La Chica Boom (www.lachicaboom.com) has announced that Kaleidoscope, The Third Annual National People of Color Cabaret, will be on Saturday, September 26, at 8pm at the Brava Theater in San Francisco.

From the description, it looks like a fantastic show! I remember seeing Toni Elling at the Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend this year in Vegas. There will be other notable performers of color from around the country and from right here in the Bay Area.

Tickets are now available at a discounted $20 at www.brownpapertickets.com/event/78443, and will be $25 at the door.

Here is the press release that she sent out. It contains the full line-up of performers, the event website address, and other relevant information!

Jeff Spirer photobooth at Feed: The Fundraiser II on Thursday, August 27, 2009

Jeff Spirer (http://www.spirer.com/) will be operating a photobooth at Thursday's Feed fundraiser (see previous post for details). I've known Jeff for about a little over a year now, as he's a regular photographer at Red Hots Burlesque, Barbary Coast Burlesque, and other shows. He also works at boxing and martial arts matches and classes, concerts, and other events. But no weddings! Heh. Check out his website for more examples of his work.

At the fundraiser, there will be a room set aside in the Climate Theater for Jeff. He'll have his camera, lights, a computer and a printer. For $5, you can get a stylized 4x6 photo of yourself and perhaps a friend or two as a memento!

Jeff sent me some photos he's stylized from the first Feed fundraiser. I've uploaded them to Photobucket to place in this post and am hoping the slideshow works. Which, of course, it doesn't. Ha ha. So here are the photos presented in the old-fashioned way!

I'm terrible at putting names to faces. For example, I'm not sure if one of photos is of Bitter Waitress or Bunny Bardot. If you recognize some of the performers, please let me know. Also let me know if I made a mistake in labeling the photos! A comment below will suffice if you don't want to send an email. :-)

Happy viewing!

Jill Tracy hosts Little Minsky's on Thursday, August 13, 2009

It's a big show on Thursday when chanteuse Jill Tracy hosts Little Minsky's at Club Deluxe! Not only will Jill probably treat the audience to a song or two, but there will be an all-star line-up of burlesque performers including Vienna La Rouge, Flame Cynders, Dottie Lux, Miss de Minna, Pin Key Lee, Kiss Me Kate, baton twirler Baton Rouge, and more!

Check out the entire show description below. It even includes a plug for Jill Tracy's show at Cafe du Nord on Sunday (Cafe du Nord page)!

Ladies and gents, Little Minsky's is just around the corner with a sultry summer showcase guaranteed to keep the mercury riding high. For the first time on the Minsky's stage, we're pleased to welcome the sizzling Vienna La Rouge known for her spectacular costume creations as well as her elegant allure. And visiting us from New York, Baton Rouge flaunts her twirling talents and for once we're not talking about tassels here. Your mistress of ceremonies, the shady chanteuse Jill Tracy leads this night of delightful diversions featuring the smoldering Flame Cynders, luscious Miss de Minna, red hot Dottie Lux, Pin Key Lee, Ariyana La Fey, Honey Lawless and Kiss Me Kate. But wait, there's more. Swing to the slick jazz sounds of the Deluxe All-Stars, a combo of stellar musicians from the Deluxe scene assembled for your enjoyment by hep cat trombonist Danny Grewen.

Yes, it's a big show. We recommend at least four martinis (or preferred cocktail alternative)...

In other news, coming up on Sunday, enjoy a full dose of Jill Tracy's original musical concoctions at that cozy speakeasy Cafe Du Nord along with sets by LOOP!STATION and Nicki Jaine. Details listed below. (No, it's not a Minsky's show. Just highly recommended.)

Cheers...

Kentucky Fried Woman Show for Friday, August 7, 2009

If you're in the East Bay this Friday, you've got a choice of a couple of shows. One is First Friday Follies (see previous post) at the Stork Club, and the other is The Kentucky Fried Woman Show at Velvet. Next month the KFWS moves to Saturdays, so you won't have such a hard decision to make. :-)

And while we're on the subject of Cupcake, she's started her own business. Guess what she's making. Yes, cupcakes! Hehe. Well, she'll also make other baked goodies for ya.

