Red Hots Burlesque: Twisted Tradition in Berkeley on Wednesday, SF Beach Party on Friday

This week, Red Hots Burlesque has two shows to tempt you. One in the East Bay on Wednesday, and the other at their usual spot in San Francisco on Friday!

At the new Space Lounge in the Saturn Cafe in Berkeley, Red Hots presents "Twisted Tradition!" See the artwork of Spygirl Friday on the walls of the Lounge while you marvel at the her talents and those of the Diamond Daggers, La Chica Boom, Ruby Vixen, and more!

Then listen and dance to the sounds of the Dixieland Dykes +3! It's sure to be a humdinger of a show at the Space Lounge. Arrive early and grab some grub! They've got a healthy vegetarian menu, and delicious milkshakes too! See their menu on their site at saturncafe.com. The Saturn Cafe is located at 2175 Allston Way in Berkeley (map), really close to the Downtown Berkeley BART station!

And I do believe this is an 18 and older venue, so college students are welcome! The last burlesque show at the Saturn Cafe was 18+, and the show was filled with a very enthusiastic crowd, so I expect this show to be rockin' too!

Known as "the old world band with the new math problem," the Dixieland Dykes +3 have stomped, rambled & wailed their way through Dixieland tunes at fundraisers, civic events and weddings around the Bay Area since 1994. DD+3 is a regular feature at the Annual Pride Brunch, hosted by Donna Sachet and Gary Virginia, and at the Castro Lions' Dragathon at Marlena's. They most recently headlined at Trax Bar's 10th anniversary celebration, and played gutter bucket jazz at the Red Hots Burlesque Cooch tent at the Castro Street Fair. Other credits include the Gala holiday reception of the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band's Dance-Along Nutcracker, the Ol' Fashioned 4th of July Alternative Family Picnic at Yerba Buena Gardens, Supervisor Tom Ammiano's 1998 Victory Party, AIDS Benefits Counselors annual soiree, and numerous fundraisers at The Edge and Trax, to name a few. Her works, which span various mediums, are each concerned with the task of making trash into treasure. They are ceaselessly formed in answer to the rather specific artistic challenge of how to make something beautiful and valuable out of materials and visual cultures considered worthless (discarded wood, discontinued film stocks, images from magazines donated to charity shops, etc.) Spy is fixated on re-presenting out-dated or marginalized materials and images (unearthed from second-rate 1970s porn magazines or photographs found on roadsides) in the languages of fine art in an attempt to question the manners in which these items (and their respective lives) were first made expendable. Correspondingly, her work not only demands that we recognize the ethics implied in our relationships with such detritus, but that we see the beauty inherent in these items' faded shines.

Planet Burlesque comes to Berkeley's Saturn Cafe on Thursday, October 21

This Thursday, burlesque beams down to the brand, spankin' new Saturn Cafe in Berkeley for the premiere of Planet Burlesque in the Space Lounge.

Kingfish and Zip the What-Is-It? of the Hubba Hubba Revue will bring their space-aged zaniness to Berkeley, and the town will never be the same! Be dazzled by the whirling deep-space dervish that is Delilah. Watch in amazement at the astronomical talents of Alotta Boutté. Get krazed by that komet known as Kitten Kandy. Be blasted away by Bunny Pistol. Get stunned to death by the photon torpedo that is Francine Dead. See all these performers and more, including a burlesque photography show by that photographer to the stars, Mr. Johnny Crash!

This show will be one of the few which have a lower age limit of 18, so that means that most Cal students can cross over Strawberry Creek to see a burlesque show. And it's only $5! Inexpensive enough to fit into a student's entertainment budget!

It's all happening at the new Saturn Cafe in Berkeley. Before the show, you can get some grub at this space-age vegetarian diner. Nachos, salads, burgers, sweet potato fries, mac n' cheese, and more make this the healthy alternative to dining out. And don't forget the milkshakes! I've heard they're out of this world! You can see their menu on their website at www.saturncafe.com.

It appears that there will be a monthly burlesque show at the Saturn Cafe. On Wednesday, November 17, Red Hots Burlesque will stage a show at the Space Lounge. Yay for Berkeley burlesque!

Neo-burlesque is an interesting juxtaposition of the modern and retro. As John C. McCall of Cabaret Decadence has said in a Planetshifter.com interview concerning mythographic mapping of Planet Burlesque:
We don't reenact the past, we reinvent it. We like to say "we travel the past not take (sic)" - in doing so we create a kind of provocative nostalgia for pleasures not available from the store, and lives not alienated from meaning. For the seeker, the deeper mysteries are developed further in the "para-performative" mythographics that can be traced in our web presence.
How true that is! Even though that's referring to a different Planet Burlesque, it seems appropriate here. And it's so thought-provoking! It's deep, man. And you are indeed reading a para-performative work of art, by the way.

So this Thursday in Berkeley, boldly go back in time to where no burlesque audience has gone before! Head on over to the Saturn Cafe at warp speed, and make it a night on Planet Burlesque with your crew!

Burlesque Moulin flier, July 22, 2010

Hubba Hubba Revue and Shotgun Cabaret featured in Berkeley Daily Planet

There's a really cool article about Hubba Hubba Revue and Shotgun Cabaret in today's (November 5, 2009) issue of the Berkeley Daily Planet, written by Ken Bullock.

In the interview, Kingfish, also known as Jim Sweeney, talks about how this Saturday's show will be a scripted play about how people put on a burlesque show, the appeal of burlesque, how the Shotgun Players become involved, and about the various aspects of the burlesque scene in the Bay Area.

It's a good read. Check it out!

San Francisco area burlesque for the week of November 2, 2009

This week, it looks like there will be a plethora of shows in the East Bay on Saturday. A veritable cornucopia of burlesque riches!

Hubba Hubba Revue (www.hubbahubbarevue.com) will be invading Berkeley as they take over the Shotgun Players' Ashby Stage on Saturday, November 7. There will be two shows at 8 and 10pm, each 1 hour and 45 minutes long. Among the performers will be Bunny Pistol, Pin Key Lee, Sid Scenic, and McPuzo and Trotsky.
