"Behind the Burly Q" to screen in San Francisco, July 22-25, 2010

Written and directed by Leslie Zemeckis, the documentary "Behind the Burly Q" is a comprehensive look into burlesque's past, where stars such as Evangeline the Oyster Girl, Blaze Starr, Lili St. Cyr, Dixie Evans, Sally Rand and Tempest Storm joined with the popular musicians and comedians of the day to dazzle American audiences.

The film is a mix of interviews and archival footage of performances. It's a must-see if you're a fan and want to hear about what burlesque was like when it was a wildly popular form of entertainment!

The San Francisco screenings will take place July 22-25 in the screening room of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, located on 3rd Street between Mission and Howard. Thursday through Saturday, there will be a 7:30pm showing each day. On Sunday, there will be two showings, one at 4pm and the next at 6pm. Tickets are $8 and may be purchased in advance and online at www.ybca.org/tickets/production/view.aspx?id=11572.

Burlesque and vaudeville acts were America's most popular form of live entertainment in the first half of the 20th century — until cinema drove them from the mainstream. To add insult to injury, the art of burlesque became vilified and misunderstood, and was largely left out of our cultural history. By telling the intimate and surprising stories from its golden age through the women (and men!) who lived it, Behind the Burly Q reveals the true story of burlesque, even as it experiences a new renaissance. Vote for your favorite burlesque performers for SFBG Best of the Bay 2010 today!

Today's the last day to vote for the San Francisco Bay Guardian's Best of the Bay 2010! Among the categories that are relevant are "Best Dance Company," "Best Burlesque Act," "Best Drag Queen or King," "Best Singer/Songwriter," "Best Local Band," and probably others for which you could vote for your favorite burlesque performers and venues. Most of these are on the second page of the survey.

I may as well put in a plug for "Best Local Blog!" Ha ha. It's the first category under "5. City Living." You can cut and paste "San Francisco Burlesque Review (sfburlesque.blogspot.com)". Thank you in advance! :)

Happy voting!

San Francisco area burlesque for June 23 to June 29, 2010

This is the second week in a row in which we'll see a variety of shows in San Francisco and Oakland. Next week, the shows will be a bit scarcer, so be greedy and catch all the shows you can this week!

Satans Angel's Ta Ta Flambé Tour will pretty much wrap up this week. It will be the last chance to see the legendary Satans Angel before she moves to Australia. She'll be performing her one-woman play "Have Tassles, Will Travel" Wednesday at Cafe du Nord, then she'll be at Dark Horse Cabaret at Cafe du Nord on Thursday, performing at Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio on Friday, and participating in the Dyke March and SF Pride Parade this Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The Rose City Rendevous Tour will be making it's way through the Bay Area. This collection of Portland's best burlesque performers will be at Femina Potens Gallery in SF on Wednesday, Dark Room in SF on Thursday, and at the Hubba Hubba Revue show at the Uptown Nightclub in Oakland on Monday.

Fou Fou Ha's "The Dynamite Show" will be continuing from Thursday through Saturday at the Brava Theater in SF.

On Friday, Original Sin Burlesque will be performing with some bands at the Rockit Room in San Francisco, sASSy's Seaside Burlesque will be at Winters Tavern in Pacifica, and the Gypsy Nomads will be special guests at Baxtalo Drom's show at Amnesia in SF.

Whew! Lots of shows, lots of choices to make. Enjoy this week of burlesque goodness!

After the glory of fame comes the downfall, but she rises like a Phoenix, and back to being the "Legend of the Year" in the Burlesque Hall of Fame in Las Vegas! Bay Area burlesque performers to appear at Toronto and Colorado burlesque festivals

Congratulations to Kiss Me Kate, Lady Monster, Delilah of San Francisco and Flame Cynders of Oakland! They have been selected to perform in the Toronto Burlesque Festival this year! In addition, Satan's Angel will be a special guest of the Festival.

Toronto's festival seems to be growing to become one of the more prominent in North America. Since it's relatively close to New York, there seems to be a significant Big Apple influence, but there are performers from around the U.S., Canada, and even from Japan and New Zealand!

The festival runs from Thursday, July 21, to Sunday, July 25, this year. For more details, please visit www.torontoburlesquefestival.com.

And congratulations also to Honey Lawless of Oakland, who has been selected to perform at the inaugural Colorado Burlesque Festival! It is happening from Thursday, July 8 through Sunday, July 11, in Denver.

