San Francisco Bay Area burlesque for April 21 - April 27, 2011

Hey, what is that Hunky Jesus doing? Ooh, that's right! He's preparing for the contest. It's time for Easter!

Along with the famous Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence famous Easter in the Park: Old Habits Dye Hard at Dolores Park, there is a week of burlesque to look forward to!

This would be a good place to remind all you of you who use Twitter to keep up with the SFBR's Twitter feed (@sfpartymaster) to follow SF burlesque news. I'll post items on there that may not require a full article or are last-minute kinds of items. I'll also include items from the larger burlesque community that are of interest.

So, now back to this week's shows! There are only four on the calendar, and Alotta Boutté is in two of them on the same night: Red Hots Burlesque and the Hubba Hubba Revue's San Francisco Show on Friday! You can make like Alotta and do both shows, as the Hubba Hubba show starts an hour after the Red Hots show ends. It could make for a long evening, so rest up!

On Monday, Pink Flamingo and the Mai Tais will be performing a full set of Mary Poppins-inspired routines at the Hubba Hubba Revue show at the Uptown in Oakland. Outstanding! In case you're wondering, Pink Flamingo is the dancer, and the Mai Tais are the band. Check out the photos on their Facebook Page, then check them out at the Uptown on Monday night.

Well, that's about it for this week. I'll be back soon with more information about shows, the activities surrounding the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend 2011, and more! Have a great week, everybody! :-)

Dr. Sketchy's SF presents the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence this Tuesday, April 19

Ever seen a Sister of Perpetual Indulgence and thought, "Yeah, I'd like to sketch that Sister!" Well, your opportunity is here! No more running after them asking them to stop on the street while you sketch them. This Tuesday, they'll be posing for you at 111 Minna Gallery as Dr. Sketchy's San Francisco presents the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence from 7:00 to 10:00 p.m.!

If you've never been to a Dr. Sketchy event, it's like a drawing class on enhancements. You have the guest model/performer present who will engage in various poses for lengthening amounts of time. There's usually music playing and contests, so the mood is upbeat. And during the breaks, you can chat with your fellow artists or get something to drink at the bar. Very cool!

Also, if you have been experiencing some difficulties with your drawings, Diane Olivier is here to help! From 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. at 111 Minna, she will be conducting a clinic for those who are seeking assistance. Email Diane with a list of your symptoms, and pay $20.00 (which includes front row seats at Dr. Sketchy's). The clinic is limited to 12 participants, so email her today! A full description of the clinic is below in the event description.

So this Tuesday, bring your favorite drawing materials to 111 Minna Gallery, which is located at 111 Minna Street in San Francisco (map). Though the event starts at 7:00, I'd recommend people arrive by 6:30 to get a good place to sketch. The cost to attend is now $12.00 general, and $10.00 for students and teachers. You also need to be 21 years of age or older to participate.

Dr. Sketchy's SF flier, April 19, 2011

Dr Sketchy’s Anti Art School: San Francisco presents The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence!

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence® is a leading-edge Order of queer nuns. Since our first appearance in San Francisco on Easter Sunday, 1979, the Sisters have devoted ourselves to community service, ministry and outreach to those on the edges, and to promoting human rights, respect for diversity and spiritual enlightenment. We believe all people have a right to express their unique joy and beauty and we use humor and irreverent wit to expose the forces of bigotry, complacency and guilt that chain the human spirit.

Bombshell Betty performs in Cabaret Lunatique's "Celebrate North Beach" this Saturday, April 16

Bombshell Betty, one of San Francisco's most notable ecdysiasts, will be performing this Saturday night with Cabaret Lunatique, which is the late night, music, burlesque, and cabaret part of Teatro ZinZanni.

This year's series of performances will focus on San Francisco's neighborhoods. The series kicked off last month with "Celebrate Chinatown," featuring The Shanghai Pearl. This next show, "Celebrate North Beach," will star Bombshell Betty and other local performers such as comedian Jeff Applebaum, interpreters of Argentine Tango Trio Garufa, aerialist Marina Luna, contortionist Dwoira Scheffer, and Teatro ZinZanni star and favorite Christine Deaver. Plus more!

And, yes, there will only be one performance of this show, and it will be this Saturday night! The lobby doors open at 11:15 p.m., so the show will probably start close to midnight. It's great timing if you're getting out of an earlier show and are looking for something fun to do late at night.

But keep in mind that these shows have a tendency to sell out. So grab your tickets now! You may buy them at their box office, by telephone at (415) 438-2668, or online at cabaretlunatique.org. Their reasonable priced at $25.00 for general seating, and $35.00 for preferred.

The show will be in Teatro ZinZanni's fanastic Speigeltent at Pier 29 on the Embarcadero at Battery Street (map). You may find neighborhood parking nearby, but be attentive to local parking signs.

“CELEBRATE NORTH BEACH”

Teatro ZinZanni announces Cabaret Lunatique’s second installment in a series of nine late-night cabarets each focusing on a distinctive San Francisco neighborhood. First launched in 2008, Teatro ZinZanni’s cabarets all sold out and are now back by popular demand. The new series began in March with “Celebrate Chinatown” and a further seven additional evenings ar e scheduled for the remainder of the year focusing on the neighborhoods of the Mission, Castro, Fillmore/Jazz, Haight Ashbury, SOMA, On the Waterfront and The Hills.

