Burlesque and Pinup artwork by Alice Stribling and Jessica Whiteside on display, Friday, May 29, 2009

The burlesque and pinup inspired artwork of Alice Stribling and Jessica Whiteside (hosts of Dr. Sketchy's SF and curators of Pin It Up, Babycakes!) will be exhibited at the Dollhouse Bettie Lingerie shop Friday evening, from 5:00 til 9:00pm. In addition, there will be a live model in the window for you to draw. Sort of a mini Dr. Sketchy's!

It's all a part of the Haight Street Art Walk. It's perfect if you have some time before or after seeing a screening of "A Wink and a Smile" (previous post) and the Minsky's Winks after party (previous post) at Club Deluxe. Both the club and the theater are just a few blocks away!

Here's the message I received from Alice with details including the address of the Dollhouse Bettie Lingerie shop:

Hi everyone,

I would like to invite you to join us this Friday May 29th from 5-9pm for the Haight Street Art Walk!

Artists, please bring your pencils and sketchbooks. We invite you to draw the live model in the window.

- Alice Stribling

As part of the new monthly Haight Street Art Walk, Dollhouse Bettie Lingerie will be having an art exhibition curated by Alice Stribling and featuring burlesque & pinup inspired artwork by Alice Stribling and Jessica Whiteside.

There will be a live model in the window and artmaking by local talents.

There will also be more fun entertainment at Dollhouse Bettie Lingerie, and over 20 stores on Haight Street will be participating.

Benefit for Ms. Cherry Gallete on Sunday, May 31, 2009

If you've ever met Cherry Gallete, you'll always remember what a fun, positive, friendly and lovely person she is. Now she needs our help. It seems she had a run-in with an SUV. Well, those vehicles are a lot larger than Cherry, so you can guess who would up with the most damage! She's on the mend, but she could use our love and dollars to help her along until she's able to get back to her day job and dancing! To help her out, her friends and family have put together a show this Sunday at Velvet in Oakland. And if you can't attend, you can send a donation via PayPal. Here are the deets:

Our Cherie Amour: A Benefit for Ms. Cherry Galette

WHEN: SUNDAY MAY 31, 7 PM til the ride is over.
WHERE: Velvet Oakland, 3411 MacArthur Blvd.
WHAT: An evening of performance, delicious drinks, and love and money giving to the infamous and magically delicious Ms. Cherry, our beloved Arab/Latin showgirl, Mangos With Chili co-founder and co-director, and queer of color community magic maker
WHY: Because Cherry was hit by a truck two months ago and needs some community love and dollar bills. And c'mon- you want an excuse to go drink on a Sunday at Velvet anyways!!!!!!!!!!!
COVER: $10 to whatever you wanna give.

FEATURING:
DJ Emancipacion
Mangos with Chili
Kellita of Hot Pink Feathers
Simone de La Getto
Chan Fantastique
King TuffNStuff
Kiss Me Kate
Margaret France
Barbarita Perales
And TBA

Dear community and family,

You know Cherry. You love Cherry. Maybe you know her as that magically delicious queer Chicana/Arab dancer whose gorgeous Arab-Latin dance fusion, burlesque, sassy gogo, or work with Hot Pink Feathers and other Bay Area dance groups has left you jaw dropped and speechless as she embodied all the fierce, life-giving, smile inducing, queer beauty and power you ever dreamed of or needed deep in your soul. Maybe you know her as the co-founder and director of Mangos With Chili, or a producer of countless stunning shows both near and across the country that centered queer of color art and stories that lifted and saved you. Maybe you know her as a friend, a loved one, part of your dance community, part of your SWANA/Arab/North African/Middle Eastern, Latina/o, queer of color family, or as the open hearted, sweet, rowdy and raucous girl whose words and movement and courageous truth telling have been there for you when you needed it.

Two months ago, as she was walking across the street, Cherry was hit by an SUV whose driver was making a left turn while talking on her cell phone. The injuries from this accident have left Cherry in pretty constant pain since then, with limitations to her mobility and energy. They have prevented her from working at her day job or dancing - her art, and also how she makes part of her living. While Cherry is doing all the physical therapy, chiropractic treatment, herbal remedies, stretching and resting known to humanity, healing is going to take its own time.

