Hot Pink Feathers news Spring 2010: SF Carnaval and Showgirl Academy classes!

Carnaval SF is coming soon, and the Hot Pink Feathers will be playing a big part in the celebration. And they want you!

From being a showgirl and dancing with the Hot Pink Feathers during the Carnaval SF parade on May 30, to being a reveler or monitor, you can be a part of the party!

Hot Pink Feathers Showgirl Academy spring classes also start on Tuesday, so whether you want to be a Hot Pink Feather, or just want to participate with the Feathers in the parade, there's a package just for you.

2) CARNAVAL SF 2010 THEME for HPF is "TUDO JOIA" ("Everything's Beautiful"). We are being inspired both with our visuals and our music by CARMEN MIRANDA & JOSEPHINE BAKER. All Carnaval packages described below:

Hot Pink Feathers Showgirl Academy classes and Carnaval SF 2010 preparation

Ever wanted to dance down Mission Street as part of the Carnaval San Francisco Grand Parade in May? Ever wanted to dance with the Hot Pink Feathers? Now's your chance! Hot Pink Feathers' Showgirl Academy classes spring term will be starting next month, and Carnaval SF preparation packages are available.

Who are the Hot Pink Feathers? They are a World Cabaret Showgirl dance troupe. They perform locally at show such as Tuesday's In the Name of Love: Haiti Benefit & Mardi Gras Extravaganza at the Red Devil Lounge (see previous post), burlesque shows such as Friday's Hubba Hubba Revue: Mardi Gras! at the DNA Lounge, and at their own shows with Blue Bone Express at Cafe Van Kleef in Oakland on the first Saturday of every month. Led by Carnaval SF 2008 Queen Kellita, the Hot Pink Feathers were named Best Dance Company by the San Francisco Bay Guardian in their "Best of the Bay 2008" issue. They've appeared on NBC's America's Got Talent, been featured in Margaret Cho's Sensuous Woman variety shows, and performed at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend in Las Vegas, as well as many, many stages in the Bay Area and across the country.

And, yes, this is a special time of the year for HPF. Not only is it Mardi Gras, but they'll also be preparing for the big Carnaval SF 2010 Grand Parade! If you look below, you'll see that they have a special Carnaval prep package, complete with payment plans and a raffle to help defray the costs of participating. You could be dancing down Mission Street as part of the Hot Pink Feathers! All of the class and Carnaval prep information is below. Kellita has just returned from a short sabbatical to Rio and Buenos Aires and I'm sure she's just bursting in anticipation of sharing all of the things she learned with you!

Carnaval San Francisco 2009 this weekend, May 23 and 24

Well, the burlesque scene looks a bit quiet on Saturday and Sunday. The Hot Pink Feathers will be in action during the Grand Parade on Sunday, however! It's their biggest event of the year, with the whole company participating in addition to some revelers. Should be hot! I saw the parade last year, and it was a very memorable good time!

The Carnaval San Francisco Festival runs Saturday and Sunday, May 23 and 24, from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. Located on Harrison Street, between 16th and 22nd streets, the Carnaval San Francisco Festival will offer food, music, dance, art, crafts and other fun activities and events on several stages for the entire family to enjoy. Carnaval San Francisco is just a short walk from the 16th Street BART station.

It's a great chance to look for some costume ideas and just enjoy the cultural diversity of San Francisco. And to eat a lot of yummy food! ;-)

San Francisco area burlesque for the week of May 18, 2009

Whew! Is it hot around here or is it just the burlesque? ;-)

Looks like we got a week for Fromagique! With music and dancers so hot they could make a pizza. If only they had some dough. Ha ha. Yes, there are two opportunities to see them this week. At the Uptown in Oakland on Monday, and Wednesday as they perform at the Varona CD release party at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco.

On Friday, Red Hots Burlesque is free!. And they've got a live band to back up the dancers. Woo hoo!

And this weekend is the big Carnaval SF event with the Hot Pink Feathers parading on Sunday. Here are the vital deets for the week:

• Monday, May 18, 2009: Uptown Hubba Hubba at the Uptown in Oakland, 1928 Telegraph Avenue. Catch the return of Mynx D'Meanor to the Bay Area. And visiting from San Diego, starlet Lady Borgia! Plus it's Burlesqueteer Night, with Bombshell Betty, her Burlesqueteers, Fromagique, and the Fromagettes, including Tiger Von Claus, Tinky Sparkle, Penny Paperback, If-N-Whendy, Bourbon Lee, Foxy Chartreuse, and Flaming June! Wow, that's a lotta show! Doors at 9pm, show at 10:15ish. $5 (not much dough!), 21+ w/ID.


• Wednesday, May 20: Varona CD Release Party with Fromagique at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco, 155 Fell Street. Join Fromagique and Go Van Gough as they celebrate Varona's new CD, "Egoist." With burlesque! $10, 21+ w/ID.


• Friday, May 22: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco, 3158 Mission Street. Join host Lady Monster for a free show! See burlesque performed with live music from Lucifer's Strip Club Band! Starring Dottie Lux, Lily Le Rouge, Isis Starr, Kellita & pick up artist Kiss Me Kate! Show at 7:30pm. Free!!! 21+ w/ID.


• Saturday May 23 and Sunday, May 24: Carnaval SF 2009. Festival at Harrison Street between 16th and 22nd Streets in San Francisco. On Saturday, enjoy seeing the many arts, crafts, entertainers, and taste foods that celebrate Latin American and Caribbean cultures at the festival. Festival hours are 10:00am – 6:00pm. On Sunday, see the Hot Pink Feathers (contingent #17) and many other dancers, performers, and floats in the Grand Parade, which starts at 9:30am at the corner of 24th and Bryant streets where it will proceed west to Mission Street. From there, the parade heads north on Mission down to 17th Street, where it will turn east and flow into the festival area and end about 1:30pm.

Last Minute Notice: Carnaval SF 2009 King and Queen

Last night was a blast, both at the Hypnodrome for the Lily Burana signing and Sugar Shack and at Club Deluxe for Little Minsky's 4th Anniversary Show. I'm trying to work through the inbox today, but last night was so totally worth it!

One of the events mentioned before the Hot Pink Feathers were introduced at Little Minsky's last night was the competition for the King and Queen of Carnaval SF 2009. If you find yourself near Cafe Cocomo tonight, you may want to drop in! Here's the notice from the Queen herself:
