SF Bay Area burlesque for the week of September 29, 2008

Well, Tease-O-Rama week in the Bay Area is finally here! Whew. Glad I got the food poisoning out of the way this weekend! The schedule seems to be on the light side this week, but there's still some shows on tap to satisfy your thirst for burly-q even if you can't make it to SF!

Thursday, October 2: Tease-O-Rama Meet and Mingle at the Rickshaw Stop in San Francisco. Kingfish and Eddie (again!) host a social evening featuring performances by Trixy Vixen (UK), the Honeybuns (Chicago), Ms. Violetta Beretta (Hawaii), and some of your local favorites. Doors at 9pm, show probably at 10ish. $8, 21+ w/ID.

Friday, October 3: Tease-O-Rama at Bimbo's 365 Club in SF. Opening night of TOR features MC Kitten on the Keys, an all-star line up including Catherine D'Lish, Dirty Martini, and Michelle L'amour, and a special performance by Cirque du Soleil Zumanity performers. Doors at 7pm, show at 8. $40, or $100 (two night VIP pass), 21+ w/ID.

Also Friday: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco. I don't have the line up yet, but Dottie Lux is putting together a fine show, I'm sure. Show at 7:30pm. $5-10 sliding scale, 21+ w/ID.

Also, also Friday: First Friday Follies at the Stork Club in Oakland. Join Mistress of Ceremonies Madam Chartreuse as she welcomes Eeyore the Clown, Rubenesque Burlesque, Mugg Muggles, Ariyana La Fey, Ophelia Coeur de Noir, Tin Cup Serenade, and the Belles du Jour. Doors at 8pm, show at 9. Free, 21+ w/ID.

Saturday, October 4: Tease-O-Rama at Bimbo's 365 Club in SF. The second night of TOR features MC Kitten on the Keys and special co-host Peaches Christ plus, another all-star line up including Vivienne VaVaoom, Delirium Tremens, and Miss Indigo Blue, as well as many of our own Bay Area legends and stars such as Isis Starr, the Hot Pink Feathers, Bombshell Betty, Delilah, and too many more to mention! Doors at 7pm, show at 8. $40, or $100 (two night VIP pass), 21+ w/ID.

Also Saturday: Burlesque n' Brass at Cafe Van Kleef in Oakland. Join a cadre of HPF Parade Corps starlets and Blue Bone Express in the East Bay! Doors at 8:30pm, show at 9:30. $10, 21+ w/ID.

Sunday, October 5: Tease-O-Rama Movie Nite at Cerrito Speakeasy Theater. Join host Will the Thrill as Thrillville screens "The Silencers," starring Dean Martin, Stella Stevens, and Cyd Charisse. Also featuring live performances by Kellita, Delirium Tremens, and Miss Indigo Blue! Show at 5pm.

Wow! That was the longest I've ever spent on one of these "upcoming shows" things. Could be the remnants of the bad food...or this could be one of the greatest weeks in SF burlesque history!!

The Sugarplum Elves are looking for performers for a fundraiser

I came across this posting from the Sugarplum Elves. Seems they're looking for various kinds of performers for a party they're having at the Space Lounge in San Francisco. It's non-paying, but there are other benefits.

The Sugarplum Elves (myspace.com/sugarplumelves) will be hosting a Calendar Release / Fundraiser / Wrap Party @ Space Lounge in San Francisco OCTOBER 18th.

We are looking for the following performers:
  • Burlesque
  • Hoop
  • Poi
  • Sword swallowers
  • Contortionists
  • Belly dancers
  • Anything that can be done indoors without too much room
Since this is a fundraiser, we cannot pay (sorry, we're broke performers too). However, you can sell merch and mingle with our party people which will have at least our 12 awesome photographers, as well as models, musicians and other creative peeps.

Hmm...Who knew those little yellow marshmallow critters could be creative? ;-)

If you're interested in performing, please contact the Elves through their MySpace page.

This just in...Tingel Tangel is at the Mars Bar, on Wednesday, September 23

Wow! I guess I should have gone to the last Tingel Tangel! Seems they got the boot from the Bubble Lounge because of some kind of brouhaha. Were there punches thrown? Wild sex gymnastics on the bar?

