Valentine's Day Weekend 2010: San Francisco Burlesque

Instead of listing this weekend's shows individually, I thought that I'd group them all together in one post. After all, what better way to spend an evening on Valentine's Day weekend with one's sweetheart, friends, or other loved ones than at a show featuring burlesque performers?

This Friday evening, February 12, Red Hots Burlesque will be celebrating their two year anniversary! Yes, it was in 2008 that Dottie Lux moved to San Francisco from New York and started her show here. This week, Dottie has some RHB favorite performers, including Alotta Boutté, Kentucky Fried Woman, Ruby Vixen, and also some visiting stars: Alysia Angel of Portland, and The Shanghai Pearl from Seattle. You may remember The Shanghai Pearl from the documentary, "A Wink and a Smile."

Red Hots Burlesque Presents Happy Birthday Red Hots

It has been 2 years since Red Hots crossed the continent to bring SF a new brand of mayhem and madness! If you have been missing the past few weeks you really should kick yourself, but we'll forgive you you're family at El Rio, so go see your sisters, brothers and cousins at RHB this Friday!

This week we have so much beautiful visiting and debut talent mixed with some home town hotties and Red Hots Favorites. Don't miss this fabulous show!

Red Hots Burlesque celebrates TWO years at El Rio and they've been seeing sold out shows since the new year! Enjoy this highly acclaimed show, you know if you miss one week, you'll be kicking yourself! Freaky and filthy film reel brought to you by Val Killmore and DJ Alex BIG Cox brings you tantalizing tunage!

Very special visiting guests:
Alysia Angel, Portland

More about our visiting and debut performers:

Alysia Angel is lone wolf in a socialite body, a femme whisperer who flags sham-ow on the left. She is currently on tour with her series of books titled "What I Do When You're Not Looking" and really wants to come to your town too. When not writing and hustling, you can find her creeping in alleys and drinking fine whiskey at old timer bars. Alysia is not for the faint of heart.

Jukie Sunshine is San Francisco's "It Girl"!! You may have seen her lovely queer fat femme face and figure performing burlesque in SF and across the country since 2001. This cover girl has graced local mags other and Size Queen, as well as international rags Juxtapoz, Bizarre (UK) and The New Yorker! Perhaps you caught her shaking it on the boob tube on KQED's Spark! or one of her three appearances on Entertainment Tonight. Did you get an eyeful of her photographs taken by Leonard Nimoy (Google it!!)? She is an educator, activist and artist who wants you to love yourself naked in front of the mirror...jukie sunshine!

Mangos With Chili knows that queer and trans folks of color do love, sex and total disaster like none other! In this special Valentine's Day weekend production QTPOC will tell their true life stories of love, desire and disaster through music, spoken word, theater, hip hop, dance, burlesque, drag and film. Bring a trinket for the altar we'll build to the loves we've lost, known, and are praying for, and come prepared to hear truths you've never heard spoken before but always needed to.

Mangos With Chili is a Bay Area based arts organization committed to showcasing high quality performance of life saving importance by queer and trans artists of color to audiences in the Bay Area and beyond. Founded in 2006 by Leah Lakshmi Piepzna-Samarasinha and Ms Cherry Galette, Mangos With Chili features a revolving cast of QTPOC artists and has performed to sold out houses across North America, wowing audiences in world class theaters, underground performance spaces, bars, and campus halls, with their high intensity, breathtaking performance, politics, and storytelling craft, reflecting the lives and stories of queer and trans people of color, while making art that speaks out in resistance to the daily struggles around silence, isolation, homophobia, and violence that QTPOC face.

Mangos With Chili is a fiscally sponsored project of the San Francisco based arts organization CounterPULSE, which provides space and resources for emerging artists and cultural innovators: www.counterpulse.org. Production of Whipped is supported by the Horizons Foundation, the Astraea Foundation, and the generous support of our community of donors.

The show contains material of adult nature. Parental discretion advised. Please refrain from wearing scented products to ensure that audience members and performers with multiple chemical sensitivity can attend.
