Sugar Shack comes to San Francisco!

It looks like Lady Satan is bringing New York's Sugar Shack Burlesque and Dance Party to the City by the Bay!

According to an interview with Legs Malone in the Valley Advocate, Sugar Shack was founded in New York by RunAround Sue and Lady Satan.

There's not much information it seems, other than that the first show will be August 9, 2008, at the Elbo Room. Oh, there will be girls! Dancing! Go-Go! And mooore! With Sergio Iglesias and MattB providing the tunes.

Looks fun! I'll put out more details as they become available.

Week of June 30, 2008: SF Bay Area burlesque shows

After a week full of Pride events, and with the July 4th holiday coming up, this week there's only two burlesque events that I know of:
  • Monday: Uptown Hubba Hubba at the Uptown in Oakland. Show starts at 10pm. $5 cover, 21+ w/ID.
  • Friday: Red Hots Burlesque at El Rio in San Francisco. Show at 7:30pm. $4-10 sliding scale, 21+ w/ID.
Please notice that the usual First Friday show at the Stork Club won't be happening because of the holiday. But the Belles du Jour will be back in August!

Seems like a quiet week, but I'll bet they're gonna be good shows!

Experiencing Q-baret Spectacular

As I was walking down Howard, looking for the Garage at 975, I only noticed what looked like a private residence at that address. There wasn't a sign or any other indication that the show was there. Thinking I remembered the address incorrectly and that it must be 875, I walked a bit down the street and checked my posting for the correct address. It was 975 Howard! So I went back, opened the door, figured I was in the right place since there was no angry residents yelling at me, and I entered.

My Q-baret experience was a little like finding the performance space. I didn't quite know what to expect. I've never seen SF Boylesque before, and I had only seen Twilight Vixen Revue once or twice as part of a show featuring lots of other acts. How were the two troupes going to fill an entire show? They dd so very well, it turns out.

In a small theatre, the two troupes, Nicolai the magician, and MC Truly Scrumptious put together a very entertaining show featuring many costume changes, well-choreographed acts, and creatively sexy performances. Though I'm not a burlesque performer or educator, I enjoyed the show very much, as did the audience. That's pretty much my gauge as to the quality of a show.

Hooray for Twilight Vixen Revue and SF Boylesque!

If you're going to the last show today, just be aware that there may not be a sign hanging over the door, so just push it open. Also, the show starts at 8pm, so you'll be out by about 9:40 if you have any other Pride events that you're planning to attend. All of the details are in the calendar above.

Next in this series, I'll be describing my experience at the last Hubba Hubba show in San Francisco. If I ever get it edited to my satisfaction. Hehe.

Amelia Mae Paradise and the Diamond Daggers will be having their Dyke March After Party at 111 Minna in SF. The doors are at 8pm, and the show begins at 9. There will be dancing afterwards. Cover is $12-20 on a sliding scale.

Red Hots Burlesque will be having their show as presented by Madame Maraschino at Benders in SF. Doors at 9pm, show will follow shortly. Probably 9:30 or 10. Cover is $8.

And, lastly, Saturday will be your last chance to catch the Q-baret Spectacular with Twilight Vixen Revue and SF Boylesque. It will be at the Garage in SF. 8pm. Tickets are $10-15 on a sliding scale.

On Sunday, the Diamond Daggers will be at two different events. Here are the details straight from the Daggers themselves:
NectArena Presents
NectArena Women's Pride Stage

Golden Gate Between Van Ness & Polk
Diamond Daggers at 1:15 for 20 minutes

We're gonna be shaking it up and stirring in some feathery fanciness for all the gay gals at Pride this year. We'll be joined by the amazingly talented Alotta Boutte (of Beach Blanket Babylon & Harlem Shake) for a 20 minute set of Diamond Dagger's Best. There will be solos, duets, drag, and group spectacle from the Bay Area's favorite Burly-Queer Cabaret!

Juanita MORE! Presents
Gay Pride 08 After Party!!
Sunday June 29, 2008
The Phoenix Hotel, Bambuddah Lounge, 601 Eddy Street, San Francisco
doors at 3, performance at 6
$25 in advance, $30 at the door

Once again Juanita MORE is hosting the hottest San Francisco LGBT Pride Parade - After Party. A portion of the proceeds from this event will benefit The New Leaf Outreach to Elders Program. The afternoon benefit includes dancing to the hottest beats by some of Miss MORE's favorite DJs - Chelsea Starr (Hot Pants, Booty Call), James Glass, Robot Hustle (Honey Sound System), and The Bearded Lady (Chili Dog) & Steve Summers. A spectacular performance by Harlem Shake Burlesque & Diamond Daggers that is not to be missed! San Francisco's ONLY pool party is only a couple of blocks away from Civic Center which this makes Bambuddha Lounge the perfect spot for you and your friends to celebrate. There will be a limited amount of tickets available this year.
More details, including maps, are located in the calendar above. Have a great weekend!

Bombshell Betty's blog: It's a Bombshell's World!

Somehow, after all this time, I've missed reading Bombshell Betty's blog "It's a Bombshell's World" (http://bombshellbetty.wordpress.com/). I've just started reading the first few postings, but it seems to be a great resource for those who are burlesque performers and those who are curious about the inner workings of and debates within burlesque.

Among other things, Betty covers such topics as writing one's performer bio, starting out in burlesque in a new town, and the issue of stripping versus burlesque. I may not be posting for a while, because I'll be reading Betty's archives. It's fascinating stuff!

If you get a chance, check it out.
