Some upcoming burlesque-related events of interest

  • Bay Area National Dance Week includes a special free class with the Devil-Ettes from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 30 at the Queer Ballroom at Live Art Gallery, 151 Potrero Avenue, San Francisco. "Ever wanted to learn how to do the Twist, Watusi, Pony, or Mashed Potato? Learn those and more in this high-energy 1960s Go-Go class with San Francisco's Sweethearts, The Devil-Ettes! This class is open to all levels, ages, and genders! Participants will be led through a gentle warm-up, taught a selection of classic '60s go-go moves, and even learn a short routine! Bring comfortable clothes, water, and get ready to Go-Go with us!" Sign up for this class at www.bayareandw.org.

  • The Devil-Ettes will also be performing at the May Day CounterPULSE benefit on that same Saturday at CounterPULSE at 9th and Mission in San Francisco. Tickets are $25.00 to $150.00. For more information, please visit counterpulse.org.

  • The Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend 2011 will be happening on June 2-5 at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. You may purchase a weekend pass online burlesquehall.tix.com (try #earlybird as the promotional code, which may provide 20% off) and a room at the Orleans by using the BHoF's Group ID #1BHFC06, which should provide rooms at the conference's rate before April 29. Call them at 800-ORLEANS (800-675-3267).

  • The BHoF is also sponsoring a Legends Challenge to help some of the Living Legends of Burlesque to attend the Weekend in Las Vegas. This year, there will be several opportunities to help local legends. The first happens at the next Curvicious Cabaret show on Wednesday, May 4, at the Blue Macaw in San Francisco. Ellion Ness, Viva La Fever, and Madame E will be the legends who will be supported. Naked Girls Reading San Francisco: Burlesque Legends on Sunday, May 15, at the Center for Sex and Culture is another show which will benefit Satans Angel. Bay Area National Dance Week events on Tuesday, April 27

Did you know that this week is Bay Area National Dance Week? It is indeedy! And there are several free events that have ties to burlesque.

On Tuesday, the Hot Pink Feathers will be hosting free classes at the Ballet Studio in San Francisco:

Also on Tuesday, Swing Goth will be having a free class along with a free open dance at the Blue Macaw in San Francisco. You may remember Swing Goth from the Ball of Justice/Comic Strip show that they produced in conjunction with Fishnet Follies (see previous post). Here are the details from Brian Gardner:

It's National Dance Week and there's all sorts of activities in and around SF. Most of them (including ours) are listed here: http://www.bayareandw.org/

Swing Goth is a re-appropriation of partner dancing updating both instruction and technique to the modern era. We may not do things like your grandfather or grandmother used to, but we do capture the fun they had.... and we do it while dancing to Franz Ferdinand, The Killers, Gorilaz, The Smiths, Depeche Mode, etc.

Beginner dance lessons are no partner or experience required, and in the spirit of the week, the beginners lessons are FREE for this week. The open dance from 9-1am is always FREE.

Beyond Beginner Lessons are $8 for singles or $12 for couples. For these classes a partner is preferred preferred, so come on, every guy grab a girl... everywhere around the world...

By request, Beyond Beginner lessons will be a recap of all of the twists and turns and lifts and dips that we've learned to-date.

Hot Pink Feathers Kick-Off to Bay Area National Dance Week

It's the busy season for the Hot Pink Feathers! This Friday, they are participating in a kick-off event for Bay Area National Dance Week. They'll be at Union Square Plaza on Friday, April 24. The event starts at noon, and will also feature other performers. The Feathers will bring their All-Star Band to lead a conga line at approximately 12:45.

SF Bay Area burlesque for the week of April 20, 2009

It's a bit quiet this week in terms of amount of shows, but there are some quality ones upcoming. Bombshell Betty and her Burlequeteers will be at Uptown Hubba Hubba on Monday along with Fromagique. The Hot Pink Feathers will be helping to kick off Bay Area National Dance Week in Union Square. The weekly Red Hots Burlesque show will be on Friday evening at El Rio. And the Diamond Daggers are presenting a book release party/show on Saturday at Fat City. They'll have lots of quality performers there. And maybe Lady Monster will twirl her fire tassels! Only one way to find out....

  • Monday, April 20, 2009: Uptown Hubba Hubba at the Uptown in Oakland, 1928 Telegraph Avenue. It's time for Bombshell Betty's Burlesqueteers and Fromagique! Join the fun and frivolity with Bombshell Betty, Holly Highbeams, Sneak-A-Peek Sally, Red Velvet, If-N-Wendy, and Tiger Von Klaus along with the cheesy band! Doors at 9pm, show at 10:15ish. $5, 21+ w/ID.

  • Friday, April 24: Bay Area National Dance Week Kick-Off w/Hot Pink Feathers and others at Union Square in San Francisco. Join Queen Kellita, the Hot Pink Feathers, and the Hot Pink Feathers All-Star Band as they lead a conga line at 12:45pm. The official kick-off event. Free. All ages.

  • Also Friday: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco, 3158 Mission Street. Dottie Lux brings you a different show every single week! Each event promises the seductive and spicy, absurd and amusing all from local and visiting talent. Show at 7:30pm. $5-10 sliding scale, 21+ w/ID.

  • Saturday, April 25: Femme Follies at Fat City in SF, 314 11th Street. The Official Bay Area Book Release Party for Femmes of Power: Exploding Queer Femininities. Featuring performances from Simone de la Getto, Jukie Sunshine, Kentucky Fried Woman & Savory Sweet, Alotta Boutte, Vixen Noir, Celestina Pearl & Meliza Banales, Shawna Virago, Lady Monster, Twilight Vixen Revue, Dirty Phoenix, DJ Chelsea Starr, Femcee Amelia Mae Paradise and many more of the gals featured in the book. With music, art and fashion Doors at 9pm, show at 10:30. $12-20 sliding scale, 21+ w/ID.
