Comics burlesque in the Bay Area this Friday, April 2

Whether you'll be in San Francisco or Oakland this Friday, there will be burlesque shows on both sides of the Bay celebrating the comics/science fiction/fantasy cultures! In case you missed the news, WonderCon is happening this weekend, and so the shows will be drawing attendees from this huge convention happening at Moscone Center South in San Francisco.

In San Francisco at the DNA Lounge, Fishnet Follies is presenting, COMIC STRIP! in conjunction with The Ball of Justice, which is presented by Swing Goth.

I know Mynx d'Meanor and her Fishnet Follies presented previous versions of COMIC STRIP! in San Diego at the same times as Comic-Cons. But this year they've teamed up with Swing Goth for what is sure to be the must-see event of Friday night in the City.

Your favorite Bay Area burlesque performers, such as Bunny Pistol, Kiss Me Kate, Casey Castille, Lady Satan, Flame Cynders (Fishnet Follies co-producer) and Mynx herself, will be in costume as some of your favorite comics characters. The burlesque show will be at approximately 11pm.

Before and after, there will be live music from Grammy-nominated surf rockers Los Straitjackets and futuristic sci-fi band The Phenomenauts! Plus there will be music from DJs Melting Girl (Death Guild and 1984), Skip (New Wave City), Shatter (Bondage-a-Go-Go), and MzSamantha (Clockwork). Early in the evening, there will be dance lessons provided by Swing Goth!

Judging by the response to the Ball of Justice Facebook event page, this looks like it'll be a very popular show. It's unique, and it sounds very fun! Mynx and Flame have worked very hard on Fishnet Follies' second show in the Bay Area, and Brian Gardner of Swing Goth has done a terrific job putting together the bands, DJs, and handling everything else!

You can purchase advanced tickets at dnalounge.com for $16 if you want to be sure to get in. Tickets will be $20 at the door. And if you'll be at WonderCon on Friday, there will be $15 discount tickets at the Swing Goth booth.

Here are the details:

Surf-rockin' Luchadores, intrepid space explorers, superheros and dancing!

What more could you want from your Wondercon weekend? I know. How about a super hero themed burlesque show? Fishnet Follies Burlesque Revue presents COMIC STRIP! - a burlesque spectacular set between the bands!

Buy tickets now: http://www.dnalounge.com/calendar/2010/04.html#02

The night is headlined by Grammy nominated, CoCo regulars: Los Straightjackets! Donning the guise of masked Mexican wrestlers to protect their identity, these surf rockin' do-gooders lead the never-ending fight for your right to party!

On April 2nd they team up with heroic space explorers, The Phenomenauts, whose ship is powered by a rock'n'roll super-collider that smashes Rockabilly particles headlong into New Wave sound. Together they will vanquish your Friday night doldrums.

And sidekicks can get their kicks on the side with some of the best DJs in SF:

Melting Girl (Death Guild and 1984)
Skip (New Wave City)
Shatter (Bondage-a-Go-Go)
MzSamantha (Clockwork)

Fishnet Follies Burlesque Revue presents COMIC STRIP!
Starring:
Bunny Pistol!
Casey Castille!
Flame Cynders!
Kiss Me Kate!
Lady Satan!
Mynx d'Meanor!
... with special guest:
Dizzy Von Damn! (Miss Viva Las Vegas 2008)

And hosted by Hubba Hubba Revue's MC Kingfish!

Early in the evening, dance lessons are provided by Swing Goth! Now bi-coastal in SF and NYC, Swing Goth has been recognized by SF Bay Guardian as one of the "Best of the Bay." Forget the footwork, partner dancing is about connection to your partner and feeling the music and we've re-designed our instruction to focus on just that!

As an organization dedicated to partner dancing to modern music, we believe you don't need to listen to your grandparent's music to have fun dancing like they did. Read more about us and past events at http://www.swinggoth.com or puruse the links below for prior press coverage.

Don't want to partner dance? No problem, DNA Lounge has two levels of music and dancing, but don't miss this ball, or you'll regret it!

