Burlesque 101 class with Red Hots Burlesque this Sunday, February 26 at Tease Me Boutique in Berkeley

This Sunday, February 26, Red Hots Burlesque's School of Shimmy will be bringing their Burlesque 101: Bump & Grind Basics class to Tease Me Boutique in Berkeley!

Designed for those who are beginners at burlesque, the class will cover the fundamentals that you'll need to know to get started, whether in the privacy of your own home or on the stage of a burlesque show!

This two hour class will start at 5:00 p.m. and end at 7:00 p.m. While you're there, you can do some shopping for lingerie and your other adult shopping needs at Tease Me Boutique. The class is $30.00, and you can make your reservation using the PayPal link below. It's a class for any age or gender!

Burlesque 101: Bump & Grind Basics

Join us as we learn the art of Tease! Red Hots Burlesque is back at Tease Me Boutique presenting Burlesque 101: Bump & Grind Basics. In this two-hour workshop, students will learn the history of burlesque, how to create a persona and basic choreography. As well as learning to build your burlesque attitude; feel great about your body, and an open discussion about increased confidence and positive thinking.

All classes are open to students of any age or gender who want to shake it on stage or in the bedroom. No previous dance or performance experience is required.

Red Hots Burlesque this week, Homobiles fundraiser, School of Shimmy classes

This week at El Rio, catch the Red Hots Burlesque shows plus a fundraiser for Homobiles! Plus, there are upcoming classes offered by the RHB School of Shimmy happening at various locations!

This Wednesday and Friday evenings, see two different RHB shows! On Wednesday, see talents such as Lola Martinet, Rizzo Rogue, Rosalynn La Roux, Marga Gomez, and Dottie Lux perform. On Friday, see performances by Nomy Lamm, Ruby Rouge, Clavicle Cupcake, Miss Twin Peaks, Vixen Noir, and more!

El Rio is located at 3158 Mission Street in San Francisco (map). Both shows on Wednesday and Friday start at 7:30 p.m., and entry to the shows is on a sliding scale from $5.00 to $10.00.

And on Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at El Rio, there will be a fundraiser for Homobiles, a queer safe ride service in San Francisco. During that time, all bar proceeds will go to Homobiles. For more information about this fundraiser, please visit www.facebook.com/events/156030744514602/.

About our Feature:
Nomy Lamm is a singer, accordion player, performance artist and vocal coach. Her band, nomy lamm & THE WHOLE WIDE WORLD, is a flexible platform for collaboration with everyone and everything, including other musicians, visual artists, puppeteers, poets, spectators, and the moon. She performs regularly with Sins Invalid, creating musical dreamworld performance art about disability, sexuality and social justice. She has toured with Sister Spit and the Sex Workers Art Show, co-created the post-apocalyptic genderqueer rock opera "The Transfused," and last summer had the honor of touring the country with the illustrious unicorn chantreuse, DavEnd. She is currently working on her MFA thesis, a collection of short stories called "515 Clues," and writes an advice column for Make/Shift magazine called "Dear Nomy." Red Hots Burlesque School of Shimmy fall burlesque classes start today!

The Red Hots Burlesque School of Shimmy starts their fall slate of burlesque classes this evening at 7:00 p.m. with Burlesque 101 at Viracocha in San Francisco!

Burlesque 101 is where you want to start if you're new. Other classes will follow, including a hair and makeup class, go-go dancing with Ruby White, Burlesque 201, and Burlesque on a Budget. Upcoming April and May burlesque classes, workshops, and bootcamps

There are quite a few opportunities to learn about performing burlesque coming up. Let's take a look at the classes being offered locally.

Fishnet Follies

This next class is brought to you by Fishnet Follies, which will conduct it starting on April 6. It's a "Sketching Out Your Striptease Solo" class, to be held at Bay Functional Fitness in Oakland, 5255 College Avenue (map). It's a class for those looking to learn about burlesque striptease in a fun and friendly way. Here's the class information...

Learn the sultry art of classic burlesque striptease in a fun and friendly environment! You will learn fundamental burlesque moves, pinup poses, and group dance routines for the Fishnet Follies Burlesque Chorus. You will also get an overview of burlesque history, the current “revival” community, as well as pointers on how to create a burlesque persona, costumes and choreography for your own solo act.

Open to women of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds, 18 years and older. No prior dance experience necessary!

SKETCHING OUT YOUR STRIPTEASE SOLO

In this 4-week series, we will learn the fundamentals of classic burlesque movement and dance (including Mynx d'Meanor's theory of "big circle burlesque"), while working on crafting individual solos derived from your own unique dance (and non-dance) experiences. As usual, instructor Mynx d'Meanor recruits Fishnet Follies Chorus Girls from class, so we will also spend some time on group dance choreography.