Satan's Angel Ta Ta Flambé Tour comes to San Francisco

Satan's Angel, also known as "The Devil's Own Mistress" and "Queen of the Fire Tassels," will be starting her American farewell Ta Ta Flambé Tour this week in San Francisco.

A beloved legendary burlesque performer who started her career in San Francisco during the 1960s, Satan's Angel will be appearing in burlesque shows, teaching classes, and making appearances at various venues around the Bay Area over the next few weeks.

On Friday, June 18, she'll be doing a CSC Talk Show with Carol Queen at the Center for Sex and Culture in San Francisco starting at 9pm. The doors will be open at 8pm, and price of entry is on a sliding scale from $7 to $25. They'll be talking about her career and the history of burlesque in San Francisco. The Center for Sex and Culture is located at 1519 Mission Street.

Right after the CSC Talk Show, Satan's Angel will be performing at the Hubba Hubba Revue: Hell! show. Please see the previous post for more information.

On Saturday, June 19, she'll be at her Aloha Party in Alameda at Forbidden Island Tiki Lounge, which is located at 1304 Lincoln Avenue. She won't be performing, but she'll have autographed photos available. The party starts at 5pm and will go until 7pm.

If you're a performer, you'll not want to miss her classes! She'll be teaching two classes on Monday, June 21: Bump-And-Glide (5-7pm) and Spinners and Tassels DIY (7-9pm). It'll be $25 for each class, or $40 for both. Classes will be held at the Medium Reality Studios at 916 Natoma Street in San Francisco. For reservations, please email Stephanie@LadyMonster.com.

At Cafe du Nord on Wednesday, June 23, you will have a chance to see a performance of "Have Tassels Will Travel," a one-woman improvisational play written for her featuring stories and slides from her life, plus costumes she's worn in various shows. Also performing will be Miss de Minna and Lady Monster. The show will start at 8:00pm, but there will be a VIP meet and greet at 7:00 and a burlesque party after the show at 10:30. Tickets range from $10 for just the burlesque party (if available), to $20 for the party and show (available online at TicketWeb), to $40 for the VIP package. (To purchase VIP TICKETS, CALL 415-861-5016 between 2:00 and 6:00pm.)

On Thursday, she's scheduled to be at Dark Horse Cabaret at Cafe du Nord, then on Friday, June 25, she'll be performing at Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio (3159 Mission Street in San Francisco) starting at 7:30pm. This special show will be $10, and it will feature performances by Lady Monster, Isis Starr, EmpeROAR Fabulous, and Miss Balla Fire. You'll want to get there early, as the show will likely sell out since it's a smaller venue.

She'll be participating in the Dyke March on June 26 at 7pm at Dolores Park, then will be featured on the EHS Pilates float with The Devil-Ettes in the SF Pride Parade on Sunday, June 27, starting at 10am in San Francisco's Civic Center.

Satan's Angel has an amazing presence and persona. If you haven't seen her perform live, you won't want to miss this chance before she leaves San Francisco and America! And if you love burlesque, you owe it to yourself to see her one last time before she leaves these shores. Every performance of hers that I've seen has been absolutely unforgettable, and she is truly a Living Legend of Burlesque!

All of the events are posted on her website at www.satansangel.com/TOUR.html.

Tease-O-Rama 2010 news: No Tease-O-Rama in 2010

Many of you have probably been wondering if there will be a Tease-O-Rama this year. The answer, sadly, is no. Yet there is hope that it will return in the future.

In a posting on the Tease-O-Rama Yahoo! Group, Tease-O-Rama producer Baby Doe stated that during the recent Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend in Las Vegas, "Many asked me about Tease-O-Rama this year, alas there will be no Tease-O-Rama in 2010 :( due to a million reasons but note we will be back!"

For those of you who aren't familiar with Tease-O-Rama, it's the de facto burlesque festival for San Francisco and pretty much all of California. In addition to several evenings of performances by many of the day's top performers from around the world, there were also various ancillary activities for burlesque performers and fans such as classes and movie screenings. It usually took place in October, and the last edition of the show in 2008 featured a roadshow that included stops in Seattle, Portland, and Ashland in addition to the weekend's main events in San Francisco.

Past performers at Tease-O-Rama have included Dita Von Teese, Catherine D'Lish, Satan's Angel, Michelle l'Amour, Kalani Kokonuts, and Dirty Martini.

The Dynamite Show with Fou Fou Ha! at the Brava Theater in SF this week

Catch San Francisco's favorite comedy/dance troupe Fou Fou Ha! in the world premiere of "The Dynamite Show," which starts a run this Thursday, June 17, at the Brava Theater in San Francisco.