In the two months since the accident, we, Cherry's friends and family, have been helping her with the day to day stuff. However, at this point, she needs help to sustain herself financially and cover living expenses and costs for treatment.

We are a family. And family take care of each other. Especially queer and trans of color family who may not have close relationships with our families of origin. We are kin, and we have a responsibility to care for each other when we are challenged by hardship.

So we are calling on you, our larger community, to please come out to a fabulous benefit night of entertainment for Ms. Cherry! And if you can't make it, please consider donating money to Cherry through PayPal (use the email chachacherry AT gmail DOT com). All donations will go towards paying for Cherry's rent, groceries and other living expenses while she is still unable to work.

In love and revolution,
The Cheryluscious Love Team

The PayPal link that I received in the email didn't work, but I think you can donate using her email above. If I receive more information, I'll be sure to post it.

Burlesque Hall of Fame Weekend 2009

If you've been following my Twitter feed over there in the sidebar, you'll know that I'm on a team for the 1st Annual Barecats Invitational Bowling Tournament. Yay! So it follows that I'll be attending the Burelsque Hall of Fame Weekend in Las Vegas, June 5-7 (www.burlesquehall.com). I'm pretty stoked to be on the same team as Dizzy Swank (www.myspace.com/dizzyswank), Magic Max (magicconversations.blogspot.com), and Vivenne VaVoom (www.viviennevavoom.com). Since none of the local performers competing in the 19th Annual Miss Exotic World Pageant, I'll be cheering loudly for my teammate, Vivienne. Woot!

Here is the lineup of contestants and performers for Miss Exotic World 2009, hosted by by El Vez and Miss Astrid:

Arabella Trapeze (Brooklyn, NY)
The Chicago Starlets (Chicago, IL)
Dinah Might (Vancouver, BC)
The Evil Hate Monkey (Baltimore, MD)
Foxy Tann & the WBTYM's (Twin Cities, MN)
Gigi and Pop (Brooklyn, NY)
Hot Toddy (Chicago, IL)
Miss Indigo Blue (Seattle, WA)
Kalani KoKonuts (Las Vegas, NV)
Knicker Kittens Burlesque Revue (Stockholm, Sweden)
Kristina Nekyia (San Francisco, CA)
Little Brooklyn (Brooklyn, NY)
Lux LaCroix (Los Angeles, CA)
Madame Rosebud (New York, NY)
Melody Mangler (Vancouver, BC)
NANDA (Portland, OR)
The Oona Tramps (Chicago, IL)
Ophelia Flame (Minneapolis, MN)
Paco Fish (Baltimore, MD)
The Peach Tartes (NYC, NY)
Peekaboo Pointe (Brooklyn, NY)
Perle Noire (New Orleans, LA)
Renea LeRoux (Atlanta, GA)
Rita Star (Vancouver, BC)
Roxi D'Lite (Windsor, ON)
The Schlep Sisters (NYC, NY)
The Shanghai Pearl (Seattle, WA)
Sugar Kane (Helsinki, Finland)
Tatah DuJour (Key West, FL)
Trixee Sparkle (London, UK)
Trixie Little (Baltimore, MD)
Vicky Sin (Chicago, IL)
Vivienne VaVoom (Denver, CO)
...and a special, farewell performance by
the Reigning Queen of Burlesque, ANGIE PONTANI

You'll notice that Miss Indigo Blue and The Shanghai Pearl, who will be here this weekend for the premiere of "A Wink and a Smile" and various associated events, are both up for Miss Exotic World. So see some of their last performances before they head to Las Vegas!

There will be some Bay Area burlesquers performing in Vegas, though. Thursday's Opening Night Bash will see Bunny Pistol and Mariel a la Mode doing their thing. Friday's 52nd Annual Striptease Reunion Showcase features legends Holiday O'Hara and Viva LaFever (with The Devil-Ettes). San Francisco native Satan's Angel will also be there! Yay!

