San Francisco Bay Area burlesque for June 16 - June 22, 2011

Here is this week's schedule of burlesque around the Bay. If you know of some shows that aren't on here, please let me know! Facebook recently remodeled their events listings, and some show invites weren't returned to my list, so I may be missing a show or two. But of the shows that are still on my calendar, there looks to be some "can't miss" events coming up.

This is the weekend that World Famous *BOB* visits the Bay Area once again. Although she lived here for a while, she's visiting from New York City, so catch her while you can! She'll be performing at Red Hots Burlesque on Friday, RHB and Burlesque Moulin's Dog and Pony Show on Saturday, and she'll be conducting workshops on Sunday. Please see previous post for details.

Another unusual event will be the Hubba Hubba Revue's Flying Saucer Beach Party on Father's Day at the DNA Lounge. What makes it unique is that it's a daytime show! Doors open at 2:00 p.m., and the show goes on until 8:00 p.m. There will be burlesque, some kind of swimsuit contest, dancing, music, special guests, and more! Bring your father to the show!

If you'll be in the East Bay this Saturday night, this will be the place to be... to see pirate burlesque! Arrrr, mateys! Among the performers will be some members of Bombshell Betty's Burlesqueteers.

For all of you folks in the Santa Cruz area, the Sin Sisters Burlesque will be once again performing at the Catalyst Club on Saturday. This time, they'll be performing in the Atrium with band Beso Negro!

BURLESQUE ‘N’ BRASS:
Dubbed "the coolest jazz brass band in Northern California" by the San Francisco Chronicle, Oakland-based Blue Bone Express exposes the Bay Area to a type of jazz rarely heard beyond the Mississippi Delta. Combined with award-winning Hot Pink Feathers’ World Carnaval Cabaret dance, this explosive cabaret performance fuses music and dance traditions spanning the early-1900's New Orleans parades to the showgirl plumage of 1950's Rio de Janeiro Carnaval, the culture-clash hilarity of the '70s and '80s, and pushing through the present-day post-modern meltdown that is downtown Oakland.

“If you've never had the pleasure of seeing burlesque dancing performed to live jazz, then this is the place to start. It's like slugging down a pint of Uncle Peppy's moonshine after ten years of Nestea. It's sexy, spunky, sassy retro fun with all the heart and soul of Rio de Janeiro and the French Quarter, right there in downtown Oaktown. If you're looking for the perfect date, the perfect diversion, or just a chance to see an eminently sexy group of gifted hoofers grinding to hot jazz played by true enthusiasts, order a whiskey sour and settle into your seat for one of the best evenings the Bay Area has to offer.” ~Thomas Roche

FROM NYC ROSIE 151
and our Featured Performer for the month of JUNE...LADY SATAN

About our debut performer Ariyana Le Fay:

Ariyana La Fey has danced, acted, and flown through the air all over the Bay Area, as well as such exotic locales as New York and Berlin. Trapped between dilettante and polymath, you might see her one night on stage and the next aloft in the aerial silks, or kicking up her heels on a go-go box. Ariyana is a founding member of the Hubba Hubba Revue, where she can always be found wrangling go-go dancers and aerialists alike, and occasionally taking to the stage herself. When she's not performing, Ariyana has been known to engage in tea drinking, costume building, and shameless cat canoodling.

About our visiting performer NYC's ROSIE 151:

From the Volcanic Island of Amadrini, Rosie 151 was raised on the most intoxicating rum in the world. When the Island began to erupt Rosie escaped just in the nick of time, making her way to New York City. With only a few casts of rum and her favorite bikini Rosie found work in some of NYC's most fabulous night spots, and soon became one of the city's finest burlesque stars. Rosie 151 has been serving up strong doses of hottness all over NYC since her first highly addictive performance as Marijuana Girl at the Slipper Room in 2006. Since then Rosie has been intoxicating fans from Coney Island to the Bronx with her sultry dancing. All anyone needs is a shot of Rosie to see she is a strong burlesque presence. One hundred and fifty one proof to be exact.

Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend 2011: Day 2

Stuff from the second day of the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend. It's been a busy Weekend with socializing, shows, and educational events, but here's a brief rundown of what the second day is like.