Upcoming Kitten on the Keys performances: March 2010

If you're a burlesque fan in the San Francisco Bay Area, odds are you've seen Kitten on the Keys in action. She's been an emcee at Tease-O-Rama and the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend, performed in her own one-woman show, been named SFBG's Best of the Bay singer-songwriter, and been featured in many, many burlesque and cabaret shows around the Bay.

In the next week, she'll be performing in several venues and shows. One of the cool things about that is you get to see her perform in front of different audiences and environments. Although some of the songs are the same, she tailors her performances to the varying situations. (Note that all of the following events are 21 and older, though, so you've got to be of drinking age.)

For example, this Thursday, she'll be performing on the piano during happy hour (6-9pm) at Madrone Art Bar in San Francisco. This is a free show, and you'll see and hear as she "...tickles the ivories and croons decadent songs of yesteryear. Unearthed Tin Pan Alley Treasures with a twist." A great time for not much dough! Plus there will be Salsa dancing lessons afterwards at 9, followed by DJ dancing. Madrone Art Bar is located at 500 Divisadero Street.

On Friday, she'll be playing the piano for David J. of Bauhaus and Love and Rockets fame at Trannyshack at the DNA Lounge. It'll be a David Bowie tribute night, so you'll get to see Kitten perform some Bowie songs with one of goth rock's legends. What a treat! Also performing will be Fauxnique, Vinsantos, Kiddie, Elijah Minnelli, Suppositori Spelling, Kim Burly, Mercy Fuque, Falsetta Knockers and an exclusive set by electro sensations Ejector! DNA Lounge is located at 375 11th Street in San Francisco. Doors open at 10pm, show is at midnight. Tickets are $12 and are available online in advance at dnalounge.com.

Then on Monday, Kitten will be Hubba Hubba Revue's show at the Uptown Club in Oakland. I'm guessing that if she plays a piano, it'll be her portable Hello Kitty one! There might also be ukulele and accordion-playing, too. Also on the bill that night are Sid Scenic, Casey Castille, Ariyana La Fey, Eeyore the Clown, and birthday girl Bunny von Tail! The Uptown is located at 1928 Telegraph Avenue. Doors open at 9pm, show is at 10:15ish. Tickets are $5.

On March 29, she'll also be performing in an Easter show with the Sid Scenic. There aren't any other details yet, but when they're available you will find them on Kitten's website, kittymusic.com.

So check out some of her shows. I guarantee you'll have a "meow-velous" time! ;-)

San Francisco area burlesque for March 24 to March 30, 2010

After all of the activity of the past few weeks, I didn't see this coming up! It's a relatively quiet week in San Francisco burlesque.

This Thursday, catch burlesque favorite Kitten on the Keys at the Madrone Art Bar in San Francisco for a free happy hour show. Then on Monday, she'll be also be appearing in the Hubba Hubba Revue's Monday show at the Uptown Club in Oakland. She'll also be playing piano for the legendary David J (Bauhaus and Love and Rockets) at Trannyshack at DNA Lounge on Friday night!

On Friday, there will be the weekly Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco. I haven't received the line-up yet, but they always have a good show. Also on Friday, within walking distance at Amnesia Bar, you can catch Ariyana La Fay, Lady X, and Pin Key Lee at Baxtalo Drom's Red Cabaret.

Have a good week, everyone! :-)

  • Thursday, March 25: Happy Hour with Kitten on the Keys at Madrone Art Bar in San Francisco, 500 Divisadero Street. Kitten on the Keys (Suzanne Ramsey) tickles the ivories and croons decadent songs of yesteryear. Unearthed Tin Pan Alley Treasures with a twist. 6-9pm. Salsa dancing lessons and DJ dancing starting at 9. No cover, 21+ w/ID.

  • Friday, March 26: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco, 3158 Mission Street. Dottie Lux brings you a different show every single week! Each event promises the seductive and spicy, absurd and amusing all from local and visiting talent. Show at 7:30pm. $5-10, sliding scale. 21+ w/ID.