Performing with Fou Fou Ha! will be the Gomorran Social Aid and Pleasure Club, one of the bands that has performed at First Friday Follies.

A description of the show, a list of show dates and times, and the ways in which you may purchase tickets in advance.

I also noticed that the show is listed on Goldstar.com. If you're a member there, tickets are available for between $10 and $12.50. I've never tried to buy tickets there, but if you're planning to go, you may want to look into becoming a member.

The Dynamite Show featuring Fou Fou Ha! (World Premiere)

“The Dynamite Show” is a “wildly unique” (NBC) song and dance review best described as "Fame" meets the Muppets. This up-beat musical spectacle will feature live neo-vaudevillian Dixie brass band tunes with “jaw-dropping dance numbers” and slapstick antics. It will follow the colorful characters of Fou Fou Ha! to Hollywood, as they are invited to audition for a reality-TV talent competition. They go through many dance numbers ranging from tangos to rock-opera tunes and finally arrive in Hollywood to audition in front of a panel of judges (cameos played by local celebrity performers TBA) only to realize that their “foolishness” may not have any room in the mainstream.

Written, directed and choreographed by Maya Culbertson-Lane, Fulbright Scholar and Artistic Director of Fou Fou Ha! and composed by Ryan Bebee, composer and director of Best of the Bay winning band The Gomorrans Social Aide and Pleasure Club, this original musical review features the talents of some of the bay area’s most versatile artists including Gerri Lawler of BATS, Nathan Cottam of the Peninsula Ballet, Jen Colasuanno of Lunatique Fantastique, Vegas Jenkins of Klown-fi rock band Gooferman with costume design by local designers including Dark Garden Unique Corsetry, Medium Reality and Trixie Designs.

Fou Fou Ha! www.foufouha.com is an comedy dance ensemble that combines satire and buffoonery with old-time animated cabaret numbers. Recently featured in The Guardian as one of the up-and-coming performance troupes in the bay area and named San Francisco’s “favorite new burlesque troupe” by the Examiner, Fou Fou Ha! has been described as having “wonderfully choreographed performance of comical buffoonery that left the crowd in laughter bordering tears” by Metrowise Magazine. They are coming out of a sold out run of Out of Order: A Musical that comes out of a toilet at Mama Calizo’s Voice Factory in Spring of 2009, receiving standing ovations and rave reviews like “If it’s Fou Fou HA! be ready for a fun show!” (SF Chronicle)

The Gomorrans Social Aide and Pleasure Club was voted favorite indie band in SF Weekly’s Best the Bay and have been described as “a gloriously lurid whisky - marinated Dixieland delirium” by the SF Bay Guardian. They are lead by Ryan Bebee who writes, directs, and produces for the group. His score composition for Dark Porches’ production of The In-Betweens was described as a "catchy" "eclectic" "haunting score" by the local press. A one-act play he wrote was produced twice by Sleepwalkers Theater Company and called "intelligent and playful" by the SF Bay Guardian and "borderline extraordinary" by the SF Weekly. Ryan also founded the Dead Hensons, the world's most celebrated Muppet cover band. Aside from his work with the Gomorrans, he's currently writing and producing songs for a new girl harmony fronted outfit called the Bitter Honeys.

Fishnet Follies guest hosts Dr. Sketchy's San Francisco on Tuesday, June 15

Mynx d'Meanor and Flame Cynders of Fishnet Follies will be guest hosting Dr. Sketchy's San Francisco this Tuesday, June 15, at 111 Minna Gallery in San Francisco.

What does this mean? It'll mean that you'll be able to draw, sketch, paint, or otherwise create art with Mynx and Flame as live models. How cool is that? They'll also probably perform a burlesque act for the audience!

All of this takes place in a casual and fun atmosphere. There's usually music playing, drawing contests, and more to make it a memorable experience for all attendees. Socialize with your fellow artists during the breaks, and grab a delicious beverage from the bar!

How much is it? It's only $10 general admission, and $7 for students and teachers with valid identification! It's a bargain for those who are looking to draw live models and have fun at the same time.

Please visit www.drsketchyssf.com to learn more about this and all future Dr. Sketchy's San Francisco events!

What is Dr Sketchy's Anti-Art School?

Dr Sketchy's is an international drawing phenomenon.

Dr. Sketchy's is the little Brooklyn event that became a movement. Founded in 2005 by artist Molly Crabapple, Dr. Sketchy's asked a simple question. Why can't drawing naked people be sexy?

