THE HOP is coming to The Mission District's Infamous El Rio on Saturday, May 5th aka CINCO DE MAYO!!!! This is gonna be a big one full of entertainers, revelers & awesome people! We've packed so much fun into one event that we're gonna have to start early so get there at 9pm so you don't miss anything!
DJ Miss Cherry Bomb (Maya Martinez) will be rockin' the vintage vinyl all night long for your dancin' n' listenin' pleasure!
The Bastard Makers are a greasy 3 piece that will shake you with their brand of American Rock n' Roll meets Rockabilly!
Candyland Burlesque is the dream child of popular LA promoter Yadi Hurtado. She has gathered some of the finest Burly Q Stars of SoCal; Angie Cakes, Cinnamon Britches, Dolly Danger, Drea Dillinger, Fever Blister, Jolie Du Beau, & Judy Luck plus local SF favorite Dottie Lux. Together they will tease, torment & titillate you with a sexy Candyland theme!!!
The Badmen are a veteran Bay Area trio that play a scorchin' style of old school Rockabilly with reverb laden vocals, rollin' slapback upright bass, rockin' stand up drums & sweet hollowbody guitar!
Handsome Hawk Valentine is, as always, your humble Host & Master of Ceremonies.
Peter Thomas Hair, featuring Ileath Bridges, will be there with talented (& hot!) stylists offering free hairdos (don't forget to tip!) for Gals n' Guys including Updos, Pompadours, Victory Rolls etc...They also will be selling hair flowers & accessories.
Karen Knoller Photography will be on hand to document your awesome hair, makeup, clothing & attitude in an intimate portrait setting.
Corazon & Amor Eterno Tattoo & Art Space will be selling beautiful Mexican Folk Art & Trinkets.
Bettie Page Clothing is sponsoring our Raffle ($1 a ticket or 6 for $5) with valuable & classy prizes from BPC, all the performers and vendors!!!
Rocky's Frybread will be on hand to feed you dinner and/or snacks like Navajo Frybread & Navajo Tacos vegan/veggie friendly too!
If you haven't been to El Rio before then you will be blown away! It is a quaint and spacious mix between Bar, Club & Community Center that is very open to all kinds of people. It has 2 indoor spaces, a large outdoor deck/yard/patio, lots of nooks & crannies, plus a pool table & shuffleboard. They detest credit cards so bring cash or be prepared to use their ATM.
Cinco De Mayo is a fun holiday and a nice way to celebrate a great victory in Mexican history as well as Mexican culture & it's awesome impact on San Francisco & California. We will not be attempting to co-opt the holiday. This is not a St Patrick's Day style lampoon of Mexicans. Please no silly sombreros, panchos, bad accents or fake mustaches. Unless, of course, that's your normal thing. THE HOP is very Mexican, Queer & Female friendly and we are celebrating that on Cinco De Mayo, in the Mission, at a woman owned queer friendly bar with a few of our Mexican-American friends involved. We don't mean to be cultural tourists or condescending in any way. But having a delicious margarita at the bar or a tasty taco in the hood is very much encouraged!!!