I'll probably also do the Pinup Safari with Don Spiro (www.donspiro.com)and Dale Rio (www.dalerio.com). Basically, there will be a bunch of photographers and models and performers loaded on a double decker bus and going to several venues to take pictures for about three hours. This year, the sites so far include the Aruba Hotel (www.arubalasvegas.com) and the "Welcome to Las Vegas" sign. Though I'm not a pro, I'm thinking it will be fun to go along for the ride and try to take some shots. I've never stood by the sign or been to the Aruba. Should be fun!

Interested in going? There's still $98 (plus taxes and fees) roundtrip (SFO to LAS) tickets available online from United Airlines and US Airways as of this posting. Prices sometimes change within minutes or hours, so check with your favorite travel websites for the latest fares.

It being Las Vegas, there's usually some decently priced lodging somewhere. Hotels.com has a deal at the Orleans, which is the site of the BHOF Weekend. You get the third night free. So if you arrive on Thursday night, Saturday night is free. That could be worth up to $110. Once again, prices and offers may change, so check to see what rates are available.

Tickets for the BHOF Weekend are available from the Orleans Casino site (www.orleanscasino.com/whats-new/events/burlesque-hall-of-fame-weekend). You can purchase a weekend pass for three nights, or you may purchase show tickets individually. For more information, see the BHOF site at www.burlesquehall.com.

If you do go, let me know. Perhaps we can plunder a buffet together! Arr, matey! Ha ha! :-)

Miss Indigo Blue began her sexy striptease career as a dancer at Champ Arcade and The Lusty Lady in Seattle, and the Lusty Lady and Century in San Francisco in the 90's. As a stripper and a strip-teaser, she developed skills for drawing attention, building desire, and accentuating the moments that happen BEFORE nudity and/or physical contact with customers. Tease is energizing and fun for providers and reduces burnout, while increasing customer loyalty by infusing a sense of attraction and play into the relationship. This workshop was first presented for the Sex Workers' Outreach Project in Tucson, AZ, as an invited class by Stacey Swimme. The material is applicable to all strippers, hookers, escorts, masseuses, and other face:face providers. Miss Indigo is delighted to re-offer this
material on a sliding scale to the San Francisco Bay Area Sex-Industry workers community.

San Francisco Burlesque Review: Anniversary Posting!

Wow! Time flies when you're having fun! It's been a year since the first post introducing the world to the San Francisco Burlesque Review.

During May of last year, there were 26 unique visitors to the SFBR. Last June, there were 409. In April of 2009, that number increased to 981.

In Live Search, the SFBR is the third result listed when searching for "San Francisco Burlesque." In Yahoo Search, this blog is the second main result returned.

So more people are finding the blog and calendar here. And I've heard from people at shows—burlesque fans, performers, and even producers—who use the SFBR to find out what shows are happening when and where. So I'm happy that people are finding it useful. That was the reason why I started it. In a way, it's a public service.

So thank you for reading! I have some upgrades planned. But if you have anything you'd like to see, please send me an email at sfbr AT gmx DOT com. Or feel free to post a comment below.

Oh! And if you know of some friends, family, or coworkers who you think would like to know about upcoming burlesque shows, classes, and other such events, please feel free to send them a link to sfburlesque.blogspot.com.

I'll probably post some anniversary stuff as the month goes on, but for now, here's another upcoming event!

Thanks again! :-)

She has performed most recently on the stages of: Deep Lez (National Queer Arts Festival), Rebel Grrl (SF in Exile), WRRK (Homo a GoGo benefit), APATURE festival, Cabaret de Nude, and the Kraftabilly Fair. Baby Doe of the Devil-Ettes at Kick-Ass Events on Thursday, May 14, 2009

I've been a part of organizing events before, and I know how difficult they can be. All the planning required. All the fires that spring up that need to be doused. Trying to expect the unexpected, and still knowing that one will experience something that hasn't ever happened to one before. So if I weren't going to the Lily Burana signing and Sugar Shack event at the Hypnodrome the Thursday, I'd check out Baby Doe of the Devil-Ettes at Kick-Ass Events.