Led by Mynx d’Meanor.

Bombshell Betty's Burlesquecise

The next series of classes will be provided by Bombshell Betty. She's introducing a new class, "Burlesqueteer Showgirl Chorus," which will start on April 19! It's a class for those who are looking to find a way to perform with others. The prerequisites for this class are either Betty's Intro to Burlesque or Burlesque Intensive I, so you'll need to have some basic skills already in order to help prepare you to dance with Betty's Burlesqueteers. Classes are on 12 Tuesdays from April 19 until August 2 on which there are no Elbo Room shows. The total cost will be $250 for those classes.

Want or need to take the Intro or Intensive I classes? No sweat! Both are being offered this month. There's an Intro class ($75.00) starting on May 5, and an Intensive I class ($250) starting on April 20! Costume rigging: Putting the FUN in wardrobe malFUNction! Learn Quick Rigging for the Stage This class will identify the major causes of wardrobe malfunctions during performances and how to best avoid them. Both sewing and non-sewing solutions will be offered including learning which closures are the best for which garments. Also covered: Pastie Pop 101- the many ways they stick and don't stick. How do decorate my stretch garment with non stretch trim? How to sparkle in today's economy - more cost effective ways to make an amazing costume.All this and more...

April 25th 7-9pm Choreography with Expert Instructor Alotta Boutte: in SF at Viracocha 998 Valencia St, SF CA:
Get the lessons in bumps, grinds and all those magical moves of burlesque stars from Alotta Boutte who won Best Troupe at Miss Exotic World 2004, and Best Burlesque in both SF Guardian and Eastbay Express. She has graced the pages of 7x7 Magazine as part of the annual "Top 20 under 40." and Jan/Feb 08 issue of Curve Magazine. She has been in productions of Margaret Cho's Sensuous Woman, Miss Exotic World, Tease-O-Rama and Beach Blanket Babylon

Hot Pink Feathers Showgirl Academy

The Hot Pink Feathers are looking for you! Their Intro to World Cabaret/Samba Burlesque Technique class starts on April 9. That's this Saturday! So if you've ever wondered what it would take to dance like the Feathers, now's your chance to find out! Burlesquercise Intensive: Breaking Into the Bump and Grind

In this 12-week intensive, you will learn everything you need to know to get started in burlesque! This course presents ALL the skills and techniques needed for effective burlesque performance in just ONE series. Additional specialty subjects are offered in shorter series, but this will be the most important course to take to get a solid basis for burlesque! By the time you finish this course, you will have a strong foundation i...n burlesque movement, a solid stage persona, and the ability to fully engage your audience while telling your story through burlesque striptease. You'll know secrets to taking it off gracefully without tripping on your frilly nothings, how to incorporate props into your act (including using your clothing as props and twirling nipple tassels), you'll have created signature moves, learned how to invent your own dance moves for the stage, and so much more!

Sept 25th 4pm-6pm as a part of the Russian River Womens Weekend Burlesque 101: In this two-hour workshop, students will learn the history of burlesque, how to create a persona and basic choreography. Sept 26th 12-2pm as a part of the Russian River Womens Weekend Pastie Making and Tassel Twirling: How do we do it?! Impress and amaze with the art of tassel twirling. In the first hour we will go over the history of tassel twirling and you will make your very own pair of pasties with tassels. No materials fees. Supplies will be provided, but if you have a pair of scissors and/or a hot glue gun; bring it! The second hour of class will teach you those much desired and sought out moves to get those tatas-a-twirlin'! We will go over several different methods and find which option works best for you. Be prepared to wear pasties on your body. The class is a safe and respectful environment where students should feel free to toss their inhabitions aside. Sept 28th 7-9pm Burlesque 202 MAKE IT YOU!:Students are encouraged to come with an act or character in mind. We will workshop ideas, and discuss the addition of plot line and telling a story with out words. We will continue to have group exercises and workshopping to include full range of creativity in adapting the written word, pop culture and mainstream media as influences on our burlesque pieces.


Classes at El Rio. Located at 3158 Mission St., San Francisco. In the back room past the bar. Unless otherwise noted. Space is limited and reservations are appreciated and encouraged.

All classes are open to students of any age or gender who want to shake it on stage or in the bedroom. No previous dance or performance experience is required. If you would like to perform at the School of Shimmy Showcase Burlesque 101, 201 and Finshing Touches are mandatory classes. The Fall Showcase will take place on October 15th at 7:30 pm at El Rio as part of the famed weekly show, Red Hots Burlesque.