  • Also Friday: Red Door Cabaret at Amnesia in San Francisco, 853 Valencia Street. Red Door Cabaret; an alluring evening of risque and rowdy dance performances, live music, side show stunts, Balkan Beats, and drag! Featuring Ariyana la Fey, Lady X, and Pin Key Lee, along with Mistress of Ceremonies Doktor Bordello and musical guest Scotch and Bones and DJ Wolfgang Von Cope! 9pm. $5 before 10pm, $10 after. 21+.

Bay Area premiere of Fishnet Follies, Monday, March 22, 2010

It started in San Diego several years ago when Mynx d'Meanor moved to San Diego and thought that it needed a show that would bring together all of the area's burlesque troupes plus special out-of-town guests. Thus was Fishnet Follies conceived. For several years, she produced shows such as Breastacular! Breastacular! and the very popular Comic Strip.

Now, she's returned to the Bay Area and brought the Follies with her! Along with her co-producer Flame Cynders, Mynx d'Meanor is proud to present the the first Fishnet Follies show at the Uptown Club in Oakland this coming Monday night, March 22. They've lined up some local burlesquers to perform, and some very special guest performers from across the Pacific!

From the Land of the Rising Sun, Violet Eva will be performing! A headliner with the Murasaki Babydoll burlesque troupe, as well as being their director and choreographer, she won the "Best Debut" award at 2007 Miss Exotic World.

Also performing will be jazz and cabaret singer Maki Rinka, fresh from her performances at SXSW. In a Japan Times Online article, she jokingly said that she likes "to play at a place where people can drink and eat food and talk, because my music goes well with alcohol (laughs)." So keep the Uptown's bar busy on Monday night! To listen to some of her songs, visit her MySpace page.

The show details are below. And look! It's only five bucks! And if you're wondering what happened to the Hubba Hubba Revue, don't sweat it! They've graciously allowed Fishnet Follies to have this one Monday night and will be back in fine form next week!

About our VISITING PERFORMER Pidgeon Von Tramp of the Von Foxies:

The Von Foxies are Seattle's hottest comedy burlesque power-trio and Miss Exotic World 2007 Best Burlesque Troupe winners! Pidgeon Von Tramp, Heidi Von Haught and Elsa Von Schmaltz have performed across the country from Boston to the Bay Area and have made a home for themselves in the burgeoning neo-burlesque community. Often told they have "cornered the market on the absurd," these kinky minxes enjoy playing with the boundaries of sexuality, gender and decency while engaging in their distinctive brand of bait 'n switch bump 'n grind. They adore burlesque in all its forms- traditional bombshell beauty, queer gender-f*ck draglesque, hilariously naughty satire and politically powerful theatre. If you are ever in the Pacific Northwest, they are a treat not to be missed.

San Francisco area burlesque for March 17 to March 23, 2010

This coming Monday will see the premiere of the Fishnet Follies in the Bay Area at the Uptown Club in Oakland. They've been given the slot by the Hubba Hubba Revue for that one night!

The Fishnet Follies were founded by Mynx d'Meanor in San Diego several years ago. She has since moved back to San Francisco, so she's brought the Follies to the City by the Bay. She's been joined by Flame Cynders as co-producer, and this pairing promises to result in many wonderful shows in the near future.

Hubba Hubba Revue: Awards Show! will be this Friday at the DNA Lounge in San Francisco. They've assembled a tremendous cast, and they'll spoof everything there is to spoof about all of those Hollywood awards shows. It should be something to see!

On Wednesday, Barbary Coast Burlesque will be having a special St. Patrick's Day show at Hotel Utah. There are five burlesquers scheduled, so there should be two acts per performer. They'll also have drink specials, including Irish Car Bombs for $5. Enjoy! :-)

Last week's birthday bonanza proved to the city of San Francisco once again that Red Hots Burlesque is the place to be on friday night when looking for mess, dress, class, ass and the finite complexities of what-the-fuck-just-happened.

As we continue the marathon month of pisces parties, we are honored to showcase the costume creations from Orange Appeal and Miss Honey Penny.

This week the cast is busting at the seams with talent all performing in Orange Appeal. We'll be working it on the runway (ahem carpeted catwalk). Bring your imagination b/c if you can dream it she can build it!