In San Francisco, Dr Sketchy's gives you a monthly opportunity to draw rhinestone encrusted burlesque performers, bearded ladies, cute girls on bicycles and anything else we can conjure up to tantalize your pencils.

To find out when the next Dr Sketchy's is happening, join the mailing list and/or subscribe to the blog at http://www.drsketchyssf.com.

*** You seriously don't want to miss this party!! ***
--
Straight from the heart of San Francisco's BDSM community comes "Public Sex, Private Minds", a feature documentary film in production about the public personas and private identities of porn performers. Join the filmmakers and their subjects, Princess Donna and Lorelei Lee among others, at a fundraiser for the feature length film on "Public Sex, Private Minds." You'll be supporting a fantastic cause and get a chance to win unbelievable prizes that will, among other things, help improve your spanking technique.

In the 2009 short film 'Lorelei Lee' Simone Grudzen and Jesse Kerman took up The Documentary Challenge and ended up garnering awards with their portrait of Lorelei Lee, a star who ended the movie by heading to NYU's creative writing program. The short film succeeded because it opened up the question of what porn stars think of their work and what they do off the clock. It wasn't titillating, it was real life, and audiences responded to the question of how you'd live your life if you were a performer normally cast out from the public eye because Lorelei obviously relished her work and came across as a fully rounded person.

Since then director Simone Grudzen and producer and editor Jesse Kerman have been slowly gathering material for a feature film that focuses on how these very public and very sexual actresses balance their private lives. By bringing audiences behind the scenes, the film will reveal a wealth of lives and preconceptions that speak to questions far beyond sex. The actresses in the film, tentatively titled "Public Sex, Private Minds," reach right to the questions of who we are and how we build our lives.

Join Grudzen and the subjects of 'Public Sex, Private Minds' for a fundraiser Friday, June 11 at 9PM at The Paradise Lounge for an evening. The raucous evening features a screening of an exclusive, never before seen film trailer, a Kiss Que Shack Burlesque all star showcase, DJ's Ruby White and Twisted Scissor, as well as a silent auction for training sessions and other items and best of all the opportunity to chat with local stars like Princess Donna, Lorelei Lee, Maitresse Madeline, and Madison Young.

All funds raised from the event will go directly towards the production costs of "Public Sex, Private Minds," a feature length documentary film on the public personas and private identities of porn perfomers. The film aims to challenge common perceptions of porn performers and explore how they navigate their lives on and off camera. The film is planned for a 2011 release.

Kitten on the Keys hosts Little Minsky's on Thursday, June 10

Star of the film "Tournée" (On Tour), San Francisco's own Kitten on the Keys will host this month's Little Minsky's at Club Deluxe in San Francisco! The film won Best Director for Mathieu Amalric and the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) Prize for best film in the official line-up at this year's Cannes Film Festival in May.

Also performing tomorrow night will be Kiss Me Kate, who just last week performed at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend in Las Vegas. Joining her onstage will be a variety of seductive, talented, beautiful, and courageous performers including the Fishnet Follies' Mynx d'Meanor, sASSy's Seaside Burlesque's sASSy Hotbuns, Ophelia Coeur de Noir, and more!

Club Deluxe is a great place to see a burlesque show. Located in the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood of San Francisco, it has an art-deco facade and a very definite retro vibe. The show is on a stage in the lounge side of the bar, and there are a few seats and tables off to the "side" of the stage, so get there early if you want a good seat. Though many of the patrons will dress in their retro best, feel free to come as you are. Many do!

Ladies and gents, it's almost Little Minsky's time, so straighten those stockings, shine up those shoes, saunter on over to the Deluxe and indulge the senses in tasty tonics, seductive misses and melodic misters. We've got the shimmy and we've got the shake with a luscious line-up of burly-q beauties featuring the strictly scandalous Honey Lawless, the sly Mynx d'Meaner, sparkling Ruby White, enchanting Ariyana La Fey, curvaceous Kiss Me Kate, sizzling Sassy Hotbuns, vivacious Ophelia Coeur de Noir and introducing to the Minsky's stage Jinx the Minx formerly of Thru the Keyhole Burlesque in Boston. And chuckle along with the clever, satirical 20's-style comedic tunes of the anachronistic musical duo McPuzo and Trotsky. From Joan Cerqueiro we have an exotic blend of Spanish guitar and French 60's pop in original soulful serenades. Hostess for the night is none other than the effervescent Kitten on the Keys, fresh from a Vegas engagement at the luxurious Plaza Hotel.

Swing by the bar, pick your poison and enjoy the show...