Her business is called Sweet Petite Baking and Confections, which is located on the internet at www.sweetpetitebaking.com. The phone number is 510-508-9926. If you're need of some baked goodies for a party or other event, why not call the woman whose name says it all? :-)

Lucha VaVOOM in San Francisco this Friday, August 7, 2009

Rita D'Albert, co-producer of Lucha VaVoom (aka Ursulina), let me know that the show will feature a line-up of burlesque performers specially selected for our city! SF's very own Roky Roulette will be featured along with Miss Exotic World 2008 first runner up Lux La Croix! Here's how Rita described the burlesque performers:

1. Lux LaCroix - always makes a great showing at Miss Exotic World. She is doing a high-energy number that got a standing ovation in Los Angeles when she did it earlier this year.

2. Moana Santana - a LVV favorite, this is her SF debut. She has a real go-go feel and an amazing shape. She really shakes!

3. Karis - Hula Hoop hottie Karis is a big SF favorite - has to be seen to be believed.

4. Cherchez La Femme - she is over 6 feet of belly-dance magic, we are really lucky to have her for this show. She is incredible!

5. Roky Roulette - SF resident and Pogo-stick superstar. He always brings it - the crowds love him.

6. Ursulina - that's me. I haven't decided whether to do a number, but I just might.

Add to this all of the wrestling mayhem that will happen in the same venue, and the hilarious commentary provided by the comedians, and you've got a fantastic night at The Fillmore. Ice Cream Man says, "Well, it is the brilliant combination of Masked Mexican Wrestling and Burlesque dancing, otherwise known as the great blend of sex and violence. With fat sweaty men in spandex and half-naked girls in pasties, what more could one want?" NPR says, "Lucha VaVoom bills what it offers as sexo y violencia — a tried-and-true hybrid for hard times."

Bombshell Betty August burlesque classes

A couple of Bombshell Betty's famous burlesque classes start soon, so if you've always wanted to learn to shimmy and shake, now's the time! Betty's been teaching burlesque in San Francisco for years now, and she's taught many of the performers that you see on stages across the Bay Area.

Here's a message that Betty sent out. You can find more information about her and her classes by visiting her website via the links below. She always has new classes of some kind starting, so check her website frequently for the lastest news!

Hello burlesque fans,

We have two Burlesquercise series starting in just a few days, so don't wait to sign up!

Not sure which series is right for you? If you want to learn everything you need to know to create and perform SOLO ACTS, then the Intensive I series is the one for you! If you want to learn GROUP ACTS and techniques that compliment the choreography, then the Dance Workout series is what you want to take. Routines from both of these series will be performed at upcoming shows around the SF Bay Area, and all participants are eligible to perform.

Come join the fun!
Betty

http://www.bombshellbetty.net

___BURLESQUERCISE DANCE WORKOUT SERIES:

*** Starts August 5! ***
Pull your lingerie out of the back of the drawer and get ready for a unique and sexy workout, because "Burlesquercise!" proves that exercising can be sexy and FUN! Combining toning exercises with lively burlesque dancing and fun choreography, this class will have you shimmying and shaking your way through fun dance routines and unique workouts that will have you giggling so much you won't even notice you're working out - until you see the results! So throw on your stockings, grab a boa and let's shake it!

___BURLESQUERCISE INTENSIVE I: Break into the Bump and Grind!

*** Starts August 11! ***
This will be the last full series of 2009! In this 12-week intensive, you will learn everything you need to know to get started in burlesque! By the time you finish this course, you will have a strong foundation in burlesque movement, a solid stage persona, and the ability to fully engage your audience while telling your story through burlesque striptease. You'll know how to incorporate props into your act,
including using your clothing as props and twirling nipple tassels. You'll have created signature moves and learned how to invent your own dance moves for the stage. PLUS MUCH MORE! Want to stand out from the crowd? Go from "wanna-be" to "gotta-see" in only 12 weeks!

San Francisco area burlesque for the week of August 3, 2009

Ever since I heard about it, I've been interested in Lucha VaVoom (www.luchavavoom.com). If you're not familiar with this show, it's based in Los Angeles but also travels to different cities. It's a mixture of lucha libre wrestling and burlesque. And it's attracted up to 1500 people per show in L.A.

This week, the show rolls into The Fillmore on Friday. Unfortunately, most of the shows this week seem to be bunched up on Friday, so a decision will need to be made. Lucha VaVoom in San Francisco? Or First Friday Follies or The Kentucky Fried Woman show in Oakland? And don't forget Red Hots Burlesque and Mama Calizo's Crash Cabaret earlier in the evening.

