Keeping up with Kitten on the Keys

When my friend Josie Starre first started taking me to burlesque shows early in 2006, one of the first performers I noticed was this sexy redhead who played her piano (big or small) with much talent, sass, and wit. Of course, the redhead was our very own Kitten on the Keys!

During the almost three years since, I've seen her play at piano bars, anniversary parties for theaters, various burlesque shows such as Little Minsky's, and I've seen her host Tease-O-Rama. Every single time, I've noticed the members of the audience tapping their toes with a smile on their faces.

And now, she's busier than ever, so you'll have even more chances to see her! I'll list just some of the places where she'll be performing in the upcoming weeks:

  • Friday, January 30: Pre Code Follies at the Niles Essany Silent Film Theater, 37417 Niles Blvd., Fremont. Betty Boop and MUCH MORE! 8:30pm. Suggested donation $9. http://www.nilesfilmmuseum.org/
  • Thursday, February 5: Pin It Up, Babycakes at 111 Minna Gallery, 111 Minna Street, San Francisco. 6pm to 11. $5 after 9pm, 21+ w/ID. http://www.pinitupbabycakes.com/
  • Thursday, February 12: Thrillville at Cerritos Speakeasy Theater, 10070 San Pablo Avenue, El Cerrito. 9:15pm. $9, 18+. http://www.thrillville.net
  • Thursday, February 12: Shindig 69 at The Rickshaw Stop, 155 Fell Street, San Francisco. Yes, Kitten will be at Thrillville first, then scoot over to The Rickshaw Stop for Baby Doe's B-Day Party! Doors 8:30pm, show at 9. $10, 21+ w/ID. http://www.devilettes.com/
  • Saturday, February 14: Spookshow A-Go-Go: Valentines Day Massacre at Kimo's, 1361 Polk Street, San Francisco. Doors 9pm, show at 10. $10, 21+ w/ID. http://www.myspace.com/spookshowagogo
  • Sunday, February 15: Kitten on the Keys Show Benefit at Mama Calizo's Voice Factory, 1519 Mission Street, San Francisco. 6:30 to 9:30, $15, sliding scale. http://www.suzanneramsey.net/doesthispiano.html
  • Thursday, February 26: Kitten on the Keys at the Rite Spot Cafe, 2099 Folsom Street, San Francisco. 8:30pm to 10:30. Free. 21+. http://www.ritespotcafe.net/home.html
  • March 26-28, April 2-4: Does This Piano Make My Butt Look Big? Kitten's one woman show at Mama Calizo's Voice Factory, 1519 Mission Street, San Francisco. $15 sliding scale. http://www.suzanneramsey.net/doesthispiano.html
These are just some of the places where you'll be able to catch her. I'll post more soon! Her calendar is available on her website at www.kittymusic.com.

After her one woman show, Kitten will be traveling around the world performing her magic, so catch her live before she leaves for a few months!

Burlesque and local artists

If one thinks about it burlesque and art go together like peanut butter and jelly, peanut butter and chocolate, peanut butter and...haha. OK. You get the picture.

Anyway, attractive women in various kinds of revealing costumes have been a staple in pop art for decades. From the nose art of airplanes in World War II, to the sides of orange crates, to the Louis K. Meisel Gallery in New York, pin-up girls have had an enduring role in our culture.

So, I was very pleasantly surprised to see that some of our own local burlesque performers are artists and are exhibiting their work around the area. For example, Katrin Auch, in the post above, is an artist. So are Jessica "Tink" Whiteside (www.jessicawhiteside.com) and Alice Stribling (www.alicestribling.com).

Tink and Alice are both co-curating a show that is scheduled for February 2009 at 111 Minna. It is titled "Pin It Up Babycakes!", and there is more information about the show at www.pinitupbabycakes.com. Wnen more details are available, I'll post them here. As a side note, is it just me or does that look like Tink with dark hair on the homepage of the exhibition website? Perhaps it's just me. Heh.

Tink also has some of her work exhibited at The Alternative Cafe (www.thealternativecafe.com) in Seaside near Monterey for the next week. It's a group show called "Garter Belts and Gasoline." There will be a closing party next Saturday evening for collectors. Please see the cafe's website for more detials. I really do love her work, and she's graciously given me permission to use one of her paintings as a masthead for this blog. I just need to develop a new template.

If any of you learn about a show featuring pin-ups and burlesque related art, please let me know and I'll post them here.