Well, perhaps something wild and crazy will happen this month! Here are the deets for this month's show:

Tingel Tangel Club - San Francisco
Wednesday, August 27
9p - 2a
Mars Bar
798 Brannan St
San Francisco, CA 94103
(415) 621-6277
Admission is $10, 21+ w/ID
Drink Specials from 9 - 11p

After last month's brouhaha, Tingel Tangel Club is on the lam. We're taking up residence this month at Mars Bar as we welcome the legendary Lady Bunny, creator and host of Wigstock, who'll be our DJ for the evening. After giving Trannyshack a glorious Kiss Off last month, Heklina joins us to host the night which features performances by Uni and Her Ukele, Scotty the Blue Bunny, Alotta Boutté, and comic actress Gerri Lawlor (a co-creator of the Similish language used in The Sims!).

This month is a critical juncture for us as we work to continue the party as a monthly without the support of the Bubble Lounge. If you appreciate what Weimar New York and Tingel Tangel Club have brought to San Francisco, I ask you to come out and support us this month and to spread the word! I'm not going to publicly go into the details surrounding last month's ruckus at Bubble Lounge, but I am happy to talk to people individually if you are interested to know the context for what happened.

The New York Burlesque Festival is underway

Wow! The NYBF is in the middle of its run. Tonight, their Saturday Spectacular includes performances by Angie Pontani, the reigning Miss Exotic World, Jo Boobs, Miss Delirium Tremens, Dirty Marini, the World Famous *BOB*, and local favorites Delilah and the Flying Fox.

Last night, Scotty the Blue Bunny returned to his old stomping (hopping?) grounds to host the Premiere Party. Vivienne VaVoom and Miss Indigo Blue were amongst those performing.

I'm actually fascinated with the idea of burlesque festivals, especially now that I'm volunteering for Tease-O-Rama. Aside from TOR and the NYBF, there is the London Burlesque Festival, the Vancouver International Burlesque Festival, the Texas Burlesque Festival, the Toronto Burlesque Festival, the Burlesque Ball in Sydney, Brisbane, and Melbourne, the Helsinki Burlesque Festival, and of course the Burlesque Hall of Fame/Exotic World Weekend in Las Vegas. There may be others that don't pop up in Google search. In fact, there probably are a few.

I'm looking forward to seeing a lot of the performers that I've only read about or seen on YouTube. I suppose this is one of the great things about these festivals. It gives audiences the chance to see some of the best perform all in an evening or three. And for the performers, it's a way of maintaining relationships in a community that spans a continents, and even oceans.

All-in-all, these festivals seem very, very cool. I'm so looking forward to TOR!

Tease-O-Rama 2008 Press Release Follow-Up

Wow! There are a lot of burlesque stars who will be performing at Tease-O-Rama this year in San Francisco!

I'm helping to promote the show this year, so I think that's pretty much everything that can be included in a press release. If you see any errors or omissions, please let me know and I'll rectify them immediately. I will be distributing it through some online channels, in addition to sending it to the authors of major burlesque blogs and posting it on bulletin boards and other online forums.

Also, please feel free to copy and paste it on your own blog, or anywhere you think people will find the information useful. Also feel free to take the information and use it to write a story about the event. There's contact information in there, and I'm sure that Alan Parowski (spacecapades@hotmail.com), who is handling press and media information, can answer your questions or perhaps get some interviews with the stars for you!

I'll also see about posting some graphics that you can use on MySpace comments, your blog, bulleting boards, your website, etc.

I'm really quite excited about seeing some performers I've only read about or seen on YouTube. It'll be really fun!!

100th post!

Woo hoo! This is a landmark occasion for "all of us" here at the SFBR. This is the 100th post, and I'm kinda surprised it made it this far. *Much celebrating and drinking of champers and tassel tossing*

I started this calendar and blog because it was just too damn difficult to find out about all of the burlesque shows in the Bay Area, especially for the general public. In order to find out about all the shows, one would need to befriend a lot of different performers and shows on MySpace, visit all of the different websites of the shows (which may not be updated regularly), and scan through the various weekly calendars. For people simply looking for a fun night out, that's an awful lot of work!

I've received many thanks for putting the SFBR together. And it always surprises me how many of the performers use this calendar! I guess I'd always thought that there was some kind of performer ESP where they all had instant mental access to information about all the shows. Haha. Sometimes I wonder about myself! But it's always nice to be recognized at shows whenever I mention that I'm Max.