To aid your decision, here are some of the shows' details. Please check back later in the week for shows that I find out about as information becomes available!

  • Monday, August 3: Uptown Hubba Hubba at the Uptown in Oakland, 1928 Telegraph Avenue. Help Kingish and Eddie welcome the first week of August! They'll be joined by Mariel A La Mode, Ginger Virago, Delilah, Trouble, Kiss Me Kate, sASSy Hotbuns, Pepper LaRue, and the musical stylings of McPuzo & Trotsky! Doors at 9pm, show at 10:15ish. $5, 21+ w/ID.

  • Friday, August 7: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in SF, 3158 Mission Street. Dottie Lux brings you a different show every single week! Each event promises the seductive and spicy, absurd and amusing all from local and visiting talent. Show at 7:30pm. $5-10 sliding scale, 21+ w/ID.

  • Also Friday: Under the Influence featuring SF Boylesque and Fou Fou Ha! at Yerba Buena Gardens in SF, 701 Mission Street. See two of the Bay Area's most inventive troupes as they perform at YBCAlive!'s Mama Calizo's Crash Cabaret in the Big Ideas Room at the Yerba Buena Center for the Performing Arts. Show at 9pm. $10, free for YBCA members.

  • Also Friday: Lucha VaVoom at The Fillmore in SF, 1805 Geary Boulevard. Masked Lucha wrestlers plus burlesque performers equals sexo y violencia! Show at 9pm. $32.50, all ages.

  • Also Friday: First Friday Follies at the Stork Club in Oakland, 2330 Telegraph Avenue. Join Margaret France as she hosts a show full of giggles and jiggles. See Ophelia Coeur de Noir, Chi Chis Del Fuego, Kiss Me Kate, Pin Key Lee, Cupcake, and Little Eyeful. Thrill to the return of Amateur Hour! Be amazed by Baton Rouge's Bodacious Gillian! Groove to the sounds of Mugg Muggles and Zombie Defense League. Show at 9:30ish. Free, but donations encouraged. 21+ w/ID.

  • Also Friday: The Kentucky Fried Woman Show at Velvet in Oakland, 3411 MacArthur Blvd. An evening of performance dedicated to all things Annie....the musical....etc!! Featuring Simone de la Getto, La Chica Boom, Charleston Chu, Momma’s Boyz, Virginia Suicide, Drew Montana & Lance Armstar, and the Diamond Daggers! Doors at 8:30pm, show at 9:30. $10, 21 and older.

As always, for more information, please check the calendar above. Also, you may want to check back during the week to see if there are and late additions to this schedule. And if you have a burlesque show or information about a show you would like to add to the calendar, please email me at sfbr AT gmx DOT com.

Uptown Hubba Hubba for Monday, August 3, 2009

The fog and low clouds creep down the streets of San Francisco, and I'm sure Kingfish and Eddie will be creeping home after a few hard nights of making sure the local bars stay in business during these tough times. Hehe. But don't worry! They'll be (somewhat) sober by the start of Monday evening just in time for Uptown Hubba Hubba in Oakland!

My buddy Kiss Me Kate (www.myspace.com/kissmekateburlesque) is in the line-up! She told me that she's all rested after taking a few months off she's and gonna stage a Burly-Blitz of Bay Area stages this month. So let's all welcome her back with a rousing round of whoops and hollers! :-)

This is a photo I took of Kiss Me Kate at Uptown Hubba Hubba last year. At first, it looked like one of those mistakes. Blurry. Kind of dark. But on third look, it seemed kind of artistic. So let's say I made it intentionally blurry to capture her energy and motion! Ha ha. And I'm sticking with that story. ;-)

Howdy Friends!

The next Hubba Hubba at the UPTOWN CLUB has a line-up that's gonna start Summer's last big month with BANG!

Hop in your dune-buggies and come on down, 'cuz Mondays in Oakland are made for BURLESQUE!

For MONDAY, August 3rd, we've got:

MARIEL A LA MODE!
Ginger Virago!
Delilah!
Trouble!
Kiss Me Kate!
sASSy Hotbuns!
Pepper LaRue!
McPuzo & Trotsky!
Savage Man-Beast, Zip the What-Is-It?!

...and everyone's favorite drunks/MC's, Kingfish & Eddie!

still just FIVE BUCKS!
