Lily Burana book signing and Sugar Shack in SF on Thursday, May 14, 2009

Lady Satan of Sugar Shack let me know that they're having a combination benefit show and book signing with Lily Burana (http://www.lilyburana.com/) next week at the Hypnodrome on 1oth Street.

Lily Burana is a writer who has published in various publications including The Washington Post, GQ, The New York Times, Self, Glamour, Entertainment Weekly, Details, and others. I remember reading some of her articles!

So she's a former "punk rock stripper," who has fallen in love with a man in uniform and found herself a military wife while her husband is in Iraq. So what does she do to entertain the other wives? Teach them burlesque!

That's the focus of the story of her latest book, I Love a Man in Uniform. She'll be at the Hypnodrome next week signing copies of her book, and there will be a show featuring some of the SF's burlesque stars.

And it's a free event!

Here are the details:

Please join Green Apple Books and Music, when we take a field trip to the fabulous Hypnodrome Theatre on Thursday, May 14th to celebrate the newest book from Strip City’s Lily Burana, entitled I Love a Man in Uniform. This enchanting memoir finds Lily falling head over heels for an enlisted man, and before you can say “Ten-Hut!” she’s hitched and living on West Point while her husband is deployed to Iraq. So how does an ex-erotic dancer stay busy on a military base these days? Well it’s quite simple really! She starts teaching the other wives the lost art of classic burlesque – gulp!

This free event will showcase Lily Burana in a theatrical setting, but she won’t be alone. Joining her for the evening will be San Francisco’s own burlesque superstars performing and offering suggestions for other budding dancers. Door prizes and a charity raffle (not to mention beer and wine) will round out what is certain to be a book-signing like none that you’ve ever been to before.

Slide by The Hypnodrome on Thursday May 14th when high and low cultures collide! There’s plenty of free parking, and it’s the perfect excuse to discover (or hopefully revisit) one of the coolest theatre spaces in the Bay Area. Plus, a signed copy of I Love a Man in Uniform would make the perfect gift for the one that you love.

Addition and corrections on May 6, 2009: In my haste to get the posting up, I spelled Lily Burana's name incorrectly. So that was corrected. I also omitted the picture of her book cover, so I added that. I added Sugar Shack's involvement, because many of the event descriptions online, including Lily Burana's blog, list Sugar Shack Burlesque as performing. I'll see if Lady Satan has a lineup, and I'll post it here if she sends it to me. Oh, and the L.A. Times blog, Jacket Copy, has an interesting interview posted online.

Sugar Shack comes to San Francisco!

It looks like Lady Satan is bringing New York's Sugar Shack Burlesque and Dance Party to the City by the Bay!

According to an interview with Legs Malone in the Valley Advocate, Sugar Shack was founded in New York by RunAround Sue and Lady Satan.

There's not much information it seems, other than that the first show will be August 9, 2008, at the Elbo Room. Oh, there will be girls! Dancing! Go-Go! And mooore! With Sergio Iglesias and MattB providing the tunes.

Looks fun! I'll put out more details as they become available.