Thanks for reading this blog, and I do hope it continues to be informative and helpful. I've found the performers and producers to be wonderful people overall, and if I can do my part to help people find the shows at which they perform their magic, then it's worth all of the effort.

And, if you would like to include the calendar on your own blog or website or MySpace profile, please do so! Here is the code that you can copy and paste:

You may adjust the size of the calendar by altering the width and height attributes in the code so that it will fit into the space on your page.

Thanks again!

Burlesque and local artists

If one thinks about it burlesque and art go together like peanut butter and jelly, peanut butter and chocolate, peanut butter and...haha. OK. You get the picture.

Anyway, attractive women in various kinds of revealing costumes have been a staple in pop art for decades. From the nose art of airplanes in World War II, to the sides of orange crates, to the Louis K. Meisel Gallery in New York, pin-up girls have had an enduring role in our culture.

So, I was very pleasantly surprised to see that some of our own local burlesque performers are artists and are exhibiting their work around the area. For example, Katrin Auch, in the post above, is an artist. So are Jessica "Tink" Whiteside (www.jessicawhiteside.com) and Alice Stribling (www.alicestribling.com).

Tink and Alice are both co-curating a show that is scheduled for February 2009 at 111 Minna. It is titled "Pin It Up Babycakes!", and there is more information about the show at www.pinitupbabycakes.com. Wnen more details are available, I'll post them here. As a side note, is it just me or does that look like Tink with dark hair on the homepage of the exhibition website? Perhaps it's just me. Heh.

Tink also has some of her work exhibited at The Alternative Cafe (www.thealternativecafe.com) in Seaside near Monterey for the next week. It's a group show called "Garter Belts and Gasoline." There will be a closing party next Saturday evening for collectors. Please see the cafe's website for more detials. I really do love her work, and she's graciously given me permission to use one of her paintings as a masthead for this blog. I just need to develop a new template.

If any of you learn about a show featuring pin-ups and burlesque related art, please let me know and I'll post them here.

Performers needed for a breast cancer benefit show

I know that some of you readers out there are burlesque performers. So this post is for you!

My buddy sASSy HotBuns--who is a member of the Dangerous Curves troupe--sent out a call for performers for a benefit show that is being put together by Katrin Auch. If you are would like to volunteer, please contact Katrin at the email address listed below.

Fast Times 80 Dance Party (www.fasttimes80s.com) and Dangerous Curves
(www.dangerouscurvesgirls.com) are sponsoring a charity event to raise awareness and money for Breast Cancer research. On October 11th at the Uptown Club in Oakland, we will be presenting an evening of live 80's music and Burlesque performance: Knocktober Fest. We are looking for burlesque acts that are interested in performing with the live band to hits from the 80s. If you are interested in donating your time to perform a solo or group number, or be a part of the show in some other manner—Go Go Dancer or work in our Kissing Booth—please contact send an email to katrinauch@gmail.com. It should be a great time for a great cause, and we are planning to do a big publicity push. On their website is a list of the 80s songs that Fast Times performs, email soon to secure the song that you want.

HOT PINK FEATHERS SHOWGIRL ACADEMY FALL SESSIONS I, II, III:
AUDITION:

***AUDITION CLASS to join Hot Pink Feathers company through ODC AUDITION CLASS SERIES at ODC Commons, 351 Shotwell St. between 17th and 18th, on SUNDAY 9/21 11-1pm (see below for full details)

This audition will take place in a class format, including warm-up. The feeling will be welcoming and relaxed, not the typical "audition with a chill." Hot Pink Feathers seeks 5-6 female dancers to join our core company for on-going performances in a variety of venues. Rehearsals will likely be Mon noonish, Tues eve & other TBA time. Compensation includes performance pay (for many gigs), training, and great comraderie. Strong candidates are dancers who exude joy & delight, have gorgeous dance lines, an innate and acute sense of rhythm and musicality, have mastered both fluidity and sharpness of movement, articulate hips and chest well, and express through to the fingertips, toes and via face. Dancers with extensive and varied performance experience preferred. Be comfortable both in front of large audiences, and in small venues, where the 4th wall is very thin. Some new members will tour with us, so flexible schedules are a big plus!
Wow! There will be auditions for new core HPF members. If you've ever wanted to be a Feather, now's your chance!

If you're interested in any of the classes, please contact Kellita at the email address mentioned above. Please also visit www.hotpinkfeathers.com for more info.