I witnessed her in action at last year's Tease-O-Rama, and I'm convinced that she could pretty much handle organizing almost any kind of event. With all the drama going on, she manages to outwardly project cool under fire. And many of the people I talk to in the SF burlesque scene say that she helped them put together their events and shows.

So if you want to pick the brains of some really great event organizers who have a lot of experience, check out this Thursday's Kick-Ass Events!

The Devil-Ettes and Tease-O-Rama’s Baby Doe will be part of a panel at ‘Kick-Ass Events’

WHEN: Thursday May 14th at 6:30pm

MORE INFO: http://kickassevents.eventbrite.com/

LOCATION: 1254 Mission Street (@ 8th), San Francisco

A weekly series of free workshops and social gatherings targeted to the grassroots arts community – organizations and individuals alike – with the goal of strengthening community, building capacity, and letting off some steam!

An esteemed panel presentation featuring Robert Maldonado (Green Zone Productions), Baby Doe (Tease-O-Rama), and Cameron Eng (Dark Room Productions)

Events are exciting, fun, create buzz and build community for your project or organization, but they also require a lot of planning and know-how! We bring in the experts (with experience covering theater, green events, parades and burlesque shows!) to talk about what goes into planning and executing a successful event. San Francisco area burlesque for the week of May 11, 2009

It's a new week dawning here in San Francisco. It's a new day. It's a new life. For me. And I'm feeeeeeling good! Ha ha. Uptown Hubba Hubba for Monday, May 11, 2009

Is there Room for Cream with Kingfish and Eddie around while they're navigating Dangerous Curves (and Dangerous Dan) on the Sid Scenic route? Will they be blinded by the Juicy D. Light from the candles of the birthday cake? Does any of that make any sense? No? At least I got in some of the acts appearing at Uptown Hubba Hubba Monday in Oakland!

Yes sirree! By far the best way to spend your Monday night in Oakland is at the Uptown Nightclub. Not only will the aforementioned acts be performing, but they'll be part of a big, big show. And how can you beat the price of $5? A cornucopia of live performances for less than the price of a matinee at the cinemas. Wowzas!

Howdy Friends!

The best Monday night in show business just got even better! Hubba Hubba Revue returns to the UPTOWN CLUB with one of the biggest, most incredible shows you'll ever get to see at recession-era prices! Heck, it'd cost you more money to stay home!

MONDAY, May 11th, we've got:

JUICY D. LIGHT! (with Rubenesque Burlesque! --and it's her birthday, too!)
Sid Scenic!
Vixen Noir !

Some sexy San Francisco websites

Other than burlesque shows, there are tons of events happening in San Francisco and the Bay Area. Many of these events are sexy! Ooh! But how does one find these events? Wouldn't it be great if there were calendars just for sexy events?

Well, of course there are! One of these is the blog San Francisco is Sexy (www.sanfranciscoissexy.com/). Kathryn has posted some comments here, and she posts regularly about burlesque shows, sexy bands, sexy art, links to other sexy sites, and basically anything sexy happening in San Francisco.

There's also the newcomer sf.carnalnation.com. This is one of their first city-specific sites that includes a handy dandy calendar listing burlesque shows and classes, swingers parties, tantra classes, lectures, and pretty much everthing sex-positive that you can think of that's happening publicly. Plus, you get access to all the articles written by the staff and contributors at CarnalNation. Kingfish of Hubba Hubba Revue has an article there, "Why Burlesque? Why Now?"

So if you're searching for something to do, bookmark these sites and you'll have a plethora of sexy activities to choose from on any given day. If you have any San Francisco-related sexy sites, blogs or calendars that you know about, please feel free to post them in the comments section below.

Enjoy your weekend!

Spookshow A-Go-Go for Sunday, May 10, 2009

Oh my! Those naughty kids at Lux Killmore Entertainment are using profanity! Oh my word. Tsk, tsk.

Well, they're having a show coming up this Sunday at The Stud in San Francisco. It's titled Spookshow A-Go-Go: Mommy Dearest and Mother F***ers. Oh, even using those asterisks is making me apoplectic. Please give me a few moments to recover. Talk amongst yourselves....