Little Minsky's Burlesque and Variety Show

Ladies and gents, the Little Minsky's crew is positively giddy to announce a slew of special guests from Seattle this Thursday at the old Club Deluxe. That's right, we've not one, not two but four fantastical feature attractions for your show time pleasure. Let's give a warm Minsky's welcome to Waxie Moon - the scintillating and scandalous boylesque sensation, Sydni Deveraux - the curvaceous golden glamazon, Fuschia Foxx - the gorgeous fusion bellydance burlesque goddess, and our host for the night Armitage Shanks - enigmatic co-founder and ringmaster of the illustrious Circus Contraption. And for our local lovelies we have the lithe and luscious Mynx d'Meanor, the sinfully seductive Lady Satan, the exotic temptress Gia Haad and the voluptuous vixen Kiss Me Kate. It's going to be one saucy and splendid night, so saunter on over and see you at the bar...

And if you're free Wednesday, you can see all our Seattle guests and more at Sin On Heels at Broadway Studios - a touring drag, burlesque, cabaret production directed by none other than Sydni Deveraux. For further info - http://www.the4horsemen.org/lecabaretnoir.

Le Cabaret Noir's "Sin on Heels" tour comes to SF on Wednesday, March 10, 2010

This Wednesday, you'll have an opportunity to see many of Seattle's finest burlesque performers as Le Cabaret Noir's Sin on Heels tour comes to Broadway Studios in San Francisco!

Miss Indigo Blue, Sydni Deveraux, Fuchsia FoXXX, Waxie Moon, Inga Ingenue, and Ernie Von Schmaltz, Jenny Penny are performing in the show. You may remember some of them from the documentary, A Wink and a Smile (2008).

Also included in the cast for this San Francisco show are local burlesque luminaries Alotta Boutté and Kellita of the Hot Pink Feathers!

It's a great opportunity to see some of Seattle's finest performers without having to travel to Seattle. Miss Indigo Blue is the headmistress of the Academy of Burlesque and has performed on stages across America and Europe and is one of the most recognizable names in burlesque today.

Sydni Deveraux is known as the Golden Glamazon for good reason! In person, she's amazingly tall, golden, and glamorous. Plus she's very talented, as she's the director of this show as well as a performer.

Fuchsia FoXXX has been voted Seattle's sexiest bellydancer and burlesque dancer in 2007 and 2008, respectively. She's also known as the "Hot Pink Exotic Machine." If you've seen her perform live, you'll know why!

When it comes to boylesque, Waxie Moon is unique. A classically trained actor and dancer, Waxie came to the world of neo-burlesque and put his own stamp on it with his performances. He's also the star of his own documentary, Waxie Moon (2009). He doesn't make it down to San Francisco that often, so catch him while you can!

When you think of "Little Blonde Bomb," who do you think of? Why, it should be Inga Ingenue! She's performed as a Reigning Queen of Burlesque (formerly Miss Exotic World) competitor at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend in Las Vegas, at the Amsterdam Burlesque Festival, and the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival, among many others. She's also been an instructor at Miss Indigo Blue's Academy of Burlesque.

Is it Elsa or Ernie Von Schmaltz? You can tell it's Ernie by the gold chains, bushy mustache, and pot belly hanging over his polyester leisure suit pants! His performances as a "ladies man" are hilarious. But I've always wondered what Elsa thinks of him...

Jenny Penny rounds out the cast, and Armitage Shanks will be your host for the evening.

It looks like a great show, and $20 is a lot less than plane fare to Seattle! $25 VIP seating and a $45 dinner package are available, and may be purchased in advance at Brown Paper Tickets.

Sin on Heels will be at the Broadway Studios in San Francisco for one night only. Broadway Studios is at 435 Broadway, between Kearney and Montgomery. Seating will begin at 7pm for those with dinner tickets, 7:30 for those with VIP tickets, and 8:00 for the general audience. The show is scheduled to begin at 9:00, and is approximately 90 minutes long.

For more show information, please visit http://www.lecabaretnoir.com.