  • The second day of the BHoF Weekend is filled with events associated with the Legends of Burlesque. It's one of the more significant parts of the Weekend, which includes performers of the 1950's, '60s, and '70s. The evening's show is filled with performances from burlesque artists such as Dee Milo, Judith Stein, Kitten Natividad, and many more (full lineup at http://burlesquehall.com/2011/04/fridaynight/). It made for a wonderful show, as the audience truly loves and appreciates their predecessors.
  • There was a premiere also of the film, "Erotic World and the Burlesque Revival." It's a documentary about the evolution of the burlesque museum started by Jennie Lee and then Dixie Evans. If you're a fan of the art form, you'll want to see it when it's released. They're also seeking funding to help with the release of the film via their Kickstarter page. The film is a wonderful look at how the museum started, and includes footage from some of the earliest pageants which include perfomers who we all know and love!
  • The Grant Avenue Follies of San Francisco closed the show!
  • Meeting with the Legends, through being a volunteer who is to assist VIPs and the Legends or through random encounters, was my favorite parts of the Weekend. Amongst the Legends whom I met were Dee Milo, Judith Stein, and Toni Elling. They were also so friendly and warm!
  • The social aspect is one of the big attractions of these events. Not only is it a way to get to hang out with those from your own area, but you also get to know people from other areas of the world. There are performers from Japan, Australia, Canada, and various countries in Europe.
  • Daytime classes presented by BurlyCon included class from Legends, which have always been popular. A list of the classes presented may be found at burlesquehall.com/2011/04/classes/.
  • Among the popular activities for performers is shopping. Since Las Vegas has so many stage shows, there are a lot of stores and swap meets and flea markets in the area at which many treasures for one's wardrobe may be found.
  • The pool is also a popular place for people to gather and socialize during the daytime.
  • Some people will also take a free shuttle to the Las Vegas Strip to visit the casinos during their free time.

That's it for now. The evening's Tournament of Tease will be kicking off in less than 90 minutes, and I'll need to get dinner and change into my evening attire before then.

Sparkly Devil will be our area's contender, so the whole Bay Area contingent will be cheering for her! The Dolls of Doom of which San Francisco resident Lola Martinet is a part will also be competing for "Best Group."

Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend 2011: Day 1

It was the first full day of the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend today, and lots of attendees have already arrived. I've already been asked about what's going on by some of my fellow casino guests, who are puzzled by all of the people dressed up.

This will be a short post, as I've volunteered to help set up the Burlesque Bazaar tomorrow morning. But these are some of my thoughts and observations on what's happened so far.
  • The hotel pool area was a popular destination among attendees. Drinks and sunscreen lotion were flowing freely in the desert sun. There wasn't much to do before the show tonight, so that's where most of the action happened during the day.
  • More of the SF Bay Area burlesque participants have arrived, with several more due in tomorrow. RJ Johnson and Johnny Crash were taking photographs at the show tonight, which means there may be some photos on the way.
  • Speaking of the Movers, Shakers, and Innovators show, there were many memorable acts. One of them involved an unraveling outfit, Jonny Porkpie had a humorous routine including the soundtrack of a couple doing play-by-play of his act as if it were a sporting event. Clams Casino had a shadow-based act that ended up with her breaking through a silhouette that she had drawn on a simulated mirror frame. Miss Mary Cyn had a Joker-themed act set to the song, "People Are Strange."And of course, our own Kingfish of the Hubba Hubba Revue gave his usual outstanding performance as one of the emcees.
  • Tomorrow is a bigger, full day as I start off volunteering at the Burlesque Bazaar at 9:45 a.m.. There are some daytime things to do, such as autograph session, Then the day wraps up with the big "Titans of Tease" Burlesque Reunion Showcase in the evening with a screening of "Exotic World and the Burlesque Revival."

San Francisco Bay Area burlesque for June 2 - June 8, 2011

Ah, back at the Java Vegas outlet at the Orleans. And since it's morning of Day One of the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend, I've noticed a lot of attendees here. In fact, I'm sharing a table with Baby Blue Bergman of Sydney who performed in our area several weeks ago.