“Celebrate North Beach” is the second cabaret of 2011 and features local artists from the Bay Area including comedian Jeff Applebaum; interpreters of Argentine Tango Trio Garufa; aerialist Marina Luna; contortionist Dwoira Scheffer; and ZinZanni favorite Christine Deaver. They will be joined by sizzling burlesque performer Bombshell Betty (pictured); tango dancers Julian & Lisette; and clown Aji Slater.

Cabaret Lunatique continues April 16 with “Celebrate North Beach.” Doors to the lobby will open at 11:15 PM. Admission is $35 for premium and $25 general admission.

Eddie Dane Memorial shows coming up Thursday, April 14, and Friday, April 29

Friends and fans of the late Eddie Dane will be gathering together in the next few weeks to celebrate the life and achievements of one of the true pioneers of the neo-burlesque movement. And one of the leaders of the Hubba Hubba Revue, too.

This Thursday, the DNA Lounge will be hosting the Eddie Dane Memorial Bash! It's a free event with a suggested donation of $5.00. There will be lots of performances from Sparkly Devil, Honey Lawless, Bunny Pistol, and many more of the famous performers that came to know Eddie Dane through burlesque.

There will be some sadness with the memories that will be recalled, but there will also be lots of laughter for sure, because that is what Eddie Dane wanted: Laughter from the audience. Even if he had to get into a pink bunny suit (photo by RJ Johnson)!

There will also be music from the Hi-Rhythm Hustlers! And there will be dance music, also, provided by DJ Tanoa Samoa Boy.

So this Thursday, head on over to the DNA Lounge to help celebrate one of the greats of San Francisco Bay Area burlesque: Eddie Dane. The doors will open at 8:00 p.m., and the show will start at 9:00. DNA Lounge is located at 375 Eleventh Street (map). If you have $5.00 to donate, bring it, otherwise just bring yourself and a some friends to remember and celebrate Eddie's life.

MORE ABOUT BURLESQUE N BRASS:
Dubbed "the coolest jazz brass band in Northern California" by the San Francisco Chronicle, Oakland-based Blue Bone Express exposes the Bay Area to a type of jazz rarely heard beyond the Mississippi Delta. Combined with award-winning Hot Pink Feathers’ World Carnaval Cabaret dance, this explosive cabaret performance fuses music and dance traditions spanning the early-1900's New Orleans parades to the showgirl plumage of 1950's Rio de Janeiro Carnaval, the culture-clash hilarity of the '70s and '80s, and pushing through the present-day post-modern meltdown that is downtown Oakland.

“If you've never had the pleasure of seeing burlesque dancing performed to live jazz, then this is the place to start. It's like slugging down a pint of Uncle Peppy's moonshine after ten years of Nestea. It's sexy, spunky, sassy retro fun with all the heart and soul of Rio de Janeiro and the French Quarter, right there in downtown Oaktown. If you're looking for the perfect date, the perfect diversion, or just a chance to see an eminently sexy group of gifted hoofers grinding to hot jazz played by true enthusiasts, order a whiskey sour and settle into your seat for one of the best evenings the Bay Area has to offer.” Thomas Roche

Red Hots Burlesque's Friday show and Saturday's Dr. Sketchy's East Bay premiere!

If you've been a subscriber of Dottie Lux's weekly newsletter or been going to the shows, you've been keeping track of the growth of Red Hots Burlesque. What was once a weekly show on Friday evenings at El Rio is now one of several RHB programs. And this week will see the continued evolution of this phenomenon.

This Thursday evening saw the premiere of the monthly show of "Go Deep: Let's Wrestle" which was the first of the monthly RHB shows featuring lube wrestling and burlesque. The next one will be happening on May 5, which will be Cinco de Mayo! So start making your plans now!

This Friday, you can still catch the original Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio. This week's lineup will include some out-of-towners including Vixen Valentine and Lowa de BoomBoom of Seattle! Plus you'll get to experience local burlesque favorite such as Simone Campbell, Delilah, The Empress, Cyanide Cyn, and RHB's very own Dottie Lux!

And don't forget that on May 4, Red Hots will be expanding to both Wednesdays and Fridays of the week!

El Rio is located at 3158 Mission Street in San Francisco (map). It's a bit of a walk from the 24th Street station, but it's doable. The show starts at 7:30 p.m., so get there early to get a good seat! Cover is from $5.00 to $10.00 on a sliding scale, and you'll need to be 21 to purchase drinks at the bar.

And, finally, Red Hots Burlesque is producing the East Bay version of Dr. Sketchy's. This anti-art school that got it's beginnings in burlesque is screamingly successful, and is now found in over 100 cities in 16 countries on five continents. That's quite a successful almost six-year run! And if you've been to any of the San Francisco events lately, you can see why it's successful. Live models in amazing outfits for you to draw!

Now, those of you artists in the East Bay don't need to travel across a bridge to attend a Dr. Sketchy's, since RHB is bringing Dr. Sketchy's to the East Bay! This Saturday, Dr. Sketchy's East Bay premieres at the Layover Lounge in Oakland, from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The guest models and performers will be The Can-Cannibals!

The Layover Lounge is located at 1517 Franklin Street in Oakland (map). It's a couple of blocks away from the 19th Street BART station, and there should be plenty of street parking around. The event starts at 4:00, so get there early to get a good seat!
