And, down Market Street, you'll find Tingel Tangel at Cafe du Nord. I'm not familiar with the performers for this month, but Earl Dax is back with his show after taking December off, and he sounds pumped!

http://www.ticketweb.com

After our hiatus in December, we're back at Cafe du Nord this Wednesday, January 28 with special guest host Dina Martina! This is Dina's first appearance in San Francisco since 2001. (The Bush Administration probably realized that the combination of Dina Martina and San Francisco's rich progressive community would be combustible!) During that time she has become the toast of Provincetown - where she performs 4 months every summer - and New York where her recent run at the Cutting Room drew sold-out crowds whose ranks included such luminaries at Jake Shears, Justin Bond, and John Cameron Mitchell (apparently she's big with "the gay").

That's just the tip of the proverbial iceberg however. The evening also features a special reunion of performers from Crimson Cabaret, an underground phenomenon at The Stud whose principal collaborators - Spencer Day, Trixxie Carr, and Gerri Lawlor - come together again for one night only! You might recall Lawlor from her hysterical turn at Tingel Tangels past as "The Piffy" while Day has established a successful career as a crooner par excellence. Carr was a frequent co-host and performer at Trannyshack and continues to perform and present nights around the city.

After months of unreturned emails asking Kiddie to perform, I finally cornered her at a bar the last time I was in town and got down to brass tacks. (What?) I was blown away when I saw the YouTube video of her winning Miss Trannyshack Performance and then again when I saw her live at the Trannyshack Kiss Off. To my delight, she sent me a MySpace message (MySpace!! Really, people still use it?) confirming her performance.

Tingel Tangel started out as a salon/workshop environment in New York, so I'm delighted to see Kiddie branch out and incorporate live singing into her performance. Put yourself out there, girl!! San Francisco's favorite Patsy Cline, Arturo Galster, also debuts some new material with former-Cockette and accomplished musical theater auteur Scrumbly Koldewyn on the keys. Harpist Deidre Egan - who is also part of the Ding String Trio with Uni and Her Ukele - beguiles the crowd with her stunning arrangements and heavenly voice, and A plus D - the DJ mavericks behind Bootie - keep the crowd dancing into the night!

Phew! What an line up! The only thing missing is YOU! Hope to see you at du Nord on Wednesday.

~Earl

P.S. Mark your calendars for Wednesday, February 25 when we welcome burlesque performance artist Narcissister and the first-ever Mr. Exotic World, and Little Miss JuJu B and Uncle Kenny star performer of Weimar New York Tigger!.)

It looks like there are only two shows this week, so it'll be a short post!

• Monday, January 19, 2009: Uptown Hubba Hubba at the Uptown in Oakland, 1928 Telegraph Avenue. It's time for more cheese, please! That means it's time for Fromagique! Featuring the Fromagettes, Bombshell Betty and her Burlesqueteers, Holly Highbeams, Tinky Sparkle, Coconuts, Peggy Pistolwhip, Double Dare, Bootsy LaRue and Scarlett Fever! Doors 9pm, show 10ish. $5, 21+ w/ID.

This just means I have time to post something else! A real treat for those of us in the Bay Area. OMG, I'm such a tease. Haha! Read the next posting...

Dr. Sketchy's for Thursday, January 15, 2009

Just a reminder that the first Dr. Sketchy's of 2009 will be at Bombshell Betty's Studios, 715 Bryant Street Suite 102, San Francisco (Google Map), Thursday, January 15. The drawing starts at 7pm and is scheduled to finish up at about 10ish. Holly Highbeams will be the burlesque model, and Fromagique will be the musical guest. I've been told that there will be a second Dr. Sketchy's this month, though the details are TBA.

For those who would like some idea of what Dr. Sketchy's is like, I've taken some photos at the November event.

Artists hard at work sketching Tinky Sparkle at the November Dr. Sketchy's SF (Photo by Maxwell Wood)

Another angle, another pose from Tinky. (Photo by Maxwell Wood)

Tinky striking a pose, if not actually vogueing. (Photo by Maxwell Wood)

The evening starts out with some music, and the model starts out with some short poses, two minutes in length. As everyone gets warmed up, the poses lengthen out to five minutes, ten, then there's a long one at the end of the evening of twenty minutes, usually.

Every 30-45 minutes there's a break for both the model and the artists. There's sometimes snacks and beverages, and attendees usually chat and mingle with each other until the next session starts.

In the middle of the evening, there is usually a contest. The host picks some kind of theme for the attendees to use in their drawings. In the past, it's been aliens, cartoon characters, and having the model suffer for being a naughty elf. As you can tell, the contests are usually fun.

It really is a great opportunity to practice one's figure drawing skills using a live model, and it's a great way to meet other artists!

Jessica Whiteside: Dr. Sketchy's SF and Pin It Up, Babycakes!

My friend Jessica Whiteside is keeping verrrrry busy! She's hosting this week's Dr. Sketchy's on Thursday, plus she's continuing work on Pin It Up, Babycakes!, a show she's co-curating with Alice Stribling in February. The opening night date is now set for Wednesday, February 5!

This Thursday, January 15, Dr. Sketchy's San Francisco will be welcoming the bodacious, the busty, the burlesquer Holly Highbeams (aka Holly High-Beemz) as the guest model/performer!

Dr. Sketchy's SF

Come to SF's best burlesque/cabaret/life drawing event. Back at Bombshell Betty's this month! The model will be Holly High-Beemz!

Holly Highbeemz is fresh from her success at Nude Aid with the Center for Sex and Culture. She has been studying and performing burlesque in SF for three years and been an intimate part of Bombshell Betty's Burlesqueteers. Fromagique will be playing in the intermission! http://www. myspace.com/fromagique

Up next for Ms. Whiteside is an event that I've been waiting a long time for. Pin It Up, Babycakes! She's co-curating the show with Alice Stribling, which will be at 111 Minna Gallery for most of February. It's an exhibition of pin-up art, and opening night will feature burlesque performances and our very own Kitten on the Keys as MC! Some of the artists exhibiting include Molly Crabapple (founder of Dr. Sketchy's), UK artist Emma Mount, Darling Propaganda, and both Alice and Jessica.

Here's some of the information I've received and gathered about the show:

Pin It Up, Babycakes!

Alice Stribling and Jessica Whiteside (Tink) are organizing a hottie-hot exhibition at 111 Minna Gallery in February 2009. The theme for the exhibition is Pin Up Art and Photography with super sexy Pin Up babes and Burlesque performers as the subject.

As part of the opening night experience, we are going to have Burlesque performances, video footage of vintage Burlesque and Valentine’s day gifts!