Alright. It looks like a totally rockin' show. And mothers are free that day, too! Taking a closer look, it looks like everyone can get in free before 8pm. Wow! How can you beat a free show after having dinner with mum? If the producers would only watch their language. Haha. Here are the deets:

Spookshow A-Go-Go, May 10, 2009

All Mom's get in for free at this raucous and rowdy event. Once you've ordered your flowers and sent your greeting cards, come out and celebrate with your friends! Lux Killmore gets loud and lusty in a show you wont soon forget.

About The Film: Mommy Dearest Mommie Dearest has become a cult classic despite overwhelmingly negative reviews by film critics. Roger Ebert opened his review with "I can't imagine who would want to subject themselves to this movie." About Dunaway's performance, Variety said "Dunaway does not chew scenery. Dunaway starts neatly at each corner of the set in every scene and swallows it whole, costars and all.

" Roughly a month into release, Paramount realized the film was getting a reputation and box office as an unintentional comedy, and changed its advertising to reflect its new camp status, proclaiming, "Meet the biggest MOTHER of them all!"

About the Performers:
Mariel A La Mode- "The Bay Area's Sassy Sweet Queen of Burlesque!" ~El Vez She's a 4th generation circus artists and actually grew up in the Circus, how many of us can say that? She is an aerialist and burlesque babe with a killer set of...pipes!

Lady Satan- Producer and founding member of Sugar Shack NYC and SF's only burlesque dance party. Her unique style and humorous takes on classic themes have won over fans of stage and silver screen. Recently Lady Satan's performance as The Govoner of Alaska, Sarah Palin has landed her on Perezhilton.com and with over 14,000 views on Youtube. She's The Devil's ex-wife and she's not afraid to break your heart too!

Dottie Lux- There are two components that make up delectable Dottie: sexy, classy, delish delight and absurd humor. With acts ranging from distinguished beauty to deranged clown, this Red Hot is always the perfect flavor. Dottie has brought chuckles, bumps and grinds to NYC, SF, Seattle, LA, Boston and even the seedy shores of Coney Island.

Lady Monster- Stripping at the speed of seduction, Lady Monster will rip apart your conceptions of how sexy a big girl can be. This veteran spoken word siren has a shimmy in her step, peeling off her velvet gloves to reveal an iron fist. Vivacious, campy and oh so curvy - a growling good time. Her repertoire includes: Margaret Cho’s The Sensuous Woman (Los Angeles and San Francisco), Burlesque at the Beach (Coney Island, NYC), Full Body Symposium (Massachusetts), Tease-O-Rama 2005, 2007 and 2008 (San Francisco), and a variety of events in San Francisco). The Living Legend of Burlesque Satan’s Angel has declared her, “The Queen of the Fire Tassels”. She is her protégé with this skill and has added it to her burlesque routines. Recently Satan’s Angel and Lady Monster performed a fire tassel twirling duet in San Francisco where Angel declared her participation as “Perfection!”.

Our Host: Simone De La Ghetto- Founding member of the Award Winning Troupe, Harlem Shake!
Whoa boy! There's no one better to put the wow back into wowza than San Franny's favorite ebony ecdysiast SIMONE DE LA GHETTO. She's the queen of the quake, the Salome of the shake. She knows how to squeeze sweat from a stone.
Those faint of heart or week-kneed be warned!

About your Producers:
Val Killmore is an independent filmmaker who grew up in Southern California. While in NYC she worked for one of the largest independent film companies in the world distributing first run, classic, and reissue movies to theaters and television worldwide. She serves as Associate Program Director for the Coney Island Film Festival. Currently residing in SF and NYC, Val is an Independent Film Producer; producing mainstream Hollywood-fare pictures. Lily Burana book signing and Sugar Shack in SF on Thursday, May 14, 2009

Lady Satan of Sugar Shack let me know that they're having a combination benefit show and book signing with Lily Burana (http://www.lilyburana.com/) next week at the Hypnodrome on 1oth Street.

