blog? Well, not much. Haha. I've scheduled posts to publish on their usual days, and the calendar is pretty much complete.

The only difference is that I won't be able to add any new items over the time period. Also, I won't have any details of the shows that are happening on Labor Day. So consult your favorite Hubba Hubba source for info. I find the best source are their bulletins on MySpace.

Happy Labor Day, people! Don't do anything I wouldn't do! ;-)

Robert Adler burlesque photos, and thoughts on burlesque then and now

As I was doing a search for burlesque stuff in Google, I came across some old notices announcing that there was a showing of Robert Adler's burlesque photos in San Francisco in April/May of this year.

Unfortunately, I didn't get to see the exhibition. but I did find his site at http://www.robertadlerburlesque.com/home.html, which features some of the photos and a text description of his experiences at the Trocadero in Philadelphia in the early 1970s.

What strikes me as I read it is how burlesque seems to have changed in the almost 40 years since he took those pictures. Well, the pasties are still there. And the emphasis on performance and dancing skills is still there. Some things seemed to have changed, however.

These days, it seems--at least in San Francisco--that there are often more women in the audience than men. In the 1970s, Adler implies that mostly men watched the performers, as well as preyed upon them.

Also, the performers had a circuit in which they travelled from city to city, performing at different theaters to eke out a living. Now, it seems like many of the women have regular day jobs--where they eke out a living, hehe--and perform in shows at night as a form of artistic self-expression.

Which is not to say that there aren't performers who travel to different cities to shake and shimmy. Many of them do, and some of them make a living being in burlesque. The impression that I get, however, is that being in burlesque in the 1970s was a pretty grim kind of existence, where the women were exploited by men as they tried to survive.

Now, however, it seems that the performers are empowered by performing, and enjoy it immensely. Perhaps that is why burlesque has enjoyed a revival. It's been a renewal of an art form powered by women, for women and men.

If you are currently a burlesque performer, how would you describe your experience in burlesque? I'm not directly involved with burlesque, but from the people I've talked to and from what I've read, burlesque has evolved into something different from it's last incarnation.