Lily Burana is a writer who has published in various publications including The Washington Post, GQ, The New York Times, Self, Glamour, Entertainment Weekly, Details, and others. I remember reading some of her articles!

So she's a former "punk rock stripper," who has fallen in love with a man in uniform and found herself a military wife while her husband is in Iraq. So what does she do to entertain the other wives? Teach them burlesque!

That's the focus of the story of her latest book, I Love a Man in Uniform. She'll be at the Hypnodrome next week signing copies of her book, and there will be a show featuring some of the SF's burlesque stars.

And it's a free event!

Here are the details:

Please join Green Apple Books and Music, when we take a field trip to the fabulous Hypnodrome Theatre on Thursday, May 14th to celebrate the newest book from Strip City’s Lily Burana, entitled I Love a Man in Uniform. This enchanting memoir finds Lily falling head over heels for an enlisted man, and before you can say “Ten-Hut!” she’s hitched and living on West Point while her husband is deployed to Iraq. So how does an ex-erotic dancer stay busy on a military base these days? Well it’s quite simple really! She starts teaching the other wives the lost art of classic burlesque – gulp!

This free event will showcase Lily Burana in a theatrical setting, but she won’t be alone. Joining her for the evening will be San Francisco’s own burlesque superstars performing and offering suggestions for other budding dancers. Door prizes and a charity raffle (not to mention beer and wine) will round out what is certain to be a book-signing like none that you’ve ever been to before.

Slide by The Hypnodrome on Thursday May 14th when high and low cultures collide! There’s plenty of free parking, and it’s the perfect excuse to discover (or hopefully revisit) one of the coolest theatre spaces in the Bay Area. Plus, a signed copy of I Love a Man in Uniform would make the perfect gift for the one that you love.

Addition and corrections on May 6, 2009: In my haste to get the posting up, I spelled Lily Burana's name incorrectly. So that was corrected. I also omitted the picture of her book cover, so I added that. I added Sugar Shack's involvement, because many of the event descriptions online, including Lily Burana's blog, list Sugar Shack Burlesque as performing. I'll see if Lady Satan has a lineup, and I'll post it here if she sends it to me. Oh, and the L.A. Times blog, Jacket Copy, has an interesting interview posted online.

"A Wink and a Smile" premieres in San Francisco May 29 to June 2 at Red Vic Movie House

I've been reading about this documentary in burlesque mailing lists for a while now, and it's finally going to make it's premiere in San Francisco! It's A Wink and a Smile, and it will be shown at the Red Vic May 29 through June 2. In addition to the screenings, there will be some live performances by some of the performers from the film!

Playing May 29 - June 2, 2009

SF Theatrical Premiere!
A Wink And A Smile

Dir. Dierdre Timmons US 2008

A Wink and a Smile Movie Poster

An intoxicating mix of private thoughts and public behavior, A Wink and a Smile exposes more than the human body by spotlighting gender, power, sexuality and social identity. It follows the lives of ten “ordinary” women who do something extraordinary - learn the art of burlesque dancing and striptease. Through their adventures, we see how a homemaker, a reporter, a doctor, an opera singer, a taxidermist and a college student join the American cultural revival of burlesque, as it moves from fringe fascination to mainstream obsession, engaging a world where performance art and showgirl spectacle, music, theater and sensuality crash into over-the-top glamour. (91m)

Wink star Miss Indigo Blue joins some of the films' charming starlets, The Shanghai Pearl (The Tantalizing Temptress from Taipei), Vera Lu (The Bawdy Body) and Seattle's Fuschia FoXXX (The Hot Pink Bellydance Machine) after the 7 p.m. screening Friday, May 29.

Vienna La Rouge ("most classic performer" at the 2006 Exotic World Burlesque Pageant) joins Shanghai, Vera Lu and Fuschia FoXXX after the 7 p.m. screening on Saturday, May 30.

Kellita (Queen of Carnaval SF 2008 and "Best of the Bay" by the SFBG) kicks up the action with Shanghai, Vera Lu and Fuschia FoXXX after the 7 p.m. screening on Sunday, May 31

Director Dierdre Timmons will also be on hand!
